Commmunity invited to suggest names for three OSU buildings to be renamed
Benton Hall is one of the buildings being renamed after an extensive community-based process.
Following an extensive community-based process and a decision in November by President Ed Ray to change the names of three buildings, the OSU community and stakeholders are now being asked for naming suggestions to rename Benton Hall, Benton Annex and Avery Lodge.
“The names of buildings and places are very important. They help celebrate and acknowledge the university’s past and describe OSU priorities, such as student success, faculty excellence and research innovation,” said Steve Clark, chair of the OSU Architectural Naming Committee
And vice president for University Relations and Marketing. “Names recognize the positive contributions of people and communities associated with Oregon State. Building and place names portray OSU’s values and mission, including efforts to foster inclusivity, equity and success for all.”
A community meeting on new names will be held Monday, April 2, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Memorial Union Horizon Room. The university’s building name website includes a comment tool to submit naming recommendations online. As well, three committees, made up of faculty, staff and students, have been formed to help evaluate the proposed names and prepare a list of top choices to be considered.
These suggestions will be considered in mid-April by the university Architectural Naming Committee, which is responsible for making recommendations to President Ray regarding OSU building and place names. President Ray, who is charged by the OSU Board of Trustees to make such decisions, will announce the new names in late April.
In considering new names for these buildings, President Ray has said that he seeks:
* A name for Benton Hall that appropriately recognizes the many contributions of Benton County community residents in the 1860s and 70s that supported the founding of this university. This community support for higher education has continued for many years and remains strong today.
* A name for Benton Annex that appropriately recognizes the building as home to the Women’s Center, a valued student resource center.
In considering a new name for Avery Lodge, please think about names that portray a sense of the geography or place that OSU’s Corvallis campus has in the Willamette Valley; the university’s 150-year history as Oregon’s land grant and statewide university; or the building’s purpose. For example, Avery Lodge is home to the Family Resource Center, a childcare center, the Human Services Resource Center and University Housing and Dining Services administrative offices.
In addition to recommending new names to President Ray for these three buildings, the Architectural Naming Committee and university colleagues, including students, faculty and staff, will take next steps to:
* Develop and share with the OSU community, information about the history of these three buildings, as well as Arnold Dining Center and Gill Coliseum, whose building names also were reviewed last fall;
* Lead the university in gathering and documenting the history of all OSU buildings and their namesakes; and
* Create website information, mobile app information and permanent history displays for all university buildings.

A funny thing happened to me on the way to the Lane County Historical Society & Museum, I found the car John Belishi drove at the end of the movie ‘Animal House’. It is located inside a vintage warehouse located on Franklin Street a hundred yards from where a convention center is to be built. This building and about twelve homes were under the wrecking ball ten years ago when a company owned by Dubai royalty tried to buy up this property in order to build a hotel apartment complex. Five years ago I was introduced to Jim who owned a home on Brooklyn Street that Dubai and Sid Leiken wanted to buy – and tear down. Jim is an old Bohemian who along with his neighbors, asked a million dollars for his land. This nixed the deal with Dubai.
Now, the same plan is back under new names. There exist an extensive study made in 2006, paid for by the tax payers – that is being hidden. The Stakeholders were not summoned again to view the Son of Glenwood. I will be meeting with the archivest at the Lane Museum this morning. When I suggested she acquire Belushi’s car, she said there was no room for it. I told her this car would bring folks from all over the world to look at it, and thus, there would be visitors, verses, no visitors! The question I will be putting forth in my blogs for the next week, is.. Why build a convention/hotel complex using tax payers money, when there is nothing TO SEE when the out-of-towners get here, because our City Leaders keep tearing down, and throwing away, the NORMAL STUFF most folks want to city in other cities! My friend Kenny Reed appeared in a documentary about the making of Animal House, along with Izzy, a Merry Prankster.
What we got here is that classic movie where a town of Small People are being pushed around by a Big Developer who is backed by Oil Sheiks from Dubai who want to build a giant Crescent Moon with Star in the heart of Springtucky.

White Men And Their Great Families

An investigation needs to take place to see if a White Man was ever considered to replace another White Man, in the renaming of buildings located on our Colleges. If not, this constitutes abject Racism, and Iconoclasm! Two years ago I took steps to remove Joseph Lane from being honored in my County.
Senator Thomas Hart Benton was not a king, but a politician that was elected to serve five terms in the State of Missouri that sent thousands of Scot-Irish Immigrants to the Oregon Territory to secure it from rule by the King of England. If the democratic voters of Missouri did not like what Benton was selling, then they would have voted him out of office. Therefore, as a elected official, Benton is above being punished by a college President who rules like a Lord of the British Empire – his paying subjects!
Benton was the sole Proprietor of the Oregon Territory. The Benton Family was very close with the John Jacob Astor family who founded Astoria and held the monopoly of the fur trade – that hired Hawaiians due to a manpower shortage. Here is much of Benton’s commercial for Manifest Destiny. He was Astor’s attorney! Follow ‘The Money Trail’. Young people are vulnerable to the Guilt Trip Meisters who disempower White People. We need Voters, not bullshitters! Put it to a vote! What do the majority of U.S. Citizens think about the Renaming? Our taxes pay for these colleges. How many want to see the original names restored – because they do not want to empower a bunch of nameless Nobodies?

Alexander Webb is in my family tree. He was the Regent of the City College of New York. He won the Congressional Medal Honor for his Gallantry at the battle of Gettysburg. Webb helped put an end to the Treason of Robert E. Lee, who is also in my family tree. I suggest Alexander’s name and image replace all tributes to Lee. This suggestion, coming from a White Man who is kin to these men, is more acceptable, because there is no hidden racist agenda. CCNY was a progressive school. Joseph Webb helped found Yale. Alexander is related to William Shakespeare.
Alexander risked his life knowing he was fighting to set free Black slaves. On this day June 1, 2019, I found the Alexander Webb Collegiate History Society that will consist of a panel of white men and women, who will do extensive research, and ferret out racists and white supremist! The AWCHS will vote on new names for buildings.
The reason people of color will not be admitted to this society, is the contention one reads over and over again that White People are in denial, and own a innate racism, that does not allow them to police, and correct – past mistakes, transgressions, and trespasses. This resistance is welcomed by racist propagandists in order to draw more people to their cause and anarchist revolution. Surely every sane and honest person of color, will wish this society well.

My kindred, William Wilson, and his brother-in-law, Erasmus Webb may have known William Shakespeare – intimately! Anne (Webb) Wilson lived at Windsor Castle. Her brother, Erasmus, was the Archdeacon of Buckingham Palace. Are we looking at the authors of Shakespeare’s plays? Why has this family lineage been buried, and all but forgotten? These are extremely educated men, whose wives would be at court. They would know all the intrigues, and, hear confessions. They would know the merry wives of Windsor. People would bring them all the gossip that is the bane of the church, aimed at bringing other down as they vie for royal favors.

Today is the Day of Atonement. Six days after reading your discussion about changing the name of Lane County, I read that Sir Francis Drake offered Sir Ralph Lane one of his ships for further exploration of the Virginia Coast. If it were not for a hurricane, then the ancestors of Joeph Lane would be listed amongst the Explorers of the New World. Why doesn’t the State of Oregon own this history?
Joseph and Polly Lane are content to die in Roseburg – in obscurity! Did they hope the Lane Family history would die with them? Polly Lane married Nathaniel Hart after being rescued by the Thomas Hart family, who are my kin via Senator Thomas Hart Benton, who was the first proprietors of the Oregon Territory. His name was removed from a building on the campus of Oregon State – after a team of Historians ruled him a racist, a pro-slavery murderer of Native Americans – who invented Manifest Destiny. Wrong. Sir Ralph Lane sent a letter to Richard Hakluyt informing him of his written account of the Roanoke Colony. I suspect he bid Queen Elizabeth to establish a American Base for Pirates to deplete the Habsburg Empire of Incan and Aztec gold – that could have ended up buried on Oak Island. Drake gave Lane shallow draft boats after he returned from a raid.

It is alleged Drake brought The Golden Hind into a bay in Oregon. I am now looking at the real possibility that Drake drafted the English citizens of Roanoke to go on more raids. A hurricane came upon them when ships were being loaded for the voyage to England. Journals were thrown overboard, along with the valuable pearl the Native gave Lane. Really? The Roanoke Colony – vanished!
They say Drake was looking for The Fountain of Youth – also! What about sea route to India? Did Drake sail the Columbia that Lewis and Clark Explored? Did the Queen’s Knight found a colony in Oregon – that Joseph Lane learned about, when he was a mere boy? Why did Polk appoint Lane the first governor of Oregon? Why wasn’t he elected? England was making claims to Oregon. Did they know the history of Ralph Lane – and Richard Hakluyt? England was going to come to the aid of the Confederacy. What if General Lee – won? I am kin to Lee, the Virgina General. Did his family know the history of Sir Ralph Lane, and, they had their eye on the Oregon Territory? The British have good – and long memories. A Lord, is a land owner. These knights were given permission to grab all lands – not owned by a Christian!
On this day, October 4, 2022, I beseech the City Club of Eugene help me find funding for my mountainous study. I see a team of nine people. From coast to coast, the Lane family fought a war against Native Americans. Let us establish an accurate record of this – once and for all! The black woman that took over the Oregon Shakespeare festival has misused this history – in my opinion. Two years ago I founded the Oregon Shakespeare Society because I am kin to the Bard via the Webb family who came over with the Pilgrims. I began a story of the colony they founded. Yes, and as a minister of the Radio Church of God, founded by Herbert Armstrong, I have proven this. Consider….Elijah’s Chair, and that it was John who spoke when he was eight days old.
Many loyal Americans are asking that Republicans speak up – and condemn Trump – who will not concede. His racist threat against McConnel and Elaine Chow was typical of the language used against Native Americans – and Chinese immigrants. The death threat is typical, too, aimed at whites who were on the cusp, and did not want to go along with the Extermination plan. I demand Franklin Graham condemn Trump, the same way he condemned the present Governor of Oregon. Graham said Brown did not know Jesus, and, was not a Christian. He used Brown when he came to our State to garnish Christian votes for the Republican Party – only! I became a Republican twelve years ago because my kin, John Fremon, founded the Abolitionist party that has been taken over by neo-Confederates!

Sir Ralph Lane (ca. 1530-October 1603), first governor of “Virginia,” was born in Lympstone, Devonshire, England, the son of Sir Ralph Lane (d. 1541) and his wife Maud Parr (daughter of William Lord Parr) of Northamptonshire. He is believed to have been a cousin of Edward Dyer, the poet. In 1563 he entered the service of Queen Elizabeth I as equerry and did a variety of court tasks, including searching Breton ships for illegal goods in 1571. In general, however, Lane was better suited as a soldier than as a courtier. After Grenville departed for England in August, the colony moved to Roanoke Island where it remained for the next eight months. As supplies became scarce, the colony was plagued with bickering and quarrels among its members and with the natives. Lane reportedly was not diplomatic in dealing with the Indians and often reacted violently to provocation. He quarreled with Wingina, an Indian chief, who was attempting to organize neighboring tribes to attack Lane’s group. Lane solved this problem by killing Wingina on 10 June 1586 before the surrounding tribes convened and then managed to disperse the rest of the group. The next day, 11 June, Sir Francis Drake arrived and promised to leave men, supplies, and a ship. However, a hurricane blew the ship out to sea and plans were changed. Lane, discouraged, decided to return to England. In the frenzied rush to be gone, three colonists, exploring up-country, were left behind, and in an effort to lighten the ship’s load, valuable records were destroyed or thrown over-board. Lane returned to England on 27 July 1586 and never again commanded a colonial expedition, probably to the benefit of everyone. Ironically, Grenville’s relief squadron arrived shortly after Drake sailed for home, causing widespread criticism of Lane for leaving Virginia when he did. It has even been suggested that Lane’s distrust of Grenville led to his abandoning the colony.
It is thought (without much proof) that Lane was the first to introduce tobacco to England. Following his return, Lane set down a “Discourse on the First Colony,” which was sent to Sir Walter Raleigh and later printed in Richard Hakluyt’s Principall Navigations (1589). Afterwards, Lane wrote another treatise on his experiences as a colonial commander and sent it to Lord Burghley on 7 Jan. 1592. In it he emphasized the need for strict discipline to avoid illness among the soldiers.
Among the colonists of this Virginia expedition were John White, an artist, and Thomas Harriot, a mathematician, who took meticulous notes and made remarkably accurate drawings of the wildlife, fauna, and natives of the New World. These efforts have been preserved in their book, A briefe and true report of the new found land of Virginia, published in 1588 and 1590. Lane wrote the foreword to this book.
After Lane’s return to England, he performed a series of petty tasks for the court, including in 1588 the office of muster-master of the camp at West Tilbury in Essex and the next year as muster-master general of the army on the Spanish and Portuguese coast. In January 1592 he took the post of muster-master general and clerk of the check in Ireland. He remained in that country for the rest of his life.
Lane apparently never married but continued, as he had throughout his career, to beg favors from the well-placed for himself and his relatives. On 15 Oct. 1593 he was knighted by the lord deputy of Ireland, Sir William Fitzwilliam. In 1594 Lane was badly wounded in an Irish rebellion. He never regained his strength and his office was generally neglected during the last years of his life. Edward E. Hale summed up his career: “He seems to have been an eager courtier, a bold soldier, a good disciplinarian, an incompetent governor, a credulous adventurer, and on the whole, though not a worthless, an unsuccessful man.”

The past few months have been an absolute nightmare for Harvard University.
Lawmakers and regulators are investigating. Donors are revolting. Early applications are down. And the Harvard board’s handpicked leader, Claudine Gay, just ended the shortest presidency in the university’s nearly 400-year history amid a firestorm of controversy.
Now, scrutiny is turning to how the Harvard Corporation, the powerful yet secretive board that runs the university, allowed this all to go so badly.

Management expert Jeffrey Sonnenfeld argues Harvard’s top board deserves a failing grade — and is calling for its members to be removed or step down.
“They have damaged the brand significantly. So, they deserve, generously, a D,” Sonnenfeld, a Yale professor and Harvard graduate, told CNN on Wednesday.
No board would have had an easy time contending with the historic challenges facing Harvard right now, from alleged antisemitism on campus to a plagiarism scandal facing its leader.
Yet the Harvard Corporation’s stunning 180 — going from unanimously backing Gay to accepting her resignation, in the span of just three weeks — does raise questions about what went wrong.
‘Tone-deaf to criticism’
Faced with allegations of plagiarism against Gay, the Harvard Corporation did launch an independent review — but it was lightning-fast.
Normally, such reviews into plagiarism charges can take anywhere from six months to two years. This one lasted less than two months.
In hindsight, the review was also incomplete, focusing only on Gay’s published works and writings, not her PhD dissertation that later found to be lacking citations.
“They were running cover for her, which is a bad board instinct,” Sonnenfeld said, drawing parallels to boards during infamous corporate scandals at Enron, WorldCom and Tyco. “Harvard is, of course, a national treasure. For them to be so tone-deaf to criticism was remarkable.”

Despite the enormous power the Corporation wields running one of America’s most prestigious universities, the board typically makes decisions behind closed doors with little transparency.
Today the Corporation is led by Penny Pritzker, the billionaire former Obama Cabinet secretary, and its members include former American Express CEO Ken Chenault, Chicago investor Paul Finnegan and Amherst College President Biddy Martin.
Pritzker has been notably silent, choosing to allow the Corporation’s broad statements speak instead of issuing a statement of her own. She continued that strategy even as the firestorm surrounding Gay’s disastrous Congressional hearing and her writings intensified.
“That silence was deafening,” Sonnenfeld said.
‘Leadership and governance failures’
There are also questions about whether the Harvard Corporation did its homework on Gay before hiring her following a speedy search process.
“I do think the relatively hasty action by the Corporation in the search process indicated to me that not a full review was made of qualified candidates who are out there,” Harvard donor Peter Malkin told The Harvard Crimson.
Malkin, the namesake of the Malkin Athletic Center, told the school paper that members of the Corporation who selected Gay should step down.
The issue of who is on the board is no small matter. It will be up to those members of the Harvard Corporation to decide who will be best to replace Gay and clean up the mess.
Sam Lessin, a venture capitalist and former Facebook executive, told CNN Pritzker should resign and the Corporation needs to become “way more” transparent. Lessin, who is attempting to run for another university board, the Harvard Board of Overseers, argued Gay’s resignation is the beginning, not the end.
“It is a first step that demonstrates that Harvard is not lost, and can change,” said Lessin. “Harvard still needs to address the deeper leadership and governance failures that came to a head this fall.”
A Harvard spokesperson declined to comment on the criticism.
The Harvard Corporation issued a statement on Tuesday saying it has accepted Gay’s resignation “with sorrow.”
“These past several months have seen Harvard and higher education face a series of sustained and unprecedented challenges,” The Harvard Corporation said. “In the face of escalating controversy and conflict, President Gay and the Fellows have sought to be guided by the best interests of the institution whose future progress and well-being we are together committed to uphold.”
The Corporation said the search for a new president will begin in “due course” and vowed the process will include “broad engagement and consultation” with the Harvard community.
It’s clear that the search for a new Harvard president will be a crucial one in this moment of tumult. What’s less clear is who exactly will be leading that search.

Critical race theory (CRT) is an interdisciplinary academic field devoted to analysing how social and political laws and media shape (and are shaped by) social conceptions of race and ethnicity. An example questioning foundational liberal conceptions of Enlightenment values, such as rationalism and progress, is Rennard Strickland‘s 1986 Kansas Law Review article, “Genocide-at-Law: An Historic and Contemporary View of the Native American Experience”. He wrote that US laws that “permeate” the everyday lives of Native Americans were in “most cases carried out with scrupulous legality” but still resulted in what he called “cultural genocide”.[44]
The Radical Republicans (later also known as “Stalwarts“[5][6]) were a faction within the Republican Party originating from the party’s founding in 1854—some six years before the Civil War—until the Compromise of 1877, which effectively ended Reconstruction. They called themselves “Radicals” because of their goal of immediate, complete, and permanent eradication of slavery in the United States. South Africa’s 84-page filing says Israel’s actions “are genocidal in character because they are intended to bring about the destruction of a substantial part” of the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
It asks the ICJ, also known as the World Court, for a series of legally binding rulings. It wants the court to declare that Israel “has breached and continues to breach its obligations under the Genocide Convention,” and to order Israel to cease hostilities in Gaza that could amount to breaches of the convention, to offer reparations and to provide for reconstruction of what it has destroyed in Gaza.
