The Spanish House of Bourbon was upset by the Louisiana Purchase, largely because Spain had only recently ceded the territory to France (in 1800/1802) with the understanding it would not be transferred to a third party. Spain viewed the sale as a violation of their agreement, which had promised to return the land to Spain if France did not keep it.

Key points regarding the Bourbon reaction:

  • Violated Agreements: Spain, ruled by the House of Bourbon, expected Napoleon to honor the secret treaty (Treaty of San Ildefonso) that mandated if France left Louisiana, it would revert to Spain, not the United States.
  • Strategic Concerns: The Spanish crown was unhappy about the massive expansion of the United States, which they saw as a threat to their neighboring territories, including Mexico.
  • Reversed Policy: Spain had originally hoped that having France in control of Louisiana would act as a buffer against American expansion.
  • Lack of Control: Though Spain was unhappy, they were essentially powerless to stop Napoleon from selling the territory to the United States. The Library of Congress (.gov)The Library of Congress (.gov) +4

However, the primary, active opposition to the sale came from American Federalists, who considered it unconstitutional and worried about the political shift, not from active, public resistance by the Spanish monarchy, who had to accept the deal.

The House of Bourbon in Spain did not initially object to acquiring the Louisiana Territory from France in 1762, viewing it as a strategic buffer to protect Mexican silver mines from British expansion. However, Spain was reluctant to return it, only doing so in 1800-1802 due to pressure from Napoleon, who exchanged it for the small Kingdom of Etruria, a deal largely forced upon King Charles IV. Historic New Orleans CollectionHistoric New Orleans Collection +4

Key details:

  • Initial Acquisition (1762): France ceded Louisiana to Spain to keep it out of British hands and compensate for Spanish losses during the Seven Years’ War.
  • The Return (1800/1802): Napoleon forced Spain to return Louisiana via the secret Treaty of San Ildefonso (1800) and Treaty of Aranjuez (1801) in exchange for the Kingdom of Etruria in Italy, a maneuver driven by Napoleon’s desire to rebuild a French empire in America.
  • Spanish Concerns: While Spain was largely forced to return the territory, they were unhappy with the subsequent 1803 sale of Louisiana by France to the United States, as it removed the buffer zone and placed a rapidly growing power on their border.

While Spanish authorities were generally unhappy about returning it to France, the Bourbons in Spain did not mount strong opposition in 1800-1802 due to their weakened state and pressure from Napoleon.
