American fur trader John Jacob Astor sent a ship in 1810 to present-day Alaska with the intention of supplying New Archangel. The supplies were welcomed by Baranov, and he hired the ship to transport furs to Guangzhou.[12]: 77–80 Upon learning of the pressing issue of American sales of firearms, Astor conceived of plan beneficial to both his American Fur Company and the RAC. In return for a monopoly to supply Russian stations through his subsidiary Pacific Fur Company and the right to transport RAC furs to the Qing Empire, Astor promised to refrain from selling firearms to Alaskan natives. The Russian Minister to the United States, Count Fyodor Palen, was informed of the proposal. He contacted the Imperial government, noting that the deal would likely be more effective at ending the firearm sales than through diplomatic channels with the United States.[10] Astor’s son-in-law, Adrian B. Benton, traveled to Saint Petersburg in 1811 to negotiate with company and government officials.
Russel Farnham, an American adventurer, explorer, and fur trader, was sent by John Jacob Astor in 1811 to establish Fort Astoria, the first United States settlement on the Pacific Coast. He would later influence legislation that created the Oregon Territory and the State of Oregon. Although he spent just over three years in the Oregon Country, it made a deep and lasting impression on him.
While most accounts of Farnham list his birth as 1784, town birth records for West Springfield, Massachusetts, show that he was born on November 14, 1785. He was the only son of John and Sarissa Farnham, and he had three sisters—Lovisa, Sarissa, and Pamelia.
Farnham joined Astor’s Pacific Fur Company as a clerk in 1810 and arrived at the mouth of the Columbia River on the Tonquin. He helped build the fort in the spring of 1811 and was later sent to trade with the Salish (Flathead) tribe near present-day Thompson Falls, Montana. When control of the fort passed to the British, Farnham and several other stranded Americans left on the brig Pedler with Wilson P. Hunt, who had been in charge of the fort. Farnham served as third officer under Captain Northrop.
At the Russian settlement in present-day Sitka, Alaska, Farnham joined the crew of the Forester under Captain William Pigot and traveled to Kamchatka, Russia. The captain sent him overland to St. Petersburg with the proceeds of the sale of the ship’s cargo of furs. He then traveled back to New York through Copenhagen.
After returning to the United States, Farnham made the acquaintance of Senator Thomas Hart Benton and Representative John Floyd. During the winter of 1820 and 1821, Farnham and Ramsay Crooks, a fellow Pacific Fur Company trader, worked on behalf of Astor’s American Fur Company to lobby Congress for revision of government regulations that circumscribed trading with Natives. Farnham and Crooks stayed at Brown’s Hotel in Washington, D.C., where Benton and Floyd also lodged. They sang the praises of Oregon Country. As Benton later reported, “their conversation, rich in information upon a new and interesting country, was eagerly devoured by the ardent spirit of Floyd. He resolved to bring forward the question of occupation, and did so.”
In 1821, Floyd presented the first report and bill to Congress in support of the United States occupation of the Columbia River, an effort he pursued until 1829. Floyd credited Farnham and Crooks as the source of much of his information.
On October 27, 1829, Farnham married Susan Bosseron in St. Louis. A year later, they had their only son, Charles. While in the fur trade on the Mississippi River, Farnham had been married to Agathe Wood, of the Menominee tribe in Wisconsin; they had a daughter named Mary Ann. Agathe later returned to her home in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, where she was known as the widow of Russel Farnham. Their daughter would continue to use the Farnham name until her death in 1886.
Russel Farnham died suddenly in St. Louis on October 23, 1832, an early victim of the first cholera epidemic to hit the United States. His body was buried unceremoniously at night. Due to his sudden death, his estate and landholdings would be caught up in legal battles for years.
In this letter, marked “Private,” Benton mentions that he has taken interest in the questions that the recipient of this letter has asked, but cannot answer them himself. Benton advises this person to direct his queries toward Astor. Benton closes his letter by saying that the affairs of things west of the Rocky Mountains require negotiations with England. This letter is written on off-white paper and has a self-cover sealed with red sealing-wax. The self-cover is stamped with the date 1831 October 7.
Yet the idea of a passage to India, with its associated images of fabulous wealth, of ivory and apes and peacocks, led a vigorous existence pm the level of imagination entirely apart from its practicability. So rich and compelling was the notion that it remained for decades one of the ruling conceptions of American thought about the West. It was almost an obsession with Thomas Hart Benton of Missouri, who during the thirty years following the death of Jefferson was the most conspicuous and best-informed champion of westward expansion in Congress. Benton’s public career extended from the beginnings of the Santa Fe Trail and the heyday of the Rocky Mountain fur trade to the eve of the Civil War. During all this time he was indefatigable in analyzing the problems of the West and urging the cause of expansion Defeated for the Senate in 1850 because of his free-soil views, he returned to the House of Representatives in 1854 and threw his energies into the cause of a Pacific railway. Almost to the day of his death in 1858 he was making speeches in behalf of the railway and the general development of the West.
Benton was a devoted follower of Thomas Jefferson. He believed, according to his daughter Jessie Benton Fremont, that a visit he paid to the aged statesman at Monticello late in 1824 was the occasion of a laying on of hands, a ceremony at which Benton received the mantle of the first prophet of American expansionism.12 So strong was Benton’s piety, in fact, that he read into Jefferson ideas of his own which were not there or at most were present in an embryonic state. The point is not of great significance, but it is suggestive enough to warrant passing

notice. In his Thirty Years View Benton wrote that Jefferson sent Lewis and Clark out to open commercial communicatlon with Asia. “And thus Mr. Jefferson,” he added, “was the first to propose the North American road to India, and the introduction of Asiatic trade on that road; and all that I myself have either said or written on that subject . . . is nothing but the fruit of the seed planted in my mind by the philosophic hand of Mr. Jefferson.”13 Jessie Benton is even more explicit concerning Jefferson’s conception of the Lewis and Clark expedition. Paraphrasing this passage from her father’s memoirs, she says that Jefferson told Congress the Lewis and Clark expedition would `open overland commercial relations with Asia; and enlarge the boundaries of geographical science’-putting as the first motive a North-American road to India, and the introduction of Asiatic trade over that road.14
The words enclosed in quotation marks do not occur in Jefferson’s message to Congress proposing the expedition, or indeed in any other statement of Jefferson known to me. The notion of trade with Asia was so strong in the Benton tradition eighty years after the message was delivered that it actually colored Jessie Benton’s memory.
Benton’s interest in the passage to India grew out of an elaborate philosophy of westward expansion. After a childhood and youth in North Carolina and Tennessee, he served under Jackson with the Tennessee militia in 1812. His daughter says that this experience determined him to identify himself with the West, the vast basin of the Mississippi, and to repudiate “the exclusively English and seaboard influences to which he had been born and in which he had been trained.” The Atlantic coast, for father and daughter alike, is identified with European tradition: it is “the English seaboard” and is viewed as an influence stifling the development of the American personality by imposing deference to precedent and safe usage. By contrast, access to Asia becomes a symbol of freedom and of national greatness for America. Benton adopts the role of a Moses leading his people out of bondage. Chapter Five: The Manhattan Declaration
“She’s pregnant!” Clive told Victoria across the cold glass that covered his families ancient mahogany desk where the fate of world’s shipping was mapped out in secret trade agreements. Everything was Insured.
“Who’s pregnant?” Victoria asked, and tried to oppress the hot blood that rushed to her brain.
“Miriam.” Clive said, and studied Victoria’s reaction.
“She’s….with child? She told me she was a virgin. I am a virgin. That was our seal, our bond. How do you know? Did she tell you?”
“Breath! Take three deep breaths – and think calm thoughts. Your face is turning red. You need to meditate!”
“I need to meditate?” Victoria was fighting off a torrent of Christian Shame. She had used logic to dismiss the truth that she was having a Lesbian relationship, but, the idea that her lover got pregnant, filled her soul, her brain, with the idea she had done something – very bad – as if she knocked-up her beloved Starfish.
How she acquired Catholic Sin in the bowels of the College of Heraldry, must be due to all the mottos she read on the Coat of Arms, and, the religious notes she had to carefully study in cases of Crusader Knighthood. There were many who belonged to orders that sprang from Jerusalem. There was images of baby Jesus in a manger. All this sin and shame!
“How did you find out Starfish is pregnant? Victoria was glaring at Clive.

“Are the men at BAD tested? Do you have photos of them relieving themselves on file!” asked Victoria, she sounding like a moron due to her lower jaw being numb. Reaching with her hand, she swore when she felt the big white bandage.
“Fuck! I had planned to go shopping while in London! I can’t be seen like this!”
“Wear a smog mask. They make very expensive ones that are in fashion! Don’t get up.”
“Fuck you! Give me something to throw. It must be spendy. Couldn’t you have ordered a bouquet of flowers and put them on the desk, when you told me the fucking blessed good news. I love Miriam, you rotten bastards! I feel so defiled! I want my tinkling pics – now! And Miriam’s! How dare you! Is nothing sacred?”
“We do not capture you while tinkling, but when you turn on the faucet to wash your hands. This flushes the toilet. Haven’t you noticed the delay?”
‘Why do you do this?” Victoria asked, then, took three quiet breaths. “Washing ones hands is a very sacred practice – you creeps! When we use public toilets we spread the message we are not spreading germs. You have dirtied – us! We love our mirrors you place a camera behind. We give our best look. Why!”
“When women have an unexpected pregnancy, they become very vulnerable – to our enemy. Most women believe it is their right to privately summon their higher power to deal with – the big surprise! Many women have no higher power, and fall back on the myth of pure logic – that does not exist! Everyone in Western Culture is subjected to a Shame-base, Christian morality. It comes with the total package. There exist a very intrusive ambitious Abortion Cult that swoops down on vulnerable women in high places. Have you heard of Charles Colson?”

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is angrily objecting to the House of Representatives’ articles of impeachment, accusing Democrats of “perversion of justice and abuse of power” in their effort to remove him from office.
In a fiery letter Tuesday to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on the eve of his expected impeachment, Trump maintained that he did nothing wrong in seeking foreign investigation of political rivals, and he attacked Democrats for focusing on impeachment rather than other issues.
Trump also repeated his objections to the process of the House inquiry, claiming “more due process was afforded to those accused in the Salem Witch Trials.”
Trump says he doesn’t believe his letter will change anything, but that he is registering his objections “for the purpose of history.”
Meanwhile at the Capitol, House Democrats and Republicans sparred over the rules of debate for Wednesday’s historic votes on impeaching Trump, dispatching the lofty rhetoric of constitutional duty for the rugged politics of the House action and Senate trial that is expected to follow.

The Manhattan Declaration: A Call of Christian Conscience is a manifesto issued by Orthodox, Catholic, and EvangelicalChristian leaders[1][2][3] to affirm support of “the sanctity of life, traditional marriage, and religious liberty“.[4] It was drafted on October 20, 2009, and released November 20, 2009, having been signed by more than 150 American religious leaders.[5] On the issue of marriage, the declaration objects not only to same-sex marriage but also to the general erosion of the “marriage culture” with the specter of divorce, greater acceptance of infidelity and the uncoupling of marriage from childbearing.[6]
The Declaration’s website encourages supporters to sign the declaration, and it counts 551,130 signatures as of July 18, 2015[update].[7]

Some religious leaders have criticized and protested the Manhattan Declaration, calling its principles in general, and its opposition to same-sex marriage in particular, contrary to the teachings of Jesus.[15][16][17] Catholic scholar Anthony Stevens-Arroyo wrote, “While two wars are being waged, with unemployment in double digits, the financial system of the world in suspense, these religious leaders declare that abortion, stem-cell use and same sex marriage override any other Gospel value. (You won’t find Jesus saying anything about abortion or stem cells in the Gospel, but the Savior said a great deal about the homeless, the sick, and the hungry.) It’s cheating to speak pious platitudes about Christianity and ignore Jesus’ words.”[18]
Some discussed the document as a political strategy, regarding it as the religious right’s effort to re-establish its relevance in the public square,[19][20] but others noted that younger generations of evangelicals and Catholics were less likely to oppose same-sex marriage and more likely to prioritize economic issues over social, and that the document was thus unlikely to win them over.[20][21] Stevens-Arroyo criticized fellow Catholics who signed the declaration for aligning themselves with evangelicals in what he described as opposition to the separation of church and state.[22]
The declaration’s invocation of Martin Luther King and of the principles of civil disobedience has also been questioned.[23][24] An editorial in the Los Angeles Times characterized the invocation of King as “specious” and criticized the document, belittling the “anecdotes” regarding restrictions on Christians’ religious freedom as “of the sort radio talk-show hosts purvey” or from outside the United States, and noting that federal law already exempts “believers in some cases from having to comply with applicable laws.”[25]
In response to a petition which argued the Manhattan Declaration app promoted bigotry and homophobia, which received 7,000 signatures, Apple removed the app from iPhones and iPads, in November 2010, and later from iTunes.[26][27] Apple told CNN that the app had been removed because it “violates our developer guidelines by being offensive to large groups of people”.[27] The app had originally been rated by Apple as a +4, meaning that it contained no material deemed objectionable.[26][27]
A month later, organizers of the Manhattan Declaration resubmitted a modified version of the app.[28] The new version lacks a “quiz”, which, in the old version, had asked questions about political issues and assigned a score based on a set of normative answers.[29] As of December 10, 2010, more than 45,000 had signed a petition to have it reinstated.[28]Charles Colson voiced apprehension that Apple’s move could have negative implications for more Christian apps, stating: “There is nothing in the Manhattan Declaration that is not rooted in Scripture. So if that becomes the offense then all the other apps would be subject to the same charge.”[28][30]

The three appointees of former President Donald Trump have together sealed the Supreme Court’s conservatism for a generation, but they have revealed strikingly different methods. They diverge in their regard for practical consequences, their desire to lay down markers for future disputes and their show of internal rivalries.
Neil Gorsuch takes no prisoners. Brett Kavanaugh tries to appear conciliatory, even as he provokes internal conflict. And Amy Coney Barrett is holding her fire, for the moment.
Former President Donald Trump said Wednesday he won’t sign a pledge to support the Republican nominee if he loses the GOP presidential primary, flouting a requirement for appearing in the first debate later this month.
“Why would I sign it?” Trump said in an interview on the conservative cable network Newsmax. “I can name three or four people that I wouldn’t support for president. So right there, there’s a problem.”
“The federal government is out of control and does not represent the values of Texans. That is why I am committing to file legislation this session that will allow a referendum to give Texans a vote for the State of Texas to reassert its status as an independent nation,” Biedermann wrote.
The yet-untried idea stands astride the first two sections of the Texas Constitution for legal support. Article 1, Section 1 reads:
“Texas is a free and independent State, subject only to the Constitution of the United States, and the maintenance of our free institutions and the perpetuity of the Union depend upon the preservation of the right of local self-government, unimpaired to all the States.”
Section 2 guarantees the right of the citizenry to change or even scrap the state government.
“All political power is inherent in the people, and all free governments are founded on their authority, and instituted for their benefit. The faith of the people of Texas stands pledged to the preservation of a republican form of government, and, subject to this limitation only, they have at all times the inalienable right to alter, reform or abolish their government in such manner as they may think expedient,” Section 2 reads.
“Pursuant to Article 1, Section 1, of the Texas Constitution, the federal government has impaired our right of local self-government. Therefore, federally mandated legislation that infringes upon the 10th Amendment rights of Texas should be ignored, opposed, refused, and nullified,” the platform reads.
“Texas retains the right to secede from the United States should a future president and congress change our political system from a constitutional republic to any other system.”
State Rep. James White (R-Woodville) authored a bill in 2013 that would have “reaffirm[ed] the state’s sovereignty under the Texas Constitution and the Tenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States,” which Texas Nationalists among others saw as a first step towards secession. White’s bill included no referendum.
In a statement, Steube’s office said he filed the articles against the president for “for high crimes and misdemeanors.” The articles feature accusations of fraud, obstruction of justice and bribery stemming from allegations of illegal business dealings and tax crimes.
“It’s long past time to impeach Joe Biden,” Stebue said in the statement. “He has undermined the integrity of his office, brought disrepute on the Presidency, betrayed his trust as President, and acted in a manner subversive of the rule of law and justice at the expense of America’s citizens.”
Steube, who endorsed former President Donald Trump in his 2024 bid for the presidency in April, is joining him and other Florida U.S. House representatives at the Iowa State Fair this weekend. In his endorsement of Trump, he said the former president is the only person that can fix the “disastrous policies of the Biden administration.”
“He’s widely supported in my district, widely supported in Florida and I’m honored to add my endorsement to the long list of endorsements for President Trump,” Steube said in his announcement.
As California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) consider an in-person face-off this fall, strategists across the political spectrum see a shared opportunity for the governors to position themselves as the future of their respective bases.
While Newsom has for months been seeking to debate DeSantis — and both governors are notorious for slamming each other’s policies — only in the past couple weeks did plans for a televised tete-a-tete become semi-official. Newsom sent Fox News’s Sean Hannity an offer delineating his terms of participation at the end of July, after which DeSantis followed up with his own counterproposal.
The proposed debate comes as DeSantis struggles to gain traction against former President Trump in the Republican presidential primary after he was touted as a viable alternative to replace Trump as the party’s standard bearer.
Democrats say that Newsom, on the other hand, is increasingly being viewed as a leading candidate in the 2028 race or even as a possible alternative to President Biden if he quits the 2024 race.
“There is no downside at all for Newsom,” Daniel Schnur, a Republican-turned-Independent political strategist, told The Hill.
“If Biden does run for reelection next year, this is excellent national exposure for the future. If Biden were to step aside, Newsom will have positioned himself as a plausible successor,” said Schnur, who teaches political communications at several California universities.
“Either way, this is an immense boost to Newsom’s profile and will be of great benefit to him at some point,” he added.
Republicans say the debate provides an opportunity for both candidates.
