Esplanade

berlin-way2berlinway

I am now looking at these open spaces belonging to descendants of Teutonic Knights.

Esplanade, term from the French for a large free
space or free area, as one finds it between house lines or between
attachments and the appropriate city.
1874 were put on the road by the owner of manor Stuttmeister
(Charlottenburg), probably this terrain belonged. On the map of 1877
the route is drawn in still without names.

The previous names were Berliner way (by 1691 to around 1895), Berliner Chaussee (1824 to 1895),
all of the traffic routes to and from Old Berlin designated. The Berliner Straße forms between Esplanade,
Bornholmer Straße and Wisbyer road the border to the district of Pankow .

The marriage cirtificate of William Stuttmeister says they lived on

Berlin Way. The main road through Charlottenburg castle was called
the road to Berlin. I was told the Stuttmeisters owned a great
estate in Berlin. It appears Charlottenburg was built on the
Stuttmeister estate where Trekhener horses were long raised.

Sometimes that was the mansion Pohl, one
of the first buildings in the Esplanade, which I had regained again
times on the HP von Willy of man. Please times with the mouse over
the picture go seeing around the pertinent postcard.

1732 was combined on
arrangement king Friedrich of William I. in Trakehnen the absent-
minded stud departments of the public domains into a “royal
Stutamt”. It was originally meant as yard stud, which should supply
with to the Marstall to Berlin course and riding horses.

From the 1860s on the wealthy Bourgeoisie of Berlin discovered Charlottenburg as a residential area, among the first wereGerson von Bleichröder and Ernst Werner von Siemens, who had a villa built in the Berliner Straße in 1862. At the same time industrial companies like Siemens & Halske and Schering erected large factories in the north-east, at the border with theMoabit district of Berlin. In 1877 Charlottenburg received town privileges and until World War I saw an enormous increase of population with 100,000 inhabitants as of 1893 and a population of 306,000 in 1920, being the second largest city within theProvince of Brandenburg, after Berlin. In the course of industrialization in the 19th century, much of Charlottenburg was incorporated in a network of streets laid out in the Hobrecht-Plan in an area that came to be known architecturally as theWilhelmine Ring.

When the army was supplied starting from 1832 of the Remontedepots

Trakehnen. 1878 appeared volume I of the Stutbuches of the main stud

Esplanade

Or a hotel with this name one finds a road, a place still more
frequently in many large cities.
To my dishonor I must confess, whom I did not know until recently,
which meaning behind this name hide myself. Now I found it out
there, I cannot reconstruct, which reasons induced the
Charlottenburger owner of manor Stuttmeister 1874 have in such a way
to designate this road put on by him.

In the encyclopedias is the following definition:
Esplanade, (frz., out ital. spianare > ebnen<) those, /-n, free
space before larger (oeffentl.) Buildings or gardens.
Esplanade, those, free space, plant.

So, so. Now one knows however, which was at the time field and
meadow here and which were only parzelliert areas around the
Esplanade after the turn of the century. Thus neither somewhat
public still another free space were in the proximity, if one
actually does not understand the area as free space. That seems to
me however somewhat far fetched. Possible is however a connection
with the William place which can be seen on the map from 1902 to.
Here the Esplanade runs also in the right angle behind the place to
the north. This piece was slammed shut later however not the
Esplanade, but received the name Trienter road. Now, as, today is
called the road is also in such a way and limited in the south, on
approx. 950 m, the Tiroler quarter from east to west. Long time was
it also the urban district border to Prenzlauer mountain. On
these “Prenzlberger” roadside the Esplanade, to which one along-goes
up to the Toblacher road at empty-standing message buildings,
becomes still from allotments begrenzt.Wir goes of the citizen of
Berlin road toward west and after a house block from the late 50ern
stand something put back 2 cube houses, which center of the 70’s as
message standardized construction into the area were set. In my
memory I know a yard with several buildings and a garage here behind
the large Kastanien, in which old vices with wood chassis was still
located. Forget children at that time extremely interesting and
today of many for us long. Sometimes that was the mansion Pohl, one
of the first buildings in the Esplanade, which I had regained again
times on the HP von Willy of man. Please times with the mouse over
the picture go seeing around the pertinent postcard.

The office for federal fortune sold all empty-standing message
houses and is however not except the 3 torn off for the Aldi market
many for living purposes to mansions it did not become converted.
Further building happening here.
For the security of the messages it gave to the Esplanade constant
physical protection by the people police. So that the comrades did
not have to be located always in the rain, two post houses existed .
The consequence was the fact that one does not drive here times with
the bicycle on the sidewalk let alone, an interested view into the
message gardens too much to do could be addressed without “nicely”.
Before the Toblacher STR three blocks of the EEC however address-
moderately to the burner and/or Toblacher the STR come belong on the
right page. Generous green areas and a good tree existence let one
live here unimpaired.

Behind the burner mountain (Andreas yard he place) stand on old
garden area for the MdI (Ministry of the inside) into the 2ten half
of the 70’s built houses. Since here straight is full-reorganized, I
wanted to secure this golden house number at least still
photographically for future generations.
Only the households, which in the Vorgartenpflege, got a golden
house number, to which to national holidays, with the election
turnout and similar causes exemplary into action went to decoration
of the houses. Even if that sounds itself quite reglementiert, the
co-operation in a good household also today still helps in many
situations.
Thus it looks after the reorganization here out.
Raus allotments are forward and in the yard have the people there a
very beautiful green area. Absolutely recommendable however by it
naturally much and no emptying and desires.
At the end of the Esplande one came now into nearly rural area. The
allotments are here cultivated and continuously inhabited as
residential plots with small houses.

Since the entire Esplanade descends easily into this direction, it
comes here with strong, but really only with strong rainfalls to
tidy inundations. Here cars already stood under water because the
rain over swell-increase stand and once, I believed 1973 could we
children even swim here.
Genuinly, not lied…..

An adjacent resident of the quarter wrote me the following:
Hello Mr. Uwe,
to the rear Esplanade I have info. from “old” times. It was in
former times a more or less fastened road.
I grew up after the war “over there” in the Prenzelberg at the
Arnimplatz and we am as children ruebergekommen often here, because
it could be played in the Esplanade beautifully. In this road a bomb
funnel at the other one was. There one could hide oneself well and
throw the “opponent” with stones. The funnels had resulted from bomb
releases during the war, which should actually meet the clearing
race. But interests probably nobody more, or?
Thus I think already, therefore it stands now also here.
End the conclusion still another beautiful panorama picture, taken
up of the Bornholmer bridge. Left block (opinion face) the latter is
whole in the dolomite road, to the right away runs then the
Esplanade. The white veiled block is straight in the change.

In foreseeable time one becomes in the further process the
Esplanade, to which undercrossing of the rapid-transit railway
bridges and the remote course tracks, into the district Wedding,
come into the Gruentaler road. This was also still possible by 13
August 1961,
after it then a rough wall coined/shaped the picture briefly and
blocked the entrance into the Tiroler quarter……… the exit
somehow also for nearly 30 years.

In Charlottenburg there is a Trakehner avenue whereon was found
the “royal Stutamt” which was to supply Trakehner riding horses to
the royal family, it appears.. In the year 1786 the Oberstallmeister
(Colonel all master) count Karl Lindenau selected the seven-jagged
moose shovel as brand character of the horses of this breed. In 1790
The animal vetenary medicine school is opened with 46 pupils. The
Colonel all master, count von Lindau, is one of head masters. In
Charlottenburg was founded one of the world’s first univiersites
where human and animal medicine was taught, as well as dentistry. I
believe my great grandfather Dontor Willian Rudolph Stuttmeister was
trained here, and may have been a head master.

With the title “royal Stutamt” it is now evident the name
Stuttmeister originates from the title Royal Stutampt Meister.
William lived in a manor on Berlin Way according to his marriage
cirtificate which appears to be the “citizen of Berlin Road” that
made its way from Charlottenburg palace, to Berlin.

I suspect William was lured away from his position as Master of the
Horse by wealthy and noble men in the New World who had come to own
Thoroughbreds, like one would own a Ferrari, and needed a Doctor of
Vetenary Medicine to keep them running in good order. Surely the
Bankers and Nobles who founded Tanforan race track could afford the
best Veternaian in the world to tend to their race horses – and put
fillings in their teeth.

Lyons, France, in 1762; the second at Alfort, a suburb of Paris, in
1766; the third at Berlin, in 1792; and the fourth at London, in 1793.

[4] Paris, for example, has become the greatest university in Europe,
exceeding Berlin (1914) in students by approximately 25 per cent and
in expenditures 40 per cent.
[5] “The rise of these great universities is the most epoch-making
feature of our American civilization, and they are to become more and
more the leaders and the makers of our civilization. They are of the
people. When a state university has gained solid ground, it means
that the people of a whole state have turned their faces toward the
light; it means that the whole system of state schools has been
welded into an effective agent for civilization. Those who direct the
purposes of these great enterprises of democracy cannot be too often
reminded that the highest function of a university is to furnish
standards for a democracy.” (Pritchett, Henry S., in Atlantic
Monthly.)
[6] The gifts and bequests for colleges and universities in the
United States, from 1871 to 1916, totaled $647,536,608, and by 1920
probably have reached $750,000,000.

university, was founded at Prague, in Bohemia, in 1806.

Why do you talk so much nonsense in your letter about old Fritz Wilm
[Frederick William III] and about young Fritzchen Wilmchen [Frederick
William IV]? You women should not interfere in politics, you don’t
understand anything about it. But since you so much want to hear
something about your beloved Majesty, I can tell you that His Supreme
Royal Highness will leave for London on the 16th of this month in
order to act as godfather to His Royal Highness, the little English
prince [Edward], and will perhaps visit Paris on the return journey
but most certainly Cologne, and in the spring he is going to
Petersburg to celebrate the silver wedding of his noble brother-in-
law, the All Highest Tsar of Russia, [Nicholas I] then return to
amuse himself in Potsdam in the summer, to spend the autumn on the
Rhine and then to amuse himself in Charlottenburg during the winter.
Now I must go to a lecture.Today against it direction lock, but
naturally not on direct way, is but through the Charlottenburger old
part of town. In certain way we move thereby historically backwards,
because the city hall Charlottenburg stood at the end of the urban
development: When it was inaugurated 1905, Charlottenburg had become
long a large city. That one also regards to the powerful building.
However there was the large city Charlottenburg after the building of
city halls only 15 years. 1920 were eingemeindet it as district
Charlottenburg in large Berlin.
The lock Charlottenburg marks the beginning of the urban development.
As 1705 after the early death of the queen Sophie Charlotte their
lock after it, there ordered king Friedrich I was designated that the
small settlement should receive municipal rights south of few houses
of the lock at the today’s lock road. We induce ourselves thus
historically seen from the year 1905 back to the year 1705.
And at these two data you see also that we are two years too early
actually with this walk to, because in the year 2005 we will
celebrate 2 large anniversaries: 300 years Charlottenburg and 100
years city hall Charlottenburg.
I want to make a remark still the village Lietzow, which is much
older than Charlottenburg and was eingemeindet in the year 1720 into
the at that time still very young small city the Charlottenburg.
Directly behind the city hall today the road alto Lietzow with the
Evangelist church alto Lietzow at the place alto Lietzow runs. There
was once the village meadow of the villages Lietzow. It was mentioned
for the first time in the year 1239. Today only the names remind of
the village. The old village church does not give it long any longer.
This village past Charlottenburgs we will look at ourselves more
exactly with a later Kiezspaziergang.
Today it concerns the establishment and development of the city
Charlottenburg. The “old part of town Charlottenburg” was explained
1983 as the protected building range and opened and described after
this wiederentdeckung also for the interested citizens and citizens.
But 1987 were developed, to the 750-Jahr-Feier Berlin by the
Charlottenburger at that time town planning office the old part of
town path. At 16 stations on large information boards about
historically salient buildings, roads and places one informs. The
sketch of the baroque city plant is kept still complete, and in this
area houses all building pounding are to be found to that soon
300jaehrigen history Charlottenburgs on closest area.
Otto clock avenue
To the right-angled outline of the town the today’s Otto clock avenue
does not belong. It runs diagonally at the edge along. In north south
direction it is limited by Richard Wagner road and lock road, in east
west direction from splinter duration dam and Zillestrasse.
The Otto clock avenue became at the 3. September 1957 after the third
governing mayor designated of Berlin, briefly after it had died to
30.8.1957. Before it the road “citizen of Berlin road” was called,
because it led from Charlottenburg to Berlin, and it was part of the
royal and imperial way of the citizen of Berlin lock to the lock
Charlottenburg. However emperor Wilhelm II is to have refused using
this way since the city hall Charlottenburg had been built, because
the civil owners had earthtraveled themselves, for 88 m a high to
build far away visible tower that was higher than the neighbouring
lock Charlottenburg.
Here we are thus at the first station of the old part of town path,
before the city hall Charlottenburg. You see the information board,
here left beside the main entrance. Symbol and eyecatcher on the
board a design with geometrical elements, included into a circle, is
round around the symbolic representation of the Charlottenburger of
lock tower with a window. The design is to teach us: Architecture is
form and stylistic idiom. Their basic elements are cones, ball and
cylinder.
The boards originate from the year 1987, are thus now and then to be
supplemented, but the historical facts naturally did not change.
Unfortunately are missing two boards, which fifth and ninth, but I
will give you the missing explanations.
1. City hall Charlottenburg Here the old part of town path
Charlottenburg begins. You receive an accompanying brochure with
additional information in the entrance hall of the city hall, we wish
you an energizing discovery round course by the old part of town.
Charlottenburg was occasional until 1920 an independent and a self-
confident and the richest city of Prussia. The city hall with its 88
m high tower was the landmark of the political center. Of the
architects Reinhardt & Suessenguth planned monumental administration
buildings were inaugurated after 6-jaehriger construction period 1905
to the 200-Jahr-Feier Charlottenburgs. It documents partial art
nouveau decoration, in particular by the figuerlichen, ornamentalen
and bildnerischen decoration in the portal range and its rich
innendekorationen. The extension building to rights of 1914, planned
by advice of building of cities the Seeling, occupies first
resemblances to the modern trend beginning with its already more
strictly arranged front. Of in 2. Strongly monument-protected city
hall 1945-1952 the front, the tower and large parts of the interior
equipment in old form damaged world war was again developed. From the
board from to the left the view of the dome of the lock
Charlottenburg, the formerly hoefischen residence falls. In the
foreground lie the Richard Wagner place, one of the local centers of
the citizen city and the next stage of our rundganges.
In the extension building right beside the city hall was originally
savings bank-resounds accommodated, today the Heinrich Schulz
library. 1988 were again covered the roof, by the way style-adversely
with Dutch pan in place by beaver tail. An attendance of the city
hall is by the way worthwhile itself, even if one does not have to
settle affairs of authority. The interior decoration is quite worth
seeing. In the second floor are one memory-resounds the pleasures of
the world wars and the victims of the National Socialist despotism
and a photo gallery of resistance fighters and victims of the LV
rule. Interesting exhibitions are shown occasionally and in many
cases to find them much interesting information. With the office for
citizen there are information brochures to all public offers. Also to
the office for citizen the earlier registration office and the tax
card place belong. Unfortunately we cannot make the tower for safety
reasons accessible for the public. The view from above of
Charlottenburg is fantastisch.
Since the district fusion is here the seat of the
Bezirksbuergermeisterin – my office room is directly over the
entrance into 2. Stick – and the departments of citizen services,
living and personnel; Finances, education and culture; Economics,
real estate properties, organization and libraries; Social, health,
environment and traffic. Seat of the district order meeting and the
other two departments, youth and building industry are the city hall
Wilmersdorf at the Fehrbelliner place.
We cross now diagonally the large crossing and go to the second
station of the old part of town path on the Richard Wagner place.
Richard Wagner place
The road and the place were designated 1934 after Richard wagner.
Before the place was called William place and the road Spreestrasse.
2 Richard Wagner place King Friedrich l and building master Eosander
sketched the “residenzstadt” Charlottenburg to 1705. It represents
the powerful position of the king in the state with the view axles on
the central lock. By the lock road, the senkrechten view axle out,
was put on the baroque outline of the town with the right-angled road
raster. The old market place, today Richard Wagner place, and the
church square, today Gierkeplatz with the Luisenkirche, were the
social centers of the civil city. Until far in 19. Century inside was
to be found a next to each other of hoefisch urban and village life
in the old part of town. The “industrielle revolution” with the
population explosion, the expansion of Berlin and main header right
development plan for the environment of Berlin of 1862 formed also in
Charlottenburg the basis for the boom of construction activity and
the soil speculation of the founder years. Beside the community
centres developed from 1860 to 1880 3 to 4geschossige, starting from
1880 also 5geschossige tenement houses with seitenfluegel and rear
spar from. The preservation of the baroque outline of the town and
the 280jaehrigen structural development the old part of town 1983
became protected building range. The yellow eckhaus No. 5 its hitting
a corner and tower organization stressed of 1908 with marks the
entrance to the old part of town over the Schustehrusstrasse. Since
the building of the house Richard Wagner road 57 of 1899 the typical
old citizens of Berlin hitting a corner tavern exists there.
In the blue new building at the place the project “work is
immediately accommodated”, a common project of the office for
district with the labour office since that 1,9,2002 for the switching
of work to juvenile people on social security. The 100 places are
constantly full and occupied. A goal is the long-term integration of
the young people into the first job market. Components of the project
are intensive consultation and support, training, practical course
and switching. As carriers AMOS, A&QUA GmbH, Grone school Berlin is
involved gGmbH and the international federation IB education center
Berlin.
We go now to far into the Richard Wagner road inside up to the third
station of the old part of town path.
3 Richard Wagner road The old part of town Charlottenburg is since
1984 a promotion emphasis for Stadterneuerungsmassnahrnen. The
localtypical townscape with its houses and yards, roads and places
are repaired, modernized and restored in small steps. First results
are already recognizable. The receipt of the business and enterprises
is a condition for the independent supply of the area

16 lock Charlottenburg Outgoing from the lock and the lock road the
old part of town Charlottenburg developed. The central tracts of the
lock established the building masters Nehring, green mountain and
Eosander in the baroque style of 1695-1712. Cultivations by
Knobelsdorff followed 1740-42 in the late baroque and Rococo style,
1788-91 in the early classicism by long Hans and 1825 of Schinkel an
additional building in the classicism. The lock facing
klassizistischen buildings developed 1855-59. With the pavilions and
the Marstall king Friedrich William IV. covers the underlying
Stallungen of 1740 at the stable route. In the western pavilion the
antiquity museum is and in the eastern pavilion, the Marstall and
mouse tower at splinter duration the dam 7-9 the Egyptian museum. The
Remise in the Nithackstrasse, those at the place of the earlier
Stallungen after the war established buildings and the new transverse
building in the yard, by scientific and cultural mechanisms is used.
In that 1986/87 restored head-end structure in the lock road 69 found
the local history museum Charlottenburg its place. Here an
accompanying brochure with additional information lies ready for
the “old part of town path Charlottenburg” for you. The local history
museum stands here at the correct place, because exactly here before
scarcely 300 years, the urban development Charlottenburgs began 1705.
We arrived thus at the end of our walk at the historical beginning.
Unfortunately none stands more from the first houses. Were the houses
of the chamber Turks Aly at the lock road 4 and Hassan at the lock
road 6 and on the area of the today’s senior hostel at the lock road
2 the 1702 of Eosander of Goete for the hoefischen Colonel all master
Marquis Francois d’Aussaun de Villarnoux build for house, which
served from 1707 to 1847 as city hall, in which also the city court,
a church and since 1811 also still another prison were accommodated.
This house was torn off 1882. Here, south cultural mechanisms in
earlier military buildings, which educate an ensemble, were
established splinter duration of the dam, which is probably the
usually visited cultural center of our district and one of the
largest tourist attractions of Berlin together with the lock
Charlottenburg: The two Stueler buildings became 1855 to 1859 in the
order Friedrich of William IV of Friedrich August Stueler for a
Schwadron of the royal body guard, which guard you Corps built, which
was stationed in Charlottenburg since 1740. Today the world-famous
Egyptian museum is and in the western building the just as
sensational collection mountain-green in the eastern building.
Afterwards to it 1892/93 developed as crew building and officer house
of the Gardes you Corps a building established of the architect bald,
in which today the Broehan museum is accommodated. In the center of
the lock road stands since 1901 the bronze fixed image of the prince
Albrecht of Prussia (1809-1872). He was the youngest brother emperor
Wilhelms I and is here as a rider general explained. The reliefs at
the sides show combat scenes from the French-German war of 1870/71,
at the Albrecht participated. The monument was created by the
sculptor Eugen Boermel and the painter Conrad Freyberg. This is
represented as a regiment comrade prince Albrechts on the eastern
base relief.

This is the oldest received, and/or reconstructed house
Charlottenburgs. Friedrich I, Stadtgruender Charlottenburgs, had the
road system put on by its yard architect Eosander by Goethe, which
sketches properties parzellieren and a sample house. Each building-
willing had to build after this given model draft, because the
developing city should receive a regular appearance. Today only two
examples of these sample houses exist. We have a while ago in the
Haubachstr. 8 one seen. However it was built some years later than
this. Here now thus the oldest community centre Charlottenburgs. For
1712 by Gottfried Berger, a goldschmied and a yellow button caster,
that was built as a craftsman with the building of locks busily was
and itself first with the chamber Turk Aly in the Schlossstr. 3 had
in-rented. Because the development of the again created city
Charlottenburg went only very slowly in front, the king issued to
accept 1711 a regulation, after which craftsmen, who profited by
orders of the yard, lived but only to the rent, a “citizen place” and
cultivate should.

Trakehner avenue
Charlottenburg Wilmersdorf, local part Charlottenburg
Process it runs from Flatowallee and Jesse Owens avenue to
olympic road.
Name off 1923
On behalf of explanation Trakehnen, today Jasnaja Poljana,
area Kaliningrad, Russia. The place was appropriate for East Prussia
until 1945 in the circle Stallupoenen (Ebenrode). 1732 was combined
on arrangement king Friedrich of William I. in Trakehnen the absent-
minded stud departments of the public domains into a “royal Stutamt”.
It was originally meant as yard stud, which should supply with to the
Marstall to Berlin course and riding horses. In the year 1786 the
Colonel all master count Karl Lindenau selected the seven-jagged
moose shovel as fire character of the horses of this breed. When the
army was supplied starting from 1832 of the Remontedepots with own
breed, mechanisms for raising and selection developed in Trakehnen.
1878 appeared volume I of the Stutbuches of the main stud Trakehnen.
In October 1944 the stud was vacated at short notice. From the saved
horses developed after 1945 Nachzuchten among other things in
Hunnesrueck and new house in the being (Lower Saxony) and in Schmoel
and Rantzau in Holstein. Jasnaja Poljana has 500 inhabitants (1997).

Before road No. 18 of the development plan in the property
district army route. To 23.4.1936 a section of the Heilsberger
avenue – between Heilsberger avenue and olympic road – was included
into the Trakehner avenue.

10] The first veterinary school in the world was established at
Lyons, France, in 1762; the second at Alfort, a suburb of Paris, in
1766; the third at Berlin, in 1792; and the fourth at London, in 1793.

[7] The oldest was Charlottenburg (1799), Darmstadt (1822), Carlsruhe
(1825), Munich (1827), Dresden (1828), Nuremberg (1829), Stuttgart
(1829), Cassel (1830), Hanover (1831), Augsburg (1833), and Brunswick
(1835). A similar school, which later developed into a technical
university, was founded at Prague, in Bohemia, in 1806.
