Did Betsey Johnson Know Knight Would Do Anything?

Nike Co-Founder Phil Knight Uses Cocaine Analogy To Explain Why He’s Spending Big In Oregon Governor’s Race

Nike co-founder Phil Knight promised Saturday to do everything he could to keep Democrats out of Oregon’s open governor’s mansion.

Knight is putting his massive fortune where his mouth is, pouring cash into the two candidates running against Democratic candidate Tina Kotek: Republican Christine Drazan and independent state Sen. Betsy Johnson, Fox News reported.

Johnson, who was a Democrat until 2021, has received some $3.75 million from Knight and is pulling more support from Kotek’s base than from Drazan’s, according to Fox and a local NBC affiliate.

In early October, Knight shifted his support to Drazan, donating $1 million to the state House minority leader’s campaign, Fox noted in another article.

“One of the political cartoons after our legislative session had a person snorting cocaine out of a mountain of white. […] It said, ‘Which of these is illegal in Oregon?’ And the answer was the plastic straw.”

Does Phil Knight hate Ken Kesey? Would he blow up the Kesey mural? I detect a hidden Ayn Rand story here. I want to ask Phil what he thinks about Trump.

Donald Trump and Ken Kesey will leave the same thumb print on our culture, being, Great Expectations, came to naught. Both men have polarized our Nation. Both men were/are seen as a Messiah, a Savior. Ken might have been searching for a prophet, other than himself. Trump knew he was no prophet, and not even a Christian, but, others believing otherwise, would suit his purposes – whatever those were!

“One of the political cartoons after our legislative session had a person snorting cocaine out of a mountain of white. […] It said, ‘Which of these is illegal in Oregon?’ And the answer was the plastic straw.”

That was billionaire Nike NKE, +0.06% co-founder Phil Knight, criticizing the Democrat-run state government in Oregon, telling the New York Times on Saturday that he would do anything to block the Democrats in the governor’s race.

Knight is referring to the 2020 decriminalization of possession of small amounts of almost all hard drugs, including cocaine, in Oregon. Further galling the athletic-gear magnate: that, in 2019, Gov. Kate Brown signed a bill into law that prohibits restaurants from automatically handing out plastic straws unless requested.

Knight donated $3.75 million to kickstart former Democrat-turned-independent Betsy Johnson’s gubernatorial campaign. She left the Democratic Party last year and has since led a centrist movement to draw support away from Democratic nominee Tina Kotek.

But as polling found support for Johnson waning, it allowed Oregon’s Republican candidate, Christine Drazan, to shore up support for her campaign. The New York Times reported that Knight donated $1 million to Drazan this month after he told the outlet that the state government was leaning too far left.

Knight, Oregon’s richest man, described himself as an “anti-Tina” person.

The Democrats have had a four-decade stronghold in Oregon, but the latest polls show that, as of Oct. 13, Drazan has a 3-point lead over Kotek, according to FiveThirtyEight. Drazen has 37.4% polling average, while Kotek has 34.3% and Johnson attracts 16.4% support.
