The Old Beater and The Corn Maiden

American Nationalism was expressed in the Road Trips you took with The Woman You Love. In 1970 I drove my 1950 Dodge Coronet to the top of our mountain that I found the name of, but lost. When we got to a point in the road that looked down on the Russian River, I took a quick glance at one of the most beautiful women in the world. She has been by my side for a month. We were going back to our campsite. We lived in a white canvas tent that had been set up in Morocco. On top is tied a single bed mattress we just bought from a woman holding a yard sale. This is the Acme of the California Dream.

I cooked Rena breakfast every morning, and stared into her eyes. Her three older sisters were models, and wanted to get her into modeling. She did not like their lifestyle. The few clothes she had were chosen with care. She was a Boho Fashion Queen. With the California backdrop, of river, sea, and forest, we were in Paradise. I offered to teach her how to drive. She loved – our car!  I loved to see Rena in – our car! There was no better car to drive a very beautiful woman around California in. A year later, I depicted Rena as the High Priestess in the second painting I did of her. I just read the HP is a Corn Maiden. Four years ago Rena sent me this poem she wrote, which I had Marilyn’s daughter read.

Irene Victoria Christensen is my model for Victoria Bond. She is a sculptor who admires Camille Claudel. Rena is the muse of  my sisters and I, replicating the bond that Augustus John had with his sister, Gwen, who are kin to Ian Fleming. Our Dodge is our Gypsy Wagon.

All Winter Long by Rena Easton

renap0003Marilyn Reed called me about 5:00 P.M. and told me this was the last Jazz & Poetry Night at the Granary. After three years, it was time for the Muse of Poetry and Jazz, to seek another abode. Many hearts did she warm. Many bright words came from starry beings.

I had little time to prepare. I wanted to bring my blow-up of Rena’s photo that she gave me in 1970 when she was 18. I had brought my muse here before in order to read my poem I wrote about her. Now that we were exchanging words, I wanted to read her poem while the audience beheld her beauty.

Daisy Fellowes (1890 – 1962)

The daughter of Isabelle-Blanche Singer (the heiress of the sewing-machine pioneer) and the Duc Decazes, Marguerite Decazes was raised by her aunt the Princess Edmond de Polignac who initiated her to arts and music, following her mother’s suicide. After her first husband’s death, the Prince de Broglie, she married, in 1919 Reginald Fellowes, one of Winston Churchill’s cousin. An acclaimed beauty and society figure, Daisy Fellows was also the leader of what was called ‘les dames de Vogue’ in the 1920s which established her as a timeless fashion icon – ‘the most elegant and most talked about woman in Paris’ who dared to wear Elsa Schiaparelli’s surrealist designs and Gabrielle Chanel’s total black outfits. Daisy Fellowes took great pleasure in making her counterparts seem frivolously overdressed: at the races, she appeared hatless amid a raft of flounces and bows, she hosted dinners in leopard-print pyjamas while others wore flowery tea gowns. Women feared her as much as admired her: she was a voracious man-eater and terribly cruel. In 1933, she was appointed as the French Harper’s Bazaar editor in chief: a job she quit two years later because she found it boring. As a trendsetter from the Roaring Twenties on through the café-society 1930s, Daisy Fellowes ‘launched more fashions than any other woman in the world’ according to Jean Cocteau.

The High Priestess is also known as Persephone, Isis, the Corn Maiden and Artemis. She sits at the gate before the great Mystery, as indicated by the Tree of Life in the background. She sits between the darkness and the light, represented by the pillars of Solomon’s temple, which suggests it is she who is the mediator of the passage into the depth of reality. The tapestry hung between the pillars keeps the casual onlookers out and allows only those initiated to enter. The pomegranates on the tapestry are sacred to Persephone. They are a symbol of duty (because Persephone ate a pomegranate seed in the underworld which forced her to return every year). The blue robe the Priestess is wearing is a symbol of knowledge. She is wearing the crown of Isis symbolising the Triple Goddess. The solar cross on her breast is a symbol of balance between male and female.

In her lap, she holds the half-revealed and half-concealed Torah, representative of the exoteric and the esoteric teachings and higher knowledge. The moon under her left foot shows her dominion over pure intuition. The palm indicates fertility of the mind and the cube on which she sits is the earth. The planet associated with the High Priestess is the Moon.

Zabriskie – The Musical

“I say hello to Nancy and the artists. I think about the Chicano Artist Sanctuaries I am thinking of founding.”

I wrote the above two days ago. I am seeing into the future. Trump’s good squad own guns and see themselves as cowboys. He is supplying them with targets. Hippies were a favorite target of the Republican-right. We were ‘The Savage Indians’.  We were hunted!

The pardon of Sheriff Joe checked so many boxes for what we know about how Trump views the world and operates that, in retrospect, it was utterly predictable.

This morning I awoke carrying a heavy load. I dreamed I was in a warehouse in New York choosing old props from a play that had failed, or, was never fully produced. Something went wrong. Now, I was the savior of this play. I heard someone say;

“This is an extremely difficult project. This guy gets his big break, and he’s going for this?”

I awoke with FAILURE staring me in the face. What is the play? I lie in bed half asleep and let my intuition look for the answer. Maybe it’s a musical? I thought about my friends in New York and ‘My Big Beautiful Blue Bicycle’ and my unfinished novel ‘The Gideon Computer’. I say hello to Nancy and the artists. I think about the Chicano Artist Sanctuaries I am thinking of founding. Then, I am looking at my next post I had in mind, and – BINGO!

In lest than an hour I am watching Darian Halsprin walking into a hole in the rocks where there is a waterfall in a grotto. it leads to a house designed by the famous architect – as a prop, that is going to be blown-up!

This movie was made in 1970, the year Rena and I went camping for fifty days in my 1950 Dodge. When Christine saw the painting I did of my muse in 1971, she took up art. Life imitates art. Life is a movie. Consider the real estate deal going on in the house.

Angela Davis is in this movie. My daughter’s mother had a son by a Black Panther, who knew Angela. It’s all here. It wrote itself, as if there is a God, and, Art is God.

At the end of director Michelangelo Antonioni’s anti-capitalist, anti-life turkey of a film ‘Zabriskie Point,’ this house — designed by architect Paolo Soleri and (like several scenes in Antonioni’s film) based  on the house in Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘North by Northwest,’ which was itself inspired by  Frank Lloyd Wright’s desert houses — this house is ‘lovingly’ exploded in montage as the ‘climax’ of the film; destroyed in balletic slow motion with “a final destructive glee.”

As a director, Antonioni was for sure an accomplished artist.  His films were honest demonstrations — of essentially anti-life themes.  Antonioni’s original ending to this film, which was the perfect culmination of his film’s theme, was a shot of an airplane sky-writing the phrase “Fuck You, America,” which was cut by MGM president Louis F. Polk.

Never doubt that’s what he meant this replacement scene to say — “a series of slow-motion captures of capitalistic debris flying apart against a smoky blue background.”  Never doubt that he meant it.

That’s why the house needed to be so good.  Understand that, and you understand much of modern art.  Think about it.

And from the siting of the house you can begin to appreciate what it means to “integrate architecture with your site.”

About Elias Brevoort

Seems to have started as a Loyalist <see list. Not to be confused with another Elias Brevoort now on the DAR list and served under Major Goetchius (NJ) ref: DAR# A104082 . His younger brother Henry remained “loyal” in the Out Ward of New York and preserved the family farm just north of Washington Square.

One Elias Brevoort was granted land in Digby, NS as a Loyalist refugee. Evidently, he returned to the US just as many other refugees did.

A year ago I posted the idea that Zabriskie Point would make a great musical.
