Plot
As relations gather for the reading of the wealthy Mr. Mordaunt’s will, Sir John Vesey’s poor cousin Alfred Evelyn and the equally poor Clara part ways for fear that a marriage without money would bring them both misery. Sir John Vesey expects his own daughter Georgina to be the will’s main beneficiary, but this instead turns out to be Evelyn, previously employed by Vesey as his secretary to make Vesey appear more generous (and thus more wealthy) than he really is. Evelyn decides that – if Clara would not marry him poor – she is too principled to accept him now he is rich and so leaves their relationship broken off.
President Donald Trump ramped up his attacks against the Smithsonian Institution over the weekend by issuing an executive action that ordered new “temporary exhibits or signage” to be installed outside the National Museum of American History (NMAH), “warning” visitors about “the Ideological Capture” of the museum.
The “ideological capture” is a reference to allegations that the White House made against leaders at NMAH in a blistering July 4 report released by the White House Domestic Policy Council, accusing the museum and its leaders of presenting “a radical view of American history.”
The report includes dozens of examples of exhibits and materials in exhibits that the White House has determined to be examples of “radical activism.”
“Such signage shall notify visitors that the Museum exhibits should be renovated consistent with the findings in the Report and direct visitors to locations and resources for accurate information regarding America’s history,” Trump’s executive order states.
Ralston, and his partner’s decision to build the theater was inspired by the acting of John McCullough and Lawrence Barrett, who he felt deserved a theater of their own to showcase their talent. Their belief that it would prove a lucrative investment was proven right. The theatre was successful beyond wildest expectations. The Corinthian-style temple of amusement, which had cost a quarter of a million dollars, opened on January 18, 1869, with a performance of Bulwer-Lytton‘s play Money.[6][4] it was the leading theater in the city until its demolition in 1888. There were elaborate murals of San Francisco painted by local artist G.J. Denny and a panoramic view of San Francisco Bay entitled “Entrance to the Golden Gate,” on the drop curtain. The theater claimed to be the first on the West Coast to use calcium light (limelight) with parabolic reflectors, aimed from the house, to light up the stage.[7]

The Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest

I think I have a winner with this sentence;
“Charles is my avatar that I will employ against my enemies as I promenade through their mundane minds, full of fake love for the chiffon Jesus, and a six pack of beer.”

“It was a dark and stormy night; the rain fell in torrents — except at occasional intervals, when it was checked by a violent gust of wind which swept up the streets (for it is in London that our scene lies), rattling along the housetops, and fiercely agitating the scanty flame of the lamps that struggled against the darkness.” — Edward George Bulwer-Lytton, Paul Clifford (1830)
Announcing the 2012 Lyttoniad Contest Winners
The rules to the Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest are childishly simple:
Each entry must consist of a single sentence but you may submit as many entries as you wish. (One fellow once submitted over 3,000 entries.)
Sentences may be of any length but we strongly recommend that entries not go beyond 50 or 60 words. Entries must be “original” (as it were) and previously unpublished.
Surface mail entries should be submitted on index cards, the sentence on one side and the entrant’s name, address, and phone number on the other.
E-mail entries should be in the body of the message, not in an attachment (and it would be really swell if you submitted your entries in Arial 12 font). One e-mail may contain multiple entries.
Entries will be judged by categories, from “general” to detective, western, science fiction, romance, and so on. There will be overall winners as well as category winners.
The official deadline is April 15 (a date that Americans associate with painful submissions and making up bad stories). The actual deadline is June 30.
The contest accepts submissions every day of the livelong year.
Wild Card Rule: Resist the temptation to work with puns like “It was a stark and dormy night.“
Finally, in keeping with the gravitas, high seriousness, and general bignitude of the contest, the grand prize winner will receive … a pittance.
You may inflict your entries either by electronic or surface mail.
