The group that gets most of the credit is the Israelitische Turnverein, a group of Jewish gymnasts who were expelled from the Berlin Turnverien. As early as the 19th century, Jewish sports clubs were founded in Eastern and Central Europe. The first club was the Israelite Gymnastic Association Constantinople (German: Israelitischer Turnverein Konstantinopel) founded in 1895 in Constantinople, Turkey by Jews of German and Austrian extraction who had been rejected from participating in other social sport clubs. Two years later, haGibor was formed in Philipople, Bulgaria and 1898 saw the founding of Bar Kochba Berlin along with Vivó és Athletikai Club in Budapest, Hungary. Other clubs that followed were named after “Bar Kochba” or Hebrew names such as “Hakoah” or “Hagibor” that symbolized strength and heroism. Yesterday I found a book that says my great great grandfather, Carl Janke was a Forty-niner who built homes all over the Bay Area. On November 29, 1858, M.C. Blake, County Judge of San Francisco County, appointed Major Isaac Rowell to enroll members in a volunteer military company to be known as the California Fusileers. The name fusileer (or fusilier) originally applied to a soldier armed with a fusil. In the British Army the designation Fusiliers is still retained by ten regiments distinguished from the other regiments of the line only by wearing a kind of busby and other peculiarities in costume.
Accordingly on December 9, 1858, Major Rowell presided at the meeting and superintended the election of officers of this new organization. F. G. E. Tittel was elected Captain and Peter Lesser, First Lieutenant. The company was composed almost entirely of German citizens of San Francisco and was a well drilled unit.
Their first recorded appearance in public was in connection with the elaborate military reception tendered to General Winfield Scott on October 18, 1859. Governor Weller and other dignitaries attended the reception and tendered their respect to the famous hero of the Mexican Campaign. (1)
The path of the California Fusileers proved to be rough and rather stormy for in the latter part of 1863, a bitter feud between Captain Tittel and Colonel West, commanding the First Regiment of Infantry, culminated in the refusal of Colonel West to deliver uniforms to Company E, California Fusileers as long as Captain Tittel was in command. When Captain Tittel was promoted to Colonel of the Sixth Infantry Regiment, First Lieutenant John Obeneimer made a new demand to Colonel West for their uniforms.
The Colonel again refused to deliver the uniforms until the company should show that their bona fide active members were sufficient to comply with the law, and that the officers evinced a disposition to do their duty and obey proper orders and regulations. In reply to this letter, the Lieutenant urged the Colonel to prefer charges against him if he had been negligent in duty or disobeyed orders. The Lieutenant was a “fighter” evidently, for he not only contradicted the Colonel but he took the matter up with Brigadier-General Ellis, who then ordered.an inspection of the company by Major Hill on December 10, 1863. The inspection showed their arms and equipirient in good and serviceable order, their books well kept but in German language, the discipline of the company good and their drill passable. Thirty-seven members were in old and badly worn uniforms, and seven without any uniforms. These uniforms belonged to the old company and were private property.
The records do not reveal the outcome of the strife, but it is assumed that the unit received their uniforms for soon after the passing of the Inspection, the California Fusileers were transferred to the Sixth Infantry Regiment, Second Brigade as Company A. The Colonel of this Regiment was the California Fusileers’ first Captain (F. C. E. Tittel) and no doubt the new assignment ended the ill-feeling between Colonel West and the California Fusileers.
With the conclusion of the Civil War the need for a large militia force was lessened and the Legislature passed a law reducing the number of the militia. This law provided for the organization of a Board of Organization and Location. The duty of this Board was to select companies that were to be mustered out, their selection being decided according to local requirements, ability.to concentrate on short notice, and the ability to meet the standards required regarding efficiency and enrollment of individual companies. It is assumed the California Fusileers was mustered out because of their location in relation to military need, since a large number of companies were mustered out in San Francisco for that reason. Their mustering out occurred on July 23, 1866.

It was a unique parade, that which passes through San Francisco’s peaceful streets Sunday forenoon. Not since our own “Californias” has so splendid a body of men been in our midst. And picked men they certainly are, picked from all the States, these men of the shooting clubs, these sharpshooters, these Schützenbrüder.
Men from the cities and men from the fields and forests; riflemen and sharpshooters from the Eastern centers, and hunters and fighters from the plains and mountains of the West. From Montana, Idaho, Arizona and Colorado, from Chicago, New York and Boston, and even from Europe they have come to take part in the Third National Bundes Shooting Festival. They are skillful men, eagle-eyed and steady of nerve, who have won trophies everywhere—gun experts and crowned kings of the target, to say nothing of princes and knights galore, who have demonstrated their fitness in rifle ranges the world over, and who have come together here, by the shores of the Pacific, in friendly contest.
Promptly at the target The Examiner’s siren the parade swung into motion from the corner of Market and New Montgomery streets; and right here, in passing, it is meet to state that promptness pre-eminently characterizes these riflemen. No delays; no lagging. They achieve the impossible feat of doing everything on schedule time.
Grand Marshal Robert Weineke led the long column of many divisions, and with the assistance of innumerable aides on gaily caparisoned horses, went over the line of march in splendid order. The route was up Market to City Hall Avenue, around the Lick monument, countermarch on Market to Kearny, to California, to Montgomery and down Market to the Oakland ferry.
The banners were many and beautiful, but it was the uniforms that especially caught the eye. Gray and green predominated. And it is indeed a pretty sight, a body of stalwart men clad in the traditional hunting green, with black drooping plumes of ostrich in their dark slouch hats. But with the recent developments of the machinery of warfare in one’s mind, one would not forbear looking a second time at the unobtrusive, inconspicuous grays. They would surely conceal more easily a sharpshooter’s movements at a time when discovery would mean to invite a whirlwind of death-dealing missiles. And the grays were pretty, too—in fact, all the uniforms were neat and tasty.
From the ferry a special boat, and from the Oakland mole a special train, carried the sharpshooters to Shell Mound Park. And there, at 12 noon, to the stroke, Captain F. A. Kuhls, President of the Shooting Bund, made the opening address. This part of the programme took place in the big pavilion, with the furled standards swaying beneath golden eagles of victory and the marksmen leaning picturesquely on their rifles.

Then the great crowd scattered and spread over the grounds in quest of restaurants or quiet places where hampers and lunch baskets might be opened, and also in quest of that national beverage that made Milwaukee famous.
At 1 o’clock sharp President F. A. Kuhls opened the great shooting contest by firing three shots into the air. The first was “for our adopted country,” the second “for the old Fatherland,” and the third “for the commonweal of the National Shooting Bund.”
At once followed a wild scramble for the honor of making the first bull’s-eye, and the hasty firing only eased down when loud cheers proclaimed the lucky individual.
Then what seemed like an indiscriminate fusillade set in. There were so many targets and so many shooting boxes that the whole thing seemed confused and disorderly. That there was any sanity about it, an adjacent lady could not be convinced. “How does anybody know anything?” she demanded excitedly, her voice pitched high in order to get above the roar of the guns. “Who is shooting? What are they scoring? Who is judging? Who is keeping track? And where are the targets?”
Nay, she could not see them. There were no targets. Preposterous! But a young fellow in the uniform of the United States artillery calmed her apprehensions after a quarter of an hour of endeavor, whereupon she undertook the hopeless task of re-explaining everything to her grandfather.
And well might she be forgiven her minutes of anxiety lest the whole shooting contest had gone to smash. At first glance it was indeed hard to locate the targets amid the maze of timbers and uprights that studded the range. Besides, two hundred yards is not to [be] sneezed at, and a black bull’s-eye at that distance does not appear over large.
What really gave the impression of disorder, however, was the smoothness with which the machinery was running. The whole trouble was subjective. There was no evidence of the mind of some man behind and directing it all; no creaking of the wheels, as it were; but gradually, as one grew accustomed, order began to appear out of chaos. Each man was firing in turn. The shooting secretaries were at their posts; and down at the far end of the range the targets were constantly being replaced, and the long-handled spotters and vari-colored flags of the markers were indicating the scores as fast as they were made.
And in this manner did the ten days’ contest commence; and not only is it the greatest shooting festival California has ever had, but it is the greatest ever held in the United States. It might well put the tournaments of the Middle Ages to scorn; for in those same Middle Ages it is to be doubted if knights ever jousted for as princely prizes or for honors more highly esteemed and verily, in those days it was a rare knight who fared three thousand miles or more to a tilting match.
The glittering array of prizes in the Temple of Gifts cost not a cent less than $100,000, while the honor that accompanies them is something that cannot be measured by worldly and commercial standards. Yes; the standards are quite different from those of old time. Here at the Bundesfest they will crown a man king. He will be a common-man king, crowned not because of what his father or grandfather chanced to do, but crowned because of the things he himself has done; and to be king of American riflemen; to possess the steadiest nerve, the keenest eye, the finest and subtlest judgment, and to be so adjudged by one’s own fellows —surely this is finer and bigger than to sit vacuously in a high place because, forsooth, some greater and stronger robber-ancestor ground a people under the iron heel.
And while the sires and sons and husbands and brothers line up at the firing butts their womenkind and children are not a whit behind in enjoying themselves. All over the big grounds is frolicking and merrymaking of young and old; children in the swings and on the hobby-horses; lusty young fellows doing the giant swing on the bars or striking with the heavy mallet till they ring the bell three clips out of four; and then, since there are many men to shoot and only so many targets, there is dancing going on at both pavilions, and it must be confessed the floors are crowded with whirling couples. Everywhere is the clink of glasses to genial laughter, while over all, ringing and reverberating throughout the place, are the rifles. And for ten days without intermission, with balls, receptions and concerts in the evenings, this will continue. This is the Schützenfest.

On April 14, 2021 I posted on Jack London’s connection to Ian Fleming and James Bond. With the release of ‘No Time To Die’ that post has proved very prophetic. It was my goal to ground Ian Fleming and my Bond book in Belmont California co-founded by my great grandfather, Carl Janke. I was met with opposition that will be in my book ‘The London Eulogy’.

Jack London helped found the City of Carmel with the help of George Serling who was a founder of the Bohemian Club. My sister Rosamond had two galleries in Carmel. I bring my grandfather genetic DNA to Belmont where I found this day ‘The Belmont Bohemians’. I bring Ludwig Wittgenstein to Belmont. Like London and Martin, he was a philosopher. Edgar Albee said you got to fight for your bench. I own Belmont in a Literary Way.

I could not believe Rosemary had given me her father’s ship lanterns that once hung in the cabin of his sail boat. It was the last tour we would take together of the secret treasures that lie at the bottom of her cedar chest. My mother let me thumb through several issues of Out West magazine while telling me her father was a writer and a poet, but, she never let me read the work of a man I never met, never saw face to face. When my best friend, Bill Arnold, told me Rosemary had shown him the evidence Royal Rosamond was a writer, I was puzzled, and jealous. What gives?

The Home Guard Willing to Shed Its Blood but Only at Los Angeles The contemplated home guard of sharpshooters connected with the Turnverein Germania Is making but slow progress In getting organized. A minority of intending members met last night but failed to do anything. A score or so were willing to sign the roll to be forwarded to the adjutant general, but several others held back, not from lack of patriotism or want of sympathy with the United States, but for fear that In the event of the state’s accepting their services as an Independent company they might be called upon to do duty or fight away from home. These men hay* ties here which preclude their leaving their families or interests and they are unwilling to sign any papers which might turn out to be no obligation to leave Los Angeles and march to the front. They want to be strictly what the name Implies—home guard. As one man put it tersely, “I am for this country, willing to defend It here and shed my blood right in Los Angeles for the Stars and Stripes, but I’ll be goll-darned if I want to have it run out of my body at Milpitas or Sausalito.” At the next meeting, however, it is expected that so many will sign the roll that the sharpshooters will be able to organize.

Yesterday I discovered one of my great grandfathers founded a Turnverein Hall on Bush Street in San Francisco. This hall was a place one could go hear music and practice gymnastics. The Seamens Friendly Union met here, and the Vigilance Committee. Plays were performed, and debates held. This is the radical root of San Francisco that I have traced to the Longshoreman’s Hall and the first Acid Tests. The Turner hall offered music and other entertainment as an alternative to gambling and prostitution. My father was a Merchant Marine and would be pleased to know the first institution for furthering sailor rights met in the Bush hall.

Garter stall plates are small enamelled brass plates located in St George’s Chapel displaying the names and arms of the Knights of the Garter. Each knight is allotted a stall in St George’s Chapel and the stall plate is affixed to his personal stall. His successor knight in that stall adds his own stall plate and thus a fairly complete series of stall plates survives for the successive occupants of each stall. Many other ancient European Orders of Chivalry use similar stall plates in the home church or other building of their order.

The Woman’s Movement is based on two entirely false premises. The first is that “Women have been oppressed and sexually exploited by Men”. This is just the opposite of what is really true. Yesterday I found a book that says my great great grandfather, Carl Janke was a Forty-niner who built homes all over the Bay Area. It was radical socialist Jews, who belonged to sports clubs, that founded the state of Israel, and not Rabbis or a Messiah. The only person giving the title ‘Messiah’ was Harry Truman, a Democrat. The group that gets most of the credit is the Israelitische Turnverein, a group of Jewish gymnasts who were expelled from the Berlin Turnverien. My Stuttmeiser, Janke kinfolk were members of the Tunrverein, and were radical Forty-Eighters who are also give credit for the founding of Israel. These Forty-Eighters made up John Fremont’s and Jessie Benton’s bodyguard. The Freemasons are here. Other clubs that followed were named after “Bar Kochba” who was seen as a Messiah until he failed to drive the Romans out of Judea. His name was changed to “Simon bar Kozeba” (Hebrew: בר כוזיבא, “Son of lies” or “Son of deception”).
Whne you add it all up, for some strange reason my kindred are right there at the center of the Zionist controversy that has overcome the Republican Party, all but destroying it. As early as the 19th century, Jewish sports clubs were founded in Eastern and Central Europe. The first club was the Israelite Gymnastic Association Constantinople (German: Israelitischer Turnverein Konstantinopel) founded in 1895 in Constantinople, Turkey by Jews of German and Austrian extraction who had been rejected from participating in other social sport clubs. Two years later, haGibor was formed in Philipople, Bulgaria and 1898 saw the founding of Bar Kochba Berlin along with Vivó és Athletikai Club in Budapest, Hungary. Other clubs that followed were named after “Bar Kochba” or Hebrew names such as “Hakoah” or “Hagibor” that symbolized strength and heroism. One of the basic premises behind the founding of these clubs was Jewish Nationalism. The concept was that Jews were not only a religious entity, but also one based on a common historical and social background, having special cultural and psychological concepts that have been preserved to this day, resulting in a strong recognition of collective belonging. In 1906, the first Jewish gymnastics club was formed in Palestine. Clubs later would spring up in other cities. By 1912, all of them joined the Maccabi Federation of Israel. That same year, the first relations were established between them and their European counterparts, when a decision was taken at the Maccabi Conference in Berlin to begin group trips to Palestine.
Simon bar Kokhba (Aramaic: שמעון בר כוכבא, also transliterated as Bar Kochba) was the Jewish leader of what is known as the Bar Kokhba revolt against the Roman Empire in 132 CE, establishing an independent Jewish state of Israel which he ruled for three years as Nasi (“Ruler”). His state was conquered by the Romans in 135 following a two-year war. Documents discovered in the modern era[1] give us his original name, Simon ben Kosiba, (Hebrew: שמעון בן כוסבא) he was given the surname Bar Kokhba, (Aramaic for “Son of a Star”, referring to the Star Prophecy of Numbers 24:17, “A star has shot off Jacob”) by his contemporary, the Jewish sage Rabbi Akiva. After the failure of the revolt, the rabbinical writers referred to bar Kokhba as “Simon bar Kozeba” (Hebrew: בר כוזיבא, “Son of lies” or “Son of deception”).
Despite the devastation wrought by the Romans during the First Jewish-Roman War (66–73 CE), which left the population and countryside in ruins, a series of laws passed by Roman Emperors provided the incentive for the second rebellion. The last straw was a series of laws enacted by the Roman Emperor Hadrian, including an attempt to prevent Jews from living in Jerusalem; a new Roman city, Aelia Capitolina, was to be built in its place. The second Jewish rebellion took place 60 years after the first and re-established an independent state lasting three years. For many Jews of the time, this turn of events was heralded as the long hoped for Messianic Age. The excitement was short-lived, however; after a brief span of glory, the revolt was eventually crushed by the Roman legions.
A complete Roman legion with auxiliaries was annihilated. The new state knew only one year of peace. The Romans committed no fewer than twelve legions, amounting to one third to one half of the entire Roman army, to reconquer this now independent state. Being outnumbered and taking heavy casualties, the Romans refused to engage in an open battle and instead adopted a scorched earth policy which reduced and demoralized the Judean populace, slowly grinding away at the will of the Judeans to sustain the war.
The first all Jewish gymnastic club was formed in 1895 known as the Israelitische Turnverein Konstantinopel (Israelite Gymnastic Association Constantinople), it was formed by German and Austrian Jews residing in Constantinople (Istanbul – Kushta) who were unwelcome at the German gymnastic societies with their “Aryan – only” membership proclivities.
Modeling themselves on the very German organization which had barred them, they adopted the slogan of the vigorous, devout, cheerful and free.
Another milestone in the formation of the Jewish sport movement occurred at a meeting of the permanent committee of the Second Zionist Congress held in Basel in 1898. Dr. Max Nordau made an impassioned plea for a Muscular Judaism noting that “We Jews possess an exceptional gift for physical activity. It may by that this will appear paradoxical since we have been accustomed for generations to view ourselves in the mirror which our enemies have held up to so, and to discover any number of physical blemishes. It is true that our muscles have been weakened and that our attitudes and postures are not always satisfactory… but when Jews do engage in sport their defects vanish, their postures improve, their muscles become strong and their general health gets better”. Similarly, Herzl stressed that the derisive term coined by the anti-Semites, Judenjungen (akin to “Jewboy”), should be reversed in both form and content, and give way to the meritorious appellation Junge Juden (Young Jew).
Following Herzl’s and Nordau’s call, many clubs were quickly organized. This nascent movement received an immeasurable boost with the appearance in 1900 of the first periodical dedicated entirely to Jewish sport, Die Juedische Turanzeitung, which was the official publication of the pre-eminent Jewish gymnastic club, Juedische Turnverein Bar Kochba – Berlin.
Bolstered by the newspaper’s daring proclamation, the by now numerous Jewish gymnastic clubs banded together in 1903 under the umbrella organization of Die Juedische Turnerschaft (Jewish Gymnastic Association) with headquarters in Berlin. The constitution of Die Juedische Turnerschaft permitted membership to every Jewish gymnastic club that accepted that “the aim of the society is to foster gymnastics as a medium to build up physical fitness as part of the Jewish National Idea.”
On the fourth of May [1856] the regular annual festival of the Turnverein Association of San Francisco took place, with all the usual accompaniments of music, dancing, gymnastics, oratory, eating and drinking. The festival, which was inaugurated by a procession of the Society to welcome their brother Turners from the interior, lasted three days, and everybody passed off in the most orderly and agreeable manner. The gymnastic performances were excellent, and formed a large portion of the ceremonies.
The celebration of the “May festival,” although in the United States it is conducted under the control of the Turnverein Association, is a national festival in which all the Germans partake, and which is celebrated throughout all Germany. The origin of the Turner Association, which has now become so large and so important a one among our German citizens, was a political one. Germany is divided into thirty-six different States, with as many Governments of a despotic nature, and many of them hostile to each other.
Young Germany, deeply imbued with the spirit of freedom, has been for a long time anxious to throw off these yokes, and unite under one liberal, consolidated Government; but the rulers, in order to prevent this, have forbidden all assemblies or associations for political purposes, under heavy penalties. In order to avoid this prohibition an enthusiastic republican named Jahn made the meeting and associations for gymnastic exercises the occasion for the spread of democratic doctrines, and the Turnverein (or gymnastic association,) soon spread and grew into importance wherever Germans are found. This association now exists in, and exercises a great influence over the whole German population.
There is no secrecy about the association, neither is there any direct connection between the different associations, although a Turner of any one city considers himself, to all intents and purposes, a member of the Turnverein of any other city.

I do not know if my older brother, Mark Presco, is alive or dead. He did not call me up and tell me Vicki Presco was dying, and was dead. Mark knew nothing about our family history, yet, if he contacted the Belmont Historical Society – they would have thrown open the Gold Gates to Belmont, and welcomed home their Parodical Son. I am positive I was EXAMINED – screened by the BHS to see if I had the right stuff, was, like them in many ways – and my politics matched! To their horror, they say I was their collective opposite. They delayed posting my history – while they figured out what to do. This constitutes a conspiracy to deprive of my Civil Liberties. Royal Rosamond Press is a registered newspaper in Lane County. They knew this.
With the death of Lawrence Ferlinghetti, I fall back to my kin, Jessie Benton-Fremont, as the co-founder of Bohemianism in the Bay Area. Eight years ago I read an article about Evangelicals buying the book ‘Fountainhead – by the ton! This book is placed near their Bible. Why? Prosperity Gospel is bringing them in the Big Tent. If you follow King Jesus – he will make you very rich. Mark is a millionaire who told me he does not pay taxes because he does not want “N….Parasites” to get his money. If he is dead, he has found a way to leave his money to our kin – without any of his enemies knowing. Evanelicals believed that Trump was going to cut their taxes. An FBI report says the majority of Insurrectionists were about forty, and were businessmen – and not neo-Nazis.

Mark Presco conspired with Vicki Presco, Stacey Pierrot, and Jacci Belford, to steal the creative legacy that Christine Rosamond Benton left her two daughters, Shannon Rosamond, and, Drew Benton. Drew is related to the artist Thomas Hart Benton, who is compared to Jack London. His grandfather was Senator Thomas Hart Benton, whose daughter, Jessie, married John Fremont, a co-founder of the Republican Party, and its first candidate for President of the United States. John also co-founded the Radical Democracy Party, and was its candidate for President, but he dropped out to keep the racist Democrats out of the White House. John was backed by radical Germans, Forty-Eighters, who complained about Lincoln’s tardiness in backing the Thirteenth, and Fourteenth Amendment.
THE MACCABI CLUB IN RUSCHUK AND CONSTANTINOPLE.
My grandfather, Moritz Abraham, and his brother, Haim Abraham, took an active part in the leadership of the Maccabi sports organization, first in Ruschuk, Bulgaria, then in Constantinople. In addition, Moritz’s future brother-in-law Israel Auerbach, who had previously taken part in the creation of Berlin’s Bar Kochba Jewish Sports Association, also belonged to the Constantinople Maccabi. Haim in particular seems to have taken a very active part in the sports association.
This page does not attempt to tell the story of Maccabi in Ruschuk (Ruse) or in Constantinople, as this would by far exceed the scope of this family project. My goal instead has been to collect information I’ve been able to find about the involvement of my grandfather Moritz Abraham and his brother Haim Abraham with Maccabi, as I believe this adds valuable insights about their lives. I am also including the work Israel and Elias Auerbach contributed to Maccabi in Constantinople and Haifa, as both families were closely related.
Ruschuk, Bulgaria
The participation of Haim (or “Heinrich” as he called himself then) with the early days of Maccabi in Ruschuk is documented in various articles and in two books, “Maccabi in the Balkan States” by David Rimon (1945) and “Maccabi Bulgaria” (1973).
In “Maccabi Bulgaria”, p44, Meir Melamed writes:
“On February 10th 1902 a group of youngsters founded the Maccabi Association in Ruse under the name “Jewish Association for Gymnastics and Music – Maccabi”. In 1905, after a fierce internal struggle, the Association defined itself as a Zionist organization.”
“Thanks to the active help of the Jewish community, which wholeheartedly supported the first organisation of its youths, thanks to the effective support of the World Zionist Organisation, to the enthusiasm of the youths’ management and to the talent of its leader, Heinrich Abraham*, Maccabi expanded its ranks from 42 to 100 members within a year. During this year, the Association held ten performances, designed its members’ uniforms and inaugurated its flag.”
*Note: Haim called himself “Heinrich” in Ruschuk after his return from Germany.
In December 1903, several Maccabi clubs from Bulgaria met in Sofia for their first national conference and Haim attended as the representant for the Ruschuk club.
Meir Melamed (“Maccabi Bulgaria”, p44):
[…] “In 1903, at the initiative of the Maccabi Association of Ruse, the first conference of the gymnastics associations in Bulgaria was organized in the city. […] Ruse became a center of guidance and influence for all the young Maccabi associations which began to emerge in Bulgaria one after another.”
David Rimon (HaMaccabi Be’Artzot HaBalkan):
“On December 25, 1903, the first national conference was held in Sofia, attended by Maccabi groups from Ruse, Plovdiv, Pazardzhik and Sofia. The Zionist Organization in Bulgaria sent a special representative to this conference to congratulate the Maccabi convention and to participate in it on its behalf.”
“The conference was limited to preparing the ground for the founding of the association, and elected a central committee whose task was to determine the regulations of the national association, its name, etc. The following were elected to the committee: Leon Cohen (President), Yaakov Tager, Emanuel Nasimoff, Alexander Radbil (today the four of them are in Tel Aviv) and Rahamim Baruch. The management of the technical work was handed over to the branch in Ruse under the presidency of Haim Avraham (today in Haifa).”

The participation of my grandfather is more sparsely documented, suggesting his involvement was much more limited. David Rimon briefly mentions his name, without detailing his role, aside from being a member of the association.

This commemorative card, celebrating the 10th anniversary of the “Israelitischer Turnverein Konstantinopel” was part of my grandfather’s collection. It’s not clear what was Moritz’s connection with this event since he left no written documentation. He may have participated to the anniversary in Constantinople as part of his acitivity in the Ruschuk Maccabi club.
The Maccabi Sports Organization of Constantinople had evolved from the “Israelitischer Turnverein Konstantinopel” (“Israelite Gymnastic Association of Constantinople”). It was the first Jewish sports organization in Eastern and Central Europe and was founded in 1895 in Constantinople by Jews of German and Austrian extraction who had been rejected from participating in other social sport clubs.
Upon their arrival in Constantinople in the Summer of 1908, Moritz and Haim joined the leadership of the Constantinople Maccabi organization.
In “HaMaccabi Be’Artzot HaBalkan” (The Maccabi in Balkan States), p96, David Rimon wrote:
“A few weeks after the Young Turk Revolution [July 1908], the brothers Haim Abraham and Moritz Abraham, members of Maccabi Ruschuk in Bulgaria, came to Constantinople. The brothers immediately went to work and devoted much of their time and energy to the development of the association.”
“At the same time, Dr Israel Auerbach, the representative in Turkey of the German Jewish “Ezra” society [“Hilfsverein der Deutschen Juden”] and a reporter of the official Zionist weekly “Die Welt” also arrived in Constantinople. Dr Auerbach, who prior to his arrival in Constantinople had been the president of “Bar Kochba” in Berlin (Jüdischer Turnverein Bar Kochba Berlin – the first Jewish gymnastics club) and the president of the Association of Jewish Gymnastics Societies in Germany, as well as the editor of the journal “Jüdische Turnzeitung”, joined the management of the Maccabi association in Constantinople and contributed his talent and extensive experience in both the organisational and technical fields”.
[…] “Under the influence of a few Zionists who were in Constantinople at that time, the Jews launched an internal propaganda for nationalism and Zionism. Among these Zionist influencers were Dr. David Marcus, rabbi of the Ashkenazi community, and Dr. Victor Jacobson, a representative of the Zionist General Council in Constantinople and director of the Anglo-Levantine Bank. […] A few months after the [July 1908 Young Turk] Revolution, Ze’ev Jabotinsky came to Constantinople. The influence of these Zionist leaders led by Jabotinsky, as well as the two Maccabis who came from Bulgaria [Haim (“Heinrich”) and Moritz Abraham], caused a complete change in the character of the “Israeli Gymnastics Association”, which in September 1908 already enacted a “national” [read “Zionist”] constitution.”
[…] The same month, the Israelite Gymnastics Association held a gymnastics celebration in honor of Dr. Israel Auerbach, and in the same year (1908) a large gymnastics celebration was held in which Jamal Pasha, son-in-law of Sheikh al-Islam and the Minister of State, participated.
David Rimon, p100:
“Most of the members in the suburbs [of Constantinople] were Sephardim, while in the city center one bloc of the two communities was formed, which led to the creation of a joint Maccabi committee of the Sephardim and Ashkenazim, consisting of HH: Moritz Abramovich – chairman, Dr. Israel Auerbach, Haim Avraham and more.”

Sitting on pommel horse in the center is Moritz Abramovitz, Chairman of the association.
This photo is on a postcard addressed to “Herr Abraham, Isr. Turnverein, Constantinople” and was mailed on July 24, 1908 from Munich. This would indicate that Moritz may have been in Constantinople, and had already joined the sports club before the Young Turk Revolution, which had started in July and ended on July 24, when Sultan Abdul Hamid II capitulated and reinstated the country’s constitution.
Roman Sinkovsky (“Jewish German gymnastic system in Turkey until 1918”):
In 1908 the Israelitischer Turnverein changed its name to the national-Jewish “Maccabi”. This renaming act followed naturally after the general assembly on May 25th 1908 when the club announced, for the very first time publicly, its national-Jewish conviction. This proposal originated by H. Abraham who declared that he was willing to hold his position (vice chairman) only in a national-Jewish turnverein.
According to the recollections of Sarah Cohen Eldar, Haim also “invented” Hebrew terms for gymnastics’ commands.
Sinkovsky:
Starting in May 1910 the gymnastic units were given in Hebrew and the club started organizing obligatory lessons of Hebrew for the members. The goal was the support of the national-Jewish idea and the prevention of the lingual and gymnastic-technical misunderstandings. The Constantinople Maccabi was the first national-Jewish club to use Hebrew.
Several Hebrew speaking men of Constantinople participated in creating the gymnastic terminology which was then sent to Jaffa (Palestine) for an appraisal.
The Jewish turners celebrated the commemoration of the Maccabbees with an annual gymnastic festival. On December 31st 1910, the program was started with the Ottoman anthem followed by the Zionist anthem (“Hatikvah”). Many Turkish officials and authorities were present, and some even gave speeches in one of the three official languages of the Maccabi – Turkish, Hebrew and French.

Maccabi organized many excursions, trips, sports celebrations and cultural events.
In the Spring of 1910, the Maccabi association travelled by ship to Kuzguncuk, a neighborhood of Constantinople on the Asian side of the Bosphorus and gave a presentation of gymnastics in front of a crowd. Also present were high-ranking army officers. At the end of their exhibition, they marched and sang the “Hatikva”.
David Rimon, p100-101:
“H. Chaim Avraham, one of the leaders of the Maccabi in Constantinople and its living spirit, took the stage and explained to the crowded audience the goals of the Maccabi and the benefits of physical education, and at the end of his remarks he congratulated the new branch of Maccabi that was founded in this suburb on the same day.”
“His speech made a great impression on those gathered who enthusiastically cheered […]”
On July 17-19, 1910, the 4th Maccabi Congress took place in Varna, Bulgaria. The Constantinople club sent thirty or so members to participate, led by Haim Abraham and three other representatives. L’Aurore, a Jewish weekly from Constantinople, reported that:
“[…] it was pure elation when Mr. Haim Abraham spoke on behalf of our maccabists – first in Hebrew and then in Spanish [Ladino – DA]. He knew how to express such feelings that the applause erupted at the end of every one of his sentences.”
In September 1910, El Tiempo, the Ladino publication opposed to Zionism, wrote an article attacking the Maccabi organization because of its Zionist leanings, focusing in particular on a speach given by Haim Abraham. In response, the Maccabi organization initiated a lawsuit against that publication, as reported by L’Aurore.
In September 1913, Haim attended the 11th Zionist Congress in Vienna, during which 1,450 gymnasts participated in a mass display of Jewish Gymnasts.

Sir Winston Churchill’s Garter stall plates
2015 marks the 50th anniversary of the death of Sir Winston Churchill KG. As customary on the death of a Knight of the Garter, Churchill’s Garter achievements (banner crest, helm and sword) were removed from his Garter stall in St George’s Chapel on the announcement of his death and a wreath was placed in his stall, as shown in this photograph taken in 1965 [SGC PH CER.34]. The wreath remained in the stall until the presentation of Churchill’s banner to his family at Evensong on 5 April 1965. Churchill’s Garter stall plate remains on the stall as a permanent memorial of his membership of the Order of the Garter. However, it was not the only stall plate made for Churchill’s stall – the other one is now believed to be in private hands. How did this come about?
Sir Winston Churchill was nominated as a Knight of the Garter on 24 April 1953 and invested and installed over a year later, on 14 June 1954. However, the production and fixing of his stall plate were delayed by a long running dispute between the stall plate maker, Harold Soper, and the College of Arms. Soper produced a partially completed stall plate for Churchill’s installation ceremony in 1954, but removed it immediately after the ceremony ‘in its unfinished state’, replacing it with a cardboard dummy plate of Churchill’s quarterly arms and two crests. By 5 October 1954, Soper informed the Garter King of Arms, Sir George Bellew, that the stall plate was finished but refused to produce it or to submit an invoice. On 29 November, Bellew wrote to Soper: ‘Can you let me have the Churchill Plate? If you do not wish me to have it and refuse to send it you can scarcely blame me for having another one made elsewhere, but that seems to me a foolish waste’.
In 1957, at the end of his tether, Bellew attempted to find an alternative manufacturer of stall plates, not just for Churchill but also for the other Companions of the Garter who lacked plates. On 1 July 1957, he wrote to Canon Venables at Windsor, ‘After nearly six years of trying to bury the hatchet with the Sopers I have at last had to give it up … Do not worry I am having all the plates made elsewhere (the first of which is Attlee, put up a few weeks ago). Churchill should be next.’
The manufacturer chosen was engraver George T. Friend. However, Friend lacked the skills and experience of Harold Soper in working with enamel and therefore came up with an inferior product. When Friend sent Churchill’s plate to the College of Arms for approval, the Garter King of Arms commented that he was disappointed that the red used on the plate was not brighter and noted that some of the enamel in the engraved surround had already fallen out. Friend was apologetic, explaining in a letter written on 29 May 1957 that ‘the engraved lines will not hold enamel, it is a lottery chance, and each time it was fired the other colours suffered.’ Friend concluded, ‘I cannot do Churchill in time [presumably for the Garter service on 17 June 1957], all will have to come out, it means doing it again. I would rather be in disgrace for delay than bad work’. He eventually completed the plate and sent it to Garter on 14 January 1958 and in due course it was fixed to Churchill’s stall in St George’s Chapel. Friend went on to manufacture other stall plates for St George’s until his death in 1969 Field’s stall plate for Sir Winston Churchill What happened to the stall plate made for Churchill by Harold Soper? The plate was rediscovered in the effects of Miss Viola Soper at her death in 1989 and was auctioned with her other possessions. It fetched £6,000. In 1992 it reappeared at a Sotheby’s auction in Geneva, but did not reach its reserve price and was withdrawn from sale. It was put up for auction again in 2011 by Bonhams at an estimated price of between £10,000 and £12,000 and is, presumably, now in private hands. A photograph of Soper’s stall plate for Churchill which is included in P Begent and H Chesshyre, The Most Noble Order of the Garter:650 Years (London, 1999) page 292 demonstrates the superiority of Soper’s work in design and execution. What a pity that it does not adorn the Quire of St George’s Chapel for which it was commissioned.
What I suggest is the formation of a new Republican Party based upon the traditions set by John and Jessie Fremont, as well as the traditions put forth by California Magazines that boosted the attributes of the West.
In answer to Traitors waving a Confederate flag in one hand, a Bible they know nothing about, in the other, I suggest ‘The Land of Sunshine’ ‘Out West’ and the ‘Overland Review’ be treated like Biblical Orthodoxy, and be a Guide to Western Behavior and Attitudes. I see a Country Court of Nine Guides, who will know these magazine from front to back. Their mission is not to solve every problem that comes along, but, keep The Western Republic’ on track. and, the members our party feeling good about themselves – and fellow Californians. Jessie Benton led a California Secessionist Movement in 1861, during the Civil War. I will investigate. The Fremonts should be the leaders of any movement to divide California. I found an image of a map made in 1781. California was named ‘Marpacifico’ that means “peaceful sea”. There is a Mar Pacfico Flower. It’s time for Republican Flower Power!
Though the peoples of Asia and Oceania have traveled the Pacific Ocean since prehistoric times, the eastern Pacific was first sighted by Europeans in the early 16th century when Spanish explorer Vasco Núñez de Balboa crossed the Isthmus of Panama in 1513 and discovered the great “southern sea” which he named Mar del Sur (in Spanish). The ocean’s current name was coined by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan during the Spanish circumnavigation of the world in 1521, as he encountered favorable winds on reaching the ocean. He called it Mar Pacífico, which in both Portuguese and Spanish means “peaceful sea”.[4]
John C. Frémont served from September 9, 1850, to March 3, 1851, as a Senator from California. Their third child, John C. Frémont, Jr., was born on April 19, 1851, at Las Mariposas, California. While the couple was visiting Paris, France, their fourth child, Anne Beverly Frémont, was born on February 1, 1853. Anne died five months later, on July 11, in Washington, D.C. Their fifth and final child, Francis Preston Frémont, was born on May 17, 1855, in Washington.
In 1856, Frémont’s antislavery position was instrumental in his being chosen as the first-ever Republicancandidate for President.[1] Jessie played an extremely active role in the campaign, rallying support for her husband. One particular campaign slogan read, “Frémont and Jessie too.” Her father, however, a lifelong Democrat, refused to endorse her husband’s bid for the presidency. This did not stop the supporters of Frémont from continuing to refer to her as the “first lady in the land,” a title her admirers continued to use throughout her life[4]
In the years following, the couple moved several times, living in California, St. Louis, and New York. She played an active role in the anti-Secession movement in California in 1861[5] and enlisted both Unitarian minister Thomas Starr King and writer Bret Harte to her crusade.[1] When Lincoln appointed Frémont as the Commander of the Department of the West in 1861, they returned to St. Louis.
Jessie Frémont served as her husband’s unofficial aide and closest adviser. The two shared the belief that St. Louis was unprepared for war and needed reinforcements and supplies, and both pressured Washington to send more supplies and troops. She threw herself into the war effort, helping to organize a Soldier’s Relief Society in St. Louis, and becoming very active in the Western Sanitary Commission, which provided medicine and nursing to soldiers injured in the war.
One of the most impressive feats of her political career came shortly after Frémont lost his position during the Civil War for issuing his own edict of emancipation, summarily freeing all of the slaves in Missouri, which antedated Lincoln’s own Emancipation Proclamation. Jessie actually traveled to Washington and pleaded with Lincoln on behalf of her husband, but to no avail.[6]

The Land of Sunshine was first published by the F. A. Pattee Publishing Company in June 1894 as a quarto measuring 9 by 12 inches (23 cm × 30 cm).[1]:38[6] It was originally ghost-edited by Charles Dwight Willard,[1]:47 while Harry Ellington Brook and Frank A. Pattee were both also involved in the creation and publication of the magazine.[1]:38–9 Willard was secretary of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce while he edited The Land of Sunshine, which from its inception was supportive of commercial interests in Los Angeles and San Diego to the extent that it would have caused a clear conflict of interest controversy if Willard was publicly linked to the magazine.[1]:40 According to Edwin Bingham, in its first volume The Land of Sunshine developed a long-standing dichotomy between covering regional commerce and culture.[1]:42 From its beginning, the magazine also took concerted measures to increase its circulation, including both imploring its readers to share copies with their friends and supplying public libraries around the United States with issues of the magazine.[1]:43
At the end of 1894 Charles Fletcher Lummis was publicly named editor of The Land of Sunshine, and the first issue produced under his control was January 1895.[1]:47–8 Lummis promised that the magazine’s coverage of Southern California would be “concise, interesting, expert, accurate” to the extent that it would be trusted by Eastern readers.[1]:48 He also placed an increased emphasis on the cultural and intellectual content of the magazine.[1]:49 According to the Los Angeles Times, he transformed the magazine from a “Chamber of Commerce promotional sheet” into a “sterling literary magazine” in which he voiced his own opinions about everything from art and philosophy to politics and current events.[7] Perhaps his favorite subjects, however, were championing Native American rights and criticizing the Federal Indian Policy.[6] Lummis was regarded as an “impulsive firebrand” as a thinker and a writer, and his ideas, both in The Land of Sunshine and other works, often had a polarizing effect on other writers and academics.[6] In June 1895, the magazine was reduced to dimensions of 6 by 9 inches (15 cm × 23 cm), although its total number of pages grew
You know, in this book I really tried to dispel the notion that the Civil War was just fought on a few hills and cornfields in Virginia, Tennessee, and Georgia. I very much wanted to show that the Civil War was also fought in thousands of communities and millions of families throughout the country.
At the outbreak of the American Civil War there was a serious debate about the course that California and the Far West would take. Many people out west were interested in separating into a Pacific Republic – a separate nation from the United States. This new nation would turn its back on the war in the east and face out onto the Pacific and its great potential.
The Civil War was really fought about the West, the future of America. Western expansion was one of the true flashpoints of the Civil War. The destiny of the west – slave or free soil – became a central issue as the United States continued to add western territories and states.
In my book I identified a few individuals who really epitomized this struggle for the future of California. The two characters that I focus on in California – Jessie Benton Fremont and Thomas Starr King – were two of my favorite characters in the book and really unlikely heroes in this struggle.
Jessie Benton Fremont, by virtue of being a woman and the wife of a prominent political figure, was someone who was not supposed to participate in political debate and statecraft. Despite these societal limitations, Jessie Fremont, an extraordinarily intellectual person, proved to be a remarkable political strategist. Her behind-the-scenes actions in support of the Union cause in California proved to be of great importance.
Thomas Starr King was perhaps an even less likely figure to play a major role in deciding the future of California. This pale, small, almost homunculus of a man, a Unitarian minister originally from Boston, had been very resistant to entering politics before arriving in California. But facing the real specter of secession, King and Jessie Benton Fremont soon became powerful partners working to keep California in the Union fold. Many people would later say that King was the man who saved California for the Union.
I predicted the demise of the Republican Party. I pointed out that the greatest crime about QAnon, is, it uses the alleged rape of children for political gain. I asked how many followers of Trump – do not believe the rape of children is true? The next day the sane world is entreated to the most vile testimony imaginable when Greene blames the free press for exploiting raped children – too. Greene admitted 911 was true, after saying it was not, and, the free press is trying to “divide us”. McCarthy accuses the Democrats of adding more fuel to the fire, and not once considers Cortez’s remark that she feared for her life, and her PTSD was activated because she was raped as a child.
According to Tom Snyder, all four Presco Children are victims of incest – and our grandchildren. Snyder says this – for profit – then walks away, he believing there is going to be a movie about the rape of children that will get him more money. Profits from the movie will not go to my two nieces, my late sister’s Heirs.

The real handicap I have owned most of my life, is my ability to see into the future. I had a dream about the Oakland fire. I saw into the future when I announced I was a candidate on April 18, 2019. “I understand that Marjorie’s comments have caused deep wounds to many and as a result, I offered Majority Leader Hoyer a path to lower the temperature and address these concerns,” McCarthy said. “Instead of coming together to do that, the Democrats are choosing to raise the temperature by taking the unprecedented step to further their partisan power grab regarding the committee assignments of the other party.”
Followers of QAnon could care less about the fake victims they invented. They are about getting more and more attention – by using raped children – that are not being raped. Most presidential candidates are entitled to receive Secret Service protection from the federal law enforcement agency that also provides security to all U.S. presidents and vice presidents and their families. Serious presidential candidates begin receiving Secret Service protection during the primary campaigns and continue to get coverage through the fall election if they become the nominee. Secret service protection for presidential candidates is provided for in federal law.
On this day, I found the European Union Kingdom of Helgoland. Elizabeth was once the Queen of the European Union. There were other nations that belonged to the EU that had royals who employed democratic nations in their title. China is celebrating the Death of the European Union, and is mocking Australia as being the symbol of the end of the British Commonwealth. At the same time, China eyes nations in Africa. Brexit, was the Beginning of the End. The Trumpites modeled their INSURECTION on Brexit.

The Fremont family spent much time in Europe. I believe Elizabeth Fremont burned the reason why. John and Jessie had a bodyguard made up of foreigners. They feared a foreign invasion, and Lincoln was aware of this;

Above is a photo of Germans reenacting Civil War battles. This is because 200,000 Germans fought in this bloody war. Many of them were Turners. My Prussian and German ancestors were Turners in the Bay Area and had to know what role they would play before my kindred in South Carolina went to war with the Union.
I suspect Carl Janke was part of an effort to make California a colony of the German Unification, if not the Liberal Prussian Capital of a revolt that was taking place throughout Europe led by the Forty-Eighters who made up the Radical Republicans, who nominated John Fremont as their first candidate for office of President of the United States. Lincoln could not have become President without the Germans who must have backed the Fourteenth Amendment so their children could be recognized Citizens of the U.S.A.
In Sunshine magazine, Jessie Fremont says Britain was getting ready to import (deport) thousands of pesky Irish Catholics to California, who could be made into an army to fight for the Confederacy. If the Union fell, I suspect Fremont was prepared to declare a Nation of the West, and launch a European front to defeat the foreign allies of Slave Masters Consider ISIS Slave Masters recruiting Europeans to come take young girls slaves, and rape them. Mary Confederate Generals raped young black slaves.
When Janke brought six portable house around the Cape and erected them in Belmont, it is said he did so to provide housing for gold miners who struck it rich. But gold had not been discovered. I believe these homes were made for leaders of the Prussian Unification and founding of the Prussian State of California and a United West, that was not a part of the Union. I suspect John Fremont gave much of his gold to this Nation Building.
Donald Trumps grandfather came from German and appeals to the racism of whites. He promises to force Mexico to build His Wall along the California border with Mexico. Is he forgetting that the Republican Neo-Confederate Conspiracy is for the strengthening of State Rights? Perhaps a reporter should remind him, and, suggest his desire for a Wall of Triumph be approved by California Voters.
Let me give a special shout-out to Hayato Tokugawa who removed my post ‘Trump – Get Out’ from his San Francsico Politics FB group I was invited to join. He got me banned from this group, and possibly from the ‘California History’ group I belonged to where I just posted photos of the Rosamond sisters and informed this group my sister was a famous artist. Hayato is a cartoonist and author, who did a painting of the Lone Cypress. This couple seem to enjoy dual citizenship. I consider this a cyber-attack. Hayato will be in my book ‘Capturing Beauty’. Does he know Minuro Isutani who owned Pebble Beach Golf Course and the Lone Cypress? Did Hayota pay his fee in order to paint the cypress that my kindred, Elizabeth Rosemond Taylor, made famous in the movie ‘National Velvet’.
I am going to found a new Vigilante Committee in order to thwart these usurpers of our American Culture. I challenge this ex-cop to a debate. Obviously he wanted to be the big shot artist and writer in town, and he and his wife the ruling Creative Family. Remember Pearl Harbor – and Ellwood! German-Americans in the American Civil War were the largest ethnic contingent to fight for the Union. More than 200,000 native Germans served in the Union Army, notably from New York and Ohio. Thousands also served in the Confederacy, being primarily descended from Pennsylvania German ancestors who had migrated to the Carolinas in the 18th century and early 19th century, along with Swabian, Swiss, and Austrian immigrants who arrived directly in the South.
The widespread – mainly German – revolutions of 1848–49 sought unification of Germany under a single constitution. The revolutionaries pressured various state governments, particularly those in the Rhineland, for a parliamentary assembly that would have the responsibility to draft a constitution. Ultimately, many of the left-wing revolutionaries hoped this constitution would establish universal male suffrage, a permanent national parliament, and a unified Germany, possibly under the leadership of the Prussian king. This seemed to be the most logical course since Prussia was the strongest of the German states, as well as the largest in geographic size. Generally, center-right revolutionaries sought some kind of expanded suffrage within their states and potentially, a form of loose unification. Their pressure resulted in a variety of elections, based on different voting qualifications, such as the Prussian three-class franchise, which granted to some electoral groups — chiefly the wealthier,
