Gavin Newsom, the California governor, signed laws on Friday setting aside $50m to help the state protect its policies from challenges by the Trump administration and defend immigrants amid the president’s mass-deportation plans.
One of the laws allocates $25m for the state’s department of justice to fight legal battles against the federal government, and another sets aside $25m in part for legal groups to defend immigrants facing possible deportation. During his first presidency, Trump sparred with California over climate laws, water policy, immigrant rights and more, and the state filed or joined more than 100 legal actions against the administration. The same fights are re-emerging in the early days of Trump’s second term.

63 Russian Diplomats to be Expelled From Czech Republic as Sides Exchange Public Barbs

Czech Republic Foreign Minister Jakub Kulhanek said Thursday that Russia will have to limit its number of diplomats to the same number that the Czechs have at their embassy in Moscow.
All other diplomats will have to leave by the end of May, Kulhanek said. Sixty-three diplomats have been ordered to leave, the Associated Press reported.
The move escalates a dispute between the two nations that dates to 2014, when an ammunition depot exploded and Russian spies were alleged to be involved.

The ammunition suppliers taking part in the Czech-led initiative to provide Ukraine with artillery shells include “some allies of Russia,” the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported, citing unnamed Czech officials.
Czech President Petr Pavel said in February that Prague had identified 500,000 155 mm shells and 300,000 122 mm shells outside the European Union that could be bought and sent to Ukraine after the necessary funds were allocated to the initiative.
Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala said on March 12 that the initiative had secured the purchase of 300,000 shells and received nonbinding commitments for 200,000 more.
The Czech officials told WSJ that Prague had managed to utilize its good relations with many nations in the Global South that have large stockpiles of Soviet-era arms and the ability to produce more.
They did not specify which Russian allies were among the ammunition suppliers involved in the deal.
Similar requests by the U.S. and Western European countries to potential suppliers in Africa, Asia, and Latin America were previously rejected, according to Western officials cited by the media outlet.
Around 20 countries have so far joined the Czech-led initiative to help finance the delivery of ammunition. Germany has pledged over 500 million euros ($544 million), which is the biggest commitment among the participants, the Czech officials said.

Acting as a middleman, Czechia reportedly reached out to countries it knew had either the manufacturing capacity or compatible ammunition in storage and connected them with a Western country that would place an order and pay for shipping.
Czechia would then organize the logistics, with the supplies going either through its own borders or through third countries, covering any direct link between the country of origin and Ukraine so as not to reveal the supplier to Moscow, WSJ wrote.
“Confidentiality is key here: We talk and will talk to anyone, no matter what their allegiance or political stance is — with a very few exceptions, such as North Korea,” Tomas Pojar, the Czech government’s national security adviser, told the outlet.
The Czech initiative revealed a discrepancy between some governments’ public friendliness toward Russia and their openness to privately doing business with Ukraine’s allies, said Jan Jires, deputy minister of defense.
According to Fiala’s security advisor, Tomas Pojar, the ammunition rounds could start flowing to Ukraine by June.
Artillery shells are a crucial capability for Ukraine as the country faces critical ammunition shortages. Delays in U.S. military assistance, caused by disputes in Congress, have already had a direct impact on the battlefield, contributing to the loss of the key front-line city of Avdiivka.

WARSAW, Feb 22 (Reuters) – The Czech Republic has supplied hundreds of pieces of heavy military equipment to Ukraine over the past year, including 89 tanks, and will continue supporting efforts to aid Kyiv, the country’s prime minister said on Wednesday.
Petr Fiala was speaking after a meeting in Warsaw of countries on NATO’s eastern flank with U.S. President Joe Biden, who pledged to “defend every inch of NATO” to reassure allies nearly a year after Russia invaded Ukraine.
The Czech Republic has been one of Kyiv’s earliest and strongest backers.
Detailing for the first time the extent of Czech supplies, coming under cooperation of the state and the private sector, Fiala said the country had shipped 226 fighting and armoured infantry vehicles, 38 howitzers, 33 multiple rocket launchers, six air defence systems and four helicopters.

The U.S. embassy in Prague last week said the United States would provide $200 million to the Czech Republic for military upgrades and replacement of equipment sent to Ukraine.
The Czechs are also receiving Leopard 2A4 battle tanks from Germany as part of an international swap program to allow the flow of weapons to Ukraine.
The Czech Republic has also agreed to repair Ukraine’s armoured vehicles as part of it help to the country.

For several years I have been trying to bring to the attention of the Austrian Government the existence of the large canvas at the University of Oregon Museum titled ‘The Last Audience of the Habsburgs’ that was smuggled out of Austria. Alas, I have found just the right person. He is my kindred, Karl Schwarzenberg, who himself had to flee a oppressive regime. Karl opposes Putin, and backs Britain. I will contact him and see if he would like to come give a talk on this painting. His relative, Prince Felix Schwarzenberg, restored the Habsburg Empire.

Stefan Ein’s father was a member of the Nazi Party. When he came home at the end of World War Two, he took his infant son by his head, and hung him over a balcony, threatening to drop him. After hearing this two months ago, I pondered what was going through Mr. Ein’s mind. I conclude he was very disappointed Hitler lost the war, and, the Super Race Dream that his child represented. This boy became a living reminder, a symbol of utter failure. All hope is gone. The child must die with Hitler.
With Trump’s announcement he wants a new Cold War, we the people of the world have once again been taken hostage by nuclear terror, and we are dangling on the edge. Studies have been done on how much damage the nuclear threat is to the human psyche .Two months ago Stefan and I talked for an hour on the phone about the Habsburg painting at the Jordon Schnitzer Museum. He told me Austrian politics are very progressive, and thus the Austrians may no want this painting. In the last several days there is breaking news that Trump’s national security adviser, Michael T. Flynn, met with the leader of the Right-wing group that is giving new life to Nazi ideas.
As I type, the United Nations is about to vote on keeping Israel from building new settlements that were first built by Turnverein Jews, Fort-Eighters who fought the Habsburg army, and lost. The Turners fled to America and Palestine. There would be no Israel without the terror and mass murder Stefan’s father launched on the world. The Habsburg Law (Habsburgergesetz (in full, the Law concerning the Expulsion and the Takeover of the Assets of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine) Gesetz vom 3. April 1919 betreffend die Landesverweisung und die Übernahme des Vermögens des Hauses Habsburg-Lothringen) was a law originally passed by the Constitutional Assembly (Konstituierende Nationalversammlung) of the Republic of German-Austria, one of the successor states of dissolved Austria-Hungary, on 3 April 1919. The law legally dethroned the House of Habsburg-Lorraine as rulers of the country which had declared itself a republic on 12 November 1918, exiled them and confiscated their property. The Habsburg Law was repealed in 1935 and the Habsburg family was given back its property. However, in 1938, following the Anschluss, the Nazis reintroduced the Habsburg Law, and it was retained when Austria regained its independence after World War II.
