When I began my Bond novel, I asked if James Bond was a Biblical Scholar. I’ve looked at thousands old English genealogies, and read about royal women who entered a convent and got a college degree. After they got married, and they gave birth to royal babies – they did amazing scholarly work in secular society. They wrote books, composed music, and did paintings. Then they had another baby!

Anne’s father was influenced by Erasmus and followed a moderate path within the Reformation. He decided to side with the Schmalkaldic League and opposed Emperor Charles V. After John’s death, Anne’s brother William became Duke of Jülich-Cleves-Berg, bearing the promising epithet “The Rich”. In 1526, her elder sister Sibylle was married to John Frederick, Elector of Saxony, head of the Protestant Confederation of Germany and considered the “Champion of the Reformation”.
The artist Hans Holbein the Younger was dispatched to Düren to paint portraits of Anne and her younger sister, Amalia, each of whom Henry VIII was considering as his fourth wife. Henry required the artist to be as accurate as possible, not to flatter the sisters. The portraits are now located in the Louvre Museum in Paris and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Another 1539 portrait, by the school of Barthel Bruyn the Elder, is in the collection of Trinity College, Cambridge.[11]

God is love. The entire gospel only happened because He loved us. Wokeism preaches a message of tolerance, but it’s not about love at all. Wokeism is about hatred, division, and separation.
Jesus said, ‘The gates of hell will not prevail against the church’ in Matthew 16:18. The enemy is trying his very best to destroy the church through these deceptive ideas, but we know the end of the story! As we guard ourselves against this deception, we need to wake up to three things:
Some people in church are still asleep to the reality that they can know God. Do you know Jesus Christ personally? Don’t let another day pass without starting a relationship with Him.
What Do Hegseth’s Arm Tattoos Mean?

Pete Hegseth has several tattoos, some referring to his time in the military and other to his faith, including a large Jerusalem cross tattoo.
Hegseth said he was barred from working at Biden’s January 2021 inauguration after another soldier flagged him to his superiors for a tattoo associated with extremist groups, describing him as a possible “insider threat.” The tattoo in question was “Deus Vult,” a Latin phrase that translates to “God wills it.” It served as a battle cry for Christians during the Crusades and had been adopted by white extremist groups, including some that flew banners with the phrase on Jan. 6 earlier that month.
Hegseth recently called the reporting on his dismissal from inauguration duty “Anti-Christian bigotry,” echoing an earlier post by Vice President-elect JD Vance, who described the tattoo as a “Christian motto.”
Have you ever struggled to live out your Christianity faithfully when so much of our culture goes against Biblical doctrine? It’s easy to let your convictions slide when the world shows so much hatred for Christian beliefs. We can fall asleep to the deception slowly seeping into our minds.
Acts 20:7–9 shares a story about a time Paul was teaching and a man named Eutychus fell into a deep sleep, causing him to fall out a window and die. Don’t be a Eutychus! Our world is filled with woke ideologies that go against the gospel at every turn. The enemy can gain a foothold in your mind when you doze off.
Ephesians 5:14 says, “Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”
6 Reasons Christianity Is Not Like Wokeism
By examining these six differences between Biblical doctrine and woke ideologies, we can wake up to the deception of the enemy and allow Christ’s truth to renew our minds.
#1. God emphasizes grace
Being “woke” or W-O-K-E is essentially Willfully Overlooking Known Evil. Dr. Ben Carson speaks of this, saying,
“You can’t deny that there were some terrible things that happened [in our country]. But [critical race theory] utilizes that to create a platform to build upon. As a nation, do we want to build upon our greatest mistakes, or do we want to build on our tremendous successes? The two lead to very different places. Critical race theory would have our children dividing themselves: making white kids feel guilty because they and all their relatives are oppressors and making Black kids and minorities feel like they’re victims. This is probably the worst thing you can do to a person because if you think you are a victim, you are.”
This mindset is the opposite of grace. Grace tells us we can be forgiven of all wrongdoing, and there is immeasurable freedom in this.
G-R-A-C-E stands for God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense. It takes courage to accept and receive this grace rather than burying yourself in shame and powerlessness. The Bible teaches that there is hope for everyone, but wokeism does not. Wokers want eternal punishment for those they consider oppressors and eternal victimhood for those they consider victims. There is no grace or hope in that future.
#2. Jesus offers forgiveness
Because of His outrageous, contagious love, Jesus Christ came to die on the cross for our sins and rise again. He reconciled man to God through Christ and offered forgiveness. Forgiveness is the core of the gospel. He doesn’t dredge up the past. God is in the recycling business. He repurposes us, our pain, our sin, and our grief. That’s what the gospel is all about.
Wokeism, though, says many things are unforgivable. Forgiveness is not a factor. Even when you recognize a wrong you’d like to make right, the path forward includes a never-ending cycle of striving to prove yourself good again. This is essentially a works-based way to save yourself from your sin, which is the opposite of the salvation God offers.
#3. Christianity celebrates uniqueness
The Bible says that we’re made in the unique image of God. We can celebrate the unique way we were created rather than compare ourselves to each other. Wokeism tends to pit different people against each other and group people together in categories.
According to the Bible, there is only one race. We all descended from Adam and Eve. There’s great diversity within humanity which shows off the creativity of God. Anytime we stereotype someone or an entire group of people based on the behavior of just a few, we mock the majesty of our Maker. The Bible says we are made in God’s image, but wokeism says our race or gender are the things that most define us. Wokeism perpetuates a narrative of victimhood, but the Bible preaches a narrative of victory.
#4. God is love
God is love. The entire gospel only happened because He loved us. Wokeism preaches a message of tolerance, but it’s not about love at all. Wokeism is about hatred, division, and separation. Its tenets simplify people down to their skin color, body parts, or how they use those parts. Advocates of wokeism want to silence Christians and show hatred toward us because we don’t adhere to their ideas. This is the classic battle of neo-paganism between the enemy and God.
The gospel emphasizes unification, but workers focus on separation. The gospel elevates the love of God, but wokeism centers itself around hatred. The gospel offers acceptance, but wokers only offer cancellation.
#5. God’s Word is the absolute truth
In Biblical Christian doctrine, absolute truth trumps our feelings. Emotions change daily and hourly, but the truth of God’s Word never changes. The Bible says those who don’t know the Lord are blinded to the truth. They want to identify and place their entire value on how they feel that day. Wokeism says your emotions are the truth, and no one can tell you otherwise. The enemy uses extreme deception to keep people from the truth. Our source of truth, however, comes from Scripture, not our emotions.
#6. Christianity values responsibility
Though Jesus emphasized love and grace, He also put great value on responsibility and personal accountability. Everything He talked about in the parables had to do with responsibility. Even the judgment seat of Christ is about a reckoning for our actions. Wokeism constantly shifts the blame to someone else, so there’s always a proverbial victim. The truth is that you’ll never have victory if you don’t take responsibility.
Bible Scriptures Compared to Woke Ideology
Matthew 22:29: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”
Woke 22:29: “Villainize your neighbor, unlike yourself.”
Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
Woke 3:23: “Only the prosperous and the oppressors have sinned and fall short of the glory of the culturally elite.”
John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
Woke 3:16: “Man so loved himself that he took what he wanted until only the woke were in power to villainize, blame, and incarcerate others.”
3 Ways to Be Awake in a Woke World
Jesus said, ‘The gates of hell will not prevail against the church’ in Matthew 16:18. The enemy is trying his very best to destroy the church through these deceptive ideas, but we know the end of the story! As we guard ourselves against this deception, we need to wake up to three things:
#1. Growing in God
We need to discover who we are in the body of Christ. Part of growing is understanding what it means to apply our gifts, aptitudes, and abilities within the Kingdom. If you are spiritually alive, you will grow to become the kind of person God desires you to be.
#2. Sowing resources
We must also start sowing through our time, talent, and finances, and sowing financial seeds into local church plants for future ministries. Yet, unfortunately, many people are asleep to the financial blessings that can be found in the local church culture by supporting other believers.
#3. Knowing the Lord personally
Some people in church are still asleep to the reality that they can know God. Do you know Jesus Christ personally? Don’t let another day pass without starting a relationship with Him.
Martin Luther once shared a dream he had about the demons of hell trying to prevail against heaven. They reported that even when lions ate a caravan of Christians in the desert or a great storm sunk a ship filled with missionaries, it didn’t matter because their souls were in heaven. Then, another demon called to Satan and said, “‘Satan, I’ve been working for five years to get this Christian to go to sleep. And finally, this Christian has fallen asleep.’ And with that, a standing ovation occurred in hell because one Christ follower went to sleep.”
Don’t be that Christian. Instead, hold fast to Biblical doctrine so you aren’t lulled to sleep by the world’s lies!

PRAGUE, Czech Republic
A pro-Palestine movement is gaining more momentum by the day in the Czech Republic, a country that, in the words of its own prime minister, sees itself as the “voice of Israel in Europe.”
The “Free Palestine” call, something once restricted to the fringes of Czech society, is a popular slogan on the streets of the capital Prague today, courtesy active social media campaigns and two successful protest marches that drew over a thousand people each time.
But while Palestine is finally becoming an elephant in the room in Czech political discourse, so is the intense hostility against activists challenging the country’s position.
Kara Kloss is a known figure in pro-Palestine activist circles in Prague, a person who never shies away from speaking her mind, be it at protests, through her art or on social media.
In her own words, she lives with the belief that “the personal is political and the political is personal.”
That was literally what Kloss did when she decided to use her personal space – her home – to convey her feelings about the deadly Israeli onslaught on Gaza, which has now killed more than 35,500 Palestinians in just over five months.
She put up posters in her apartment windows, with the messages: “Ceasefire Now,” “Free Palestine” and “It is Humanitarian not Political.”
Little did Kloss know that would put her at risk of losing of her home.
“The homeowner accused me of endangering the neighborhood and asked me to take it down,” Kloss, an American national working as an English teacher in Prague, told Anadolu.
“I said that while ‘Free Palestine’ could have a political context that may, unfortunately, not be welcome in Prague, asking for a cease-fire is a statement for peace. Simply asking for violence to stop.”
Kloss offered to speak with the neighbors who had an issue with the posters, but that was curtly rejected.
After an exchange of WhatsApp messages, seen by Anadolu, she was given an ultimatum: take down the posters or leave the apartment.
She opted for a middle way: “I took my posters and I added some art to them, so now you can only see some keywords and some beautiful art and flowers around them.
“The resistance is still there but, of course, one has to choose their battles.”
‘I hope somebody will rape you”
The friction between Kloss and her Prague neighborhood appears to be an extension of the larger structural clash of narratives in the Czech Republic.
The animosity against pro-Palestine activists has, at times, manifested in much more nefarious ways.
At a protest outside a Czech-Israeli forum in Prague last month, a man hurled a threat of sexual violence at protesters.
“I hope somebody will rape you, the same way they raped Israel,” he said to a group of women.
The threat drew condemnation from outside the Czech Republic, but within the country, police, media, civil society and politicians reacted with indifference.
A number of prominent Czech politicians were among those attending the event, including former minister Michaela Marksova Tominova, who even made a provocative gesture at the protesters outside.
‘People are scared to say anything’
Jana Ridvanova, a leading activist based in Prague, believes the hostility against the pro-Palestine movement is rooted in the Czech Republic’s push to reverse all policies of its Soviet-influenced past.
“Now we follow the West on every issue, be it the illegal invasion and bloody occupation of Iraq or supporting the (Israeli) occupation, apartheid and genocide in Palestine,” she told Anadolu.
“Islamophobia also plays a role here. But the main factor would be the Western interest-centered lens dominating the media, politics, and even the academia.”
Despite the government’s staunch pro-Israel stance, Czech society still appears to be unsure about the issue, as evidenced by a recent survey conducted by Herzl Center for Israel Studies at the Charles University in Prague.
In response to a question about the Oct. 7 Hamas attack and Israel’s war on Gaza, 32% of the respondents said they support Israel, 7% favored Palestinians, while 36% were on neither side.
On the Czech government’s view, 30% agreed with the official pro-Israel stance and 20% disagreed, with the remaining half saying they were unaware of the position.
“There is a segment of society that questions what is served to them by the media and politicians, but obviously the decisive factor here is the government and politicians, who are ideologically and pragmatically very pro-Zionist,” said Ridvanova.
“People are scared to say anything because it can cost them their jobs and positions.”
Jakub Kovar, a Czech student in Prague and an active participant in pro-Palestine demonstrations, has also been facing backlash for his activism.
“A lot of my friends asked me whether I’m scared of losing my public sector job,” he told Anadolu.
“The truth is I am constantly struggling with morality versus keeping my job. I’ve also lost some of my friends because of my opinions.”
Ridvanova emphasizes that the societal dilemma in Czech Republic is because of the incessant repetition of “Zionist mythology.”
“All these myths of the Zionists always only defending themselves. From 1948 through to 1967, everything is argued as being ‘self-defense,’ even the following brutal occupation,” she said.
“The myth about the Palestinians refusing their state is also repeated a lot. It breaks down to viewing the occupier as ‘the only democracy in the Middle East’ and Palestinians as the ultimate evil terrorists. People here have no idea about the Nakba (of 1948) and the ongoing Nakba. The Czechs are only being fed the occupying army and its government’s narrative.”
For Kloss, while she acknowledges that the reality is starker for pro-Palestine voices because of the dominant Israeli narrative, polite engagement is more important than confrontation.
“Of course, it is uncomfortable to be considered the lone troublemaker in the neighborhood. No one wants that kind of attention,” she said.
“They say in my hometown that if you can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen. I’m ready to take more heat, with pleasure.”
At 6:00 P.M. PST, I John Presco read the Baldwin and his wife were crowned King and Queen of Jerusalem in Bethlehem on Christmas Day. Baldwin and Alice are the great grandparents of Agnes of Bohemia, who founded the Knights of the Cross and the Red Star, which is the Star of Bethlehem. Because I am an expert in Family Trees, I found out Agnes descends from Alice, the daughter of Baldwin .The citation for the Knights of the Cross and Red Star, says this…
“Traditionally its roots were traced back to Holy Land. Nevertheless, in a parchment Breviary of the Order, dated 1356, the account of foundation contains no allusion to such a crusader lineage.[3]“
How wrong can you be – unless this order is hiding the real possibility – it is at the foundation of the Knights Templar – who may have been put up in a royal palace on Christmas Night.
“Baldwin temporarily lodged the knights in the royal palace on the Temple Mount and they became known as the Knights Templar.”
I alone discovered that the Red Cross represents the Knights Templar of Bethlehem. I declare myself the American Crusader King of Jerusalem for the reason the Knights of the Cross and the Red Star of Bethlehem considered moving to the United States.
Mt first duty is to the children who are threatened with death, and have been injured in the Israeli Hamas War. My second duty is to protect all religious peoples in Jerusalem. I’m calling for the release of all children taken hostage, and the evacuation of all children from the Gaza. They will need to be treated for PTSD. I suggest the castle of Bohemia be transformed into treatment centers.

Baldwin and his wife were crowned king and queen in Bethlehem on Christmas Day.[125] He and the Patriarch held a general assembly at the Council of Nablus on 16 January 1120.[123] The prelates and noblemen who attended the meeting confirmed the clergy’s right to collect the tithe and to bear arms “in the cause of defense”.[126] The council also ordered the punishment of adulterers, pimps, sodomites and bigamists, and prohibited sexual relations between Christians and Muslims.[126][127] Other decrees established penalties against thieves and those who falsely accused others of crimes.[126][127] The decisions of the council were the first examples of law making in the Kingdom of Jerusalem.[112]
A confraternity of knights established by Hugh of Payns and Godfrey de Saint-Omer to protect pilgrims in the Holy Land most probably received official recognition at the council, according to historians Malcolm Barber and Christopher Tyerman.[128][129] Baldwin temporarily lodged the knights in the royal palace on the Temple Mount and they became known as the Knights Templar.[128][129] He offered Nabi Samwil to the Cistercians, but Bernard of Clairvaux ceded the place to the Premonstratensians who built a monastery.[130] Shortly after the council, Baldwin and Patriarch Warmund also sent letters to Pope Calixtus II and the Venetians, urging them to support the defense of the Holy Land.[131] The crusaders especially needed the Venetians’ ships against the Egyptians.[131]

The question of Baldwin I’s succession divided the barons and the prelates, according to William of Tyre.[103][105] The highest-ranking prelate, Arnulf of Chocques, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, and Joscelin of Courtenay, who held the largest fief in the kingdom, argued that Baldwin should be elected without delay to avoid an interregnum.[103][105] Others maintained that the crown should first be offered to Eustace in accordance with Baldwin I’s last will.[103][105] Some “great nobles”, whom William of Tyre did not name, were appointed to inform Eustace of his brother’s death.[105] However, shortly after their departure, on Easter Day (14 April), Baldwin was anointed.[106] His coronation was delayed for unknown reasons.[107][108] Patriarch Arnulf died two weeks after Baldwin’s anointment and his successor, Warmund of Picquigny, was only installed in August or September.[109]
Alice was the second daughter of King Baldwin II of Jerusalem and Morphia of Melitene. She had three sisters. She was an aunt of Kings Baldwin III and Amalric I. Of her other sisters, Hodierna married Raymond II of Tripoli, and Ioveta became abbess of the convent in Bethany.
Princess consort of Antioch[edit]
Baldwin II had become regent of Antioch after the defeat of the principality at the Battle of Ager Sanguinis in 1119. In 1126, the 18-year-old Bohemond, son of Bohemond I, the first prince of Antioch, arrived to claim his inheritance. Immediately after the principality was handed over to him, Bohemond was married to Alice; the marriage was likely part of the negotiations prior to Bohemond’s arrival.
Power struggle with Baldwin[edit]
In 1130, Bohemond was killed in battle with the Danishmends, and Baldwin returned to Antioch to assume the regency, but Alice wanted the city for herself. She attempted to make an alliance with Zengi, the Seljuk atabeg of Mosul and Aleppo, offering to marry her daughter to a Muslim prince. The messenger sent by Alice to Zengi was captured on the way by Baldwin, and was tortured and executed. Alice refused to let Baldwin enter Antioch, but some of the Antiochene nobles opened the gates for Baldwin’s representatives, Fulk, Count of Anjou (Alice’s brother-in-law) and Joscelin I of Edessa. Alice at first fled to the citadel but finally flung herself on her father’s mercy and they were reconciled. She was expelled from Antioch, but was allowed to keep for herself Latakia and Jabala, the cities which had been her dowry when she had married Bohemond. Baldwin left Antioch under the regency of Joscelin, ruling for Alice and Bohemond’s young daughter Constance.
Power struggle with Fulk[edit]
Baldwin II died in 1131 and was succeeded in Jerusalem by his eldest daughter, Alice’s sister Melisende and her husband Fulk. Joscelin, also, died soon afterwards, and Alice again attempted to take control of Antioch, not wishing her young daughter to inherit the principality. The Antiochene nobles appealed to Fulk for help, and Alice allied with the rulers of the other two northern Crusader states, Pons of Tripoli and Joscelin I’s son Joscelin II. Pons would not allow Fulk to pass through the County of Tripoli, and Fulk was forced to travel to Antioch by sea. Pons and Joscelin may have feared that Fulk wanted to impose the suzerainty of Jerusalem over the northern states, although it was also rumoured that Alice had simply bribed them. Fulk and Pons fought a battle near Rugia, but peace was eventually made, and Fulk restored the regency in Antioch, placing the principality under the control of Reynald Masoier.
Marriage of Constance[edit]
Around 1135, Alice again attempted to take control of Antioch, negotiating with the Byzantine Empire for a husband for Constance; the future emperor Manuel Comnenus was a candidate. Some of the nobles of the principality, however, not wanting a Greek alliance, secretly summoned Raymond of Poitiers to marry Constance. The Patriarch, Ralph of Domfront, convinced Alice that Raymond was coming to marry her, but instead he himself performed the wedding of Raymond and the still-underage Constance.
Alice was humiliated and left Antioch, never to return. She died after 1151.[1]

This community, inspired by the nursing military orders, was dedicated to the care of elderly, sick and other needy people. In 1235 the hospital was richly endowed by the Queen of Bohemia, Agnes’s mother, with property formerly belonging to the Teutonic Knights. A few years later, in 1237 the Order had been formally constituted under the Rule of St. Augustine by Pope Gregory IX. Despite relatively clear origins of the Order, its beginnings used to be subject of legends, especially in the Baroque period: Traditionally its roots were traced back to Holy Land. Nevertheless, in a parchment Breviary of the Order, dated 1356, the account of foundation contains no allusion to such a crusader lineage.[3]

I belong to Pacific Souse and was told they may pull out of the Medicaid program, leaving 100,000 fellow citizens in Lane County, uncovered. I suspect this goes against the wishes of Saint Francis, There is property up for sale, and a hospital been sold to make a place for training nurses. I went to Riverbend hospital this morning, There is a large cross on the exterior. I believe this is a Franciscan Cross, that is described in on your Values website.

Once Upon The Cliff
How did Briar Cliff University get here? A little dive into our University’s history.
In 1929, the 175-foot hill located on the western outskirts of Sioux City, Iowa was covered in only briar patches. But two people, Mother Mary Dominica Wieneke, Major Superior of the Sisters of Saint Francis, and Reverend Edmond Heelan, Bishop of the Sioux City Diocese, had a dream.
On March 9, 1929, Mother Dominica and Bishop Heelan met with members of the Sioux City community. Businessmen attending that meeting committed themselves to raise a total of $25,000 to support the establishment of the college in Sioux City.
After this showing of community support, significant events followed in rapid succession. On Sept. 18, 1930, the college, named Briar Cliff after the hill on which it is located, was dedicated. Four days later, 25 women started classes in Heelan Hall, the only building on campus.
Our Story
Over 90 years ago, we began as a private, liberal-arts, two-year college for women. Today, we are still a private, liberal-arts institution — but we have grown into a University that offers award-winning educational programs, with all levels of certifications and degrees, to any individual wanting to pursue higher education.
Briar Cliff was founded on September 18, 1930 by the Catholic Franciscan order known as the Sisters of St. Francis. While the order is based in Dubuque, Iowa, the Sisters went to the area of greatest need when they sought to establish a higher education institution focused on students and centered on values.
Originally a river town on the intersection of Nebraska, Iowa, and South Dakota, Sioux City is a natural hub for business and industry. Briar Cliff’s iconic 70-acre clifftop campus offers students a unique 360 degrees of inspiring views overlooking the Loess Hills’ protected prairies and the City of Sioux City. When Saint Francis (1182-1226) was searching for the purpose of his life, he entered the church of San Damiano, a small church in disrepair outside Assisi, Italy. When Francis prayed before a crucifix painted on wood, he heard Christ telling him to rebuild His Church. He took fine cloth from his father’s store, sold it and used the money to restore the Church of San Damiano. He also begged for most of the materials needed to rebuild the church. From this point on, Francis devoted himself completely to God and continued to provide spiritual leadership and witness of service throughout his life. The Church of San Damiano later served as the home of Saint Clare. The San Damiano Crucifix, preserved in the Church of Santa Chiara, is a 12th- century icon representing the living God. The Crucifix, which reflects the death, resurrection and ascension into glory, expresses the total and universal Paschal Mystery of Christ. It invites us to a personal encounter with the sacred, transfigured Christ and to a life of faith and action in the manner of Saint Francis and Saint Clare.
The central figure of this icon is Christ, standing upright, not nailed, but alive with his eyes open. His arms are outstretched in a gesture of love and an invitation to faith as Savior of the world and eternal. Behind his outstretched arms is his empty tomb, represented as a black rectangle. The Ascension is portrayed within a circle of red at the top of the crucifix. Christ is holding a golden cross, his royal scepter, and wearing gold, a symbol of royalty and victory. The right hand of God the Father is extended, welcoming the Son into divine fullness. Below the arms of Jesus are witnesses to the Crucifixion. Mary, Jesus’ mother, John, the Apostle, Mary Magdalene, and Mary Clopas, mother of James, and a centurion. Also depicted are Longinus, the Roman soldier who pierced Jesus’ side, and Stephen, the soldier who offered Jesus a sponge soaked in vinegar wine. At the bottom of the icon are six unknown saints who some suggest are Saints Damian, Rufinus, Michael, John the Baptist, Peter and Paul, all patrons of Churches in the Assisi area. Saint Damian was the Patron of the Church in which Francis prayed before the Crucifix. Saint Rufinus was the Patron Saint of Assisi. Two groups of angels are also included. As he knelt before the Crucifix of San Damiano, Francis prayed: “Most High, glorious God, enlighten the darkness of my heart, and give me true faith, certain hope, and perfect charity, sense and knowledge, Lord, that I may carry out Your holy and true command.”
The Briar Cliff University seal depicts values important to Briar Cliff University. The cross proclaims that we are a Christian university, dedicated to the love that Christ Jesus gave to all. The wavy lines indicate the location of the University in Siouxland, with the Missouri River as the western boundary. In the impressionistic eagle, the sign of the Sioux tribes who were a part of this area, we see strength and reaching for the heights. Mater Gratiae, Mother of Grace, proclaims Mary, Mother of the Savior, as patroness of Briar Cliff under her title of “Lady of Grace.” Caritas, love, is the Franciscan call to the two great commands: love God with all your power and love your neighbor as yourself. The star speaks of striving upward for knowledge and wisdom.

The Holy Land… have you ever wondered why St. Francis of Assisi has such a tie to this holy and sacred place?
The Custody of the Holy Land is usually traced back to the year 1217, when the first General Chapter of the Friars Minor was celebrated at St. Mary of the Angels, near Assisi. In an act of inspiration, St. Francis of Assisi decided to send his Friars to all nations.
St. Francis and his friars divided the world at that time into 11 Mother Provinces. The Province of the Holy Land at that time included the Empire of Constantinople, Greece and the Greek Isles, Asia Minor, Antioch, Syria, Palestine, Cyprus, Egypt, and the rest of the Orient. It was a very important province, not just because of its size, but also due to the presence of the holy sites. St. Francis passed through part of the Holy Land in 1219 and 1220, demonstrating the humility and love needed to minister to the population of the land as well as living out the devotion and veneration of the holy sites that have been exemplified by the Franciscans in the Holy Land up to the present moment.
Though the presence of the Franciscans proved to be a marked contrast to the actions of the Crusaders, though the intent of the protection of the Holy Sites was a goal of both groups. Throughout the centuries, conflict and conquest have interrupted the settlement of the Franciscans, though the desire to live there never left, and visitations for worship and veneration continued. The Muslims did allow Franciscans custody of the Holy Sepulcher as early as the beginning of the 1300s, and the Holy See recognized the custody in 1342 and allowed for the permanent settlement of the Franciscans in the Holy Land.
In 1223, St. Francis created the first Nativity scene in Greccio, Italy. After preaching on the birth of Christ near a tableau of live animals and an empty manger filled with straw, St. Francis looked in the manger and picked up the Baby Jesus who had miraculously appeared there during his preaching. Due to this devotion to the Child Jesus and the birth of Our Savior, it is not surprising that the Franciscans settled permanently in Bethlehem near the Basilica of the Nativity of our Lord in 1347, and have been caring for the site ever since.
From The Cliff to Colonel: Tricia Van Den Top’s Journey of Service and Leadership

Only about 15% of officers who commission in the U.S. Air Force ever reach the rank of colonel. For Tricia Van Den Top (‘94), the journey to that achievement began not with a military dream, but with a nursing degree from Briar Cliff University.
In 2016, after two decades of service, Van Den Top was promoted to colonel — a milestone in a career she never expected to pursue.
Finding Her Path at The Cliff
Before considering the Air Force, Van Den Top worked as a nursing assistant in her hometown. She originally planned to enlist, but a high school counselor encouraged her to pursue nursing instead. That advice brought her to Briar Cliff.
She already knew the campus from attending the All-State summer music camps, but what drew her most was the sense of belonging and community.
“Being introduced to the Sisters and the Franciscan way of things made it feel like home to me,” Van Den Top said. “It ended up being a really good decision. Looking back, the personal approach to academic advising with a liberal arts education and the emphasis on critical thinking were very important to my professional life.”
After graduation, she remained connected to the Sisters of St. Francis and learned the story of Sister Mary Hargrafen, a nurse who had carried Franciscan values into the Air Force. Inspired by Sr. Hargrafen’s example, Van Den Top realized she could do the same.
From Nursing to Leadership
Van Den Top’s Air Force career began as a staff nurse at F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming. She trained in battlefield nursing, combat casualty care and operating room nursing in Texas and later managed surgical services in Mississippi.
Although she valued her early nursing work, she felt drawn to something different. “Nursing was good, but it wasn’t what really spoke to my soul,” she said. “While working in medical response readiness, I was granted the opportunity to retrain as an Air Force Logistics Readiness Officer.”
That transition proved pivotal. She quickly found her niche, serving in logistics leadership roles at bases in the U.S., Qatar, and the United Kingdom, and deploying to Afghanistan as a logistics commander. Over the next decade, she steadily rose through the ranks, completing advanced training and earning a Masters in Air Transportation Management at Embry-Riddle and a Master’s in logistics at the Air Force Institute of Technology.
Her assignments took her from being a flight commander to an Executive Assistant for the Director of the Defense Logistics Agency, Chief of Logistics Plans for the Combined Forces Special Operations Command-Central, to the Pentagon and then on to Commanding a Supply Chain Management Squadron. She also deployed for Operation Inherent Resolve to reopen a Gulf War-era air base in Kuwait as the Base Operations Support Integrator. There she worked alongside international partners as deputy commander of the 332nd Expeditionary Mission Support Group.
“Being able to interact with foreign militaries and work together on multinational planning helped me realize that we all want the same things in life,” she said. “We may come from different traditions and cultures, but we all share the same hope — a world where our military skills are not needed and our families and friends can live peacefully as part of the global human mosaic.”
Colonel and Beyond
On August 1, 2016, while serving as deputy commander of the 28th Mission Support Group at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota, Van Den Top was promoted to colonel. She later commanded the 90th Mission Support Group at F.E. Warren Air Force Base — returning to the place where her career began.
Throughout her service, Franciscan values guided her approach. Her units regularly volunteered in the communities surrounding their bases, serving in food pantries and supporting local families.
Service After Service
Retirement didn’t slow Van Den Top’s commitment to service. She has helped prepare thousands of meals for schools and meal-on-wheels programs, supported a Cuban family adjusting to life in the U.S., and volunteers with a charity thrift shop that funds scholarships for underprivileged students.
She also serves on her parish Green Team and sits on the advisory board of the nation’s first faith-based inner-city urban farm, which supplies fresh produce to a Catholic grade school and surrounding underserved neighborhoods. In addition, she co-founded Junking for Joy with other Franciscan Way of Life members — a network that supports social service programs by redistributing household goods, clothing, and furniture to those in need, while promoting reuse and keeping materials out of landfills.
In 2022, she was commissioned as a Franciscan Associate with the Sisters of St. Francis and pledged to live the way of life modeled by St. Francis and St. Clare.
Looking back, Van Den Top sees a common thread running from her time at The Cliff through her military career and into her retirement: servant leadership.
“What began as a simple desire to be a nurse grew into a 23-year career in an armed service where it is possible to live out servant leadership by leading, building, and caring for communities wherever planted,” she said.
If she could give her younger self advice, it would be simple: “Don’t be so focused on graduation and moving on to your professional career. Enjoy the college journey. Savor friendships and relationships. Those are the things you’ll look back on fondly later in life.”

90th Mission Support Group welcomes new commander

Colonel Tricia Van Den Top took command of the 90th Mission Support Group during a change-of-command ceremony on the Argonne Parade Field here June 16, 2017.
Colonel Stephen Kravitsky, 90th Missile Wing commander, served as the presiding officer and gave his thoughts on the value Verdugo brought to the command, then stated why Van Den Top is up to the challenge.
“Frank Verdugo is a phenomenal leader who made the impossible happen,” said Kravitsky. “But as we say goodbye to one member of the family, we are lucky to welcome another. Col. Tricia Van Den Top is a highly experienced officer with a diverse background in both the medical community and the mission support group. We are proud to have her.”
Col. Frank Verdugo, outgoing commander, will continue his Air Force career at the Air War College at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama.
Van Den Top began her career in the 90th Medical Operations Squadron at F.E. Warren Air Force Base as a staff and clinical nurse. She is returning to F. E. Warren after a tour of duty as the 28th Mission Support Group deputy commander at Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota.
She noted that she has big shoes to fill, but is excited to take command of the 90 MSG.
“I have observed a well-run, highly-effective organization which is a testament to Col. Verdugo’s leadership and a group filled with professionals and the best sons and daughters America has to offer,” she said. “This is the assignment of a lifetime, and I am very pleased to return to where my career started. I look forward to building on the 90th Mission Support Group’s already outstanding accomplishments.”
A change-of-command ceremony is a tradition that represents a formal transfer of authority and responsibility from the outgoing commander to the incoming commander.
Hegseth says he fired the top military lawyers because they weren’t well suited for the jobs

WASHINGTON (AP) — Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Monday that he was replacing the top lawyers for the military services because he didn’t think they were “well-suited” to provide recommendations when lawful orders are given.
Speaking at the start of a meeting with Saudi Arabia’s defense minister, Hegseth refused to answer a question about why the Trump administration has selected a retired general to be the next Joint Chiefs chairman, when he doesn’t meet the legal qualifications for the job.
President Donald Trump on Friday abruptly fired the chairman, Air Force Gen. CQ Brown Jr., and Hegseth followed that by firing Navy Adm. Lisa Franchetti, the chief of naval operations, and Air Force Gen. James Slife, the vice chief of the Air Force. He also said he was “requesting nominations” for the jobs of judge advocate general, or JAG, for the Army, Navy and Air Force.
He did not identify the lawyers by name. The Navy JAG, Vice Adm. Christopher French, retired about two months ago, and there was already an ongoing effort to seek a replacement. The Army JAG, Lt. Gen. Joseph B. Berger III, and Air Force JAG, Lt. Gen. Charles Plummer, were fired.

The removals — which came without any specified reasons in terms of their conduct — sent a new wave of apprehension through the Pentagon. And they added to the broader confusion over the changing parameters of Elon Musk’s demand that federal employees provide recent job accomplishments by the end of Monday or risk getting fired, even though government officials later said the edict is voluntary.
Throughout the Pentagon on Monday, military and civilian workers juggled their routine national security duties with a growing unease that anyone could be next on the firing block.
Hegseth has defended Trump’s firing of Brown, saying it was not unusual and the president deserves to pick his own team. The defense chief argued that other presidents made changes in military personnel.
Trump’s choice of retired Air Force Lt. Gen. Dan Caine is unusual. Caine would have to come back onto active duty, but he does not meet the legal requirements for the top post. According to law, a chairman must have served as a combatant commander or service chief.
Those requirements can be waived by the president. Historically, Pentagon leaders have deliberately shifted top admirals and generals into a job as service chief for even a brief period of time in order to qualify them for the chairman’s post.
In recent decades, a number of three-star and four-star officers have been fired, but Pentagon leaders have routinely made clear why they were ousted. Those reasons included disagreements over the conduct of the Iraq or Afghanistan wars, problems with the oversight of America’s nuclear arsenal and public statements critical of the president and other leaders.
Brown, a history-making fighter pilot and only the second Black general to serve as chairman, is the first in that post to be fired in recent history. Hegseth made it clear before he took the secretary’s job that he thought Brown should be fired, and he questioned whether Brown got the job because he was Black.
Hegseth has also repeatedly argued that military officers would be reviewed “based on meritocracy.” It’s unclear, however, how Franchetti, Slife and the lawyers were evaluated and what meritocracy they were found to lack.
As a result, Pentagon workers are left to decipher whether the officers were fired due to political reasons or because of their race or gender. Hegseth has laid out a campaign to rid the military of leaders who support diversity and equity in the ranks. And there have been persistent threats from the Trump administration that military officers advocating diversity and equity — or so-called “wokeism” — could be targeted.
Hegseth has said that efforts to expand diversity and equity have eroded the military’s readiness.
Major media outlets, including Hegseth’s former employer Fox News, decline to sign new Pentagon reporting rules

Fox News, which previously employed Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, joined most major news organizations on Tuesday in refusing to agree to new rules around reporting at the Pentagon.
The company signed a joint statement with ABC News, CBS News, CNN and NBC News saying the new requirements “would restrict journalists’ ability to keep the nation and the world informed of important national security issues.”00:28Top Stories from POLITICOSkip in 4s

“The policy is without precedent and threatens core journalistic protections,” the organizations said.
The move is a blow to Hegseth, a former host of “Fox & Friends Weekend.” Hegseth announced the new rules last month, threatening journalists’ access to the Pentagon if they did not sign on to rules that would punish them for either soliciting or publishing information that the Pentagon did not want released.
An initial memo to reporters read that “information must be approved for public release by an appropriate authorizing official before it is released, even if it is unclassified.” Reporters that did not sign on to the agreement would not be issued press passes.
News organizations have until Tuesday to agree to the new rules, but so far only — the Trump-friendly One America News Network — has said publicly that it has done so.
POLITICO has also declined to agree to the Pentagon’s new rules. In a statement, the company said the new policy “infringes on First Amendment protections and limits the ability to produce rigorous and transparent reporting.”
The company added that POLITICO will continue to cover the military “fairly and independently.”
The new rules follow multiple controversial moves by the Department. Earlier this year, the Department took away workspaces from several media organizations — including POLITICO, The Washington Post and The New York Times.
President Donald Trump told reporters Tuesday that Hegseth “finds the press to be very disruptive in terms of world peace, and maybe security for our nation.”
“The press is very dishonest,” Trump added.
Hegseth has been largely dismissive of media outlets’ refusals. He has responded to statements from the Washington Post, The New York Times and The Atlantic — all of which also refused to agree to the new rules — with the handwaving emoji.
Hegseth said on Tuesday that the new rules are “commonsense.”
“It used to be, Mr. President, the press could go pretty much anywhere in the Pentagon, the most classified area in the world,” Hegseth said. “Also, if they sign onto the credentialing, they’re not going to try to get soldiers to break the law by giving them classified information. So it’s commonsense stuff, Mr. President, we’re trying to make sure national security is respected and we’re proud of the policy.”

In short, the answer to your question is that the Jubilee year is currently not observed or commemorated. The reasons for this are complex and involve many different opinions on the matter. In the following lines I will attempt to briefly relay the relevant issues.
According to biblical law, the Jubilee is only observed when all twelve tribes of the Jewish nation are living in Israel, as is derived from the verse,1 “And you shall sanctify the fiftieth year, and proclaim freedom throughout the land for all who live on it,” which implies that the Jubilee is only sanctified when “all who live on it”—meaning, all who are meant to be living there—are in the Land of Israel. Furthermore, the Jubilee is only observed when every tribe is living in the specific part of the land which was it was allotted when the Land of Israel was divided. However, some are of the opinion that the Jubilee is observed as long as there is a partial representation of each tribe, even if most of the tribe is not in Israel.
In the 6th century BCE, the Assyrians conquered the Northern Kingdom of Israel and sent the majority of its population into exile. Those who were deported are historically known as the Ten Lost Tribes.
We are certain that before that point in time the Jubilee was regularly observed. We also know that, with the destruction of the Second Temple and the disbandment of the Sanhedrin (supreme rabbinical court), we ceased to mark the Jubilee year in any form. The periods about which there is a question are the remaining years between the exile of the Ten Tribes and the destruction of the First Temple, and the Second Temple Era.
According to the opinion that partial representation of each tribe is sufficient to fulfill the scriptural requirement, biblically mandated Jubilees were fully observed throughout the periods in question, because there remained a small representation of each tribe in Israel.
However, according to the first opinion mentioned above, with the exile of the Northern Kingdom the required condition for the Jubilee to be sanctified was lost. Thus, the last time there was a biblical requirement to observe the Jubilee was about 150 years before the destruction of the First Temple.
The question remains, however, whether according to this opinion Jubilee years were designated or observed during this time by rabbinic injunction. This is the subject of debate amongst the sages.2
As mentioned above, though, today the Jubilee year is neither designated nor observed.3

The year of jubilee will begin on December 8 — a date that Francis said is “of great significance, for it impels the Church to continue the work begun at Vatican II.” December 8 is also the date of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, and the date when the Second Vatican Council closed in 1965.
