The Windsor Labyrinth at Belmont

I have written about Rosamond and The Labyrinth till I am a blue rose in the face! In the top pic we see Alexander Spencer Churchill who is kin to Princess Diana, and Churchill. He grew up in Blenheim Palace that contained the Labyrinth at Woodstock where King Henry kept Rosamond Clifford who I was going to use Rena Easton as a model for her portrait. Then I discovered she was married to Sir Ian Easton Commander of the British Defence Staff Washington that was founded by Winston Churchill in order to keep the Alliance between the United States and Great Britain strong after the end of World War Two.
What I suggest is Governor Newsom and Vice President Kamala Harris invite a British Battleship to sail into the Golden Gate and dock for an extended stay. The military posturing with China is going to cost the American taxpayer much in order to protect these two Nation’s interest in the China Sea. I see a reunion at the Palace Hotel of related families, and, a Labyrinth built at Twin Pine Park in Belmont where Oktoberfest will be celebrated. I even see a German Battleship and Harry and Meghan being the hosts.

Part 2: The first RNVR CO of HMS Venomous

Lt Cdr A. Derek A. Lawson RNVR left HMS Middleton in March 1944 and before his next posting married Flora Bleckinridge Fermor-Hesketh, daughter of the 1st Baron Hesketh (1881-1944), in London on the 12 April 1944. When her father, Rupert Baring, died in July her brother Frederick became the 2nd Baron Hesketh and lived at the family seat, Easton Neston, in Northamptonshire. She was the former wife of the 4th Baron Revelstoke and had two sons, John Baring born in 1934 and James Cecil Baring in 1938.
Derek Lawson was marked out for a senior position in the Legal Department of the Royal Navy but the Admiralty wanted him to have a few months command experience before taking up this appointment. He was given command of HMS Venomous while she was completing a refit at Falmouth in June 1944. Venomous had limped back to Falmouth from the Mediterranean in October 1943, her engines in a bad state. Most of her armaments and one of her two boilers (and funnels) had been removed. She was no longer a fighting ship and was to be given the humble task of towing targets for torpedoes launched by Barracuda aircraft based on the Isle of Man.

I have talked to Anne Farmer-Fermor, and Patrick Sharon the second, about the renewal of the Sharon Family reunions at the Palace Hotel, that William Ralston built, that his partner, William Sharon, came to own. Anne was communicated in person with members of the Hesketh family in Britain, and is friendly with Baron Revelstoke whom she was hoping to get an invite through to William Windsor’s wedding. The Baron is kin to the founder of Baring & Brothers Co. a British banking company.
William Ralston appears to be the Grand Master of the Oddfellows, and may have invited the Oddfellows of Lodge 17 in San Francisco to come celebrate with the new Oddfellows of Belmont, in Belmont. Did he build the Palace Hotel in order to accommodate Oddfellows from all over America – and the world?

Hi Jon- These I know- the Heskeths married into my side- the Fermors so they are distant cousins of mine. The Quakers, Methodists were the Fermor side- they never owned slaves like Witherspoon did. I had heard about the Presbyterian strong influence- and how the Calvinists were more fighters. On my side we have the lovers, not fighters. Duke of Marlborough is a title in the Peerage of England. It was created by Queen Anne in 1702 for John Churchill, 1st Earl of Marlborough (1650–1722), the noted military leader. The name of the dukedom refers to Marlborough in Wiltshire. It is one of the few titles in the peerage which allows for suo jure female inheritance, and the only current dukedom to do so. Churchill had been made Lord Churchill of Eyemouth (1682) in the Scottish peerage, Baron Churchill of Sandridge (1685), and Earl of Marlborough (1689) in the Peerage of England. Shortly after her accession to the throne in 1702, Queen Anne made Churchill the first Duke of Marlborough and granted him the subsidiary title Marquess of Blandford. In 1678, Churchill married Sarah Jennings (1660–1744), a courtier and influential favourite of the queen. They had seven children, of whom four daughters married into some of the most important families in Great Britain;[1] one daughter and one son died in infancy. He was pre-deceased by his son, John Churchill, Marquess of Blandford, in 1703; so, to prevent the extinction of the titles, a special Act of Parliament was passed. The succession is as follows: The heirs-male of the 1st Duke’s body lawfully begotten; his eldest daughter and the heirs-male of her body lawfully begotten; his second and other daughters, in seniority, and the heirs-male of their bodies lawfully begotten; his eldest daughter’s oldest daughter and the heirs male of her body lawfully begotten; his eldest daughter’s second and other daughters, in seniority, and the heirs-male of their bodies lawfully begotten all other daughters of his daughters, in seniority, and the heirs-male of their bodies lawfully begotten; and other descendants into the future in like fashion, with the intent that the Marlborough title never become extinct. Succession to the title under the first and second contingencies have lapsed; holders of the title from the 3rd Duke trace their status from the third contingency. It is now very unlikely that the Dukedom will be passed to a woman or through a woman, since all the male-line descendants of Anne Spencer, Countess of Sunderland – including the line of the Earls Spencer and the Spencer-Churchill family – would have to become extinct. If that were to happen, the Churchill titles would pass to the Earl of Jersey, the heir-male of Anne Villiers, Countess of Jersey, daughter of Elizabeth Egerton, Duchess of Bridgewater, a younger daughter of the first Duke. The 1st Duke’s principality title of Mindelheim became extinct either on the return of the land to Bavaria or on his death, as the Empire operated Salic Law, which prevented female succession.

April 24. Artist Maxfield Parrish met with Frederick Sharon, owner of the almost completed Palace Hotel on April 20, 1909. From Windsor, Vermont, on April 24, 1909, Parrish wrote: “I will make for the barroom in the Palace Hotel, San Francisco, a painting measuring about 6′ x 16′ for the sum of six thousand dollars to be delivered on the first of November 1909. If you will kindly acknowledge the receipt of this, as far as I am concerned, it will be all the agreement necessary.” Current 2013 quotes state that the art would sell for $5 to $7 million at auction.

December 20. “The Pied Piper”, famed painting by artist Maxfield Parrish, which for 14 years since the advent of Prohibition had been stored at the M.H. de Young Memorial Museum, amid much ceremony, was returned home to the Palace Hotel bar. California’s new State liquor control law, making it legal to sell hard liquor by the drink in hotels, restaurants, clubs and the like, became effective today. “The Pied Piper” was returned to its place in the old bar. Hotel manager Archibald H. Price planned a luncheon in celebration of the occasion. The new Pied Piper was soon acclaimed as “one of the World’s Seven Great Bars.”

March 26. “City Honors Chinese Leaders at the Most Magnificent Banquet of a Generation.” Long before the scheduled 8:30 p.m. banquet, the Palace Hotel’s Garden Court, Concert and Rose rooms were jammed to capacity. A total of 2,100 actually attended. Thousands more thronged through the lobby and corridors of the hotel hoping to see the “great lady.” The Garden Court was “ablaze” with flowers and flags. For the first time since the United States entered World War II in December 1941, formal wear for both men and women was de rigueur. The head table, shared with Governor and Mrs. Earl Warren and San Francisco Mayor Angelo Rossi, was covered with a red Chinese cloth and adorned with huge Chinese bowls containing red, white and blue flowers. It was set at the north end of the room. The dinner, highlighted by rare food and vintages, came to a dramatic conclusion when hotel’s head chef, carrying a tray upon which was a magnificently illuminated pagoda, followed by a parade of waiters, filed into the three banquet rooms carrying miniature pagodas on trays serving what was referred to as “pechepagode Madame Chiang Kai-shek” — a peach dessert created especially for her.

Fall. Mrs. William B. Johnstone, owner of the Palace Hotel and a descendant of William Sharon, sells the caravansary to Sheraton Hotels of America for $6,500,000. Conrad Hilton, who had offered $4,500,000, was outbid. Once famed Palace Hotel menus underwent major restructuring. In an effort to shave funds from the operating budget, Oysters Kirkpatrick, a tradition on dinner menus, were “banished.” In their stead, lamb chops, and string beans were added to the menu. Sheraton-Palace management declared that “it is no longer possible to maintain all the costly traditions that sentiment once dictated […] our predecessors, the Sharon family, had been more intent on maintaining the traditions of the past than the vitality of the profit and loss statement.” Under Sheraton direction, Palace Hotel rooms were redecorated. Upon completion, every room, coast to coast in Sheraton hotels, is decorated identically.

San Francisco’s Sheraton-Palace was acquired by a Japanese corporation, the Kyo – ya which, translated, means “Fun House.” This corporation retained the services of Sheraton Hotels of America to provide management.

On March 22, 2013, the renowned Maxfield Parrish Pied Piper painting began its journey to New York for restoration. The extensive preservation process was handled with extreme care and the art returned to its original glory. On August 22, 2013, the Palace Hotel proudly unveiled the newly restored painting and celebrated its homecoming. The Mayor awarded the Palace a proclamation officially naming August 22 Pied Piper Day in San Francisco.

During the Summer of Love, and the renewal of Bohemian activity in the Bat Area on a grand scale, only I seemed to be aware of Sterling, London, and Joaquin ‘The Trail Blazers’ who had gone before us into the wilderness, and carved out Bohemian Sanctuaries, groves, wherein we worshipped the Queen of Druids – our Grand Bohemian Muse!

With the return of the Muse that Bill and I followed, and who rendered my late sister a world famous artist, can the re-capture of the Creative Spirit that has fallen into hands of the Un-Creative of the World – commence!
In discovering that my great grandfather, Carl Janke, was the first to build a Bohemian Community and Retreat in Belmont California – that he co-founded – put my family history next door to the Bohemian Grove in Monte Rio.
Five years ago after learning Rena Easton was married to a Commodore, and lived in the Isle of Wight, I had fantasies of what happened after we met. After my friend Bryan drops us off in Oakland – after he tried to kidnap Rena on Pismo Beach – I drive her down to the Oakland Estuary where my seventy foot yacht is moored. WE are now all alone down in the industrial train yards. There is not a soul around. I take her hand and guide her aboard. We go down below where I perform a superb removal of her apprehension. Why shouldn’t she be leery of this dark sailor man, this Hermit of the Sea.
Above is a photo of my small sailboat that I lived on. I was a tad ashamed to show it, until Rena told me in her letter about her small dwelling.
When Rosemary was showing us the family photos, her children perked up when we beheld these antique people having a picnic in the Oakland Redwoods where we used to have picnics.
“Who are these people, mother?”
“Those are your father’s people, the Bohunks.”
“Bohunks!” We exclaimed. “What’s a Bohunk?”
“Bohunks are Bohemians.” our mother answered with some concern.
What harm could it do these innocent children to know they have Bohunk blood in their veins? As long as they never learn my father was a Hillbilly, smitten by a Redneck Muse that he named ‘Ravola of Thunder Mountain’.

There were old growth redwood trees near Belmont and Redwood city that were harvested. Carl Janke built his theme park on Belmont Creek a watershed that came down from the hills. This was an ideal habitation for giant redwoods that could be seen by sailors on the bay. It must have been an incredible and beautiful sight that would have appealed to a German who traitinally love the forests.
“In the hundred years since the Huddart Park area was logged, a new forest of redwoods and other trees have grown, covering much of the evidence of this early logging activity. However, still visible are large stumps of the virgin redwoods and “skid roads” over with the teams of oxen dragged logs to the sawmills.
If Janke brought his six portable houses around the Cape on a Clipper in 1848, instead of 1849 as some say, then Carl did not do so to sell them to gold miners who struck it rich, but to create a utopian city and haven for people all over the world who would come to behold these giant redwoods. Were the founders of Bohemian Grove inspired by Janke’s Turnverien free-thinker dream? Jack London, George Sterling, and Joaquin Miller, were members of the Bohemian Grove. Miller knew the Stuttmeisters who had a farm down the hill from ‘The Heights’ where artists and poets met. Miller wrote ‘City Beautiful’ . Above are photos of the Stuttmeisters and Brodericks having a picnic in the redwoods. Miller planted trees all over the Oakland Hills. The Stuttmeisters built forty home in Fruit Vale on streets they named after trees. Here are your Hobbits, your Gandalf’s, your Magical Men that made California a Mecca for those who use their mind, believe thinking is the best way to travel.

Janke’s park offered all the necessary provisions for an outdoor holiday, which included a dance pavilion to accommodate 300 large glassless windows, a conical roof and a dance floor situated around a large spreading tree. The pavilion was also equipped with a bar, an ice cream parlor and a restaurant.
Months after my sister’s death I went to the Sacramento Library and looked at microfish about a legal battle between the heirs of Carl Janke’s estate in Belmont that appeared in the San Francisco Call. I lost the copy I made of that article that I am certain mentioned William O. Stuttmeister, and the sisters of Augusta Stuttmeister-Janke. Carl’s sons did not want Minni and Cornillia, to have anything, and one brother (or cousin) took their side, and was cut out. This has to be William, or W. JANKE. “The bride was attended by Miss Alice Stuttmeister, a sister of the groom, and Miss Minnie Janke, a sister of the bride, as bridesmaids, and Dr. Muldownado and Wm. Janke, a cousin of the bride, were groomsmen.” When Victor Presco turned twenty-one, the the Janke spinsters offered him a moving company in San Francesco. Apparently they saw him as the heir to the Stuttmiester legacy, and the Hope of a return to former glory because they had no children. How about their brother, William? Rosemary said this; “Your father was a made man.” Two days ago, in an e-mail, my cousin Daryl Bulkley confirmed my suspicions that ‘Stuttmeister’ was not the original name of the folks from Berlin. I suspect they were a branch of the Glucksburg family who became Calvinist Evangelicals, and perhaps Rosicrucians. In the top photo we see Minni and Corniallia Janke in the family vault that William Stuttmeister purchased for $10,000 dollars to put the reains of the Jankes and Stuttmeisters in after they were evicted from the Oddfellow cemetery. That William Ralston was a Oddfellow that put up a large sum of money to establish the Oddfellows in Germany – and perhaps elsewhere – makes me wonder about his alleged suicide by plunging into the bay. I am reading articles on the internet about the Oddfellows being the founders of the Welfare State in America, where being charitable to the poor, the infirmed, and the widows, was paramount. They also paid much attention to burying their dead, which suggests they believed in a different hereafter. As a theologian I have pointed out the strange raising of the dead in Matthew 27:53 at the very moment of Jesus’ alleged death.
I suspect Judas was given thirty pieces of silver to purchase Jesus’ tomb, and Jesus was about to practice the ancient Judaic ritual called of the RESUSCITATION, where the soul of the diseased enters the body of another. I believe this is why those who take the Nazarite Vow are bid to keep their distance from the dead. That the Oddfellows titled women as Rebekahs, suggests they are Rechabites, who have been associated with the Nazarites who composed the first Christian church called “The Church of God”. That Jesus came to be seen as God “the Father” is a usurption that began with Paul of Tarsus. That the fall of the Oddfellows in the Bay Area happened overnight, and all traces of their demise, all but disappeared, tells me there was a real Judas and purge. That Daryl pointed out in her research that we knew next to nothing about the Stuttmeisters, whose tomb was lost until seven years ago, tells me William Stuttmeister retired to the Geronimo Valley a disillusioned man, who played a rare violin, and left his Stuttmeister-Janke legacy to his housekeeper. And then he is dead, his remains put in the vault that I went to visit with my daughter and grandson. Before I left for California I told my friend Joy Gall, that I wanted a AA coin to put in this tomb in honor of Christine Rosamond Benton whose funeral fell on he first sober birthday in AA. As I lined up to view my sister in her casket, I did consider the Nazarite Vow I took in 1989. As fate would have it, I ended up putting this coin in William Oltman Stuttmeisters crypt because there was an opening made by the earthquake of 1989.

When I entered the tomb of my ancestors and sat down on the marble bench, I noticed the letter A made of brass lying behind the faux fern plant. I picked it up. It was the A in JANKE that had come lose in the earthquake. I looked up at the stained glass window and read; “In loving memory of my beloved wife, Augusta Stutteister,” Was Augusta the Angel that came to visit my sisters? Janke, a cousin of the bride, were groomsmen. The Rev. A. L. Brewer
of San Mateo performed the beautiful and impressive ceremony under an arch composed of flowers and greens very prettily arranged, after which the guests pressed forward and offered their congratulations. The bride was attired in a very pretty and becoming costume of the crushed strawberry shade, and wore a corsage bouquet of orange
blossoms. She carried a handsome bouquet of white flowers. After the guests had paid their compliments the bride and groom led the way to the dining-room, where the wedding dinner was served and the health
of the newly married pair was pledged. The feast over, the guests joined in the dance, and the hours sped right merrily, interspersed with music singing and recitations, until the bride and groom took their departure amid a shower of rice and good wishes. Many beautiful presents were received. Dr. and Mrs. Stuttmeister left Thursday morning for Santa Cruz and Monterey, where they will spend the honeymoon.
