ABOUT JOHN COLTRANE
John William Coltrane (“Trane”) was an American jazz saxophonist and composer. Originally part of the bebop movement, he later became a pioneer in the use of modes and in the development of free jazz. He composed some of jazz’s iconic songs (e.g. Giant Steps), and albums (e.g. A Love Supreme). He also made indelible versions of standards (for example, “My Favorite Things”.) He was also part of some of jazz’s seminal collaborations, notably with Miles Davis, Thelonius Monk, McCoy Tyner, vocalist Johnny Hartman, and with his second wife, Alice. Spirituality was a major part of his life, musical and otherwise.
