The updated figures emerged after Victoria Atkins, the financial secretary to the Treasury, had told Sky News it was a “very, very fast-moving situation” and that she understood the number of British citizens killed to be 10, with six being held.
The prime minister’s official spokesperson later told reporters: “To clarify, as I think the minister did herself later on, we can confirm at least 12 British nationals were tragically killed in last week’s terrorist attacks.
“A further five British nationals are missing.” He said he could “not be more specific” on the number of UK nationals the government thought could be being held by Hamas.
London-based Sharone Lifschitz, who flew to Tel Aviv after her mother, Yocheved Lifshitz, 85, was one of two hostages released by Palestinian militants on Monday night, said her father, Oded, 83, was still missing. Of her mother, she told the BBC: “She seems OK.”
Footage showed that as her mother was handed over to the Red Cross by one of her captors, she briefly turned to shake his hand and said “shalom”, Hebrew for “peace”.
Her daughter told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “I’m so proud of her – she is amazing. Just the way she walked off and came back and said thank you was quite incredible to me. It’s so her.”

The Ironclad Oath was an oath promoted by Radical Republicans and opposed by President Abraham Lincoln during the American Civil War. The Republicans intended to prevent political activity of ex-Confederate soldiers and supporters by requiring all voters and officials to swear they had never supported the Confederacy. The Virtue of Nationalism is a 2018 book by Israeli-American political activist Yoram Hazony.

Hazony argues that the nation state is the best form of government that humans have yet invented, contrasting both with historical empires and modern forms of global governance including United Nations affiliated institutions such as the International Court of Justice.[1][2] In particular, Hazony argues that nationalism uniquely provides, “the collective right of a free people to rule themselves.”[2]
According to Hazony, national identity is based not on race or biological homogeneity, but on “bonds of mutual loyalty” to a shared culture and a shared history that bind diverse groups into a national unit.[3] Hazony argues that the social cohesion enabled by a nation-state where a common language and history are shared by the majority of the population can produce a level of trust that enables the production of social and moral goods, such as civil and political liberties.[4][5][3]
He argues that because, in contrast with systems like the European Union where member states are bound by measures taken by the Union, each nation state sets up unique systems, standards and administrative procedures, effectively producing a series of experiments that other nation states can freely copy as they strive for improvement.[2][1]
And he asserts that it is a matter of historical fact that the rights and freedoms of individuals have been protected best by nation-states, especially in England and in the United States. This, in Hazony’s view, contrasts sharply with attempts at “universal political order . . . in which a single standard of right is held to be in force everywhere, tolerance for diverse political and religious standpoints must necessarily decline.”[2] Hazony argues that globalizing politically progressive elites have promoted a “global rule of law” that is intolerant of cultural differences, of patriotism, and of religious faith.[2] Hazony writes that globalists promulgate “anti-nationalist hate,” and are aggressively intolerant of cultural particularism.[2] In Hazony’s words, “liberal internationalism is not merely a positive agenda. . . . It is an imperialist ideology that incites against . . . nationalists, seeking their delegitimization wherever they appear.”[2]
Israel and the European Union[edit]
In a juxtaposition that book reviewer Ira Stoll describes as the book’s “strongest case,” for nationalism Hazony discusses the conflicting understanding held by Europeans and by Israelis.[1]
In November 1942, as word seeped out of Europe about mass killings of Jewish families, Israel’s founding Prime Minister Ben Gurion said that Jews were being “buried alive in graves dug by them,… because the Jews have no political standing, no Jewish army, no Jewish independence, and no homeland.”[1]
The consensus view in Europe is that the Holocaust was caused by German nationalism. Therefore, in Hazony’s words, “It is not Israel that is the answer to the Holocaust, but the European Union.”[1]
Hazony describes the Nazism of the Third Reich as both a distinctive form both of imperialism and of racial supremacism. He states that what the Jews lacked was a Jewish state in which they could have sought refuge. The consensus view among Israelis is that Israel is the most effective response to the Holocaust.[1][2]
Critical reception[edit]
John Fonte, writing in the National Review, described Virtue as a book “that will become a classic.”[2] In February 2019, the book won the Paolucci Book Award from the Intercollegiate Studies Institute.[6]
Reviewing the book for The New York Times, Justin Vogt called Hazony’s narrative a, “reductive approach (that) poses a false choice between an idealized order of noble sovereign nations and a totalitarian global government.” In Vogt’s opinion, “The world could use a less moralistic, more nuanced defense of nationalism. This book is a missed opportunity.”[7] In that vein, critics of the book largely faulted Hazony’s use of terms and categorizations. For instance, one review by Park MacDougald for New York magazine’s the Intelligencer commented: “The book’s major flaw is that Hazony tends to define his terms as ideal types and then argue from those definitions.”[8] Likewise, another review by George Washington University professor Samuel Goldman in Modern Age stated that Hazony’s argument “rests on a confusing and counterproductive use of terms.”[9]
Some reviewers commented that Hazony’s theory and defense of nationalism does not appear to take into account the historical body of nationalist thought, possibly to make his position more palatable to his readership. [10][11] For instance, an essay by Michael Shindler in Jacobite, notes that Hazony’s theory is heavily derived from recent scholarship from Israel and the anglosphere (particularly Fania Oz-Salzberger’s ‘The Jewish Roots of Western Freedom,’ and Philip Gorski’s The Mosaic Moment), which depicts “nationalism as a descendant of the biblical Israeli model,” as opposed to the “robust body of nationalist theory that’s been developing since the 19th century.” This lack of engagement, Shindler claims, is “conspicuous” since that body of literature, though it is “quite cogent…admits that nationalism is culpable of precisely what it is accused of by its liberal critics.”[12]

In the Shadow of the CIA: Liberalism’s Big Embarrassing Moment

The death of Warren Hinckle, a journalist long forgotten outside San Francisco, brings back Ramparts magazine’s crowning moment, also one of crucial moments of postwar liberalism. At a stroke, in March, 1967, the presumptions of innocence by purportedly freedom-loving (albeit hawkish) prestigious intellectuals were stripped off. It turned out that the grand banquets and conferences with literary-and-other luminaries, the New York Times-reported cocktail parties, indeed the whole egghead-celebrity thing, was at base a CIA operation called, without irony, the Congress for Cultural Freedom. The list of collaborators was a long one, but Mary McCarthy, Irving Kristol, Leslie Fiedler, Dwight Macdonald, Sidney Hook and the Trillings, Diana and Lionel, among the most famous Americans, with European stars including Isaiah Berlin and Arthur Koestler at the top (Hannah Arendt in both categories). The Partisan Review, Encounter and a considerable stream of literary or quasi-literary journals existed, as it turned out, with the help of intelligence-agency donations.
The operation had been established at the down of the 1950s with CIA executive Cord Meyer, and a youngish intellectual very much in the news, Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., whose original, brainy scheme it may have been. Intellectuals and artists guilty of opposing fascism “too early” and supporting the Soviet Union in the present or past offered another considerable list including some of Hollywood’s most talented writers and directors, also a handful of its stars (Lucille Ball might be the best remembered today), also musicians, singers, painters, novelists and most mortifying to some critics, the day’s leading playwright, Arthur Miller. The CIA’s precursor body, full of leftwingers, had been ushered out of existence as the intelligence operation shifted from anti-fascist and slightly pro-communist to anti-communist and to the same degree, pro-fascist (or supportive of repressive anti-communist regimes). The guilty had to be finished off, in the ongoing Cold War, and McCarthyism had not finished the job.
The 1950s offered plenty of opportunities for intellectuals and artists to curse Russian misdeeds, but a rather large number of opportunities for criticism of US actions as the overthrow of the Guatemalan government and the near-genocidal civilian massacres shortly to follow. Americans were called upon to gird their loins. They were also selectively offered all expense-paid junkets with, four star hotels, five star restaurants, and plenty of associated glamor. Better than that, or at least more lasting, were the contacts useful for lucrative book contracts and warm reviews in the big publications.
It might have gone on for decades longer, if not for the Vietnam War, which most of leading intellectuals in the operation came to view as an unfortunate but understandable mistake in judgment. A handful, including Dwight Macdonald, actually rejoined the dissenters, and in his case, humiliated a small crowd around him attending a White House dinner by asking for petition signatures against the war. Ramparts’ revelations began with the National Student Association (NSA), a mostly reform-minded student group whose “witty” leaders carried out orders and cashed checks of origins unknown to members. As the scandal spread, CIA officials went public, confessing to deep ties not only to student groups but also to the AFL-CIO, whose leaders had heretofore denied any CIA funding for activities among leading unionists in the UK and across Europe, not to mention the rest of the world.
The ripples of the Ramparts revelations spread outward, with mostly hypocritical denials of knowledge by this or that participant. Some, like Arendt (whose totemic Origins of Totalitarianism had actually been funded by the Agency) made fun of the Congress members’ pomposity while enjoying the lavish accommodations in a palace on Lake Como, Italy. An American counterpart to the CCF, the Committee for Cultural Freedom, shut down in embarrassment, although Schlesinger managed a transfer of funds and the franchise of the CCF to the smaller International Association for Cultural Freedom, which finally shut its doors in 1979.
Is all this far in the past, a mere historical footnote? The widely-reported style of the Clinton Campaign, reporters kept at a distance with doors and windows shut while HRC addresses her donors, has a suspicious familiarity. So does the very character of the celebrity sheen, the carefully chosen famous important enough to be brought up to the stage, trusted enough not to object to…the newest versions of hawkish Cold War liberalism.
What lies ahead for these intellectuals and celebs is, first of all, White House photo-ops, and very possibly “Freedom” awards of assorted kinds. But there’s another future, around the corner, when the next Vietnam (or Guatemala) becomes the source of quiet State Department calls for declarations of loyalty. Secrecy and loyalty to the regime: as important to liberalism as to the Right, and perhaps more important. A world to be conquered, no matter how many victims, in the name of high ideals.
