Turnverein Ark – El Arco California

The Book of Lazarus

On this day, June 20, 2026, at 3:57 PM…..I John Presco, have been instructed by God, to build a Secular Ark in Baja California, and fill it with all that has been rejected by the Israeli Zionist Jews of Netanyahu.

In the name of 9th grandfather, John Wilson, I reborn the Puritan Church in America. I recognize the Zionist seed in the LDS Church, and give it new ground – and a new direction. There will be Chosen People. There will be marriages between citizens of Izrael and America. May God’s Chosen Children, never perish from the Earth.

Wilson and Webb

My kindred, William Wilson, and his brother-in-law, Erasmus Webb may have known William Shakespeare – intimately! Anne (Webb) Wilson lived at Windsor Castle. Her brother, Erasmus, was the Archdeacon of Buckingham Palace. Are we looking at the authors of Shakespeare’s plays? Why has this family lineage been buried, and all but forgotten? These are extremely educated men, whose wives would be at court. They would know all the intrigues, and, hear confessions. They would know the merry wives of Windsor. People would bring them all the gossip that is the bane of the church, aimed at bringing other down as they vie for royal favors.

This bloodline flows from Bohemia and has seeded several major religions. This is the ‘Hidden Seed’. The Webb family came to America. In the chart below we see that Sir Alexander Webb married Mary Wilson, the daughter of Thomas Wilson MP, the grandfather (or Great Uncle?) of Reverend John Wilson of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, that the Webb family played a large role in. Shakespeare’s line, died out, and thus, this is his American Seed.

Statesman, Thomas Wilson MP, was a stellar scholar and author who could have prepared the way for the writing of Shakespeare. Why not put Alexander Webb is the race? Surely the Webb-Wilson family saw themselves as the family-power behind the Church and Throne, and in need of new forum.

“Wilson belongs to the second rank of Elizabethan statesmen. An able linguist, he had numerous acquaintances among Spanish and Flemish officials in the Netherlands, and, in a wider context, his range of friends included Leicester, Burghley, Hatton, Davison, Sir Francis Knollys, Paulet, Walsingham, William of Orange, Jewel, Parker, Parkhurst, Gresham, Ludovico Guiccardini and Arias Montano.”

Nationalism, one of the strongest forces at large in the world during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and often carrying racist overtones, caught Europe’s Jews in an ugly predicament. On the one hand they found themselves the victims of a new and particularly virulent brand of anti-semitism, while on the other hand they had no nation of their own to which they could turn for sanctuary. This dilemma, plus the growth of their own nationalistic sentiment, resulted during the late 1890s in the birth of the Zionist movement. The movement was aimed at colonizing Jews in their ancient homeland of Palestine, where it was hoped they would eventually constitute a majority and obtain the protection of public law and at least a measure of political autonomy. But there was a question in the minds of some Zionists as to whether or not this goal was feasible with regard to Palestine (then under Turkish rule), and a difference of opinion on this point led to a split in the movement and to the birth, in 1905, of the Territorialist faction. While the main body of Zionists insisted that only Palestine could provide a true Jewish homeland, the Territorialists argued that a more important and pressing consideration was that some suitable place in the world be found. According to Dr. Stern, though it has never appeared in Zionist histories, “Evidence now at hand indicates that the first area which the Territorialists considered was Baja California.”

Stern’s book actually treats several related but somewhat different topics. The first chapter, which covers a period from 1891 to 1905, deals primarily with the interest shown in Baja California by Alta California Jews, especially as an area for settling refugees of the Russlan pogroms. The second chapter, which is as long as the other two combined, is concerned mainly with the lives of three of northern Baja California’s early jewish settlers: Luis Mendelson, Maximiliano Bernstein, and David Goldbaum. Mendelson arrived on the Peninsula in 1871 and the other two men during the 1880s, but each of them came on an individual basis, for strictly personal reasons, and not as part of any organized movement. The third chapter focuses on the interest shown in Baja California by the leadership (in London) of the Territorialist organization, and which occurred in late 1905 or early 1906. Though the leadership’s decision was negative and their interest short-lived, the subject continued to excite a few Alta California Territorialists for some years afterward. The chapter then concludes with Baja California once again under consideration as an area for settling Jewish refugees—this time the German-jewish refugees of the 1930s. But since the idea was announced before first being discussed with Mexican authorities, the latter gave it a decidedly cold reception, one of them referring to it as a “fantastic dream.”

At times the book gives the impression that except for a mistaken assessment of its agricultural potentialities by certain Territor-ialist leaders (i.e., that it was too arid), Baja California might well have become a New World Israel. Stern quotes David Lubin, a Sacramento merchant: “Why could not some arrangements be made with the Mexican Government for the sale of Lower California, so as to form there an autonomous Jewish State under the joint protectorate of the United States and Mexico?” Although certain Jewish figures may have thought of this as a distinct possibility, is there any evidence that Mexico ever considered going along with the idea? The answer, I think, is a definite “no.” It is true that throughout his long tenure as Mexico’s president, Porfirio Díaz welcomed Jewish colonists (as he did colonists in general), making him in this respect almost unique among heads of government. However, there is no evidence to show that he entertained for one moment the notion of their obtaining political autonomy at his nation’s expense. Other considerations aside, Baja California bears too strategic a geographical relationship to the northwestern coast of the Mexican mainland for that country to have willingly agreed to its alienation. Surely little short of United States force could have wrenched it away; yet if this had occurred, can anyone seriously imagine that it would then have been turned over to the Territorialists?

A Santa Monica optometrist, Dr. Stern is the founder-editor of the Western States Jewish Historical Quarterly and has previously published, among other items, California Jewish History, A Descriptive Bibliography. His present book, though relatively short, not only contains a good deal of interesting information but it discloses a noteworthy and hitherto unrevealed facet of Baja California history. And like all the volumes in this series, it is handsomely printed and put together.

Dialogue and Dissonance

Why Being a Liberal Jew Feels So Lonely and Exhausting Right Now

And what do we do about it

Ilan Goldenberg

Jun 30, 2025

NOTE: I had this post scheduled to go out on the morning of June 13 and then the night before the war between Israel and Iran broke out and I pulled it down. I’ve made some small updates but the piece is evergreen and so I mostly kept things the same.

It feels incredibly lonely, exhausting, and overwhelming to be a liberal American Jew right now. This isn’t just how I feel, but what I’ve heard from so many friends and colleagues over the past few weeks. It’s obviously scary. The attacks on Governor Shapiro’s residence, the AJC event in Washington, and the march for the hostages in Boulder makes Jew fear for their safety. But it’s more than just that. It’s also because so many of the institutions that Jews have traditionally counted on as sources of strength and leadership in moments of crisis are not as reliable as they used to be and are sometimes a big part of the problem. That just makes everything exhausting and more confusing.

The Institutions that are Failing Us

Start with the U.S. government. In the past, the President’s role especially in moments of tragedy was to act as comforter in chief. And Jews could expect that the government would be pursuing good faith efforts to keep them safe without politics interfering. That is not what is happening with the Trump administration. There is of course the appropriate and necessary condemnation of antisemitism, but then almost immediately a pivot to attacks on immigrants and higher education in the name of fighting antisemitism. Attacks that most Jews oppose.

Just look at the two Congressional resolutions that passed in response to the recent spate of antisemitic attacks. There was thankfully a bipartisan resolution that passed with unanimous support condemning the attacks. But then we had a second resolution focused on the attacker’s immigration status and framed entirely as an anti-immigration resolution that thanked ICE. This even though ICE was not one of the agencies responding on the day of the shooting. It was the FBI and Colorado police, neither of whom received a specific word of thanks in the resolution. An initial draft of this second resolution even included a statement saying “Free Palestine” was an antisemitic phrase before that language was struck. At the end the resolution passed with unanimous Republican support and a split Democratic caucus. It would be helpful to be able to actually take a moment to process the grief and horror of what is happening without having to immediately jump into fighting against others using our community’s pain to pursue their own agenda.

The second major failure is from the Israeli government, which has in the past in moments of crisis been a beacon for Jews around the world, but is now basically the opposite. The worldview and policies being promoted by Itmar Ben Gvir, Belzal Smotrich, and Benjamin Netanyahu are anathema to most American Jews. The biggest problem at this point is of course perpetuating the war in Gaza and deplorable humanitarian conditions instead of taking a deal that ends the war in exchange for the hostages. Let’s be clear that Hamas started this war by committing the horrible atrocities of October 7th and has been an incredibly difficult negotiating partner ever since. But it is also clear that, at this point, Hamas’s demand that Israel end the war in exchange for the hostages is a concession that 70% of the Israeli public is willing to make. Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is speaking out stating that Israel is committing war crimes as former right wing Israeli Defense Minister Bougie Yaalon accuses Israel of ethnic cleansing. And avid anti-Israel activists such as (check notes) NY Times columnist Tom Friedman and 550 retired senior Israeli security officials are warning of the impact of the Israeli government’s actions on Jews all over the world.

To be crystal clear: Blaming American Jews for what is happening in Gaza and attacking them for the behavior of the Israeli government is antisemitism – end stop. However, let’s also be real. As long as the war goes on and horrific images keep coming out of Gaza, American Jews and Jews across the world will be exposed to a higher level of risk to antisemitic attacks.Subscribe

The third failure is from our allies on the Left in the United States who we are used to having in our corner. As Sheila Katz laid out in the NY Times, there have been too many instances since October 7th where progressives have failed to see Jewish pain. Whether it’s the initial hesitancy by women’s organizations to speak out about the sexual violence that occurred on October 7th or exclusion of “Zionists” from traditional progressive spaces like LGBTQ events or events on preserving the environment. Or use of language in protests that sometimes crosses over from concern for Palestinian lives and freedom, into the type of language that is seen by the extreme fringes of the left as a call to violence (e.g. “by any means necessary” or “globalize the intifada.”)

Another example I saw just a couple of weeks ago, was a series of social media posts with almost 100K likes that singles out a direct link between IDF and ICE exchange programs and what is happening right now in Los Angeles. ICE has these types of relationships with many U.S. partners around the world. Yet somehow we need to draw a direct link to the IDF and explicitly blame Israel and implicitly blame Jews for the Trump Administration’s decision to send the National Guard into Los Angeles.

The most recent instance of this challenge comes from the New York mayoral race and the controversy surrounding Zohran Mamdani. I could write a whole piece about that, but for the moment since this was a post I wrote two weeks ago and don’t want to entirely rewrite, I’ll instead refer you to Jeremy Ben-Ami’s post and our conversation on our substack live last week.

These various examples are all very different, and I’ve written in greater detail about how at least I distinguish between what I see as clearly antisemitic behavior and what are examples of unconscious bias or ignorance. But all of it is disappointing and hard to deal with.

The final failure comes from American Jewish organizations, and here maybe the biggest disappointment is the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). The ADL is a vital organization with an important history. At this moment with what American Jews are facing, it should be THE leading entity countering antisemitism in the United States and yet in too many instances it seems to be coming up short. The latest example is Jonathan Greenblatt’s offensive statements at a conference to Republican Attorney Generals. I tend to agree with the ADL (and maybe not some of my progressive friends) that anti-masking laws are a good idea. They were initially enacted to counter the KKK. But that doesn’t justify Greenblatt saying “You have people hiding their faces behind scarves and keffiyehs like they’re in ISIS, storming libraries, vandalizing buildings and literally – I’m not exaggerating – terrorizing their classmates.” I have my deep skepticism, anger, and frustration about some of the ways protestors have conducted themselves since October 7th. But that does not justify Greenblatt saying “the founding fathers didn’t want al-Qaida right running rampant on our streets.” Al Qaeda murdered nearly 3,000 Americans on September 11th and ISIS beheaded Americans and burned prisoners alive while broadcasting the events around the world. Lumping student protesters, which include many Muslim and Arab Americans, with Al Qaeda and ISIS, perpetuates anti-Arab and anti-Muslim hate. And it gives Donald Trump cover to further hijack the fight against antisemitism for his anti-democratic agenda. These are the types of statements you might excuse or ignore at a family gathering from a relative you don’t really agree with. Coming from the leader of the preeminent American Jewish organization charged with fighting antisemitism and “secur[ing] justice and fair treatment to all.” It’s a major problem.

How we Respond

So what are liberal American Jews to do with this situation where the U.S. government, Israeli government, some progressive allies, and some mainstream Jewish organizations are all coming up short in different ways? The good news is that there is a lot to do and many good options for how to do it.

Standing up to the U.S. government is straightforward. Keep speaking out for the things we care about and believe in as a community and make clear that when the Trump administration cuts billions in education funding or deports visa holders without any due process all in the name of countering antisemitism, they do not speak for us.

When it comes to the Israeli government, we also need to be expressing our concern especially over what is happening in Gaza. Here I’ll just quote from the letter of 550 retired security officials:

We categorically reject the notion that Jews in the diaspora must remain silent on matters concerning Israel. Israel was founded as the homeland of the entire Jewish people, and its Declaration of Independence recognizes the essential role of diaspora Jewry in shaping our collective destiny. Whereas Israeli decisions will be made exclusively by Israelis who live here, the views of our partners in this historic Jewish joint venture should inform those decisions. To those who fear that public criticism undermines Israel, we say that open, honest dialogue only reinforces our democracy and our security. As we learned repeatedly, in security, suppressing criticism or demanding silence is outright dangerous. In interJewish dialogue, it risks eroding the very foundations upon which Israel was built.

The good news is that there are many Israelis who agree with this point and disagree with their current government, including most of the hostage families. Building alliances between liberal U.S. Jews and this Israeli opposition is essential. And J Street is the vital organization that is giving American Jews a political voice in expressing this concern to our leaders in the United States. And so if this is something you want to do, please do get involved.

As for engaging with progressives… Again, there are many allies out there including the 60 civil rights organizations that signed on to join a letter condemning the recent attacks. The key is for Jews to be engaging with progressive allies, and for them to be supporting Jews and calling out antisemitism when they see it on the left. The other key here is that oftentimes, what Jews are dealing with on the left is unconscious bias or ignorance. There the best solution is to be present in progressive spaces and have those awkward hard conversations that educate or point these things out.

Finally, when it comes to Jewish organizations, the good news is that there are many that are getting things right at this moment. Obviously I’m partial to J Street. But there are also many others, including the ten Jewish organizations that represent a large swath of American Jewry – including three of the four denominations – and signed onto a statement rejecting the false choice between Jewish safety and democracy.

And so the bottom line is that at this moment, things are scary, complicated, and exhausting. It’s disappointing that this is so hard and the supports aren’t stronger. However, there are many tools, resources and organizations that liberal American Jews can use to stand up, be heard, and fight back.

Founding of the Jewish Sports Club Bar Kochba, 1910

Ivonne Meybohm

Source Description

The Jüdische Turnzeitung. Monatsschrift für die körperliche Hebung der Juden [Jewish Gymnasts’ Paper. Monthly Publication for the Physical Improvement of the Jews] was the central organ of the Jewish Gymnasts’ Association , the umbrella organization of national-Jewish sports clubs. In its 1910 March / April issue, an author only identified as “B.”, presumably Hamburg physician and chairman of the local Zionist chapter Max Besser (1877–1941), described the circumstances leading to the founding of a national-Jewish sports club in Hamburg named Bar Kochba.

The ninth Zionist congress, which had taken place in late 1909 / early 1910 in Hamburg, offered a supporting program consisting of a harbor tour, religious services, and a gymnastics exhibition by Jewish athletes at the zoological garden’s Ernst-Merck arena, a venue located behind the Dammtor train station.

The gymnastics exhibition attracted a large audience and generated great interest among Hamburg’s Jewish youth to train regularly in a Jewish gymnastics club. Since the existing Jewish gymnastics club, Hamburg Jewish Gymnasts’ Association of 1902  had reservations concerning these potential new members due to their supposed Zionist convictions, a committee chaired by Hamburg philosopher and political economist Ernst Tuch (1872–1922), who had been a longstanding member of Berlin’s Jewish sports club Bar Kochba, and Hamburg chemist and businessman Walter Weigert (1883–1952) founded a local chapter of the Berlin Jewish sports club Bar Kochba in Hamburg on March 14, 1910.

The emergence of a Jewish gymnastics movement in Germany

During the second Zionist congress, which took place from August 28 to 31, 1898 in Basel, Max Nordau, the Zionist organization’s “spiritus rector”, presented his idea of a “Muskeljudentum” [muscle Jewry]: “Zionism revitalizes Judaism. In moral terms, it effects this by a rejuvenation of national ideals. With regard to the body, it does so by the physical education of its youth, who are once again going to create the muscle Jewry that has disappeared.”  Individual physical exercise was meant to become a preparation for and part of a wide-ranging renewal of Judaism in Europe. In addition to that, Zionism aimed to strengthen the Jewish community spirit beyond national borders and in the long term to create a specific place of refuge for Jews who were marginalized or persecuted by the respective majority society. In its role of carrying out the supposedly necessary physical regeneration among the Jews, sports became a significant part of a new Jewish national movement.

Only two months after the congress, 48 Berlin students close to the Zionist movement acted on Nordau’s demand: on October 22, 1898 imperial Germany’s first Jewish gymnastics club was founded in Berlin. It was called Jewish Gymnasts’ Association Bar Kochba , named after the leader of the Jewish revolt against Roman rule in antiquity (132-135 CE). Other cities soon saw the founding of Jewish gymnastics clubs as well. During the sixth Zionist congress held in 1903 in Basel, an umbrella organization of Jewish gymnastics clubs  was established, whose almost identical name to its anti-Zionist Hamburg equivalent was purely coincidental. This umbrella organization united the different Bar Kochba associations run by Zionist students in many European countries and in Palestine. After activities in gymnastics clubs had come to almost a complete standstill during the First World War, a new umbrella organization was established in 1921 during the twelfth Zionist congress at Karlsbad . It was called Maccabi World Union, a name choice which reflected its increasingly international character. In 1929, European Maccabi Games were held near Prague, and in 1932 the first “Maccabiah Games”, the “Jewish Olympics”, took place in Palestine. When Jewish athletes were excluded from German sports clubs in 1933, Jewish sports clubs grew significantly: while about 8,000 athletes were active in Maccabi sports clubs in 1933, their number rose to more than 21,000 within three years. Following the 1938 November pogrom, the National Socialists closed all Jewish organizations and associations across Germany, thus also putting an end to the Jewish sports movement in Germany.

Jewish sports in Hamburg

In Hamburg the Israelite Gymnasts’ Association of 1899 , whose members were former students of Hamburg’s Talmud Torah School, existed since 1899 and did not have any connection to the abovementioned clubs newly established in reaction to Nordau’s appeal. In 1902 the Hamburg Jewish Gymnasts’ Association of 1902 , mentioned in the report, emerged from this club. Due to political differences this club did not join the eponymous umbrella organization, however. While friendly relations initially existed between the umbrella organization and the Hamburg Gymnasts’ Association , the latter developed an increasing opposition to the Jewish Gymnasts’ Association . In October 1905 the Hamburg Gymnasts’ Association  even called for the establishment of its own umbrella organization that was supposed to distance itself explicitly from “national Jewish” ideas. Although this initiative was never realized, relations between the Hamburg Gymnasts’ Association  and the umbrella organization were poisoned ever since.

The gymnastics exhibition at the Hamburg Zionist congress had, as the report reads, raised great interest among Hamburg’s Jewish youth “to take active part in the work of physical regeneration of the Jews” and to become regularly active in a Jewish sports club. These future athletes initially planned to join the existing sports club, the Hamburg Gymnasts’ Association . Hamburg Zionists Ernst Tuch and Walter Weigert had organized the gymnastics exhibition and subsequently led negotiations with the Hamburg Gymnasts’ Association . The board members were concerned that these new members would introduce Zionist ideas into their sports club, however. Therefore it is not surprising that the majority required to admit Jewish national athletes could not be reached following the Hamburg Zionist congress. Nor is it surprising that it was not the members of the existing Hamburg Jewish sports club who were invited to participate in the gymnastics exhibition during the ninth Zionist congress in Hamburg, but gymnasts from other cities such as Berlin, Cologne, and Poznan. Yet there were also 40 female and eight male Hamburg athletes who were not organized in any group and participated in the gymnastics exhibition together with the athletes from other cities.

When negotiations with the Hamburg Gymnasts’ Association  failed, a committee chaired by Tuch and Weigert on March 14, 1910 founded another Jewish sports club, the Jewish Gymnasts’ Association Bar Kochba Hamburg , “to promote gymnastics and the cultivation of all physical exercise such as hiking, swimming, rowing, sports and play among the Jewish population of Hamburg-Altona in line with our tribe’s heritage,” as the report states.

In choosing the name “Bar Kochba Hamburg” for their club, its members positioned themselves on the side of the national Jewish gymnasts. Its founding in March 1910 documents the opposing positions towards Zionism within Hamburg’s Jewish community. These opposing views also reflect a fundamental conflict within German Jewry at the time: while a minority openly joined the Zionist organization, the majority regarded it with skepticism. Most German Jews during this period felt represented by the goals formulated by the Central Association of German Citizens of the Jewish Faith (CV) , an association founded in 1893 to combat antisemitism. Beginning in the 1910s, the ideological rift between the supporters of the CV and the Zionists widened. While the supporters of the CV sought to refute antisemitic prejudice and fight antisemitism by emphasizing their German citizenship and Jewish-German national consciousness, the Zionists did not believe that antisemitism could be overcome by education and rational arguments. Instead they pursued the creation of a separate, Jewish national consciousness.

Zionist versus national Jewish

Since the Zionists’ openly national-political work was frowned upon by many patriotic German Jews, the Bar Kochba gymnasts’ clubs expressly did not refer to themselves as Zionist, but as national Jewish [nationaljüdisch] in order to stress their independence from the Zionist organization. However, both the so-called “gymnastics exhibition” by Bar Kochba athletes during the Zionist congress and the selection of contributors to the association’s central publication, the Jüdische Turnzeitung [Jewish Gymnasts’ Paper], demonstrate the close ties these sports clubs had with Zionism: many of its authors, including the presumed author of this report, held positions in the Zionist organization. Moreover, the Jewish Colonial Bank the Zionists’ financial arm, advertised its stock in the paper, and the articles featured in it barely differed in content from those appearing in other Zionist publications such as the Jüdische Rundschau or the Blau-Weiß-Blätter.

At the beginning of the 20th century the great majority of Jewish-German athletes were organized in the German Gymnasts’ Association  or other non-confessional sports clubs and did not join a Jewish sports club, however. In Hamburg this became particularly evident by the fact that a Jewish sports club, the sports club “shield”  organized by the Reich Association of Jewish Veterans , was only founded in 1933 following the exclusion of Jewish athletes from non-confessional sports clubs.

The further development of the Hamburg Bar Kochba club

Just a few weeks after the founding of the Hamburg association, the ladies’ department began its athletic activities in the newly built gymnasium of the Eimsbüttel gymnastics club , as the report proudly announces. Over time further agreements regarding the hourly or daily use of sports facilities by the Bar Kochba club were made with other non-confessional sports clubs in Hamburg. Apart from the gymnastics groups, Hamburg’s Bar Kochba also had groups for rowing and swimming, the latter of which was granted discounted admission to the Alsterlust pool that had opened in 1888 and was located at Lombardsbrücke in the St. Georg neighborhood. Additionally, several hiking groups were established as well as a men’s fencing squad that was led by Hamburg attorney Manfred Zadik (1887–1965), as the report mentions.

The club leased an athletic field on Alsterdorfer Straße near the Winterhude market square that it was able to use on a daily basis beginning in spring 1910. In addition to track and field, its members used it to play soccer, fistball, and rounders as well as popular running games of the time such as Barlauf and relay races.

One peculiarity of the Hamburg Bar Kochba was its high number of female members in comparison to the other clubs belonging to its umbrella organization. Counting 160 members at its founding in March 1910, the club had 111 female and 107 male members by June of the same year. By September the numbers had risen to 127 women and 116 men. A closer look at the members who actually actively practiced sports shows that the share of women was even higher: about 50 women practiced gymnastics every Wednesday evening in the Eimsbüttel gymnastics club’s  newly built gymnasium at Schlankreye that was outfitted with the most modern exercise equipment; by late 1911, 56 women participated. Meanwhile only an average 35 men were active in the men’s gymnastics group. While the average female membership in the umbrella organization was 37% in 1912, this number was significantly higher in Hamburg. As the report points out, the Hamburg Gymnasts’ Association  denied its adult female members voting rights, so it is fair to assume that many female Jewish gymnasts joined the Bar Kochba where they were granted voting rights while male Jewish gymnasts had voting rights in either organization, so this aspect presumably did not play a role in their choice of club.

Over time the number of female and male athletes became increasingly balanced, with the number of women remaining high in the gymnastics groups while male athletes tended to be active in the soccer, rowing or fencing groups instead.

In 1914 there were 21 national Jewish German gymnasts’ associations who belonged to the umbrella organization. The JTV Bar Kochba Hamburg was one of twelve national Jewish gymnasts’ associations founded in imperial Germany that continued to exist after the First World War while athletic activities ceased almost completely in most other clubs. Beginning in the 1920s, athletes, especially teenagers, received instruction in Jewish history and culture in addition to sports. At the Munich Gymnastics Day  held in September 1919, the Jewish Gymnasts’ Association  demanded of its members not only a “national Jewish pledge, but also work for the national Jewish cause, i.e. active participation in the revival of the Jewish people and the rebuilding of the Jewish land.”  In addition to exercising one’s own body, this was also meant to include learning the Hebrew language. Subsequent issues of the Jüdische Turn- und Sportzeitung included multiple-page lists providing the Hebrew terms for trunk-bends, push-ups, and other gymnastics terms.

In Hamburg one way in which this instruction was carried out was in the form of lectures and recitals held at the club house at Bornstraße 25 purchased in 1927. Along with the Berlin, Wroclaw , Leipzig, and Frankfurt am Main clubs, Bar Kochba Hamburg was one of the largest German sports clubs which was organized in the Maccabi World Union beginning in 1921.

In 1930 the club celebrated its 20-year anniversary by hosting the Maccabi Games, to which two athletes from Palestine were also invited. In the years between 1933 and 1938 the club’s work in Hamburg was mainly focused on preparing its young members for emigration – this was the case in both the Maccabi and the “shield” sports clubs – although sports programs continued until the disbanding of all Jewish associations in November 1938.

Cyrus the Great ‘King of Persia’ was the only Gentile to be given
the title ‘Messiah’ for the reason he allowed the Jews to return to
the Promised Land and rebuild the second temple.

Dr. Max Nardau was an atheist who subscribed to Muscular Judaism and
supported the Israelitische Turnverein that would become the Maccabi
sports clubs. Nordau died in Paris in 1923 and was re-interred in
Tel Aviv in 1926. One could say he was the Moses of the Zionist
cause that needs to be redefined. Is Zion a muscle or a brain? Is it
a place or an ideal? Is it a Jewish Utopia, or another Ghetto?

One thing it is for sure, is, a World Problem that defies a
solution, a final solution. For the reason Zionist Israel was
founded by secular gymnasts who were Freethinkers, Atheist, and
Terrorists, Zion became a territorial objective that ignored
reasonable warnings that they were doomed to fail in their mission.

In the age of the computer all of humanity is moving into cyber
space, a virtual reality that comes across all the old borders and
unites us as one people. Islam on the other hand is a religious
movement that desires to unite all Muslims in the Middle East and
create one united territory that will be defined by lines on a map,
but more so by ones loyalty to Mohammed and Allah. It has become
clear Israel can not stand up to, or get in the way of this
imperative.

Therefore, it is time for Israel and Zion to move into cyber space,
and establish a New Capitol in the New Land. I believe I have found
that New Land and Zion in the Channel Islands off the Coast of
California. There are two islands that would be ideal for the
foundation of a New Zion. One is Santa Rosa Island, and the other
Santa Cruz Island. Cruz means “cross” and was named after a staff
capped with a cross that was found by a Indian on the island, and
returned to the Spanish. How Mosaic.

Santa Cruz is a privately owned Island, and Santa Rosa was purchased
in 1980 by the United States Government and is a National Park. I am
not sure if the Channel Islands in the U.S. Territory. I suggest a
proposal be put before President Bush to turn it over the Nation of
Israel after it restructures its foundation, and adopts a less
adversarial view of it place in the world.

I suggest Santa Cruz Island be purchased for Israel by all the
nations of the world, including the President of Iran. With this
purchase will come a truce and a recognition that will never be
contested again.

Twenty six miles away is the city of Los Angeles which has one of
the largest Jewish populations outside Israel. The New Zion of
Rosacruz could be a Capital of a new direction that can move Zionism
into a inner spiritual space that will be surrounded by the Pacific
Ocean. I see a New Atlantis, and new Trade Members of the Pacific
Rim. I see a Capital for World Ecology and World Peace. And even
though we may be losing a pristine part of the world, we may be
saving the world billions of dollars, and much anguish and
destruction due to the never ending Crisis in the Middle East that
is consuming the world’s resources and surpluses that can be
redirected to the problems of global warming, and other sources of
fuel oil. Here is a new Eden that can research how to build new
habitats, invent new attitudes of how Mankind dwells in the Creation.

“In the United States, too, the opposition grew apace.

The “Reform Advocate” in Chicago suggested editorially that the real
object of Herzl and Nordau was to possess themselves of the savings
of their poorer brethren. Isaac M. Wise, president of the Hebrew
Union College, thought that the Zionists were “traitors, hypocrites,
or fantastic fools whose thoughts, sentiments, and actions are in
constant contradiction to one another” (“Hebrew Union College
Journal,” Dec., 1899, p. 47); while Rabbi Samfield wrote in
the “Jewish Spectator” that “Zionism is an abnormal eruption of
perverted sentiment.” Prof. Louis Grossman held that the “Zionistic
agitation contradicts everything that is typical of Jews and
Judaism,” and that the “Zionistic movement is a mark of ingenuity,
and does not come out of the heart of Judaism, either ancient or
contemporary” (“Hebrew Union College Journal,” Dec., 1899, p. 72).

Santa Cruz Island

Santa Cruz Island is the largest privately owned island off the
Continental United States. The island encompasses 96 square miles or
about 62,000 acres and is approximately 22 miles long. For
comparison, it is over four times the size of Manhattan (22 square
miles) or Bermuda (19 square miles), and is larger that the District
of Columbia (61 square miles). It lies about 22-25 miles off the
adjacent mainland coast of Santa Barbara, California. . In 1987,
9/10ths of the island passed to The Nature Conservancy with the
death of its owner, Carey Stanton. The remaining 1/10th is owned by
the Gherini family, the great grandchildren of Justinian Caire. In
February 1997, the Gherini holdings will pass to the National Park
Service for inclusion in the Channel Islands National Park.

The first all Jewish gymnastic club was formed in 1895 known as the
Israelitische Turnverein Konstantinopel (Israelite Gymnastic
Association Constantinople), it was formed by German and Austrian
Jews residing in Constantinople (Istanbul – Kushta) who were
unwelcome at the German gymnastic societies with their “Aryan –
only” membership proclivities.Modeling themselves on the very German
organization which had barred them, they adopted the slogan of the
vigorous, devout, cheerful and free.

Another milestone in the formation of the Jewish sport movement
occurred at a meeting of the permanent committee of the Second
Zionist Congress held in Basel in 1898. Dr. Max Nordau made an
impassioned plea for a Muscular Judaism noting that “We Jews possess
an exceptional gift for physical activity. It may by that this will
appear paradoxical since we have been accustomed for generations to
view ourselves in the mirror which our enemies have held up to so,
and to discover any number of physical blemishes. It is true that
our muscles have been weakened and that our attitudes and postures
are not always satisfactory… but when Jews do engage in sport their
defects vanish, their postures improve, their muscles become strong
and their general health gets better”. Similarly, Herzl stressed
that the derisive term coined by the anti-Semites, Judenjungen (akin
to “Jewboy”), should be reversed in both form and content, and give
way to the meritorious appellation Junge Juden (Young Jew).Following
Herzl’s and Nordau’s call, many clubs were quickly organized.

This nascent movement received an immeasurable boost with the
appearance in 1900 of the first periodical dedicated entirely to
Jewish sport, Die Juedische Turanzeitung, which was the official
publication of the pre-eminent Jewish gymnastic club, Juedische
Turnverein Bar Kochba – Berlin. Bolstered by the newspaper’s daring
proclamation, the by now numerous Jewish gymnastic clubs banded
together in 1903 under the umbrella organization of Die Juedische
Turnerschaft (Jewish Gymnastic Association) with headquarters in
Berlin. The constitution of Die Juedische Turnerschaft permitted
membership to every Jewish gymnastic club that accepted that “the
aim of the society is to foster gymnastics as a medium to build up
physical fitness as part of the Jewish National Idea.”

Rev. John Wilson Jr.- First Harvard Graduate

John Presco reading from The History of the Wilson Family

Harvard University has laid off the staff of its Harvard Slavery Remembrance Program, the unit of its $100 million Harvard & the Legacy of Slavery initiative tasked with identifying the direct descendants of those enslaved by Harvard affiliates.

“Wilson was said to have written a ballad about the event, which was sung by young men around Boston.[61]

JOHN WILSON, Jr., was born in Windsor, Essex, England, in September 1621. He came with his father to New England in 1630. He graduated from Harvard College in 1642, was ordained and settled in Dorcester, Norfolk, MA, where he was a colleague of Rev. Richard Mather.

Harvard’s first commencement was a solemn affair. There were nine graduates in the class of 1642: Benjamin Woodbridge, George Downing, John Bulkeley, William Hubbard, Samuel Bellingham, John Wilson, Henry Saltonstall, Tobias Barnard, and Nathaniel Brewster.

Site of the Homestead of Rev. John Wilson Marker

For years I asked my friends who graduated from Harvard, to help me with my writing. Mark Gall was the head of the Department of Education at the University of Oregon, and Edwin Corbin was a major drop-out of society who built a homestead in Yahachts where he raised three sons. When I admonished Ed for not keeping a detailed log of his Wooded Adventure and submit it to the Archives of Harvard, he knew he missed his calling. Mt. Gall missed his calling by refusing to be my mentor. I run the largest blog in the world named after my grandfather, a self-published author who found Gem Publishing. When I informed my two friends it appears I am a descendant of John Wilson, whose son was the first graduate of Harvard, they distanced themselves from me. They saw me as a INTRUDER trying to sneak in the back door. In their Crimson Eyes, I was a high school drop-out that was great at EA Sports. We played a lot of Tuber Woods Golf. I took care of Ed after he had a stroke, along with taking care of Virginia Hambley. When Jon Gall became gravely ill, I took his to his doctor apartments in my 1977 Toyota Carola I named The Mustard Mobile! Throw in Ed’s Beer Run, and taking four people to the free dinner in Eugene, my breaks and shocks – were shot! Oh, and I was on the bus with Ken Kesey!

Someone can make the case I was The Harvard Slave Boy, who was banished from their midst for my uppity ways. As fate would have it, I AM UP TO BAT with the bases loaded. Thanks to the shake up at Harvard – my genealogical now – WEARS A CROWN! My ninth grandfather, John Wilson, is the alleged co-founder of Harvard, but this allegation is – VANISHING! Why? Well, for one thing he helped hang three Quaker – one of them a woman who was spared, only to be hung a year later. John wrote a ballad about this hanging that was sung by young men in Boston. Mary Dyer has given birth to a monster, that was the subject of the song? I have posted on Wilson inspiring our Constitution is regards to Freedom of Religion and the Right to bare Arms. When did women get the right to vote? When did the first black man cast a vote in the United States? Did, Rev. John Wilson Jr. want to distant himself from…….the song? Did Junior read his father’s poem honoring their kin Joseph Brisco? Was this poem one of the first to be penned in the New World? Why hasn’t Harvard done what I have done – in my FIRST POST on these matters?

Let us do Júnior first. He was born at Windsor Castle. His mother was reluctant to come to America. Who was she close with at the Royal Resident? She was a British Subject in America. Is she related to any of The First Citizens of the United States of America? Consider President Trump’s messing with Citisnedhip Rights – and pasroding Insureectioniist who claim they are on the side of of Jesus. They now have a diploma from Jesus and our Presidient – to damn well what they please, How many read the Bible or went to College?

The Eighth Wonder of the World is why no one has given me a penny in funding. A hundred million dollars was spent on Harvard Slavery Remembrance Program, How much money has Harvard spent on all its programs since it was founded – and they know mi thing about their Founders? Something went wrong. Ed and Mark – hated my genealogical study! Ed is dead,

A federal judge temporarily blocked President Donald Trump’s executive order ending the constitutional guarantee of birthright citizenship for babies born in the United States whose parents are not citizens or lawful permanent residents. U.S. District Judge John C. Coughenour ruled Thursday, Jan. 23, calling the executive order “blatantly unconstitutional.”

On 27 October 1659 three Quakers—Marmaduke Stevenson, William Robinson and Mary Dyer—were led to the Boston gallows from the prison where they had been recently held for their Quaker evangelism, against which Massachusetts had enacted very strict laws. Wilson, now nearly 70, as pastor of the Boston church was on hand as the supervising minister. As the two Quaker men first approached the gallows, wearing hats, Wilson said to Robinson, “Shall such jacks as you come in before authority with your hats on?”[58] Ignoring the barb, Robinson then let forth a barrage of words, to which Wilson angrily responded, “Hold thy tongue, be silent; thou art going to die with a lie in your mouth.”[59] The two Quaker men were then hanged, after which it was Dyer’s turn to ascend the ladder. As the noose was fastened about her neck, and her face covered, a young man came running and shouting, wielding a document which he waved before the authorities. Governor Endecott had stayed her execution.[60] After the two executions had taken place, Wilson was said to have written a ballad about the event, which was sung by young men around Boston.[61]

Before leaving Boston, Mary had given birth to a severely deformed infant that was stillborn. Because of the religious superstitions of the time regarding such a birth, the baby was buried secretly. When the Massachusetts authorities learned of this birth, the ordeal became public, and in the minds of the colony’s ministers and magistrates, the monstrous birth was clearly a result of Mary’s “monstrous” religious opinions. More than a decade later, in late 1651, Mary Dyer boarded a ship for England, and stayed there for over five years, during which time she converted to Quakerism. Because Quakers were considered among the most dangerous of heretics by the Puritans, Massachusetts enacted several laws against them. When Dyer returned to Boston from England, she was immediately imprisoned and then banished. Defying her order of banishment, she was again banished, this time upon pain of death. Deciding that she would die as a martyr if the anti-Quaker laws were not repealed, Dyer once again returned to Boston and was sent to the gallows in 1659, having the rope around her neck when a reprieve was announced. She returned once more to Boston the following year and was then hanged—the third of four Quaker martyrs.
