Zelensky says Russian forces using Zaporizhzhia plant as “nuclear weapon”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said during an ABC News interview shared Sunday that Russia’s occupying forces were using Europe’s largest nuclear power plant as a “weapon.”
What he’s saying: Zelensky said in the interview airing Monday that the threat of Russian forces occupying the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Station in southeastern Ukraine and its six reactors was akin to “six Chernobyls” — a reference to the 1986 nuclear disaster in the northern region of Soviet Ukraine.
- “It means the biggest danger in Europe,” he told ABC’s David Muir in the interview from Ukraine’s presidential office. “So, they occupied it. So that … means that they use [it as a] nuclear weapon.”
- Zelensky added there “shouldn’t be any military equipment on the territory” and there “shouldn’t be the workers of nuclear power plant who are surrounded by people with firearms.”
The big picture: Russian forces have maintained military activity at or near the plant that’s staffed by Ukrainian workers since seizing it in March.
- There have weeks of heavy shelling near the plant that Kyiv and Moscow have blamed on each other.
- The European Union, U.S. and 41 other countries have called on Russian forces to withdraw from the power station.
Meanwhile, the International Atomic Energy Agency, the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog, established a presence at the plant last Thursday amid concerns that nearby shelling could cause a potential disaster.
State of play: The IAEA said in a statement Saturday the plant’s “connection to its last remaining main external power line, but the facility is continuing to supply electricity to the grid through a reserve line” following renewed shelling in the area.
- IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi told reporters when he visited the site Thursday it’s “obvious” that the power station “and the physical integrity of the plant has been violated, several times. However, he couldn’t say whether or not this was deliberate.

Around a hundred German soldiers arrived in Lithuania on Sunday, after Germany pledged to bolster its presence on NATO’s eastern flank following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The troops drove off the ferry in the port city of Klaipeda.
They were to make up the command unit of a new brigade, a group usually made up of around 4,000 soldiers.
“Our message to our allies here, on the eastern flank, is that we are committed to ensuring security,” said the brigade’s commander Christian Nawrat.
The command unit would remain permanently in the Baltic nation, while combat units would join them for exercises, he added.
A high-ranking member of the German military said the first drills could be held in October.
Germany, which heads up a NATO battle group in Lithuania, already has around 1,500 German soldiers in Lithuania.

Victoria Bond and Miriam Starfish were conducting their morning briefing. It was Victoria’s idea to have breakfast together in order to stuff as much knowledge into their day as possible. She looked pleased with herself when her cook brought her ‘The Full English Breakfast’ that Miriam declined. She said she will bring her ‘Box Breakfast’ that she put on the table as Victoria gobbled down her first sausage, and, said a silent prayer. Looking a bit chagrined, Victoria spoke in a polite manner as baked beans tried to escape from out her devouring mouth.
“Oh. You like to say grace before you eat?”
“We, is the correct word, but, I do not force my belief systems on anyone, unless I have to.”
“What do you mean by that?”
“You don’t want to get a Rhos Christling angry.”
From her box, that looked like it had been in a ancient shipwreck, she pulled this cleverly woven basket. Lifting the top, Victoria leaned over to see what she got. Primates are hardwired this way.
“What the hell is that?” Victoria exclaimed as she poked at the yoke of her egg, getting it all mushy so she could dip her scone in it.
“Please! This is the second time I asked you not to swear in my presence. You have tainted my food with the word “hell”. Now I must say another prayer!”
Victoria felt as if the tips of her ears had caught fire. She did not miss the cold blue look Starfish gave her that was a preamble to the pent up rage she just refered to. Starfish had told her about the ritual sacrafices her people once made, using icecycles.
‘How in the world do you get nourishment from that stuff? What is that? Is that a pinecone? Where did you get a pinecone? Is that from Califorona where you grew up? Did someone send this stuff to you……..Who made…….?

Scientists want to launch a rocket with a bomb and blow up the outer body.
In “Rosatom” scientists from the Institute of laser physical research of RFNC-VNIIEF said that creating a system to protect the Earth from potentially dangerous meteorites that are similar to Tunguska.
Deputy Director Vladimir Rogachev said that researchers will locate, classify and monitor dangerous space body. In addition, the researchers will create a special meteor bombs.
Rogachev believes that the subject of meteorites can be a global international problem, but scientists stops as always policy. If you delay, then in the case of approximation to the Ground meteorite, it will be too late to prevent it.
Scientists believe that a meteorite with a diameter of 200 meters, the rocket with the bomb you need to run for a month. In space, two weeks before approaching the atmosphere of our planet, the space body would explode and crumble to pieces. A part of the meteorite of course reach the Ground, but they are devastating the consequences will bring.
Rogachev said that the researchers considered different scenarios and prevent the fall of the meteorite, including using nuclear weapons or military technology.
However, the problem is that at the moment there is no missile that could fly even to the moon, not to mention the distant meteorite. This is the main question that scientists around the world are considering decades. Moreover, “Rosatom” does not need to search and register meteorites, as of 2010, 98% of all similar bodies found and classified, their orbits are also known.
It turns out that the problem is not the bomb, this idea btw, there are a few decades, and in the presence of powerful rockets.

Here is the painting I am working on. It is titled ‘Guardians of Our Voice’. I am inspired by the photo of the two women carrying the electoral votes that I just learned were being taken to the Senate Chamber, and not removed. I will have these women coming to the crest of a hill from out of the advancing darkness. They are carrying the Ark of our Democratic Voice. They are like Guardian Angels.

The picture was hailed as an example of the small acts of heroism by congressional staff to protect the votes before members of Congress and their staffs fled to safety, but assistant Virginia Brown has clarified that the photo was actually taken hours before the siege by pro-Trump supporters.

The signing of these agreements is the best confirmation of our partnership with our Chinese friends. I note that over the course of longstanding cooperation with our reliable partners – China’s Atomic Energy Authority, the National Energy Administration, and the CNNC corporation – we have created an unprecedented level of trust. Therefore, we developed a framework for joint design and construction at the Tianwan site by both Russian and Chinese specialists. We continue to jointly build the most modern Gen 3+ units in China. Moreover, today we agreed to start the construction of VVER-1200 power units at a greenfield site. We have great plans to cooperate in the nuclear sphere, not only with regard to high-power nuclear power plants.”
There were signed two deals on the construction of 4 new units – two at the greenfield site of Xudabao and two at Tianwan (units 7 and 8). All 4 units will feature Russia’s latest Gen3+ VVER-1200 reactors. The reactors, as well as all other necessary equipment, will be developed and supplied to the nuclear island by Russian side.
Third deal envisages the supply of equipment, fuel, and services for the CNNC-developed CFR-600 fast reactor pilot project.
Finally, was signed a deal for the supply of radionuclide heat units (UHR) used as parts of radioisotope thermoelectric generators to power equipment in China’s space programme, for use in lunar exploration in particular.
