Republicans have dismissed any connection between their rhetoric and the attack. Instead, they’ve blamed Democratic policies on crime and suggested that growing political violence may be the result of general anxiety around election legitimacy. Elon Musk, the billionaire Tesla CEO who was cheered by Republicans when he bought Twitter last week, has advanced a right-wing anti-LGBTQ conspiracy theory around the circumstances of the attack. Though he deleted his post, it remained on Twitter long enough to be amplified and repeated by many on the right.
Even before Pelosi became speaker, Republicans in the party and those adjacent to it have demonized her regularly, featuring her in attack ads and lambasting her on Fox News. At least one of her colleagues in the House, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), has directly indicated support for violence against her. And members of right-wing militia groups such as the Oath Keepers and the Three Percenters have sought her assassination.

Pelosi Attacker Allegedly Planned to Kidnap and Torture Speaker: Updates

The violent attack on Nancy Pelosi’s husband last week might have been a lot worse. Federal prosecutors charged a California man with attempting to kidnap the Speaker of the House when he allegedly broke into her San Francisco home with zip ties, looking for her. That man is also facing a charge of assault stemming from his attack on the Speaker’s husband, Paul Pelosi, which sent him to the hospital with a skull fracture. The suspect allegedly planned to torture the House Speaker, calling her the “leader of the pack,” in apparent reference to far-right conspiracy theories about Democrats that he subscribed to. The authorities are explicitly calling the incident a politically motivated attack.

Here’s what is known so far about the developing story.
The Attack
Nancy Pelosi, who has represented San Francisco in Congress since 1987, was in Washington, D.C., on business when, in the early-morning hours of Friday, an intruder named David DePape entered her home, looking for her.

Paul Pelosi, her husband of 59 years, was asleep in his bedroom when the intruder woke him up, saying he wanted to talk to Nancy, according to a criminal complaint filed in federal court on Monday. (Reports quoted him as saying “where’s Nancy?”) When Pelosi told the assailant that his wife wasn’t home, the assailant said he would wait and produced zip ties from his pockets. Pelosi was able to make his way to a bathroom where he secretly dialed 911.
On the call, Pelosi “stated words to the effect of there is a male in the home and that the male is going to wait for Pelosi’s wife. Pelosi further conveyed that he does not know who the male is,” according to court documents.
The 911 dispatcher sent police there to perform a well-being check on Pelosi at approximately 2:27 a.m. When officers arrived, they found the assailant struggling with Pelosi over a hammer. The officers told them to drop the hammer and then the assailant struck Pelosi in the head, knocking him unconscious. The officers then tackled the assailant and took him into custody. After rendering aid to Pelosi, he was interviewed inside an ambulance and transported to an area hospital for further treatment.
Pelosi, 82, sustained what were described in a statement by the Speaker’s office as “serious injuries” to his right arm and hands, as well as a skull fracture that required surgery. On Saturday, Speaker Pelosi said in a letter to House members that “our children, our grandchildren and I are heartbroken and traumatized by the life-threatening attack,” but that her husband’s condition “continues to improve.”
Police body camera footage showed a glass door that was “broken near the handle,” according to the criminal complaint, showing how the assailant broke in. During a search of the home, police found zip ties in a hallway of the house and in Pelosi’s bedroom.
What We Know About the Suspect and His Motive
The assailant, David DePape, 42, is facing a variety of charges stemming from the attack. On Monday, California authorities announced they were filing charges of attempted murder, burglary, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, and additional felonies against DePape. The same day, federal prosecutors charged him with one count of assault on an immediate family member of a United States official and one count of attempted kidnapping of a U.S. official.
During an interview with authorities, DePape allegedly told officers that he intended to hold Speaker Pelosi hostage and talk to her. He was quoted as saying that if Pelosi told the “truth,” he would let her go, but if she lied, he would’ve broken her kneecaps.
“In the course of the interview, DePape articulated he viewed Nancy as the ‘leader of the pack’ of lies told by the Democratic Party. DePape also later explained that by breaking Nancy’s kneecaps, she would then have to be wheeled into Congress, which would show other Members of Congress there were consequences to actions,” according to the federal criminal complaint.

In addition to the zip ties discovered in the home, officers searched DePape’s backpack left by the broken door and found “roll of tape, white rope, one hammer, one pair of rubber and cloth gloves, and a journal.”
When announcing the state’s charges against DePape, Brooke Jenkins, the San Francisco district attorney, called the attack “politically motivated.”
DePape’s mental state became a subject of focus and speculation immediately following the attack. Jenkins declined to comment on his mental health on Sunday, only saying he is being held in a secure ward of San Francisco General Hospital before his arraignment.
He grew up in British Columbia, the San Francisco Chronicle reports, but eventually became estranged from his family after moving to the U.S. At one point, after he moved to San Francisco, he was a hemp-jewelry maker and got involved in pro-nudism activism, appearing at a 2013 nudist wedding at city hall. CNN reports he struggled with drug use, and had at one point lived in a storage shed. (Over the past two years, he’d been living in a Bay Area garage where authorities recovered two hammers, a sword, and a pair of rubber and cloth gloves.) Linda Schneider, a former acquaintance, said she once received “really disturbing” emails from him, describing his tone as “megalomaniac and so out of touch with reality.” His adult stepdaughter said in a blog post on Friday that he had inflicted “extreme abuse” on her and her brothers.
At one point, he was a registered member of the Green Party, but it appears that his views eventually shifted to the far right of the political spectrum. DePape’s blogs and social-media activity include posts related to QAnon, lies by MyPillow founder Mike Lindell about the 2020 election being stolen, and shared content that alleged the pandemic was an attempt by global elites to bring about a new world order. There were also blog posts expressing bigotry toward women, Jews, people of color, Muslims, immigrants, and members of the LGBTQ community with graphic imagery.
Where Was Security?
The home was apparently not under guard at the time of the attack. Paul Pelosi does not receive protection from the U.S. Capitol Police when unaccompanied by the Speaker, according to the Washington Post, and Nancy Pelosi and her security detail were in D.C. at the time. Capitol Police said agents from its California field office “quickly arrived on scene” following the attack.
Concerns about security for members of Congress have significantly increased over the years, particularly in the wake of the siege on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, when lawmakers directly confronted threats of danger. There were 9,625 threats recorded against members of Congress last year, according to data from the Capitol Police, up sharply since 2017.
The Reaction So Far
Both Democratic and Republican political leaders have expressed support for the Pelosis following the attack. The White House said President Joe Biden called the Speaker to offer his support and said he’s “praying for Paul Pelosi and for Speaker Pelosi’s whole family.” Mitch McConnell, Chuck Schumer, and Kevin McCarthy all expressed solidarity with the Pelosi family.
But not everyone was so tactful. At a campaign event for a congressional candidate, Republican Virginia governor Glenn Youngkin said, “There’s no room for violence anywhere, but we’re gonna send her back to be with him in California.”

Who were the violent demonstrators who attacked downtown Seattle, toppled a police chief and wrecked the World Trade Organization conference?
The Seattle police thought they had the situation in hand. They spent months negotiating an agreement with the major protest groups, which they believed would lead to orderly demonstrations.
But one small band of demonstrators arrived with a different plan. When Seattle was standing on the brink, this group, which calls itself anarchist, gave it a shove.
The anarchists were a tiny fraction of the thousands who marched on Seattle. But they were a catalyst. Their hammers shattered any hope that the World Trade meeting could recover from a chaotic start.
The group, from Eugene, Ore., endorses violence against big business. Most members reside in a neighborhood known as Whiteacre and essentially live hand to mouth. They spoke to 60 Minutes II Correspondent Scott Pelley about what they sought to do in Seattle.
Trying to explain their motivation, one member of the group, Shelly (group members declined to give last names) says that it started with a “rage against the destruction of things that are most important and about the survival of the planet and us as a species and every other species on this planet that’s being decimated.”
The problem, says another, Scott, is that “that property has more value in our society than actual life.”
Although they did speak on camera, the four who spoke to Pelley would not, however, admit to having been in Seattle. “We want to pose a credible threat to the biggest, most powerful people in the world,” Shane says.
“And when that’s the kind of work you want to do, and you want to do it over your whole life, you want to be able to keep doing your work without quickly being apprehended and being sent away to jail for a long time,” Shane adds.
Explaining why the group smashed windows of various multinational consumer companies, Shane says the group was trying to make the world’s cities think twice about hosting such a conference: “[It’s] an economic incentive to not hold meetings like that at all…and psychological incentive to reconsider…the kind of society that we live in that fills our world with Starbucks and McDonalds.”
Although the group smashed windows, destroyed property and touched off a riot, its members are not clear about where they stand on violence. Some say they are a nonviolent group; others seem less certain.
I consider…private property to be a form of violence,” says Steven. “I consider the state to be a form of violence. I don’t think that destroying that which maintains violence to be violent.”
“We reject the law,” says Shelley. “The law was not decided by us. We are being governed by a system that we do not agree with and we completely reject. Therefore the law means nothing.”
This was not the first time the roup has been involved in a riot. On June 18, it staged an anti-technology bash that quickly ran amok.
That day, Thad Buchanan, police captain in Eugene, Ore., found himself battling the anarchists. “They began blocking intersections, surrounding cars, started picking up rocks and filling their pockets. At that point, it was very clear that we were in for a rough time,” he says.
Angry neighbors got rough with the anarchists. Tear gas flew and the melee rolled into a city park. Buchanan claims that the anarchists surrounded the police and began to throw rocks. The police had to retreat for a time. “They’re dangerous and violent criminals,” Buchanan says. “They terrorize innocent people.”
The anarchists don’t feel warmly toward the police. “Cops lie,” says Tim Ream, one of the Seattle anarchists. “It’s really unfortunate but it’s a normal way of doing business. In fact, police are trained to lie; they’re actually professional liars….And not only that, police are all about using force.”
Using six cameramen, Ream produced a documentary about the Seattle protest, which exposes the police violence that the news cameras never captured, he says.
“The first people targeted by police were the traditional nonviolent protestors who were locked down,” says Robin. “They were the first people to get pepper sprayed, they were the first people to get shot at with rubber bullets; they were the first people to get tear gassed. And the idea – that the police came in to stop people from breaking windows and that’s why they used force is – is not true.”
By definition, anarchists have no leaders; but many Eugene anarchists look to John Zerzan for guidance. He has written books that advocate the end of the industrial world. “We’re seeing the beginning of a new movement after decades of no social movements really.”
“There’s something fundamentally rotten,” he says. “The system has to go.” Zerzan advocates the end of industry and technology. Zerzan’s views are not far removed from those of Ted Kaczynski, the Unabomber. Zerzan believes the bombings were wrong but he endorses Kaczynski’s ideas. Zerzan corresponds “a bit” with the imprisoned murderer.
Many of the anarchists also feel a certain affinity for Kaczynski. “I think he wanted to point out that individuals were inherently responsible for things that were happening,” says one anarchist, Emma, speaking of the Unabomber.
“There are people out there that are just like everyone else who are making the decisions to clear cut old-growth forest and are making these decisions happily because their pockets are getting fatter and those people should be held responsible,” she says. “I don’t think that what he did was wrong.”
“You stare at the television, and you see logos, and you’re in a daze,” says Shelley. “And these symbols pop up everywhere in your life. When that is shattere, it breaks a spell. And we’re trying to get people to wake up before it’s too late.”

Belle, I am confused. You took my number when we met after I told you I am an author out to preserve the Beat-Bohemian-Hippie culture. Why then have you not talked about your radical homeless work with me when I shared at length my work with the homeless here in Springfield? From whom did you get an interest in Bohemians? I contacted Scott Perry of CBS News and asked him to cover the attack on my Civil Liberties and Freedom of the Press. On May 28, I will be attending the Eugene City Hall Meeting where I will submit my Harry Lane proposal that the Mayor of Springfield saw. I will also make a request that Councilperson, Emily Semple. got to the FBI and tell them all she knows about the threats of Alley Valkyries and her friends, and tell them about the donation of $400,000 dollars made by a anonymous person because she was angry with City Manager, John Ruiz. Emily and other members of SLEEPS invaded the office of John Ruiz and were arrested for trespassing. Semple want to be arrested, but there was only so much room at the jail. I have considered if the secret donor wanted me punished, or, if I had captured her in my video. I am going to demand the Mayor and City Council launch an investigation into these matters, for this appears to a case of Conspiracy. What did this donor want for his/her money? For sure she/he used the poor and homeless as pawns.

I was ordered to take down what I wrote about them on my newspaper-blog. I refused. I told them I owe it to my peers, and the homeless to not have to threats. These people are associated with the King of the Eugene anarchist that 60 Minute’s covered years ago. On May 28 I will be attending the Eugene City Hall meeting, and demand one of the Council members, help the FBI in their investigation. I was threatened with bodily hard if I got to meetings. Eugene Donor Commits $400,000 For New Shelter Site

As Eugene city leaders floundered last week in relocating the former residents of the Whoville homeless camp, an anonymous benefactor took up the issue, offering a $400,000 donation to establish a sanctuary on private property.
The pledge came as a direct response to, among general grievances, the unyielding position of City Manager Jon Ruiz and others willing to leave the destitute in limbo. “I wanted to step up,” the donor tells EW, “because I saw the city making an attempt to push these people out. They’re citizens, not strangers.”
A Eugene native with capital to spare from the success of a local family business, the donor says the wealth was a matter of pure chance, adding that a privileged position in society obligates one to prevent a human rights catastrophe when no one else will.
For the donation to be seen through, the money has to be channeled properly through the fiscal sponsorship of a nonprofit organization. This would be accomplished through an existing entity with 501(c)(3) status, such as Opportunity Village Eugene or Community Alliance of Lane County. An alternative could be for SLEEPS (Safe Legally Entitled Emergency Places to Sleep) or the Nightingale Public Advocacy Collective to attain such status — the latter is already pending.

The donor remains anonymous to keep the focus on the issue not the donor, and to avoid criticism from a business community where some might shame the donation: “Developers don’t want the parents of university students to see all these homeless people. Kevin Belle and the Gambit

Kevin was my neighbor for ten years. We lived next door to each other at the Stoner apartment building on 19th. Kevin would invite me to radical events. Here he is in a photo with Ambrose, Belle’s boyfriend. In the top photo we see Belle with Ambrose and his radical friends. When you go after someone you do not know, best see who his, or her, friends are.
Kevin and I had mutual friends going back to 1987. I lived in a quad and my neighbor was the King of the Punkers, many who were homeless. The young women would come knock on my door as I typed away, they wanting me to help them with their woes. I was forty-one. They called me Mr. Green Jeans. When my bank kicked them off the wall they sat on on 13th. I withdrew my money. I went to a late night punk concert, all the time attending Serenity Lane.
Kevin’s girlfriend, Serena, had been my good friend. We use to talk for hours at the café Romero. She was homeless half the time. She was a writer and a poet. She was a street waif and punker. When 60 Minutes did a segment on Eugene’s Anarchists, they wanted her on their show, because she was known as ‘The Queen of the Anarchist’. She lay low. Who was the King?
Kevin, Serena, and I had a mutual friend, Amily. She was my Muse that I saw in café Romero. She was crying. She had lived in a castle in France with her parents. She had a bullet in her leg. Her father was a drug smuggler. I would talk with Nancy about Amily, who had a daughter by the same name. Nancy was aware of my mission, to get sober, but continue to mingle with Bohemian types.
Amily and I worked on a poem together. It was about two people who spot each other through another dimension, like a knothole in a fence. They know each other from the past. They continue their game. Amily and Belle look alike. The poem is called ‘Gambit’. The final curtain has been raised. Now, my dear reader, you see the whole stage.
The word music comes from muse. An angel of music, would be a muse. I was Christine’s teacher whom she loved dearly. She painted for my approval. Belle was my protégé, and Heir. I do not make offers. I fulfill destinies.
When Belle and I met at the Wandering Goat, from the get she is lecturing me on the importance of genealogies. I am reminded of the Swan Knight who marries Elsa under the condition she never inquire about his ancestry. When she does, he disappears from her life. My ancestors were Swan Brethren in Holland. The muse and the artist move in other dimensions. The attack on artists and writers in Paris has rendered a great wound that the Swan Knight returns………..to repair!
Do not meddle in things you do not understand. Belle has the neck of a swan.

Eugene Donor Commits $400,000 For New Shelter Site

As Eugene city leaders floundered last week in relocating the former residents of the Whoville homeless camp, an anonymous benefactor took up the issue, offering a $400,000 donation to establish a sanctuary on private property.
The pledge came as a direct response to, among general grievances, the unyielding position of City Manager Jon Ruiz and others willing to leave the destitute in limbo. “I wanted to step up,” the donor tells EW, “because I saw the city making an attempt to push these people out. They’re citizens, not strangers.”
A Eugene native with capital to spare from the success of a local family business, the donor says the wealth was a matter of pure chance, adding that a privileged position in society obligates one to prevent a human rights catastrophe when no one else will.
For the donation to be seen through, the money has to be channeled properly through the fiscal sponsorship of a nonprofit organization. This would be accomplished through an existing entity with 501(c)(3) status, such as Opportunity Village Eugene or Community Alliance of Lane County. An alternative could be for SLEEPS (Safe Legally Entitled Emergency Places to Sleep) or the Nightingale Public Advocacy Collective to attain such status — the latter is already pending.

Yesterday my autistic friend told me her friend Ben had killed himself. Ben and Michelle were boyfriend and girlfriend over a year ago. M wanted to invite Ben over to our Sunday dinners because he is very reclusive. The four of us did our best to make Ben feel comfortable. It was like walking on a eggshells. These challenged people came with my homeless vet friend, Hollis Williams, who adopted many throw-away people. He was like a father to them. When Hollis died a year ago, I adopted H, and, his children as he called them.
M said Ben’s parents put him back in a foster home, because he needed human contact. He spent all day and night in his room on his computer. We suspect some guy in the foster house made fun of Ben.

At dinner I brought up the subject that Steve had violated M’s space with an improper touching game. Belle’s Pirate Poem

If you live in the West, then you want to be a Pirate, or, a Witch when you grow up. I became both at the age of twelve when I became an Artist and a Writer.
Here is Belle’s Pirate Poem. She was going to Lane College studying literature because she wants to be a Witch (Writer). Then, she met Ambrose, the wanna-be Pirate Captain. Together, with Alley Valkyrie, they shanghaied the Drug Cannibals that beat on drums in Wayne Morris Plaza on Saturday. These savages attracted young women who danced naked from the waist up. They now launched a Pirate Ship called ‘The Sleeping Dragon’ that did try to take ‘The Royal Rosamond’ as a prize. But, I repelled them. In a noble declaration, I became their competition. This is when they brought in their She-demons.
This is why I am forgiving of Belle, even why I will always love her. She sending me her REVEALING poem was the so naive. She then asks me how it makes me feel. You got to laugh! When you remove the hood-winking, Belle’s plan was an old and simple one. Found Never Never Land! Never grow up! And have the Squares foot the bill.
Here is what I told Belle in an e-mail I sent her
“The truth is, I did not like your poem, because I hate conspiracy radio. I want to do my own radio show called the Authentic Human Being Show. I did not like your poem because it says very little about YOU and your advocacy for the homeless. OCCUPY has a core group of people who want to remain anonymous. Like the Pied Piper I will, put forth a better idea!”

It is clear to any sane person I have integrity and severed my relationship with her because she is using money she collects for the poor – to party down! I was disgusted when I read this in Belle’s poem. All of a sudden the image of the Beautiful Homeless waif went – poof! In her place stood Bella Donna, Pirate Queen, laden with booty, and cruising the Caribbean for more treasure! I can not hate Belle after she was so foolish to send me this poem. She was doing great, having fun, concealing who she was, that she ran with a crew of cut-throats. She has food run across the street as she runs the table while downing another tankard of ale!
All the threats and slander, have come from Belle Burch. Because my late mother and sister were dragged into the Racketeering, and connected with the rape charges against UofO basketball, I have informed my attorney a suit might be called for to clear my good name and the name of my artistic family. I also talked to the FBI. I will call the IRS next.
Here is ‘The Family’ that was arrested together. The Family has not solved the homeless problem that has been around since the dawn of time. According to the History of the Rosemond Family by Leland Rosemond, the Rosamond family were members of the Orange Order in Leitrim Ireland, and fled to Canada after a Rosamond son killed a Catholic lad who was invading the Rosamond home with a gang bent on doing my kindred harm.
Bennett may have been a Freemason as well – and an Oddfellow. There is a long history of the Rosamonds belonging to Guilds. They were members of the Swan Brethren.
My grandparents, Royal and Mary Magdalene Rosamond, begat my mother, Rosemary Rosamond, and her sisters, Lilian, Bonnie, and June Rice.

When Belle and I met at the Wandering Goat, for some reason she is lecturing on the importance of one’s genealogy. I am amazed! She will not let me get a word in edgewise so I can tell her I am doing an astounding genealogy of my family, that tragically my daughter, Heather, could care less about. This has put me in a real crisis, for who will I leave the thousands of hours of research to? When Belle called me back after we met in Ken Kesey Square, I told her I was going to make her my Heir to my long study. Why Belle Burch?
On March 24, 2014, I made the following videos about the Sleeping Dream, and the Floral Fairmont Vision of George Miller, the brother of the Bohemian Pre-Raphaelite Poet of Oakland, where I was born. I go on a mystical journey into the Eugene Hills, and there I arrive at the center of Labyrinth, the very end and clue of the Rouge Thread. I knew then, as I stood there, I would soon find her, Sleeping Beauty. Here is one definition of FAIR:

Fair Rosamond means ‘Beautiful Rosamond’. Grimm names the Sleeping Beauty Princess, Rosamond. In this first video I am standing in front of Ken Kesey’s cottage that he lived in when he went to the University of Oregon. I was trying to get some people to help me save these cottages so they could be used for Homeless Veterans. I shared this on Kitty Piercy’s Facebook. Two people stood me up at a meeting. When I went to the First Friday Artwalk on April 4th. I was hoping to meet a helper. No sooner was I in Ken Kesey Square, I spotted her. When she told me her name was Belle, I could hardly speak. I was – amazed! She said;
“It means ‘Beautiful’ in French.”
