Looking back: ‘Animal House’ photos from Eugene tell the story of the comedy classic

Actor Peter Riegert as Donald "Boon" Schoenstein (left) and Tim Matheson as Eric "Otter" Stratton practice their golf swings on the knoll overlooking Hayward Field in a still from the movie Animal House shot in 1977. The West Grandstands were still under construction the year the movie was filmed. Forty-one years later both the West and East Grandstands have been torn down to make way for a redesigned track and field venue.
Turned into a parking lot in 1986, the site of the fictitious Delta Tau Chi fraternity featured in the movie Animal House lives again in a publicity still of the cast during shooting in 1977. The site is now occupied by Northwest Christian University's School Education and Counseling and Oregon Foot and Angle Center. The movie Animal House turns 40 this year and whether you think the movie has aged well since its release in 1978, it is hard to argue that some parts of it live in the memories of people who call the area home. The Register-Guard takes a look a the legacy of the movie and revisit some of the locations that have remain.
The Phi Kappa Psi fraternity in Eugene was used as the location for one of the fraternities in the movie Animal House. Members of the cast sit on the lawn of the site in a still from the movie shot in 1977 as they taunt members of the rival Delta House.
Actor James Daughton as Greg Marmalard (left) joins actress Mary Louise Weller in her role as Mandy Pepperidge during a visit the top of Skinner Butte in Eugene in a still image from the movie Animal House.
The Knight Library's north facing facade has changed little since it provided a backdrop for the fictional Faber College in the movie Animal House in 1977. A statue of the fictional founder was placed in the quad area for the film.
Gerlinger Hall on the University of Oregon campus has changed little since it was used as the location of Emily Dickinson College in the movie Animal House.
Actress Lisa Baur as Shelly Dubinsky (left) meets Eric "Otter" Stratton, played by Tim Matheson, in the entry of Gerlinger Hall on the University of Oregon campus in a still image from Animal House. The lobby area has changed little in 40 years.
The Dexter Lake Club has had its ups and downs over the years since it was used as a location for a night on the town by the main characters in Animal House, but the iconic bar is still in operation with the latest owners embracing the location's place in cinematic history with memorabilia and theme nights.
The cast of Animal House visits the Dexter Lake Club in a still from the movie. The club has embraced its legacy in the movie and added many artifacts and souvenirs to the decor.
Members of the Emerald Mountain Band play on the same stage that hosted the fictional band Otis Day and the Knights in a scene shot at the Dexter Lake Club for the movie Animal House. The restaurant and bar celebrated the release of the movie with an anniversary party in July of 2018.
Eric "Otter" Stratton, played by Tim Matheson stands in the doorway of the Dexter Lake Club in a movie still during the cast's trip to see Otis Day and the Knights. The bar has embraced its movie legacy and has added many souvenirs from the movie to the decor.
Johnson Hall on the University of Oregon campus appears in many scenes in the movie Animal House. Here Faber College Dean Vernon Wormer, played by actor John Vernon, is seen in a still from the movie looking out the window of his office.
Actor John Vernon (left) as Dean Vernon Wormer scolds members of the Delta House about their poor grades in a still from the movie Animal House. The scene was shot in a conference room that was, and still is, part of the offices of the President of the University of Oregon.
In a still frame from the movie Animal House, actor John Belushi, one of the few established stars among the young actors in the movie, is juxtaposed against Johnson Hall on the University of Oregon campus from a sequence in which as he helps smuggle a horse into the dean's office as part of a college prank.
Actors Bruce McGill (left) as Daniel Simpson Day, Stephen Furst as Kent Dorfman and John Belushi as John Blutarsky smuggle a horse into the office of Dean Vernon Wormer during a prank gone wrong in a still image from the movie Animal House. Local actor Izzy Whetstine, who played Mr. Mycolostomy in the movie Animal House, prepares to remove a dead horse in a still from the movie Animal House. Whetstine appears several times in the movie in his role as the fictitious Faber College's handyman.
A bar in the basement of what is now the Northwest Christian University School of Professional Studies on East 11th Ave. played a role in the fictional Delta Tau Chi fraternity toga party scene in the movie Animal House. The area is used for storage now and is not open to the public.
Eric "Otter" Stratton, played by actor Tim Matheson, turns the tables on the Pan-hellenic Disciplinary Council in a scene from the movie Animal House. The sequence was shot in the main lecture room in Fenton Hall on the University of Oregon campus in 1977. The room has been extensively remodeling since the film was made.
Douglas Kenney (center), one of the two original script writers for the movie Animal House, played a role in the movie as well, stepping in as one of the Delta House fraternity members. In one of his big scenes playing the character Stork, he takes over as the drum major of the marching band during the parade sequence and leads them into an alley ahead of the chaos. Kenny co-founded the magazine National Lampoon in 1970. He died in 1980.
East Main St. in Cottage Grove has undergone some changes since the climatic parade scene in the movie Animal House was filmed there over 40 years ago in the fall of 1977.
The south side of East Main St. at 8th St. in Cottage Grove has changed little since it was the scene of a collision between a fraternity float and the Deathmobile, disguised as a cake, during the climatic parade sequence in the movie Animal House filmed in the fall of 1977.
Actor Kevin Bacon as ROTC cadet Chip Diller, seen in a still frame from the movie Animal House, tries in vain to calm a riot during the parade sequence on the southwest corner of East Main St. and South 6th St. in Cottage Grove. Animal House was Bacon's first movie role.
The Deathmobile from a scene in the movie Animal House spins in the middle of East Main St. in Cottage Grove in front of The Grove Cafe & Lounge which still sports its iconic neon sign with the word "FOOD" over the entrance.
The Fishbowl in the ERB Memorial Union on the University of Oregon campus provided the location for the famous "food fight" scene in the movie Animal House. The location has gone through many remodels over the years, but with the return of booths along the window over looking University St. the cafeteria looks much the same as it did in 1977.

After finding the neglected tombstone of George Melvin Miller, a story ran on the news about cottages and possible barracks being torn down on Columbia Terrace in Eugene to make way for a large building that will process food for the University of Oregon. I am certain these residences sit upon land that was once owned by George Miller, and his partner, University of Oregon Professor, John Straub. This might constitute the first partnership between the UofO  and residential land development which in itself is historic and should be preserved because this relationship has been controversial and needs to be studied. If this study is conducted after the homes are torn down, then there will forever be a gaping wound for the future to see.

George Miller platted Florence, and was the promoter of this fair city by the sea. George was the promoter of the Winnemucca to the Sea highway which is connected to the famous Route 66. But, more stunning than this, there is much evidence George was inspired by his brother who had a home in the Oakland Hills he called ‘The Hights’. Here was an outdoor salon for poets and artists who came from all over the world. Joaquin Miller planted thousands of three in the bare hills from where you could see the city lights of San Francisco. There were cable cars on rails, like the rails you can still see making their way up the hills of Fairmount to Hendrick’s Park and the Rhododendron gardens.

Miller and Joaquin promoted the Rhododendron Festival in Florence. Joaquin co-founded the Bohemian Club that met in the redwood groves near the Russian River. Here famous authors and artist met once a year. Jack London and George Sterling were promoters of the Bohemian Life. They made Carmel by the Sea what it is today. My famous sister, Christine Rosamond, has a gallery here. My late sister married into the historic Benton family who fought to keep the Oregon Territory out of British hands. My grandfathers founded the city of Belmont south of San Francisco.

The Stuttmeisters had an orchard just below the Hights. Joaquin would carry my father in his lap when he went with my grandmother to SF on the trolley. My kindred built forty new homes on new streets they named after trees. Did George meet these developers we see having a picnic in the redwood groves in the Oakland Hills.

When we were young the Presco children would call Juanita Miller on the phone and pretend we had a broken heart. George’s niece was known as the ‘White Witch’ and gave advice to the sick at heart. I lived at the Stoneridge apartment on 19th. and Harris for twelve years. I would take walks in the nearby hills and feel right at home. I now wonder if George borrowed the architecture of Oakland, and transplanted them to Fairmount.  If so, then we are looking at a historic link between the Bay Area and Eugene that needs to broadcast rather than diminished.

In Berkeley a developer bull-dozed a whole city block in order to build student housing. He did not consult the city managers who put a stop to it, then held a contest to see what We the People could do to heal this wound. I drew up plans for a school for how to plant urban gardens.

What I see as a solution, is a property trade. I suggest the UofO found and build a Service Industry College and culinary School along the river, near where Agri-Pac used to be. I see students planting garden along the river where a trolley car run bring their parents and citizens to the restaurant son the water’s edge. Here they can enjoy the finest cuisine in the world cooked by UofO students whose dream it is to become world-famous chefs.  Seventy percent of Americas are employed in the service industry. Retirement communities are always looking for good cooks. Let this huge cafeteria be an architectural showcase, and not be another ugly monolith fallen to earth from Planet Ugly!

Joaquin Miller had dinner with Dante Gabriella Rossetti and the Pre-Raphaelite Artists and Poets who found Fair Rosamond to be one of the favorite Muses. Rhododendron means ‘Rose Tree’ . I beheld rose trees at the corner of Flora and Fairmount. This is a rosy tale of two cities, and two brothers who shared the same dream. Do not let this dream, die!

Yesterday, Eugene City Manager returned my call. We discussed the idea about having these barrack-cottages house homeless Veterans who want to go to college and own hope, and a dream! Today, Senator John Walsh of Montana will introduce legislation to get Vets who suffer from PTSD much-needed help. The CEO of Starbucks just donated thirty million dollars for this purpose. Starbucks is huge in the service industry. Here is a marriage, a bond, made between those who serve the Citizens of the United States.  I believe it is time for the UofO to join forces, because I will make a good case that these barracks should be registered a National Monument because they one housed soldier at Camp White. They were to the Miller Brother’s Dream Town.

From 1886 to his death in 1913, Joaquin Miller resided on a hill in Oakland, in a home he called “The Hights” [sic]. He planted the surrounding trees and he personally built, on the eminence to the north, his own funeral pyre (not used) and monuments dedicated to Moses, explorer General John C. Frémont, and the poets Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett Browning. The Japanese poet Yone Noguchi began his literary career while living in the cabin adjoining Millers’ during the latter half of the 1890s. The Hights was purchased by the city of Oakland in 1919.[4] It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1962.[3][5] The simple Victorian style house is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 15, 1966. The Joaquin Miller House is located within Joaquin Miller Park, at Joaquin Miller Road and Sanborn Drive in the Oakland Hills

1890 George Melvin Miller and Professor John Straub purchased 415 acres for the sum of $39,000. On November 4, 1890, the town of Fairmount was platted and dedicated. George Melvin Miller was born near Coburg in 1853. He studied law under Judge Joshua J. Walton and set up a law practice in Eugene and served as the deputy district attorney in 1882-83. He platted the town of Florence in 1887 and was a great promoter of highways, which included Route 126, the main road between Eugene and Florence. Miller envisioned Fairmount as the perfect location for the Lane County seat because of its central location between Springfield and Eugene. Lots began to sell in 1891 and the first post office was established. Fairmount was incorporated in 1892 and Miller launched an aggressive publicity campaign to sell additional lots. By 1894 Miller had concluded his involvement in Fairmount. Condon School was constructed in 1924 and continues in educational use for the University of Oregon as Agate Hall. In 1925 Fairmount Heights was platted and extensive street paving was done to open the area for residential development. Fairmount was annexed to the City of Eugene in 1905. In 1906, T.G. Hendricks donated ten acres of land for a public park, now established as Hendricks Park. By 1907 houses were given street numbers, streetlights, sidewalks and graded streets. In 1907 the streetcar barns for the Eugene trolley were constructed along Franklin and the Fairmount Loop streetcar connected the neighborhood to the Masonic Cemetery, University of Oregon and downtown. Commercial businesses included a sash and door factory, planing mill and furniture factory, a brick yard, two florists and a greenhouse complex, Williams Bakery, two grocery stores and a butcher shop along with filling stations and car lots along Franklin. Following World War II the timber industry of Lane County exceeded agricultural production. New construction was at an all time high and nearly 300 new residences were constructed between 1948 and 1949.

The neighborhood is notable for its wide tree-lined streets and public parks. Villard Street is a 100-foot wide boulevard with a planting strip separating the lanes of traffic. In 1908, over 1000 trees were ordered for planting in the neighborhood. Lindens were planted on Columbia, horse chestnuts on Moss and Orchard, maples on Villard and Fairmount, and walnuts on Walnut. Elm trees were planted along Agate Street in 1909. Many of these trees survive today. In 1906, T.G. Hendricks donated ten (10) acres of land for a public park (what is now a portion of Hendricks Park). Washburne Park, originally the gardens and lawns of the Washburne residence, was donated to the city for use as a public park by Mrs. Carl Washburne.

George Melvin Miller was titled ‘The Prophet of Lane County’.  Lane County was named after Joseph Lane who ran with John Breckenridge for the White House.  John is my kindred via John Preston who is kin to Jessie Benton Fremont who authored her husband’s journal about his expedition into the Oregon Territory. Joseph wrote a letter to Rose O’Neal, a Confederate spy. It is alleged Joseph helped Joaquin Miller become the editor of the Eugene City Democratic Register, a pro-slavery newspaper. However, there is no proof of this, or, Miller was for the Confederacy.  Quite the contrary. Joaquin Miller worshipped the ‘Pathfinder’ who was the first Presidential candidate nominated by the Republican Abolitionist Party. Miller made a folly to Fremont on his property in the Oakland Hills above where my great grandfather, William Stuttmeister, had a farm. William built about forty homes in Fruit Vale, a city that was later incorporated into Oakland. This rock monument supposedly marks the spot where Fremont first got a glimpse of the Golden Gate. Joaquin wrote a book called ‘City Beautiful’ and appears to be part of that movement.  I suspect his brother George was also, because he lay out the plan for two town, Florence, and Fairmount. Fairmount was in the hills above Eugene between 27th. Ave, and the Willamette. The Mathew Knight Arena is built upon land that once belonged to George.  Was George inspired by his visits to ‘The Hights’  as Joaquin called his Mecca for California Artists and Poets? The testimony on George’s nameless tombstone, reads “Promoter Fairmount & Winnemucca to the sea, by Oregon, Lewis & Clark, D.A.R” What does this mean “Winnemucca to the sea”?  In my novel I write about my 1950 Dodge breaking down in this desert town located on Route 66.  When I got home and on my computer, I read about the building of a from the desert to the sea. But, instead of going to Florence as George Miller intended, this road ended up in Crescent City. The Promoter’s dream, had missed the mark. He died not knowing – they almost got it right! Folks who believed in George’s dream tried to get a marker honoring him on the Siuslaw River Bridge that Miller also promoted – while he was alive! Miller objected, and I assume left instructions to not include his name on his marker – just his two dreams!  If you don’t know a man’s dream, then, you don’t know the man! Later, someone placed a marker at George’s feet. I planted two Petunias by the Miller markers.  I had traded some items at  Isabella’s Garden in Brownsville for seven plants.  I saluted George’s Dream that I compared to Fremont’s. Here lie the unsung ‘Pathfinder’ who likened himself to Lewis and Clark. I had meant to declare myself a Newspaper Man, but, remembered when I came upon a fire in the town of Coburg. It was deliberately set by the fire department. I was in shock to see this beautiful Victorian going up in smoke. I talked to two fire fighters about why the town did not save it. They told me they tried, but, no one wanted it. I am going to investigate, because, I am a reporter for Royal Rosamond Press, a newspaper registered in Lane County. I then walked into a antique store and asked the proprietor if she had a spindle for sale.  She took me into the back room and showed me three spinning wheels that were once owned by an old woman who recently suffered from three strokes.  I tried to get information about this woman, but, was not given her name.  After seeing a incredible photo of her ancient mother, spinning, the Legend of Sleeping Beauty overcame me! Alas, I had found her, she not able to communicate after her strokes! In a comatose state, her dream is taken to an antique store, it all in pieces. I am upset, because her history is about to be lost! Did she live in that house that was being burned down? Did she know the Millers, and the Dreamer of Fairmount, the Lost City that is no more, it swallowed up in that ongoing disaster – Eugene City Planning? Sleeping Beauty was named, Rosamond, my mother’s maiden name. There is Fair Rosamond, and a Floral City by the sea. There is Belmont, a city cofounded by my great grandfather in California. The Cogswell-Miller home in Eugene is surrounded by Rose Trees, Rhodadendrons! The next day I went to East face of Skinner Butte and looked at the two homes that are associated with John Cogswell and his family.  John is the unsung Founding Father. Then I went to look at where Eugene built his log cabin. My late adopted son, Hollis Williams lived across the street in a unit reserved for Homeless Veterans. For fifteen years Hollis worked at Agra Pac, and could not get hired after it close down. H took me to a company picnic held in a park. Hollis was a Dreamer. This is why he was loved by many. He would crawl out from under a bridge where he slept many a cold night, and walk into Safeway, he all smiles, he already talking about his dream he wanted to belong to everyone. When it was certain he would be getting some Social Security money, he wanted to buy me some Disney Stock from a broker in the mall.  He also wanted to invest in Doug Hennesy’s unfinished movie we were an extra in. Two months  after Hud-Vash got him into a apartment,  Hollis died.  Being homeless for ten years was listed as one of the causes. It was Hollis who talked me into opening an account at Selco. I used to title H “The Real Mayor of Springfield” because he always knew your name, and greeted you with a smile. When I was in Selco last Thursday,  I was greeted by the winning smile of Kate Young who had a table set up for the company she works for, Windemere Real Estate. I sat down and told he about my dream that was hatched in Brownsville the day before.  She got onboard and furthered my inspiration down the road. When I learned Windemere has a foundation that helps the homeless, I suggested we meet again. You can see Kate’s video below, the last one. While filming at the Butte, a Veteran of the United States Air Force, came outside and was talking about the two eagles he just saw.  They were flying in formation, side by side, then, one peeled off. The Dream……………….lives on! I sent the following message to Congressman Peter DeFazio.

Dear Congressman; My mother was in the WAVES and was stationed in the Northwest. Her job was to listen to Russian propaganda broadcast at U.S. Citizens. Since I was thirteen she told her children Roosevelt was making plans to invade Russia as soon as Japan and Germany was defeated. My late friend, Ben Toney, was in the Navy, and commanded Radio London, a pirate ship that was anchored off the coast of Britain. As I discovered, Herbert Armstrong funded about half the cost of broadcasting music because they broadcast his religious messages that emanated from KORE located in Springfield. I tried to save this radio station, but, it was torn down. This morning I read your fellow Congressmen have reached back into the Cold War to reborn such a program that I am very supportive of. The Open Translation and Analysis Center (OTAC)  is an excellent idea. I would like to broadcast my own show. I was verbally harassed by my neighbors when I told one I am a prophet, and my posts on Toney and Armstrong, were prophetic. I am concerned about Christian groups taking part in the Insurrection. In 2000 I approached you while you were jogging near the Campbell Center, and offered by theological expertise in dealing with the rise of the Christian-right. You said this was a good idea, and suggested I contact your office. I wish I had.

Treatment for a Cable Television Series aimed at thwarting the advance of the New World Order and crushing Fuzzy Bear along with the Russian Trolls who are hell bent on contaminating our National Elections. It is my hope Hollywood and HBO gets behind my effort to save the United States and Europe from the Orange Menace. I will be sending my idea to my Congressman, Peter DeFazio to see if he can procure funding.

When I awoke this morning I was in awe of the article about Putin’s oppression of his own people. The double eagle symbol appeared at the bottom of the photos of the Puppet Master, along with a crown. Is POTUS helping Putin become King of the World?

Then I saw the two women being manhandled by The Goon Squad. I gasped! Here’s agent 008, and, 009! Victoria Bond and Miriam Starfish Christling of the British Secret Service are on the job! Where are our people?

In looking at the video of KORE again, I noticed what looks like a meteor striking the earth near Salem (Jerusalem) Oregon. Then I saw it – THE BURNING BUSH!

Oh my God! This is it! The End Time Elijah has come!

Chapter One

The Combination Lock of King David

John Ambrose was peddling his classic Schwinn  he named ‘Blue Bird’ past Herbert Armstrong’s old radio station KORE, when he saw an old bearded man running for the gate of the cyclone fencing – with barbered wire. He was fumbling with the combination lock, and cursing. John pulled up.

“Can I help you?”

“Yes! Thank God. Hurry! I lost my glasses inside, and cant’ read the numbers. Here, let me slip the lock to you. Ready? Here’s the combo……….12………..22………19……….2. Got it? Hurry! They’re coming!”

“What was that last number?”

“Two! Two! – TWO!”

John shot the old man a hard glance. He was treating him like a moron.

“There. Your free!”

“Thanks!” the old man said, and glanced both ways down the street. He was very agitated as he opened the door to his old Cadiallac La Salle. Then, he stood there staring hard at Mr. Ambrose.

“Do you want a radio station?”

“What?”

“You heard me!” The old man threw his brief case on the hood of the Caddy and fumbled with another combo lock.

“Get over here! Ready?………..5……..8……9………3.”

The Old man began singing papers as fast as he could.

“Here! Sign here, and, here! Good! It’s all yours. Whatever you do, don’t sell it to anyone, no matter the price! The future of the world depends on it. Do you know your Bible?”

“Never read it!”

“Are you kidding me! How old are you?”

“Sixty-five!”

“Well, lucky you. Much has been altered. Let me write down the combo to Herbert’s safe. He’s got some old Bible’s in there. Read all of Luke! Promise me!”

“I promise!”

“That’s them! Got to go!”

John watched the old man fumble with his keys. Behind the wheel, he gunned it. Mr. Ambrose felt a sting on his cheek. A piece of gravel………had drawn blood.

To be continued!

Radio Caroline North”, “Radio 270”, “Radio Scotland”, “Radio 390” and “Wonderful Radio London” broadcasts that are most interesting because they represented the US interests in developing Europe as a single entity. The French under de Gaulle advanced the idea of a United States of Europe” having similar powers to the United States of America, while the USA and the UK advanced the idea of a United Europe as a single trading block that would be tied to the USA. Armstrong’s broadcasts and supporting literature had a history dating back to pre-WWII in which he warned that a United States of Europe would eventually defeat both the UK and USA with a person similar to Adolph Hitler as its leader. This is thoroughly documented in both the recordings of his broadcasts and his literature. In fact before WWII ended Armstrong thought that the USA would lose and when it actually won, he immediately began predicting that a USE would arise from the ashes and try again. His dire warnings predate even the earliest of the Benelux agreements for trade in iron, steel and coal.

Its headquarters was in RosslynVirginia 38.8959°N 77.0727°W, later Reston, Virginia 38.955°N 77.359°W, and it maintained approximately 20 monitoring stations worldwide. In November 2005, it was announced that FBIS would become the newly formed Open Source Center, tasked with the collection and analysis of freely available intelligence.[1]

History[edit]

On 26 February 1941, President Roosevelt directed that $150,000 be allocated for creation of the Foreign Broadcast Monitoring Service (FBMS) under the authority of the Federal Communications Commission. The mandate of the FBMS was to record, translate, transcribe and analyze shortwave propaganda radio programs that were being beamed at the United States by the Axis powers.[1] Its first monitoring station was established in October 1941 in Portland, Oregon.

Foreign Broadcast Intelligence Service[edit]

The year following the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, the system gained importance and changed its name to The Foreign Broadcast Intelligence Service.[2]

At four different listening centers it recorded short-wave broadcasts on plastic disks. Selected material was transcribed and translated and then sent to War agencies with weekly reports. These special reports included special titles such as Radio Tokyo’s Racial Propaganda to the United States, Underground Movements and Morale in Japan, and New Nazi Portrait of the American Soldier.[2] Monitored stations included official stations in many countries, and “black” stations that weren’t what they pretended be. These black stations broadcast attacks on President Franklin D. Roosevelt while pretending to be stations in the American Midwest. This tactic was used to stir up race tensions and other issues.[2]

Multiple speeches and recording were monitored including speeches by Adolf HitlerJoseph GoebbelsJoachim von RibbentropBenito MussoliniPhilippe PétainPierre Laval, and others; broadcasts over German radio by American citizens, including Fred W. KaltenbachDouglas Chandler, and Edward Leo Delaney; and broadcasts from Japan or Japanese-held territory, including news reports and commentary by “Tokyo Rose.”[1] The FBIS kept track of a total of sixty “black” stations, which included a German-language station that pretended to represent an anti-Nazi army group, an anti-Nazi “Catholic” station, and an English-language station that attacked Winston Churchill.[2]

FBIS[edit]

With the end of World War II, the service was transferred to the Department of the Army. Like many other wartime organizations, the service was threatened with disbandment. The possibility of its disbandment was roundly criticized in many different quarters, which helped ensure its survival.

Upon the passing of the National Security Act of 1947, the service was renamed the Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS) as a part of the CIA. Its original mission revolved around radio and press agency monitoring.

In response to the Cuban Missile Crisis and START Treaty, FBIS was tasked with monitoring for clandestine and encoded messages from all nations and coordinating broadcast media contact points who could instantly broadcast urgent messages on “All Channels” and “All Calls”.

In 1967, the Service’s mission was expanded to cover foreign mass media transmitted by radio, television, and print.

In 2007, Readex announced its plans to create a digital edition entitled Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS) Daily Reports, 1941–1996. As of March 2017, this collection is available online via a paid subscription to Readex, as are Daily Report Annexes for 1974–1996.

A United Europe and Radio Swan

Posted on July 27, 2019 by Royal Rosamond Press

Here is the dreaded One World that evangelical hysterics predict will come and be the base for the Antichrist. Radio Swan was sponsored by Herbert Armstrong and was involved in the Bay of Pigs invasion. It broadcast to Latino people. This is huge! Springfield threw away this history, and would never have heard of it if it were not for me and my newspaper that the friends of Councilperson Emily Semple – attacked and tried to destroy! Members of Nightingale Services – are guilty of SLANDER – and violating my Civil Rights!

Semple ran for, and was crowned Eugene’s Slug Queen. Like POTUS, she has a nutty past. I believe ancient Nazarite energy made that astroid change course. We are all lucky to be alive! Let’s stop insulting one another, and – REJOICE!

For thousand of years White and Jewish Folks have been deeply into Biblical Lore and Prophecy. It’s what we do. It is a big part of our culture, to the chagrin of the Eugene Wiccans like Semple, Valkyrie, and Burch who have employed radical attorneys and the homeless to turn Downtown into their tailormade Eutopia. Social Engineering is employed like the Nazis employed.it. Latino groups have got involved in the Musical Chairs  Keep Away Hijinks that drove millions into the arms of Donald Trump.

Jews and Caucasians are a Prophetic People, verses a Festive and Fiesta People who celebrate Saints and their festive days in the town square. We like to see the visions of our prophets – come true! This is not Manifest Destiny! It is our – RELIGION!

Did Cesar Chavez, or any Latino group, offer to feed the hungry young people in the Height? How about the Black Panthers? Belle Burch and Alley Valkyrie read this blog and knew I was one of the original Hippies. They slimed me, made me out to be a pervert and stalker because there was a donor offering $400,000 dollars to a homeless group. We Hippies were a festive people who loved to dance to guitars and drums in the town square – and grow gardens. The cops brutalized us! Where was Huey Newton and Chavez?

I never saw any Latinos join the drum circle. They tend to stick to their own – tribe! My gangster father smuggled a Mexican woman across the border in a marijuana shipment and built a house in back his for her seven children to come live in, but, he died before he made’ Connie and the Kids’ dream come true. I must have a hundred kinfolk caught up in Trump-Messiah’s Dream Wall, and are now part of Armstrong’s Pirate Radio Ship prophecy, with Ed Ray’s name change of their famous kin, Senator Thomas Hart Benton throw in for good measure!

Like Vinnie the Chin, Captain Vic was always in his bathrobe. He sang all the time. He was in the Barber Shop Quartet and lived in downtown Oakland for a number of years. He and Donald are like twins. The Nation ended up having to endure my crazy-ass father who grandfather came from Bohemia, where some of the President’s kids come from genetically. He wanted me to teach him how to play the guitar so he could serenade Connie as she stood on the balcony he had made for her. I made the shudders, and the planter. Being the family hippie, it was my job to put flowers in the new planter.

Play all videos at the same time to get a glimpse of the chaos – still to come! I just heard from the Koo-Koo Kesey Downtown Voo-Doo Klan – and they claim it was they who moved that astroid off course with their Golden Grow Love! They want a hundred pieces of gold put in the hollow of an oak tree next to the rose garden.

Today, after Zane Kesey questioned the accuracy of the video I posted on his Facebook, I returned to 1795 Columbia Street in Eugene where his father lived, in order to find the man the Mailman told me about back in March of 2014. To my dismay, the Kesey cottage was torn down and turned into the Wasteland that the renowned Scholar, Elzbieta Oleksy, referred to when she called Cuckoo’s Nest a modern grail legend.

http://www.kval.com/news/local/Idea-Move-Columbia-Terrace-cottages-before-UO-builds-new-kitchen-251609051.html?tab=video&c=y

I walked up to the door of this house, saw it was ajar, and gave a shout-out. I did not want to bother the cats, and turned to walk away. Michael Powell came out and greeted me. I turned to behold another Grail Knight at the end of the Quest into the Wasteland. He would soon tell me he can’t get any respect, and to be on this quest, would hurt me. We were in our bloody armor doing Rodney Dangerfield – and having a great laugh!

“Do you want to come in or sit on the porch?” Michael asked, after hearing why I was here.

“The porch. I want to look at this rusty old chair while we talk.”

Michael came out with a book about Ken Kesey, that may not be in the Kesey mural, and opened it to the page that says Ken lived at “1795 Columbia” that was torn down six months ago. We both tried to save it. In an article that appeared in the Weekly (1-23-14) Michael says if we were in England that cottage would get a blue plaque. He also said Ken asked that the Armory be saved. It was torn down. After seeing this article, I sent Jon Riuz a e-mail where I talked about my idea for those cottages. His response;

“Interesting.”

I posted my plan on Kitty Piercy’s Faceboke, then went to the Eugene Historic Revue Board, and was shocked the man who was in charge of preserving structures as historic sights, was not working anymore. Nor was he fired. He was in limbo because of funding.

“I’ll do his job – for free! Who can I see about doing that?”

I was given two numbers, and no one called me back. I then called the UofO. A young woman could not grasp what I was asking her. She said there was a Kesey archive. I had another project going, and talked to the President of Windemere. Then, it was First Friday Artwalk. I thought I would go look for a helper after one guy did not show for a lunch. I see musicians playing in Ken Kesey Square. A young woman takes my phone number. We meet for two hours, then, after she sends me her poem for my critique, I am getting death threats from homeless anarchists who are trying to take over Ken Kesey Square. What did I say! This is what Michael was talking about. The rabble will drag you off your horse and open you like a can of tuna.

“I can’t get any respect!” Says this former teacher at the UofO.

I have avoided going downtown for eighteen months. If the Keseny mural was unveiled there, I would not have gone, and would not have met Nancy, who would not have told me Erin Sullivan was one of the artists who painted the Creamery Mural, that Erin supplied the lost image of.  CONNECTIONS! SYNCHRONICITY! Hold on to your hats, folks, for the Cosmic coincidences are really going to blow.

“You’re getting it from the source.” Michael says as he shows me a quote for Ken saying he lived at 1795 Columbia.

All of a sudden my Cosmic Trigger goes off!”

“Oh. that’s it. The Horses Mouth. That was the movie going on with the Kesey mural un-veiling. Have you seen the movie with Alec Guiness?”

“My friend just recommended that movie to me – yesterday!”

My reader now has a choice of sound tracks for what you are going to read next. Here is the music used for the soundtrack of The Horses’ Mouth’.

Here is the ending of the movie The Da Vinci Code. Note the book that Langston opens ‘The Divine Feminine’ On the cover is Botticelli’s Venus, who I compared to my hostile Muse, Belle Erin Berch, with, the song St. Stephen’s Rose being sung in the background. Here is the album cover. The Sleeping Beauty in the Louvre MUSEum, is called Rozmund. What name do you hear?

grateful-dead_300_300

Michael rises from the bench to go get what he considers to be a Literary Grail. He shows me Ken Kesey’s short story ‘Sunset at Celilo’. He reads the words Ken wrote and tells me he believes this story was the harbinger of ‘One Flew Over The Cuckoos’ Nest’. Most of the people surrounding Belle in Ken Kesey Square are mentally ill, Many of them have been institutionalized. This Bohemian scene was their break-out moment.

Michael’s cat ‘Smoky’ fell in love with me and wants me back for another visit.

“He doesn’t take to strangers. Must be something you got going he likes.”

When I got home and looked at FB, Stephanie Kesey had written;

“Faye showed me this place. It is the first place that they lived together.”

blue plaque is a permanent sign installed in a public place in the United Kingdom and elsewhere to commemorate a link between that location and a famous person or event, serving as a historical marker.

The world’s first blue plaques were erected in London in the 19th century to mark the homes and workplaces of famous people.[1] This scheme continues to the present day, having been administered successively by the Society of Arts (1867–1901), the London County Council (1901–1965), the Greater London Council (1965–1986), and English Heritage (1986 to date).

Here was the idea I presented to several people that are running Eugene.

I was twelve when I came upon the Woodminster amphitheatre. I was put in a trance by what I beheld. I sensed I had entered the real world, the one I belonged in. Juanita Miller was the visionary for this outdoor theatre where plays inspired by her father were performed. Redwoods were planted around Woodminster. George Miller planted many trees in his visionary city, Fairmount. Nearby, my great grandfathers had picnics. Note the rifle hanging in the tree. The Stuttmeister farm lie just below this

structure that is right out of Lord of the Rings.

Yesterday I presented to Mayor Kitty Piercy my idea for the New Eugene Celebration that would be centered around the Cuthbert Amphitheater and the Mill Race that I see as flowing from the Woodminster Amphitheater Cascade. I see O Lake as a reflecting pond. I see a Japanese arch at the end of a pier where is docked a Japanese boat. Up the hill is a Zen Garden and the cottages rescued from Columbia Terrace located in the lost city of Fairmont platted by George Melvin Miller, the brother of Joaquin.

There is a Writer’s Grove planted next to the cascade. I see a similar grove planted near the Cuthbert. Where will sit the two Craftsman housed rescued from Columbia Terrace. Once house will be a Miller Brother’s Museum, and the other a Museum of Bohemian Art and Literature. Ken Kesey lived in one of the barracks that was moved from Fort White. I see a Museum to Peace, with Kesey and Hippie memorabilia. Our Mayor should contact officials I Japan to see if they see these barracks that once housed soldiers destined to go to war with Japan, of historic significance.

The Calm Waters of Peace, Poetry, and Art, flow underground all the way from Oakland California, and surface in a New Arcadia in Eugene. From brother to brother. let there be a New Cultural Unity!.

EUGENE, Ore. – Things may be coming full circle for a cluster of cottages at the University of Oregon.

The buildings – believed to have once been home to soldiers during World War II – are in the running to once again house those who served our country.

The 15 structures on Columbia Street between 17th and 19th avenues need to go to make room for the university’s new central kitchen. Twelve of the buildings made up the housing complex known as Columbia Terrace.

According to an article written by George Kramer in the Oregon Encylopedia, the cottages were moved to their current location after they provided shelter for soldiers at Camp White during World War II.  The University of Oregon bought the land 40 years ago and turned the cottages into student housing.

Students vacated the cottages last summer in anticipation of the new development.

The $8.5 million new central kitchen will replace two smaller ones currently located in Bean and Carson halls. Those two kitchens provide over 10,000 meals a day. A wood shop will also occupy the site.

The original plan was to demolish the houses, but the university is now considering alternatives.

“You know we’re very much into sustainability and recycling so if the houses can be moved in whole that would be terrific,” said Michael Griffel, Director of Housing at UO. “There’s been interest expressed by a number of parties for those properties.”

Eugene City Manager Jon Ruiz is one of the people who Griffel says asked him about the structures.  A spokesperson for the city said Ruiz would like to see the buildings repurposed as veterans housing.
Other private citizens have also expressed interested in renovating and restoring the structures for use as veterans housing, including members of the Eugene Historical Review Board.

“We are hoping very much that the properties can be reused,” Griffel said, but they won’t know for sure if the buildings can be salvaged and relocated until construction starts.  “Like many intensive projects, until they actually get into it and have engineers try to move them, they aren’t going to know for sure how they’ll tolerate it.”

The overseas broadcasts seemed to follow the strange establishment of CIA client stations such as “Radio Swan” (later called “Radio Americas”) which played a key role in the Bay of Pigs invasion. This station has a well documented history tied to the CIA. The same is true of stations like “Radio Tangier International” in Africa, and his Russian language broadcasts from “Radio Monte Carlo”.

C.I.A. threat assessment file

Yet it is the “Radio Luxembourg” and “Radio Caroline North”, “Radio 270”, “Radio Scotland”, “Radio 390” and “Wonderful Radio London” broadcasts that are most interesting because they represented the US interests in developing Europe as a single entity.

Radio Swan was a pirate radio station based in the Swan Islands, a group of islands in the western Caribbean Sea, near the coastline of Honduras. Under the “Radio Swan” and “Radio Americas” names, the station was in operation from 1960 to 1968.

Contents

History[edit]

In 1960, a Central Intelligence Agency cover,[1] the Gibraltar Steamship Company (which didn’t own any steamships and whose president was Thomas Dudley Cabot)[2][3] owned and established Radio Swan on Swan Island, a covert black operation[2] to win supporters for U.S. policies and discredit Fidel Castro.

The radio station began acting as a regular commercial broadcaster with sponsors such as KleenexPhillip Morris Co., and others lined up,[2] operating with a 50,000 watt transmitter[1] on AM 1165 (early 1960s) and 1160 and on shortwave with a power of 7,500 watts on 6000 kHz. The importance of this island was in its location and proximity to the island of Cuba, because on March 17, 1960, U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower had approved covert action to topple the regime of Fidel Castro in Cuba. As early as October 30, 1960, the Castro government sent reconnaissance flights over Swan Island and the Caribbean Coast of Guatemala (CIA 11-3-1960).

Swan Island was claimed by the governments of both the United States and Honduras, although the island was in the de facto hands of personnel acting on behalf of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). A Mr. Sumner Smith of Boston also claimed ownership. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) claimed that it had no jurisdiction over the station.

The AM transmitter in use by Radio Swan had been used by Radio Free Europe and it was taken to Swan Island by US Navy Seabees on two LSTs. At first all broadcasts of this pseudo-commercial radio station were in the Spanish language and it was announced on air as Radio Swan, la Voz Internacional del Caribe, with its initial commercial programming coming on tape recordings from anti-Castro political groups in exile.

Cuba responded to the broadcasts by setting up a jamming station to block the transmissions of Radio Swan and initiated La Voz de INRA, or The Voice of INRA which represented the National Institute of Agrarian Reform with an anti-American message. This action was followed on January 3, 1961, by a break in diplomatic relations between both countries that had been initiated by the US. Following this action, Cuba commenced broadcasting to the US and to the world, with a new international service called Radio Havana Cuba.

In March 1961 Radio Swan announced that it would no longer sell its airtime for political programming and the station changed to an all-news format while infusing its broadcasts with coded messages. The station described itself as assisting those who are fighting Castro within Cuba and it began transmitting on fourteen frequencies. The CIA issued a press release claiming its anti-Castro broadcasts were now being beamed by seven radio stations as well as Radio Swan.

A station identifying itself as Radio Swan briefly resumed broadcasts in 1975-1976 on 6185 kHz. The station used a mailing address in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, and referred to itself as “La Primera Voz Democratica de Latinoamerica” (“The First Voice of Democracy in Latin America”). Since San Pedro Sula is located on the Honduran mainland, it is possible that these broadcasts originated there rather than on Swan Island, though no positive verification has been determined.

Bay of Pigs invasion broadcasts[edit]

During the Bay of Pigs Invasion of Cuba, which took place between April 15–19, 1961, it became obvious to all concerned that the purpose of the station was to assist in the landings. But following the abortive invasion, Radio Swan suddenly changed format again. While its tone remained anti-Castro its programming did not promote an uprising against the Cuban government. Then, the station changed its format and name. Vanguard Service Corporation became new owners of the station. Radio Swan became Radio Americas and it remained on the air until May 1968 when the station closed down and its AM transmitter was transported to South Vietnam to assist in the wars of South-East Asia.

The World Tomorrow radio program[edit]

One of the loyal sponsors who advertised on both Radio Swan and Radio Americas was Herbert W. Armstrong with The World Tomorrow radio program. In the January edition of his magazine The Plain Truth, a letter to the editor praised Armstrong by claiming that “… you could not have chosen a better station than Radio SWAN for reaching the Caribbean area. … It is becoming popular with all those who share in the dislike of Fidel Castro and his communistic dictatorship. – Lady, Costa Rica.

In the same edition, his Radio Log listed his ‘The World Tomorrow’ program as being broadcast by Radio Swan in the English language at 6 p.m. on Sundays and at 9 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. This listing remained unchanged through the edition of January 1962. The February 1962 edition of his Radio Log listed the English-language broadcast at 6:30 p.m. on Sundays over Radio Americas, but on the same frequency as Radio Swan, while the Spanish-language broadcast was listed at the same times as before, but over Radio Swan. In the March edition, the Spanish-language broadcast was also listed as being heard over Radio Americas.

The World Tomorrow broadcast was also carried on several other radio stations around the world which also appeared to have a proprietary connection to the CIA.

In April 1966, The New York Times ran a series of five articles on the purposes and methods of the CIA.[15][16][17][18][19]

The third of these 1966 articles began to detail false-front organizations and the secret transfer of CIA funds to, for example, the US State Department or to the United States Information Agency (USIA) which “may help finance a scholarly inquiry and publication,https://www.nytimes.com/svc/oembed/html/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nytimes.com%2F2019%2F07%2F23%2Fworld%2Feurope%2Ftrump-boris-johnson.html

Zane Kesey and the bus Further showed up at Ken Kesey Square today. Putting in an appearance was first discussed on Zane’s Facebook last week due to the notion a developer wanted to buy The Square, evict the statues of Ken, and build a high-rise. I posted my efforts to save the cottage Ken lived in when he went to the University of Oregon, The Augurs Test of the Kesey Mural, and my finding of The Lost Creamery Mural.

Tomorrow night Cozmic Pizza will be celebrating the 50th. Aniversary of the Acid Tests Kesey conducted. In 1966 Kesey helped put on a show at the Open Theater in Berkeley where was founded, BEAF – Berkeley for the Experimental Arts Foundation. My friend Peter Shapiro played here with The Loading Zone, and weeks later at the Acid Test held at Longshoreman’s Hall.

Thursday January 27, 1966
Ramon Charles McDarmaid and Don Buchla, Movies by Bruce Baille
Don Buchla had constructed the Thunder Machine for Ken Kesey’s Pranksters, a sort of electronic percussion device.

Ramon Sender co-produced the Trips Festival with Ken Kesey and Stewart Brand. It was a three-day event that, in conjunction with The Merry Pranksters, brought together the nascent hippie movement for the first time.[citation needed] The Trips Festival was held at the Longshoreman’s Hall in San Francisco in January 1966.[2] Counterculture sound engineer Ken Babbs is mostly credited for the sound systems he created for the Trips Festival. Prior to Babbs’ creation, it was discovered that particular music usually sounded distorted when cranked to high levels because of the cement floor on the San Francisco Longshoreman’s Union Hall (where the Trips Festival was taking place). Babbs being a sound engineer resolved the problem. He made sound amplifiers that would not create distorted sounds when turned up to high sound levels.[citation needed]

Organized by Stewart BrandKen KeseyOwsley Stanley, Zach Stewart and others. Ten thousand people attended this sold-out event, with a thousand more turned away each night.[3] On Saturday January 22, the Grateful Dead and Big Brother and the Holding Company came on stage, and 6,000 people arrived to imbibe punch spiked with LSD and to witness one of the first fully developed light shows of the era.[4]

The Marbles were a psychedelic and rock group whose second most notable performances was at the Trips Festival on January 21, 22 and 23 along with Jefferson AirplaneThe Charlatans and The Great Society. Both Shapiro and Dowler went on to become members of Paul Fauerso’s The Loading Zone.[5][6] The Loading Zone‘s first major concert was the Trips Festival at the Longshoreman’s Hall in January 1966.[2] Big Brother and the Holding Company was formed at their first gig, the Trips Festival. In the audience was painter and jazz drummer David Getz, who soon joined the band.[7][8][9]

“I also borrowed a white noise machine, which was supposed to help you meditate and get into other brain wave patterns. We also had taped layers of music, playing simultaneously, and added voice readings from the Book of Revelations from the Bible. It was a multimedia event. We called it “Revelations.”

The Open Theater in Berkeley is most famous for debuting Big Brother and The Holding Company, and for being one of the incubators of the Trips Festival, which we have covered elsewhere. Indeed, another blogger discovered a listing in the Oakland Tribune Theater section that listed one of (if not the) first advertisements for “Psychedelic Music” at the Open Theater. Following the lead of this blogger, I reviewed the Theater Sections of The Oakland Tribune for 1965 and 1966, and managed to piece together the brief, but interesting history of the organization. I apologize in advance for any serious Theater scholars who have stumbled across this, as my focus is more on the musical side of the venture.

The Oakland Tribune first mentions the Open Theater on July 21, 1965. Founders Ben and Rain Jacopetti had formed a group called the Berkeley Experimental Arts Foundation “for the presentation and study of new art forms and trends”. After opening on September 30, 1965, the Open Theater began presenting shows every weekend, and sometimes on weekdays as well. The first listing above (under the heading Little Theaters, from the Sunday, November 7, 1965 Tribune) was typical of their Fall 1965 offerings. There was new theater on Fridays and Saturdays, and on Sunday they had “Sunday Meeting,” a spontaneous meeting. Sometimes music was advertised, as presented by either Ian Underwood or The Jazz Mice, Underwood’s trio.

It was the Sunday Happenings that seemed to be one of the precursors to The Trips Festival. According to Charles Perry’s 1984 book Haight Ashbury: A History, there was apparently multi-media performances, with lights and nudity (too much nudity for San Francisco’s Broadway), music by Underwood and others, an Art Gallery featuring contemporary art, and so on. The bass player for the Jazz Mice was artist Tom Glass, known also as Ned Lamont, and a painting of a huge comic book-style painting of his graced the lobby.

In January, the open theater begins to shift somewhat more towards music. The second (split-up) entry is from the Sunday, January 9, 1966 edition of Oakland Tribune. The Sunday night happening is followed by an apparently musical performance by Day Wellington and The Poor Losers. The next weekend is January 14 and 15, when The Loading Zone and Big Brother make their debuts, in evenings of “rock and roll and theatrical improvisation”.

The weekend of January 21-22-23 was the Trips Festival, in which the Open Theater participated. They surely contributed some multi-media, and Ian Underwood’s Jazz Mice played the first night. On the Saturday night (January 22), Underwood and others presented an avant garde musical performance. The last day of the Trips Festival, however, the Open Theater has its Sunday Meeting as usual, although perhaps some of the regular participants may have been a little worse for wear.

The last clipping is from the Sunday January 23 edition of the Tribune, noting the Happening, and also upcoming musical events. They are

Don Buchla had constructed the Thunder Machine for Ken Kesey’s Pranksters, a sort of electronic percussion device.

Congress of Wonders were a comedy trio, also regulars at the Open Theater, who did hip comedy and performance art (they later released a few albums). Ned’s Mob are unknown to me.

Rock and Roll dance featuring The Loading Zone
This would have been The Loading Zone’s third performance, to our knowledge, the first two having been two weeks earlier at the Open Theater (Jan 14) and then at the Trips Festival (either Jan 21 or 22). The Loading Zone was based in Oakland.

Work on the Ken Kesey mural in downtown Springfield came to a sudden halt while I registered the auspices of this grand undertaking. As Master Augur of the West Coast, I felt it was my civic duty to put Ken’s mural to the Augur’s Acid Test. I am happy to report this fine work of art passed with flying colors.

Jon ‘The Augur’

Today, after Zane Kesey questioned the accuracy of the video I posted on his Facebook, I returned to 1795 Columbia Street in Eugene where his father lived, in order to find the man the Mailman told me about back in March of 2014. To my dismay, the Kesey cottage was torn down and turned into the Wasteland that the renowned Scholar, Elzbieta Oleksy, referred to when she called Cuckoo’s Nest a modern grail legend.

The removal of his father’s statue would have happened if it were not for a Persian carpet vendor. Kitty Piercy had to know about the pending sale. Our mayor paid special attention to Ally Valkyrie and other SLEEPS trespassers. https://rosamondpress.com/2015/07/08/beaf-2/Reply
