Francis Salvador’s grandfather was a Portuguese Jew who had migrated to England from Amsterdam early in the 18th century. The family had previously secured the right to a coat of arms, perhaps in Portugal or the Netherlands. The grant issued by the College of Heralds, while not a patent of nobility, permitted the elder Salvador to call himself “gentleman.”
In 1755 the family acquired 100,000 acres of land, known henceforth as the “Jew’s Land,” in the Carolina Piedmont. That same year an earthquake destroyed the Salvadors’ holdings in Lisbon. The failure of the East India Company further depleted their assets. Hoping to recoup the family fortunes by planting indigo, young Francis Salvador set out for Carolina in 1773. He advertised for an overseer to manage the plantation and 30 slaves, but events of the American Revolution intervened.

Being removed from the dwelling she was rescued from the flames whilst the torch
was applied to the house, and her sisters perished in her presence whilst the war
dance and the song kept up the fiendish carnival.
UNWILLING BRIDE.
“Dorothy was perhaps the most unhappy and the most unwilling bride upon whom
the genial sunlight of South Carolina had ever fallen.
“She was carried west with the retreating foe of the white man, as the whites
gained supremacy, and as the days, weeks and months passed she was farther
removed from the pale of civilization. In the meantime, however, her husband
loved her with a devotion not characteristic of the Indian. The chief was proud
of and rejoiced in the possession of his beautiful “pale faced wife.” His love
for her and his association with her had a wonderfully refining influence over
the red man. At the birth of their son his affection seemed warmer than before.
If Dorothy had not learned to love her husband this child was loved by the mother
as only mothers can love. Away from the presence or association of a white person,
it seemed that her whole soul concentrated in her babe, and the love of father and
mother met in the infant boy, and they held sweet communion with each other as to
their child.
“Years passed by and the Indian was as kind as one of his nature could be, and she
had almost become reconciled to her fate.
“After the war had smoothed his wrinkled front” Dorothy expressed to her husband
a desire to see her friends and relatives in Carolina, and her husband, having
unbounded confidence in her loyalty now, arrangements were soon completed for a
visit to her old home. They were then living in Alabama. The Indian chief,
accompanied by Dorothy and her child, set out on the journey. When the husband
had come to the borders of the state, as far as it was safe at that time for him
to come, pledging anew their faith and love for each other, and after making
arrangements as to when he should meet her at the same place, on her return,
they separated.
“Little did either think that this was their final separation, but it was even so.
At the time in this country there was but little facility for the conveyance of
letters anywhere, but especially was this true as regards communication between
this place and the territory occupied by the unfriendly Indian. As a consequence
no word had been heard from her since her capture years before, and her friends
had mourned for her as for the dead.
“Very unexpectedly to everybody she returned to Cokesbury, and her friends
greatly rejoiced. At the meetiing of her relatives tears of joy were shed
and the father of General Hodges gave a grand feast to which all the relatives
and neighbors were invited, and they assembled in joy to greet the long lost
friend and relative.
“Once more in the bosom of her family, she became the prey of a thousand
conflicting emotions, until at last, when the time arrived for her return,
she yielded to the intercession of her friends and cast in her lot with
them henceforth.
“In the course of years she seemed to forget her troubles, and being yet of
fine personal appearance and possessed of attractive manners, a citizen by the
name of Rosemond sought her heart and hand in marriage. In the course of time
they were married, after which they remained in this county for a number of years
and to them were born a number of children. The family moved west, taking all
the children by the second marriage, and it is believed that there is now no
descendant of this branch of the Hodges family remaining in Abbeville county.
RETURNS TO FATHER.
“Before their departure the little Indian boy grew up, was sent to school,
and soon began to show the characteristics of the race. Having heard of his
father and wishing to learn more of his father and his people, he set out
before he had arrived at the age of maturity for the Indian territory from
which he never returned, and from him nothing was ever afterwards heard.
“General Hodges remembered seeing the Indian boy and heard the story, which we
have just related, from his mother’s own lips.
“General Hodges father lived within a mile and a half of the present site of
Hodges’ depot. General Hodges himself lived all his life within a mile and a
half of his birthplace. When he first went to housekeeping there was but little
cleared land in the county, and game was so plentiful that it ravaged the crops–
Mrs. Hodges once having shot a deer that was feeding in their turnip patch.
“General Hodges, by his industry and economy, managed to amass a considerable
fortune, and when he built his late dwelling 54 years ago, it was considered
the finest house above Columbia.
MEMBER LEGISLATURE.
“He was once a member of the state legislature, and long held a commissioned
office in the militia of the Savannah regiment. In all matters of public
interest he always took an active part, and at one time he was sent as
commissioner to the Indians, with whom he was exceedingly poplar, and who
were delighted because of his smoking with them the pipe of peace. The general
could send up volumes of smoke so much larger than they could, and they were so
much delighted that great numbers of the men and women of the neighborhood
assembled on the second day after his arrival to see the white man smoke the
pipe of peace.
“The town of Hodges was named for him, on the establishment of the railroad
depot at that place. When the telegraph line was finished to that place a few
years ago the first message, a congratulatory epistle was addressed to him as
the “Patriarch.” He preserved this message, which is still in possession of
the family. He was the ‘Pater Familias’ of the town which bears his name.”

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a presumptive challenger to Donald Trump as the Republican presidential primary gains steam, refused to confirm in Jerusalem on Thursday that he would be running, focusing instead on the importance of the US-Israel relationship and alleged missteps by the current White House.
“There’s not been anything set,” he said at a press conference following his keynote address at an event marking the 75th anniversary of Israel’s independence. “I’ve been focused on this mission that we’ve been doing.”
DeSantis addressed a packed auditorium in Jerusalem Thursday morning at the Museum of Tolerance Jerusalem. The “Celebrate the Faces of Israel” conference comes the same week as the 75th anniversary of Israel’s independence. The governor, flanked by his wife Casey, arrived to cheers in the standing-room only auditorium.
“We must support Israel’s right to defend itself,” he said to the friendly crowd.

Many Americans are baffled by the mobs on college campuses and the streets of major U.S. cities chanting for Israel’s destruction and the genocide of its people.
That so many of their fellow citizens – regardless of their age, education, ideology or background – would openly take the side of Hamas, the terror group that started a war on Oct. 7 with the largest mass slaughter of Jews since the Holocaust, remains mind-boggling. So is the fact that those who call themselves “progressives” are now rooting not just for the cessation of suffering for Palestinians but for the survival of a reactionary Islamist terrorist organization that despises their beliefs.
Take, for example, “queers for Palestine,” who practice an alternative lifestyle that would have earned them a brutal execution in pre-Oct. 7 Gaza ruled by Hamas, but who sympathize with the Oct. 7 barbarians and deplore Israel’s efforts to eliminate them. It’s equally true about most others sounding the “from the river to the sea” slogan, whose grasp of the conflict is so flimsy that few can identify either body of water.
The problem transcends such obvious absurdities.
Even their manifest tone deafness about the way they are trafficking in traditional tropes of antisemitism similarly provides little insight into their motivations. How can anyone demand that Hamas be allowed to emerge triumphant from a war begun by atrocious crimes against humanity, or that the Islamists ultimately be allowed to enact their fantasy of a world without Israel and its 7 million Jewish inhabitants?
The answer is simple. They think they are the good guys and that their opponents are intrinsically evil. And that is why the attempts on the part of publications like The New York Times to analogize the anti-Israel protesters to those who demonstrated against the Vietnam War more than a half century ago are worth considering. Such claims are wildly inaccurate since the two conflicts have nothing to do with each other. But in some ways, this evocation of the past provides a telling insight into the psychology and motivations of contemporary left-wing antisemites.

It was December 1861, a Tuesday at noon, when President Abraham Lincoln sent his first annual message — what later became the State of the Union — to the House and Senate.
By the next day, all 7,000 words of the manuscript were published in newspapers across the country, including the Confederate South. This was Lincoln’s first chance to speak to the nation at length since his inaugural address.

“How do we make sure that people who have not had their voices heard feel that their voices are heard, with others who will not feel that they are being relegated to the back? It is not easy,” Fingerhut said.
He cautioned that American support for Israel depends on Israel’s status as a democracy. “Look, we are Americans at the end of the day. Checks and balances. It is in our blood,” he said.
Experts say such a delicate dance comes down to one word: Syria.

As part of the lawsuit that Disney has filed against Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, one of the points of relief that Disney seeks from the court is to declare DeSantis’ takeover of the Reedy Creek Improvement District unconstitutional.
At Wednesday’s meeting, Disney Springs business owners appealed to DeSantis’s board for help. Representatives from Wine Bar George, Splitsville, T-Rex Cafe, Yak and Yeti, The Boathouse, and more were present at the meeting to express their concerns after the board voted to void an agreement between the State of Florida and Disney Springs tenants, upping their taxes to fund the battle between DeSantis and Reedy Creek.

“Most cities are just going to do a pareve 75th anniversary of Israel and not recognize the emotional reality of a lot of Israelis right now,” said Rabbi Yohanna Kinberg, using the Jewish term for food that contains neither meat nor dairy — in other words, a safe option.

JERUSALEM — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed legislation cracking down on hate crimes Thursday morning after a high-profile speech in Israel.
Known as the “Public Nuisances” bill, the legislation — passed Wednesday by the state Legislature — makes it a felony for hate groups to harass people for their religion or ethnicity. Florida had the fourth-highest number of antisemitic incidents in 2022, according to the Anti-Defamation League.
DeSantis is in Israel as part of his overseas trade mission with stops in Japan and South Korea. He also met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Thursday before wrapping up the global trip in the United Kingdom.
“He’s a friend of Israel,” Netanyahu said in an interview with NBC News shortly after the meeting. “We talked about Iran. We talked about Israel-U.S. relations.”
DeSantis’ travels come as he prepares to join the 2024 presidential contest as soon as mid-May.
DeSantis also signed a measure to combat antisemitism while in Israel on a 2019 trip. That legislation was aimed at preventing discrimination on the basis of religion in Florida publ
DeSantis addressed a packed auditorium in Jerusalem Thursday morning at the Museum of Tolerance Jerusalem. The “Celebrate the Faces of Israel” conference comes the same week as the 75th anniversary of Israel’s independence. The governor, flanked by his wife Casey, arrived to cheers in the standing-room only auditorium.
“We must support Israel’s right to defend itself,” he said to the friendly crowd.
DeSantis shared his often-told story about using water from the Sea of Galilee to baptize his children — and how people in Israel sent him some replacement holy water when staff at the governor’s mansion in Florida mistakenly threw out a half-empty bottle.
He also stressed national security issues.
“Iran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons creates a risk like you’ve not seen in this region,” DeSantis said. “It’s an existential threat to the state of Israel and to the United States of America.”
DeSantis’ supposedly pro-business trade mission risks being overshadowed by a growing controversy back home: the dramatic escalation of his feud with Disney, with the entertainment giant accusing the governor of being anti-business and orchestrating a “targeted campaign of government retaliation” in a new lawsuit.
DeSantis dismissed the lawsuit as “political” at his press conference following his speech Thursday, in response to a question from NBC News.
Aside from the official state purposes of the trip to Israel, it also is a way to bolster his the governor’s foreign policy credentials after he faced backlash for calling the war in Ukraine a “territorial dispute.” He later clarified his comments, calling Russian President Vladimir Putin a “war criminal.”
Netanyahu is seen as a staunch ally of former President Donald Trump, who is running for a second term in 2024 and has been relentlessly attacking DeSantis over the past few months.
“We didn’t talk about American politics,” Netanyahu told NBC News in the Thursday interview. “I have enough politics here.”
Netanyahu has been wary of being seen as interfering in U.S. elections before. In 2012, he denied doing so after a clip of him was featured in an ad for Republican nominee Mitt Romney. Analysts don’t expect Israelis to signal a clear preference for either Trump or DeSantis — at least not yet.
“I imagine that every Israeli politician will try to stay out of it and try to say that both of them are friends of Israel,” said Prof. Jonathan Rynhold, the head of the department of political studies at Bar-Ilan University. “Whether former President Trump lets Israeli politicians do that or not is another question because he tends to see things in very personal terms.”
In 2017, DeSantis and other U.S. lawmakers traveled to Israel to tour possible sites for moving the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem. In his speech Thursday, he said he tried to “cajole” the previous administration to move the embassy. At the time, he met with Yehudah Glick, a Brooklyn-born rabbi and former Knesset member who Palestinians see as a far-right lightning rod. He survived an assassination attempt in 2015, and later unsuccessfully ran for president.
In an interview with NBC News ahead of DeSantis’ visit, Glick praised DeSantis’ family values and his support of moving the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem. Former President Trump ended up announcing the move later in 2017, though Glick stressed he has no inside knowledge of whether DeSantis’ public advocacy played any role in that.
“Ron DeSantis was extremely active in trying to locate the exact place to put the embassy,” Glick said. “I was very impressed by how much he was devoted to it.”

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a presumptive challenger to Donald Trump as the Republican presidential primary gains steam, refused to confirm in Jerusalem on Thursday that he would be running, focusing instead on the importance of the US-Israel relationship and alleged missteps by the current White House.
“There’s not been anything set,” he said at a press conference following his keynote address at an event marking the 75th anniversary of Israel’s independence. “I’ve been focused on this mission that we’ve been doing.”
He did take several swipes at the Middle East policies of US President Joe Biden, who announced on Tuesday that he would seek reelection.
“Prior to this administration taking office, the Middle East was probably in as good a shape as it’s been in in a long time,” he said, indirectly lauding his likely GOP primary opponent.
“I think that this administration has worked overtime to alienate the Saudis,” DeSantis charged.
Biden had pledged as a candidate to treat Saudi Arabia as a “pariah” because of the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, and as president threatened “consequences” for the Gulf kingdom after it led OPEC oil cuts.

Israel is working to normalize relations with the Saudis, a goal Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised to achieve. “Absolutely I think with proper policy and proper relations, you could see Saudi Arabia recognize the existence of Israel,” said the Florida governor.
He also blasted the approach Biden and his former boss Barack Obama took toward Iran.
“We saw the failure with the Iranian nuclear deal that was done in 2015 that flooded Iran with money, that rejuvenated their economy, and that led to the funding of terrorism all across the Middle East,” he said.
“During the previous administration, the Trump administration, Iran was on the ropes. Iran was in dire straits because there was an effort to hold them accountable,” he added, one of several times he referred approvingly to Trump’s Middle East policy.
He also praised Trump’s 2018 decision to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, which he called “the eternal capital of the Jewish people.”

Belmont Historian Destroys Black History

These posts were taken down from the Belmont Historic Society by one or more alleged volunteers. Cynthia Karpa McCarthy takes all the blame in order to get me to rage at her via personal e-mail, and, or, she wants to be THEIR champion so she can write a new book employing my family who founded Belmont, and were German Turnverein. They read these posts- and winced! I was their worst nightmare – alas come home to roost. I believe Cynthia came across my blog, Royal Rosamond Press, in her studies. THEY conspired on how to take care of me – and remove my posts. No one extended his/her welcoming hand to a senior – who owns the same DNA Carl Janke & Sons own! My Rosamond Ancestors were Patriots in South Carolina, and ARE the Good ol Boys! They would not dream of treating anyone like a Carpetbagger – today! I now rename Belmont….BELABAMA!

Black History ended yesterday. The New Dawn of the Turnverein – began yesterday when The Golden Chump declared himself The Divine Healer of the Treacherous Republican Party co-founded by my kin, John Fremont, Jessie Benton, and the Forty-Eighters, of which my Stuttmeister Ancestors belonged, and the Janke family. William Janke founded a Turnverein Hall on Bush Street in San Francisco. There was a Turnverein in Redwood City. I will be sending this outrage to the German Consulate. Are they aware that John Fremont was the first to emancipate black slaves -while surrounded by a foreign bodyguard, some of them German Socialists – who put Lincoln in the White House?

My friend Ed Howard posted on seeing a film about the Black Panthers. I have been posting on the Belmont Historical Society. We chatted about applying for a grant from the Buck Foundation yesterday after I told him I talked to three people in charge of honoring the last wishes of Berle Buck – who is still keen on maintaining her good reputation – in the tradition of Estate Planning. Robert Buck set up the foundation with his law expertise. I am repairing the devastating attack on the legacy of my late sister, Christine Rosamond Benton, who is a great asset to the City of Belmont. They want this creative history to boost their plans for downtown, and any arts projects. I told them about the Benton artists.

On June 1, 1968, I was driving my 1949 Ford down Adeline when I saw a crowd in Defremery Park. I saw a white man on truck talking to a crowd of black people. Up front were about twenty Black Panthers shouting and pumping their fists. I had pulled over, and now got out of my car and walked to the edge of the crowd. I could not believe I was hearing the voice of Robert Kennedy. In doing research on this speech I discovered John F. Kennedy spoke here on November 2, 1960. I am sure Bobby was making a statement, that he intends to walk in his brothers footsteps which is tragic for Bobby was murdered on June 5th. I had seen John drive through Oakland on his way up Telegraph. There was a light around his head. His younger brother had that same light.

Black Turnverein

Yesterday, I admitted I have gotten out of shape due to COVID-19. Today I founded the Black Turnverein Channel that hopefully will be broadcast across America. Many black athletes will not be taking the field in our Nation’s colleges. I moved to Springfield fourteen years ago and bonded with some of the black Oregon Ducks. For awhile there was a group of blacks who met near the playground to do exercise. I joined them. I was seventy years – young!
With the coming of Black Live’s Matter, the whole world is looking at major issues that can, and will change the course of world history. It was traditional for Turnverein Clubs to hold debates of all kinds. These German immigrants go involved in our Democracy and served in the Union Army and helped defeat the Confederate Conspiracy – which is still alive! With my discovery my kin, John Fremont, formed the Radical Democracy Party in order to get Abraham Lincoln to drop out of the rice, opens up a huge field of topics in regards to how thoroughly black slaves were oppressed in the United States.
I would like to see the Black Panthers found a Black Turnverein in Oakland California. There is talk about armed Black Militias. My kin, Carl Janke, founded a Turnverein in Belmont and San Francisco where a armed Vigilante Committee may have been preparing to fight the Confederacy – as well as maintaining Law and Order. These issue are up! This history has returned.
I am for seeing armed black groups – if they take advantage of the Turnverein history. I would love to see the Black Panthers marching down Broadway and parading at Merritt College – after the coronavirus is no longer a threat. Being of sound body and mind was the motive of the Turnverein that admitted Jews who went on of the create Muscular Judaism, and, founded the New Israel. Are we to see Jews doing the goosestep in Los Angeles where live the largest Jewish population outside Israel? I have roots in Reformed Judaism.
I highly suggest BLM contact Ursula Von Der Leyen who went to Stanford. Tell her you want to set up a cultural exchange with Germany. Blacks should learn German. English is the language of the slave masters. I would start classical music clubs and learn the goose step that many nations south of the Trump Wall have adopted. I would recognize Cuba, who were taught to goose step by the Russians – who learned it from my Prussian kin. The Germans were for the cultural advancement of the black slaves – they were determined to set free! Germany did take part in the slave trade and there is reparation conversation about the genocide of Africans. Perhaps Germans will donate violins and other instrument to black students – who may not go back to school. The Black Turnverein channel can teach children to play and speak German. Why Trump and the Republicans snub Germany, is to say:
“The enemy of my enemy – is my friend!”

The Fremont family spent much time in Europe. I believe Elizabeth Fremont burned the reason why. John and Jessie had a bodyguard made up of foreigners. They feared a foreign invasion, and Lincoln was aware of this;
“President knew we were on the eve of England, France and Spain recognizing the South: they were anxious for a pretext to do so; England on account of her cotton interests, and France because the Emperor dislikes us.”
Above is a photo of Germans reenacting Civil War battles. This is because 200,000 Germans fought in this bloody war. Many of them were Turners. My Prussian and German ancestors were Turners in the Bay Area and had to know what role they would play before my kindred in South Carolina went to war with the Union.
