Rose Weavers of Kobane

Here is my prophetic post made March 6, 2015. I did not know Henry Buck had an office in Eugene Oregon. The money Henry made cutting down our trees, gave birth to all the Buck Foundations. Rubar Sandi became a member of the board of directors of the Buck Institute two years ago. I was a member of several Kurdish facebook group were I contributed my religious-atheist knowledge in forming a Kurdish State. In my book, you can take God-Allah, or leave Him. Most religion is obtuse history about THE PROPHETS. It stands to reason if we are living in THE AGE OF THE PROPHET, then it is not just a history lesson.

I have been into play-acting since I can remember. I am a Magical Being. Prophets are playful. Sometimes we are deadly serious. Above is a photo of me with the cremated remains of my homeless friend I adopted because we could not find his family. I paid for his funeral as his Go-el Redeemer. I put Hollis Williams ashes in the woods up the McKenzie where Frank Buck’s men fell great trees – our Ents! That is the McKenzie River over my shoulder.

It is time the Kurds read my book. I will not be silenced again. The Magic will no longer be torn from my being by ‘The Lovers of Money’. The Rose Tapestry is being woven. It will cover the World in roses!

I will send this post to Rubar Sandi. The Kurdish People are homeless.

Jon ‘The Nazarite’

This morning I awoke with the idea of Eugene Oregon becoming the sister city of Kobane. The connections I made with Meher Baba and the Kurds has put me in a unique position. I have made Kurdish friends. I must act, because I and these friends are caught in a no man’s land, being, we are people of peace, but, we have been chosen to fight the people of darkness and violence. Women, sisters, are at the vanguard of this battle that the enemy wants to be the battle of Armageddon. But, I see peace arriving with each victory that brings one closer to the lightThis morning I found a video showing the distaffs of the Kurdish women. The women fighters are seen behind the colorful threads. The Rosamond cote of arms depicts a distaff that looks like a cross. This is emblem the Rosamond/Rougemont Knights Templar wore on their tunic when they went on crusade. You can see this distaff with two camels outside a Templar church. I have proven the Rougemont Templars owned the Shroud of Turin the most famous piece of cloth in the world. The Rosamond family descend from weavers.

According to institute insiders who requested anonymity, some faculty members expressed unease about a few of the associations made during this period.

Two men added to the institute’s board of trustees in particular raised concerns: Fouad Makhzoumi, a Lebanese native and CEO of Future Group, who joined the board in 2014; and Rubar Sandi, chairman of the Sandi Group, who joined the board in 2015. Sandi is an Iraqi from a wealthy Kurdish family who immigrated to the United States in the late 1970s.

The Sandi Group’s work with Texas-based DynCorp has been investigated by the special inspector general for Iraq reconstruction, according to David Phinney, a Washington, D.C.-based freelance reporter whose work includes a series on contractors and private military companies working in Iraq.

Rubar Sandi of the Eastern Star Prophecy

PREFACE:  I just got off the phone with Safia of the Buck Foundation. I basically told her I own a jewel encrusted glass slipper, and, was wondering if there are any feet to put it on.  I commented on the irony of her name, and, she had an accent. I asked if she saw the movie ‘The DaVinci Code’. She had. I told her the architect, Pei, designed the pyramid over the Louvre, and there is a prophecy going on. I told her the Knights Templar were in one of my proposals. Here is Rubar Sandi’s main business.

http://www.thesandigroup.com/security.html

“Rubar Sandi, a Kurdish American, who was forced to flee Iraq after Saddam killed members of Rubar’s family, was one of the first back into Iraq after the invasion took place. In the thirty years, or so since Rubar came to America, he became a U.S. citizen and seized the American dream. Rubar became very successful through his own hard work, ingenuity, faith and willingness to stand on certain principles of personal integrity, honesty, loyalty to his friends and sheer determination. Rubar has experienced the American dream we all seek, but he never forgot his Kurdish home in Iraq, or the friends and family he left behind in the Northern area of Iraq known as Kurdistan. ”

For a year I have been tempted to found a Templar Order. With the egregious trespass by Benjamin Netanyahu, instigated by alleged Christians who want to go on another Crusade, I envision a Templar order of women only. These women will always keep their eye on the prize, which is the return of peace, where the gun is laid down, and the distaff put to use again, to clothe ‘The Woman of the World’ in a garden of red roses.

I went back to sleep and had a dream I was an elder speaking to young people about being able to see into the future. I just got off the phone with a woman member of the Nez Perce Tribe. I asked if her tribe recognizes the plight of other peoples and she said they have so many problems. Chief White Bird was a Dreamer/Prophet.

Then I found the MLKP who have ties to the movie ‘Pan’s Labyrinth.

Melanie was a follower of Meher Baba who was a Avatar associated with the Kurds. She sang at Woodstock, and later wrote a song about her experience. I see the women fighters of the YPJ and YPG singing this song because I read an account of how confined they were in their fight against ISIS. Surrounded, they……..

“We were so close, there was no room
We bled inside each other’s wounds”

The YPJ currently has over 7,000 volunteer fighters between the ages of 18-40. Those under the age of 18 are unable to take part in frontline fighting but are still able to join the movement and undergo military training. They receive no funding from the international community and the women are reliant on the Kurdish community for supplies and food.

“The YPG is composed of men and women from communities across the Kurdish region of Syria. The YPG considers itself a democratic people’s army and conducts internal elections as a method of appointing officers.[9] Though predominantly Kurdish, the group has attracted increasing numbers of Arabs, including fighters defecting from the mainstream opposition[10] as well as locals from mixed or Arab villages in YPG-controlled territory who see the group as the best guarantor of regional security;[11] a number of non-Kurdish Christians also fight in YPG ranks, and the militia has close ties to the Assyrian/Syriac Sutoro and Syriac Military Council. They are known for their large number of women fighters.”

Lay down, lay down, lay it all down
Let your white birds smile
At the ones who stand and frown

Lay down, lay down, lay it all down
Let your white birds smile
At the ones who stand and frown

We were so close, there was no room
We bled inside each other’s wounds
We all had caught the same disease
And we all sang the songs of peace

Lay down, lay down, lay it all down
Let your white birds smile
At the ones who stand and frown

Lay down, lay down, lay it all down
Let your white birds smile
At the ones who stand and frown

So raise candles high
‘Cause if you don’t we could stay black against the night
Oh, raise them higher again
And if you do we could stay dry against the rain

Lay down, lay down, lay it all down
Let your white birds smile
At the ones who stand and frown

Lay down, lay down, lay it all down
Let your white birds smile
At the ones who stand and frown

We were so close, there was no room
We bled inside each other’s wounds
We all had caught the same disease
And we all sang the songs of peace

Some came to sing, some came to pray
Some came to keep the dark away

So raise candles high
‘Cause if you don’t we could stay black against the sky
Oh, oh, raise them higher again
And if you do we could stay dry against the rain

Lay down, lay down, lay it all down
Let your white birds smile
At the ones who stand and frown

Lay down, lay down, lay it all down

Come to Rose Mountain

by Jon Presco

The Ark upon the mountain
The Dove and Branch upon the sea
The hammers of iniquity
beat upon my forgotten tomb
I am awake upon the turbulant waters
My enemies cast lots
and blame me for their sins
while God’s friends
read me on the Day of Atonement
so all will be saved
so all will be united in peace
The sun went down on me
so long ago
The vine that grew over my head
has wilted in the desert of forgetfulness
But, there on a mountian
a purple haze
a rosy afterglow
in a King’s rosegarden atop a mount
that bid noble knights to climb hither
that beckon knights to sever a thread
and once again
be brave

For a month I have been asking Kurds and Jews what there connection is. I finally found time to look for myself, and, I have found what I have been seeking for twenty-seven years. For fifteen years I have been following the Star on the crowns of the Comet Kings who have led  me to Kurdistan where a battle between good and evil is taking place. Since 1967 I have been a follower of Meher Baba whose father was a Dervish and a Sufi teacher. Baba founded a restored Sufi order in California.

I have arrived at the end of my very long novel ‘Capturing Beauty’ that I hope will form a bond between Baba Lovers around the world, and the brave Kurdish People who I believe have been anointed by the Avatar to dissolve the last attempt of the Darkness to overcome the world.  Here is the connection the Kurdish People have been wanting with the United States of America, who has come to rescue of the defenders of Kobane. I will be linking the fight of the Kurdish Patriots to the Patriots in my family tree.

Since December 22nd I have posted a true prophecy. From Baba’s castle in Iran, I wondered if the Parthian Magi looked at the stars high in the mountains. The next day, comet Lovejoy appear in the heavens on December 23rd. I then posted on the Parthians war against Rome for the temple, the sons of Queen Helena of Adiabene, fighting along Jewish Saints and Nazarites, killing Roman troops because their mother was a famous Nazarite who gifted the Temple with a large golden Menorah, and golden words on the judged of Sotah, the woman accused of adultery.

Two days ago I blogged on the study that says Pharamond was the grandson of a Parthian, who married Rosamond, and begat the Merovingian Long-haired Kings of France, who some say are kindred of Mary Magdalene and Jesus, who fled to France. The Rosamond name will forever be associated with this legend of Mary Magdalene, and Mary, the mother of Jesus, who is sometimes called ‘The Rose of the World’.

On December 23, at 7:26 A.M. I found this essay that says Joachem and Anna, the parents of Mary, are the Parthian Prince Nakeb Adiabene, and his wife, Parthian Princess Grapte Kharax. They pray to the God of the Jews for a child, for Grapte’s womb has been shut. This is the Nazarite birth of Hanah and Elizabeth. Did this royal coupl eof Adiabene take the vow of the Nazarite, as did Queen Helena of Adiabene. Has the hidden truth been reborn this day?

“A Jewish merchant named Ananias, from whom the couple had bought much jewelry—among other wares—convinced the royal couple to convert to Judaism, and to pray to the god of the Jews (Yahweh, Jehovah), “who will surely bless them with an offspring.” The persuasion was successful, and Prince Adiabene is given the name Joachim in the Jewish religion, and his wife becomes Anna.”

I have been called mad, and forsaken by my family. I do not know if this essay speaks the truth. What I do know, is, I was childless, and then God gifted me with a child – after I took the vow of the Nazarite.

Here is a post made October 3, 2011

The Rosenmund cote of arms contains a cross. Only a family that went on crusade can put a cross on their shield. This cross is made up of a weaving hook, according to the Rosamond family genealogists, and was worn as a tunic pin by the Rougemont Crusaders. What this cross is, is a spindle. The Knights Templar of Fontenotte had a spindle on the marker outside their chapel where in the place of roses, they have two camels that represent the Outremer, the Kingdom of God that was lost to Islam. It is time to awaken that kingdom from a long sleep.

The Templar cross is a spindle viewed from the top. We see it laid down on the monument. This is my revelation after attending a weavers convention at the Lane County fairgrounds where I saw a spindle that looked like a cross. I talked to an expert who was present, and he said this cross design had been around before the Crusades. This is evidence my Rosamond/Rougemont ancestors were Knights Templar.

Grimms named Briar Rose, Rosamond. She is pricked by a spindle and falls asleep. Her father’s kingdom falls asleep with her.

My grandfather, Royal Rosamond, was born of two roses, William Thomas Rosamond, and Ida Louisiana Rose. My mother was Rosemary Rosamond. Her mother was Mary Magdalene Rosamond. My late sister was Christine Rosamond Benton.

Gottschalk Rosemont gifted the Vatican with a large building that contained the weavers guilds of the Netherlands. This became Leuvain College where his grandson was master. Gottschalk Rosemont was the master of Falcom Art College, and wrote a book ‘Confessionals’ that he signed with the image of a rose, that is the same rose the Royal Family of Holland wear, but, in full bloom. This is the emblem of the Swan Brethren.

Above is the Rosamond cote of arms that has a cross made of a weavers needle on a mount with two flowers. You can not have a cross in your cote of arms unless your kindred went on crusade. Did the Lords of Rougemont and Florimont go on Crusade? I believe they went as Knights Templar.

The Rosamond family were weavers for countless generations. Surely we took interest in the story of Sleeping Beauty. Perhaps, it is a family yarn whose woof and weave connects us to the bloodline of the Swan Knight? Hans Ulrich Rosemond was a weaver. Ulrich means “wolf ruler’, and Hans is John.

A month into World War Two, German troops entered the city of Louvain and utterly destroyed it because freedom fighter were allegedly sniping at the Kaizer’s men. Atrocities were committed. Nuns were stripped naked in search of weapons. Citizens were herded off to concecration camps. Louvain College was burned to the ground along with four Art Colleges. One of them was the Falcon Art College of which my ancestor Godeschald Rosemondt was the Master. Was his artwork lost in the flames?
Above is a photo of Rosemondt’s book that he signs with a Rose and Mont. There is a Habsburg cote of arms and a emplem for the Falcon College. The Rosemondts were members of the Swan Brethren who wore a pen of a closed rose surrounded by thorns.

Here is the story of the Sleeping Beauty Princess named Rosamond and a beautiful city full of Artists and Thinkers that is destroyed because of the Kulturekumpf (cutlure war) The Kaizer is waging against Catholics. Louvain is a famous Cathlic University that was established in a Weaver’s Hall donated by another Godeschalk Rosemondt. Losing a Weaver’s Rebellion, many weaver families fled to England.

I just found out about the destruction of Louvain this morning. I believe much of the Rosemondt Family history was lost. I believe I was born to raise it from the ashes. I am The Rose of the World.
The cote of arms of Louvain depicts a open book with empty pages. Consider the Faun showing Ofelia the book of the Crossroads – the Rose Crossroads. The Louvain atrocity preceeds the atrocities of Franco against the Freedom Fighters of Spain, and the Jews of Germany. Louvain was a portal into the future, a bell that sounded a warning.

A Seer said I go each knight to a place the Rosicrucians discovered called ‘The Catherdral of the Souls’ where I have a reserved seat at a great wooden table. There is a hood figure standing behind because I am……..The One.

Awake and rise my dear Roses! Arise!

“Peter Rosemond further reported information from the Records Office in Basle that “before Basle the family resided in Holland up to 1338, and it is said they descended from the estate Rosemont, near Belfort, in France, where also the village Rougemont is found.”

A family coat-of-arms was registered in Basle about 1537 when the first Hans became a resident there. A reproduction of this coat-of-arms in the writer’s possession shows a weaver’s crook conspicuously, and it will be remembered that in Ireland our people were linen weavers and farmers, and that Edward, the elder, was a weaver in this country. Peter Rosemond had seen in print the letters from Erasmus to Gotschalk Rosemondt. He noticed that a seal used by a Rosemont in Holland, bearing a jumping fox,
was like an emblem he had noticed in a wall of the house Rebleuten-
Zunft in Basle. This seal dated back to 1430, whereas the coat-of-
arms above mentioned dates from 1534, it seems.

Join us in solidarity with the people of Kobane and their struggle to hold on to their city, their lives, and their livelihoods. Please gather Tuesdays at 6 p.m. to 8pm to show your support of the Kurdish resistance forces’ efforts to prevent one of the worst human rights travesties of our times. Stop ISIS!

ISIS, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria or Daesh is a jihadist group that has taken over large areas of Iraq and Syria, committing atrocities of killing residents and foreigners they have taken as hostages, and selling women and children.

Kobane is a Syrian town near the Turkey border that has become a symbol of resistance to invading jihadists.

Chief White Bird, like many of his people, was a Dreamer, a follower of the teachings of Smohalla, the Wanapam shaman and prophet. Alongside Chief Joseph, White Bird directed the 1877 withdrawal from eastern Oregon into Montana and ahead toward the Canadian border during the Nez Perce War. White Bird’s following was second in size to Joseph’s but did not exceed 1000 men.

Eliza Spalding was the first white woman to cross the Rockies on what would be know as the Oregon Trail, that was explored and mapped by my kindred, John Fremont, who married Jessie Benton, the daughter of Senator Thomas Hart Benton, the author o Manifest Destiny. Eliza was born a Hart, and thus is kin to my great great grandfather, Isaac Hull, a Captain of the U.S. Constitution. That members of the Hart family played a huge role in the Western Expansion, will be seen in a new light by this Historian, who found a Continent born in the union of Christine Rosamond, and Garth Benton.

Eiza Spalding was very well liked by the Nez Perce peoples, whose women often followed her around her home wanting to see how the “white woman” cooked, cleaned, dressed, and cared for her children.

This page presents much of what I know about Stephen Hart and his descendants. Stephen Hart was the progenitor of one the many Hart families in North America. It is though that he arrived in Plymouth on the ship the Lyon in 1632. He and his family moved to Hartford, Connecticut with Thomas Hooker in 1636. A few years later Stephen Hart and others settled the town of Farmington, Connecticut, where Harts have remained until the modern era. Many of Stephen Hart’s descendants left Farmington to settle in other parts of Connecticut, the United States, and Canada.

The Nez Perce believed in spirits called weyekins (Wie-a-kins) which would, they thought, offer “a link to the invisible world of spiritual power”.[10] The weyekin would protect one from harm and become a personal guardian spirit. To receive a weyekin, both girls and boys, aged 12 to 15, would go to the mountains alone on a vision quest. The person on quest would take a brew of dry peyote or other sacred plants, which the people believed held spiritual power. They did not eat and drank very little water. While on the quest, the individual would receive a vision of a spirit, which would take the form of a mammal or bird. This vision could appear physically or in a dream or trance. The weyekin was to bestow the animal’s powers on its bearer—for example; a deer might give its bearer swiftness. A person’s weyekin was very personal. It was rarely shared with anyone and was contemplated in private. The weyekin stayed with the person until death.

In August of 1931, Meher Baba made his first of nine trips to the West. Baba often changed plans rapidly, and just before this trip, he inexplicably instructed the disciple making the arrangements to change the reservations from a ship that had already been booked, to the SS Rajputana. At that time, Mahatma Gandhi was considering attending a round table discussion in London regarding the independence of India (the decision hinging on the easing of conflicts between Hindus and Muslims), and at the last minute decided in favor of going and also happened to book passage on the Rajputana. Meher Baba had recently been the guest of the mayor of Karachi, Jamshed Mehta, who cabled Gandhi that Baba was on-board, recommending to contact him.Gandhi sent word through his secretary, and the two met on September 8th in Baba’s cabin. Baba’s secretary recorded their conversation, and the transcript was later endorsed by both sides. Meher Baba related the narrative of his spiritual awakening, whereupon Gandhi remarked, “The divine truths that you have enunciated and your experiences are a regular feast which I would like to enjoy for hours.” They talked about matters of spiritual discipline like silence and fasting (Meher Baba having kept silence for six years at that point). Baba also allowed Gandhi to read some pages from a book he had written “explaining all the secrets of the (spiritual) Path”. Gandhi was the only person Baba ever showed this book to. Its whereabouts are not now known, except perhaps to whomever it was vouchsafed.(5)The conversation then turned to Gandhi’s political work, which Baba advised him on at length.(6) The following exchange was recorded:“India has suffered a great deal. Will she have to continue suffering?” asked Gandhi of Meher Baba.Meher Baba replied, “The situation as I see it is that if the British refuse to give you what is wanted, full Dominion Status to India, you will have to return empty-handed and be forced to start civil disobedience in India again. Despite your insistence on a non-violent revolution, if the atmosphere does turn violent, it will be difficult to check the situation. You have in recent months evidenced incidents of violence all over India. If such violence continues the spiritual cause of India will suffer tremendously. As long as civil disobedience in India is non-violently carried out, matters will work out successfully, otherwise India will have to continue suffering. But India will gain by this suffering, not lose, because suffering will prepare India to be courageous. Remember all good results after suffering.”India has always been a land of spirituality and if spiritual greatness is to be maintained, the energy of suffering must remain. In order for it to remain spiritually great, India must be prepared to suffer, but non-violently.”These consultations continued for three consecutive nights. On the last night Gandhi expressed the desire to join Meher Baba, that he longed for God-Realization, and that “…if God ordained he should retire from politics, God would create such circumstance as to relieve him of all obligations and responsibilities for which he was committed.”(7)

According to the memoirs of Benjamin of Tudela and Pethahiah of Regensburg, there were about 100 Jewish settlements and substantial Jewish population in Kurdistan in the 12th century. Benjamin of Tudela also gives the account of David Alroi, the messianic leader from central Kurdistan, who rebelled against the king of Persia and had plans to lead the Jews back to Jerusalem. These travellers also report of well-established and wealthy Jewish communities in Mosul, which was the commercial and spiritual center of Kurdistan. Many Jews fearful of approaching crusaders, had fled from Syria and Palestine to Babylonia and Kurdistan. The Jews of Mosul enjoyed some degree of autonomy over managing their own community.[10]

The religion of the Jews in Kurdistan was certainly Jewish, their nationality became Kurdistani[citation needed]and their mother language was most definitely Syriac,[citation needed] however their ethnicity is less pronounced. The Jews in today’s Kurdistan region converted to Judaism in 30 AD[citation needed] and were in fact Syriac speaking people, which in reality makes their ethnicity much more closer to Syriacs of Semitic Assyrian stock, than to the Iranic Kurds.[citation needed] Not everyone who lived in the Kurdistan region was ethnically Kurdish, in fact Syriac Christians & Syriac Jews are living proof of that. Further, at the time of conversion in 30 AD there were no Kurds in north of Iraq, there is absolutely no historical proof that the Kurdish language, ethnicity, or indeed nationality existed in Northern Iraq, at that time.[citation needed] Also, the official administrative language of Adiabene which was the kingdom that these Jewish converts sprang out of was of course Syriac, even coins minted in Adiabene contained Syriac lettering, suggesting very much that Jewish Adiabene was ethnically Syriac of Semitic, Assyrian stock.[citation needed]

Assyrian identity[edit]

Though a minority, some literature has referred to Jews of Kurdistan as “Assyrian Jews.” [15][16]

According to the Jewish Virtual Library there is a popular belief that many modern-day Assyrian families from northern Iraq were originally Jewish and were forced to convert to Christianity over 500 years ago.[17]

Genetic analysis of Kurdish Jews[edit]

An extremely close genetic proximity of Jewish communities and non-Jewish Middle Eastern populations has been observed in several DNA studies.[18] In 2001, a team of German, Indian and Israeli specialists published the results of their research on Y-chromosome polymorphism, that showed that Jews and Kurds are close genetic relatives.[19] The Jews and Kurds, according to the research, have common ancestors who resided in northern Mesopotamia about 4,000 years ago. The Kurdish Jews, though found genetically close to their Muslim Kurdish neighbours, were still closer related to Sephardic and Ashkenazi Jewish groups, supporting the hypothesis of a distant common ancestry, rather than a recent contribution of Judaism converts to this Jewish community (documented conversion to Judaism occurred in the area during the classic period, among the ruling class of the Parthian client Kingdom of Adiabene).[19] Among the Jewish communities, the closest genetic bond to Muslim Kurds was found among the Ashkenazi Jews, though the sequences were still distinguishable.

Asenath Barzani, also Asenath Barazani[1] (1590–1670) (in Kurdish: Asênat Barzanî), the daughter of the eminent Rabbi Samuel HaLevi Barzani, was a renowned Kurdish Jewish woman who lived in Mosul, Iraq. Her writings demonstrate her mastery of Hebrew, Torah, Talmud, Midrash, and Kabbalah, and her letters are both lyrical and erudite. She is considered the first female rabbi of Jewish history by some scholars.

I never left the entrance to my house or went outside; I was like a princess of Israel … I grew up on the laps of scholars, anchored to my father of blessed memory. I was never taught any work but sacred study.”[4]

There are many Kurdish stories and legends about her and miracles she performed,[7] including the one described in “A Flock of Angels”.[8] In local folklore her sexuality plays a central role, while in life it did not seem to have presented a problem. Many of the stories which allude to her supernatural powers were found in amulets. These include her ability to limit her childbearing to two children so that she could devote herself to her studies, and the ability to ward off an intruder in order to prevent him from raping her by loudly calling out holy names.[7]

A Flock of Angels[edit]

According to the legend, her father often appeared in Barzani’s dreams, revealing dangers to her and telling her how to avert them. On one such occasion, she went to Amadiyah where she convinced the Jews to celebrate Rosh Hodesh, the new moon, outdoors, as had been their custom before they were threatened by hostile gentiles.[8] As they proceeded with the celebration, there were shouts and they saw flames shoot up into the sky. The synagogue had been set on fire, with all the sacred books and scrolls in it. After Barzani whispered a secret name she had learned from her father, the people saw a flock of angels descending to the roof of the synagogue. The angels beat the flames with their wings, until every last spark had been put out. Then they rose up into the heavens like a flock of white doves and were gone. And when the smoke cleared, everybody saw that not only none of the Jews had been hurt since the congregation had been outdoors, but that another miracle had taken place: the synagogue had not burned, nor was any of the Torah scrolls touched by the flames. After that miracle, the Jews of Amadiyah were not harassed by the gentiles for a long time. Gratefully, they renamed the synagogue after her, and the legend ends with the words “and it is still standing today”.[9]

The Jewish Roots of Kurdistan

The history of Judaism in Kurdistan is ancient. The Talmud holds that Jewish deportees were settled in Kurdistan 2800 years ago by the Assyrian king Shalmaneser. As indicated in the Talmud, the Jews were given permission by the rabbinic authorities to allow conversion from the local population. They were exceptionally successful in their endeavor. The illustrious Kurdish royal house of Adiabene, with Arbil as its capital, was converted to Judaism in the course of the 1st century BCE, along with, it appears, a large number of Kurdish citizens in the kingdom (see Irbil/Arbil in Encyclopaedia Judaica).

The name of the Kurdish king Monobazes (related etymologically to the name of the ancient Mannaeans), his queen Helena, and his son and successor Izates (derived from yazata, “angel”), are preserved as the first proselytes of this royal house (Ginzberg 1968, VI.412). [But this is chronologically untenable as Monobazes’ effective rule began only in CE 18. In fact during the Roman conquest of Judea and Samaria (68-67 BCE), Kurdish Adiabene was the only country outside Israel that sent provisions and troops to the rescue of the besieged Galilee (Grayzel 1968, 163) – an inexplicable act if Adiabene was not already Jewish].

Many modern Jewish historians like Kahle (1959), who believes Adiabene was Jewish by the middle of the 1st century BCE, and Neusner (1986), who goes for the middle of the 1st century CE, have tried unsuccessfully to reconcile this chronological discrepancy.

All agree that by the beginning of the 2nd century CE, at any rate, Judaism was firmly established in central Kurdistan.

Like many other Jewish communities, Christianity found Adiabene a fertile ground for conversion in the course of 4th and 5th centuries. Despite this, Jews remained a populous group in Kurdistan until the middle of the present century and the creation of the state of Israel. At home and in the synagogues, Kurdish Jews speak a form of ancient Aramaic called Suriyani (i.e., “Assyrian”), and in commerce and the larger society they speak Kurdish. Many aspects of Kurdish and Jewish life and culture have become so intertwined that some of the most popular folk stories accounting for Kurdish ethnic origins connect them with the Jews.

The tombs of Biblical prophets like Nahum in Alikush, Jonah in Nabi Yunis (ancient Nineveh), Daniel in Kirkuk, Habakkuk in Tuisirkan, and Queen Esther and Mordechai in Hamadân, and several caves reportedly visited by Elijah are among the most important Jewish shrines in Kurdistan and are venerated by all Jews today.

  1. Reblogged this on Rosamond Press and commented:

Yesterday a Senator expressed deep concern that Turkey will slaughter the Kurds when we pull out of Syria. This has much to do with the lawfirm that mishandled the creative legacy of Rosamond. Of course it does. Put the plight of the Kurds on the Presco Plate. We can handle it!
