The Book of Lazarus
Lazarus and Martha were sick with the horror they felt. There sister could not see the extreme danger that was about to consume her life. She was in shock at the sight of all the death and bloody violence swirling around her. She wanted to make it all go away. She wanted to put the intestines back in the young woman she taught torah to, She was a salmon trying to swim up a stream of blood. Then…..he spotted her! He was Greek. He ran in the Olympics in Athens two years prior. He was recruited by Pontius Pilate to be his bodyguard. He recalled the instruction Josephus shouted to Lazarus.
“You and Martha go to my boat. I will try to find Maritima!”
Mary heard a quiet voice amongst the screams of agony.
“Run Maritima! Run very fast!” She recognized her brothers voice. She looked around for him. Then, there he was, two hundred yards away standing with his beloved sister. They were giving arm signals toward the fleeing Jews. That’s when she felt him. He was working his way through the mob. He was ten feet away. Mary bolted like a wolf that had a stone at her. She ran five steps and he threw away his heavy shield an Helmut. She felt his giant hand grab her shoulder, but it slipped down her arm due to the blood. Now it tried to lock her wrist in a death grip. But, again the blood freed her, and she took two more steps! Then she felt the tip of his sword poke into her back, very close to her spinal cord! This filled Mary with rage. She turned to face her deadly killer. He growled at her, and gave her an ugly. evil look. He wore the blood of her friends.
“I spit in your face!” and she did, And now she was out of the blocks!
As part of the ritual of becoming a woman, Mary was sent to tend to her uncles’ flock of sheep in the grassy hills belonginf to the Tribe of Benjamin. There were still patches of sacred pine trees that could not be cut down. Many wanted this done because an occasional wolf would find shelter in them, and prey on the innocent lambs, and elderly sheep who could not longer run. They could be purchased cheaply for the temple sacrafice.
On the third day, a lone wolf tested her. He came boldly close to flock, and gave her a look. She returned the look. And when he took three steps toward a lamb – Mary was up put of her crouch and after him
“Run Mary – Very Fast!”
The wolf was startled when she threw down her croft so she could run – faster! The wolf ran thirty yards, and thought that was it. Mary was ten feet away, when he shot back up, and started running as fast as he could. Those who saw Mary run that day, and following days, were amazed.
Then one day she came on duty with a package containing the raw mutton of an old goat. She cut off a piece of it, put it in her mouth, chews on it for awhile. Then, she spit the piece in her hand and tossed it to the wolf. who did not sneak up on it, or, look afraid of Mary in any way.

Maritima made long, high strides that employed all the muscles in her buttox and legs. She could feel the Roman Wolf make grunting sounds as he grabbed for her. Martha and Lazarus could not stop from make arm signals.
“Run Mary – as fast as you can!” Martha began to cry. Her brother was given a life-saving idea. He grabbed the long boat pole and laid it on the deck. Mary was fifty yards away. The wolf was fifty-five. At ten yards away, Lazarus yelled
“JUMP MARY – AS LONG AS YOU CAN!”
By the time it registered in Mary’s mind, this was the only thing left to do, at fifteen feet from the edge of the pier – she was airborne! Lazarus raised the pole making sure it got under the armored girdle – and the wolf was lifted four feet in the air as the end of the pole caught his gonads! Fifty Roman soldiers turned their heads when they heard, and felt the beasts pain. The force of his charge – pushed the boat away from the dock! Mary cleared the the railing – by inches!
When the six pursuing soldiers arrived at the end of the pier, the boat was ten feet out into the harbor. They turned to attend to their fallen soldier. His swearing was….
Biblical!
