Belle’s Pirate Poem

Belle Burch e-mailed me and asked me what would be a good time for her to come to Oakdale Street to modle for me – nude if I wanted! She sent me her poem. I was shocked, I texted her back and said it appears you are using the homeless to enrich yourself. Belle sent my message to her compatriot, Alley Valkyrie, who sent me this THREAT.

“I’m going to make this very simple for you. I don’t know if you know who I am, but I sure as hell know who you are, and when you fuck with my friends, you fuck with me. Stop writing about Belle or I am going to make your life very difficult. I mean it. If I see one more word about her on your blog, your FB, or anywhere else, I will make sure that you experience all the fear and discomfort that she is experiencing right now. And no, this isn’t a physical threat, so don’t try to play victim. Frankly, I encourage you to contact EPD, as they already know all about you. I will not do anything illegal, but mark my word you will regret it if you write one more word about her. I will make sure that the entire community knows exactly how much of a sick fuck you are. Your picture, your name, and “samples” of your writing will be posted on every bulletin board in town. There will not be a single person in the Eugene/Springfield area who won’t know that you’re a sick stalker who won’t leave a stalker who won’t leave a young girl alone. Cut it out. Now. This is your first, last, and only warning.”

I told Alley that Belle never aske me to stop communicating with me. Ten minutes I get a call from Belle….”Do not call me or e-mail me!”

I called the Springfield Police, and two officers read Valkyries threat. I then spend to hours wieghing my options. I could take down all my posts, or, I could fiend the head of SLEEPS and demand they give an accounting of all monies given to them. I chose the latter. I wrote Alley and said;

I am a newspaperman, and I owe it to my peers to not cave to threats!”

Listen again to the Oakdale Witchhunt video. Belle is mentioned, and the Six negate I am a reporter for my paper. I will now contact an attorney and sue everyone involved for violating my Civil Rights.

The FBI said this might be a case of RACKETTEERING when I described the video of cars stopping at Whoville to donate, and, the video I took at Art Walk was a covert Fundraiser – with their attorney watch over the…………..POOR VICTIMS! Haffner dropped of gleaned produce, Is she connected with them?

Our Democracy is on the eve of disctruction because of the VICTIM GAME. It is just reveal Trump is in the Epstein Files.

Play, both videos at the same time.

Attorney General Pam Bondi attends a cabinet meeting hosted by President Donald Trump at the White House in Washington, DC, on Tuesday, July 8, 2025. Evan Vucci/APCNN —

When Attorney General Pam Bondi briefed President Donald Trump in May on the Justice Department’s review of the documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case, she told him that his name appeared in the files, sources familiar with the discussion told CNN.

The conversation, which also included Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, was characterized by two White House officials as a “routine briefing” that covered the scope of the Justice Department’s findings. Trump’s name appearing in the files, they said, was not the sole focus of the discussions.

Bondi also raised in the meeting that several names of high-profile figures were also mentioned, and that investigators did not find evidence of a so-called client list or evidence refuting that Epstein died by suicide, the officials said.

Belle’s Pirate Poem

If you live in the West, then you want to be a Pirate, or, a Witch when you grow up. I became both at the age of twelve when I became an Artist and a Writer.

Here is Belle’s Pirate Poem. She was going to Lane College studying literature because she wants to be a Witch (Writer). Then, she met Ambrose, the wanna-be Pirate Captain. Together, with Alley Valkyrie, they shanghaied the Drug Cannibals that beat on drums in Wayne Morris Plaza on Saturday. These savages attracted young women who danced naked from the waist up. They now launched a Pirate Ship called ‘The Sleeping Dragon’ that did try to take ‘The Royal Rosamond’ as a prize. But, I repelled them. In a noble declaration, I became their competition. This is when they brought in their She-demons.

This is why I am forgiving of Belle, even why I will always love her. She sending me her REVEALING poem was the so naive.  She then asks me how it makes me feel. You got to laugh! When you remove the hood-winking, Belle’s plan was an old and simple one. Found Never Never Land! Never grow up! And have the Squares foot the bill.

Here is what I told Belle in an e-mail I sent her

“The truth is, I did not like your poem, because I hate conspiracy radio. I want to do my own radio show called the Authentic Human Being Show. I did not like your poem because it says very little about YOU and your advocacy for the homeless. OCCUPY has a core group of people who want to remain anonymous. In my book they do not get to use the homeless as their human shield so they can own a cloak of invisibility in order to secretly push their ideaology. I can, and will expose that! Like the Pied Piper I will, put forth a better idea!”

“I called the Horsehead about a half hour ago, and they told me they have a jukebox that allows your song to be played before the songs in front of you, if you feed it more money.

“At the Horsehead,
there is a touch screen machine
where you get to choose
what music is being played.
You pay money for this privilege.
If you pay more money,
your songs get played
first.

If you order food at Jameson’s,
it gets run across the street
from Horsehead.
Luckey’s has the best pool tables,
and a fantastic little Mexican foodcart lovechild
that only accepts cash.”

It is clear to any sane person I have integrity and severed my relationship with her because she is using money she collects for the poor – to party down!  I was disgusted when I read this in Belle’s poem. All of a sudden the image of the Beautiful Homeless waif went – poof! In her place stood Bella Donna, Pirate Queen, laden with booty, and cruising the Caribbean for more treasure! I can not hate Belle after she was so foolish to send me this poem. She was doing great, having fun, concealing who she was, that she ran with a crew of cut-throats. She has food run across the street as she runs the table while downing another tankard of ale!

All the threats and slander, have come from Belle Burch. Because my late mother and sister were dragged into the Racketeering, and connected with the rape charges against UofO basketball, I have informed my attorney a suit might be called for to clear my good name and the name of my artistic family. I also talked to the FBI. I will call the IRS next.

Here is ‘The Family’ that was arrested together. The Family has not solved the homeless problem that has been around since the dawn of time. They are running a Racket that they use strong-arm tactics and extortion to protect and perpetuate. If you give them money you are feeding their resolve to hurt anyone that gets in their way.

By the way, Why “John Ambrose”? Is that your middle name? Nom de plume? Highly synchronistic, as my current partner’s legal first name is Ambrose. I’m very curious about this.
Also, I thought you preferred to spell your name without the “h”?

Here’s the poem I said I’d send you.
Haven’t read any of your emails yet, will get to that soon.

I walked through what is known

Belle, I am confused. You took my number when we met after I told you I am an author out to preserve the Beat-Bohemian-Hippie culture. You said you were a radical, and I assumed you were an advocate for the homeless. Why then have you not talked about your radical homeless work with me when I shared at length my work with the homeless here in Springfield? From whom did you get an interest in Bohemians? Who is your boyfriend? Is he a radical advocate for the homeless? Has he been involved with OCCUPY?

I am trying to give YOU something very important. I know a information game when I see one. Dan Brown and his wife used to lurk on the yahoo.groups I belonged to that discussed the Templars, the Holy Grail, and the Masons. I have argued with members of the Sinclair family. The Davinci Code was a rip-off of OUR studies. Why are you examining me? Has it occurred to you that I am a Bohemian worth saving?

I married a very radical woman who was married to Thomas Pynchon. My best friend was good friends with Michael McClure and Jim Morrison. I was close with members of the Brotherhood of Eternal Love.

I asked you to help me get this information in a format that can be published, so that I can own credibility to put forth my knowledge. Once I am published, I wont’ be examined by people who have a selfish interest, and thus their finding are negative. I want your positive input and help. How many questions has your boyfriend put to you about me? If he wants to know anything about me, he can give me a call!  If you don’t understand why I am trying to give you something, ask and thou shall receive. I will tell you the truth – if I feel you are on my side!

The truth is, I did not like your poem, because I hate conspiracy radio. Like the Pied Piper I will, put forth a better idea!

An article on the Beats says there is no direct connection between the  Pynchon and the Beat writers. I am that connection!

I want some feedback on our movie. I want you to sign a non-disclosure contract. You may not used any information I have shared with you without my permission and for any reason I deem injurious to my preservation and cause as agreed to at our first meeting.

John Monroe This man is dangerous. Regardless of whether he intends or would use physical violence, he is being emotional abusive and manipulative. He is clearly mentally ill, but he is also highly intelligent. Based on my research he comes from a family with incredible abuse but also high capacity. (http://rosamond.com/about andhttps://rosamondpress.wordpress.com/…/christine-rosamond/)

This guy isn’t making simple errors. He is a very ill person. But he is also highly abusive, and we should be protecting those who are being targeted. On top of that, I don’t see how this isn’t also a case of male domination. Regardless of his mental space, that is patriarchical BS. Our community should be made aware that he is a threat to young women.

A racket is a service that is fraudulently offered to solve a problem, such as for a problem that does not actually exist, will not be affected, or would not otherwise exist. Conducting a racket is racketeering.[1] Particularly, the potential problem may be caused by the same party that offers to solve it, although that fact may be concealed, with the specific intent to engender continual patronage for this party. A prototype is the protection racket, wherein a person or group indicates that they could protect a store from potential damage, damage that the same person or group would otherwise inflict, while the correlation of threat and protection may be more or less deniably veiled, distinguishing it from the more direct act of extortion.

Racketeering is often associated with organized crime, and the term was coined by the Employers’ Association of Chicago in June 1927 in a statement about the influence of organized crime in the Teamsters union.[2]

Commy Witch Captures Beauty

Posted on June 3, 2022 by Royal Rosamond Press

This photo – is already famous! It will begin my autobiography ‘Capturing Beauty’.

After the death of my homeless friend, I decided it was time to stop grieving, and go to the Art Walk. There, I encountered Belle who hid her identity. Why? In a e-mail I decided to reveal my inner-self and sent her pics of me with energy around me. I suspect she shared all our private correspondence with Alley Valkyrie – The Queen of The Square – who became threatened. I could stake a claim – to all that she had marked as – HERS! If I got Belle away from her and her Downtown Cult, then I could raise MY BANNER over Ken Kesey Square. Alley lies when she says

“approximately fifty people spontaneously appeared in Kesey Square,”

Their video of the gathering was narrated by attorney Jean Stacey – who admits how controlled and orchestrated her activists are. That video was removed. The video above was made a month before I met Belle who just got arrested. She said nothing to me about her comrades who had created a highly controlled SIMM CITY HOMELESS ART COLONY in downtown Eugene – and were hitting people up for money! This took away from – REAL ARTISTS – who benefitted from the Art Walk, Jean reasoned The Housed were open to Bohemian Artists, and, if she could disguise her Commy Colony as a group of eccentric starving artists – normal people would open up their doors, hearts, and purse to them! This is

FRAUD!

I realized instantly the Nine Muses had given me a Victor Hugo novel – and a Dicken’s Tale? No way was I going to give it up – or Belle! Never! I see Jean and Mother Wiccan! She came from Florida. She and Valkyrie were not in touch with the Local Traditional Narrative – like I am. I was – A THREAT! Jeans talks about the “haters”. Hating me – a real artist – became an art form. Kafka is here, too. The homeless vagrants were granted – EXTRA RIGHTS! Give them an inch – they’ll take a mile!

Jean went to law school. She is proud to say Alley Valkyrie is – LAWYERED UP! Alley threatens my free speech with her attorneys. She had more than one. Real artists are the least represented group when it comes to Legal Rights. To hang a sign on the statue of Ken Kesey, is defacing a work of art. Jean had to choke when she read on Facebook her Wiccan In The Field used the word “threat” several times in regards what she sent me in a e-mail. Consider the rich Russian Oligarchs moving in on the Art World.

Belle Burch and Alley Valkyrie were aspiring artist and writers. When I met with Belle I asked her to co-author my auto-biography – that she offered to edit – for a fee. When she sent me an e-mail asking me to write and send in an e-mail – very personal information – I suspected she was trying to get around my Copyright. When I got threats from Alley, I suspected she talked to Belle, and both writers feared I would take charge of – their story – because I knew the Kesey Family and Pranksters.

In her interview with Witch Thorn, Alley talks about the mental illness amongst the homeless, how she just had to….walk away! Consider ‘One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest’.

John Presco

“The weekly gathering that became the Kesey Square Revival emerged from a collective vision of what a common space in downtown Eugene could (and should) look like. A public plaza should be alive and thriving, with people eating lunch, making music, reading, playing chess, and meeting with friends. And as Ken Kesey himself once said, “You don’t lead by pointing and telling people some place to go. You lead by going to that place and making a case.” We decided to manifest this vision.

We spent the year continually focused on integrating the downtown population as a whole and creating vibrant public space that focuses on community inclusion, positive energy, economic revitalization, and free expression.

“Please, go ahead and blog my threat.
You have no fucking idea what you’re getting yourself into
You also have no idea how many people are already on to you, and how many people have my back. We also have six other mutual friends who are going to learn about your behavior ASAP
And just so you know as well: if you write anything about me that could be construed as defamatory, you will be hearing from my lawyers ASAP.”

“On a beautiful Friday afternoon in early 2012, approximately fifty people spontaneously appeared in Kesey Square, bringing tables, chairs, board games, free food, music, street theater, and chalk art. We spent the afternoon interacting with the community, creating a space that was welcoming to everyone, whether housed, unhoused, or somewhere in between. The response to our presence was overwhelmingly positive, and as a result, we gathered at Kesey almost every Friday during the warm months of 2012.”

Descent of Innana Into The Emerald Valley

Posted on September 23, 2019 by Royal Rosamond Press

When Victoria gave Miriam an Art Tour of Osborne House, she was eternally grateful for each lesson her lover gave her. After every exposure to high culture, she would give Victoria a look of total devotion. Every look may have come with a mini-climax. It was pure adoration. Starfish has a hero! When they stood before the painting of ‘The Roses of Heliogabalus – MIRIUM SHREIKED!

“There’s you! That’s you!”

“Where?”

“HERE! Right here!” and Miriam was jabbing her finger on the reclining beauty over and over – real hard!

“STOP IT!” Victoria shrieked, and grabbed Miriam’s wrist, and received a look that could kill. Victoria did not back down, or let go of Miriam’s wrist. There was a hard stare-down. Victoria was puzzled about how she could best control Miriam’s adolescent behavior that she exhibited in front of Professor John Von John. She insulted the fuck out of him. As Miriam got closer in order to examine the work of art for damage, she heard;

“I’m sorry. I will never do it again!”

Victoria came over and cupped Miriam’s cheek in her hand.

“I hope I didn’t hurt you. I love you Miriam. Now I’m going to work on my sculpture for an hour or two. Let’s have an early dinner, and work on some files in bed. We have gotten behind.”

Miriam insisted they eat on the main dining room. Heading for their room, Miriam spotted roses.

“Oh look! Someone has dropped rose petals. Let’s see where they lead!”

“Sure! You lead the way!” Victoria said, then let go a nervous burp, because her great powers of deduction already dropped a GIANT CLUE! Oh please – YOU – not there. Oh – YOU – why have thou forsaken me?”

Turning a corner, the roses made a beeline for HER bedroom.

“What’s in here?” Opening the door to Queen Victoria’s sacred bedroom – she threw it open!

“Welcome my Queen! Time for you to retire!”

There were candles and roses everywhere. Victoria’s bed was filled with rose pedals. This was the bed she died in, and it remained un-disturbed for a very long time.

Miriam began to spin around in her head. She was in a whirling vortex of rose pedals. A trap door opened beneath her, and she stared down into the bowels of hell. Getting in that bed was the most forbidden thing to do in Britain. Her Wildness had learned mothing from the tapping finger on the oil painting lecture. Now she began to take off her clothes.

Since Donald and Boris took office, Miriam and many millions of people, of class, were not the same. Reality was upended. Queen Elizabeth began to confide in Victoria, because she was so sensible, level-headed. Being a virgin really helped in Vitoria’s new Royal Brand. Then there came her bond with the Wild Woman, the Giant Nut who hopped about in Prince Albert’s oak trees. The jig was up.

Victoria began to unbutton her blouse as she worked on her design for the 27th. letter of the alphabet that defined what lies beyond the A Type personality. It was a halved swastika. The “I must always have my way ” letter was born.

Miriam put two rose wreaths on their heads replicating her favorite painting. She just had to do this, Victoria concluded, as she slipped in between the forbidden sheets. Nothing, or no one, was going to stop her. This is why she was one the greatest assasins on the planet. She was utterly inspired!

Starfish grabbed a handful of rose petals and sprinkled them on their lovely breasts that rested on the hundred year old satin. Picking up their cellphones, they summoned old business.

“O.K. I’ll go first. See this women? She was a good friend of my mother who studied acting under her. I ran into her daughter in Eugene at the Drum Circle.  She was amazed when she saw me doing the Labyrinth Dance that my mother taught me. She started dancing, to show me she was taught this dance by her mother who died when she was nine! I was nine when my mother died. She told me Catherine has an archive at the UofO library. I went there and got it copyied. Here it is.

“Why didn’t you show me this earlier?” Victoria asked with a pang of jealousy.

Duh! I was very busy. My boss was chasing me around her desk trying to get sex!”

“Do you have a photo of the daughter?” Victoria asked, she ignoring the two pokes in the rib from Miriam’s elbow.

“That may not be a good idea. I can feel green-gooey jealous vibes flowing off you. She married this Monroe guy who invented a new religion. It’s a cross between Shakerism and ISSIS. He is very strict. Bell had to be home before dark.”

“Belle. Is that her name?” Victoria asked, with icy breath.

“Yes. Her mother introduced Gamelan Music to the University of Oregon.”

Miriam did have a life before she saw Victoria’s very pale blue eyes. She liked to do things – her way. She couldn’t wait to walk the streets of Eugene like her mother did. Her mother was a Hippie Vamp. She had many lovers. She was famous on 13th. When her daughter came down 13th. to the campus, she really poured it on. She was very exaggerated. Starfish wanted to make sure she left the same impression her mother did. She put in her earplugs and played her favorite song.

As fate would have it, Marilyn’s daughter, Niesha Calkins was very involved in the Gamelan at the UofO. Belle seemed oblivious. But, she hid who she was, and is. Catherine and Jeff conducted Labyrinth Dances in Eugene, to Gamelan. I understand Belle’s mother cast a long shadow.  She was born to a Super Mother when she was forty-five. This is what go my full attention. I never beheld the ‘Hidden One’. Belle………inspires me!

Eugene lost one of its most creative artists last week. Cancer stole Catherine Vandertuin from us when she was far too young. In her too-short time here, Vandertuin, the founder and artistic director of Eugene Chamber Theatre, applied enormous energy, creativity and collaboration to the innovative theater/music productions of Dust and Dreams, Antigone, The Descent of Innana and Ice Cure, the last adapted from an original manuscript. She also collaborated in various puppet and mask theater productions. Her vision was to create multi-disciplinary works that explored themes of balance and wholeness. Catherine brought Javanese gamelan music to Eugene in 1992 with the founding of Gamelan Nuju Laras, well known for accompanying labyrinth walks created by her partner, Jeff Burch. Although her theater work and family obligations eventually forced her to give up the gamelan, Catherine’s contribution continues in Nuju Laras’s successor, Gamelan Sari Pandhawa, and the 90-piece Javanese gamelan Gamelan Kyai Tunjung Mulya, whose construction she commissioned and supervised. Gamelan Kyai Tunjung Mulya was ultimately donated to the UO where it is used to teach UO students and other community members. Through her teaching at LCC, collaborations with other community artists, and irrepressibly creative spirit, Catherine made Eugene a much more artistically vital place, and her legacy will live on in the audiences she touched and the artists she taught and inspired.

When Miriam beheld the people climbing the stairs to the Jordon Schnitzer Museum, she let go of Victoria’s hand, skipped across the grass, and bounded up the steps – four at a time! Her entrance was like Nureyev flying across the stage. She was an escapee from Botticelli’s Primavera. People gasped! They thought she was part of a show. She was the star ballerina and the Constantine Christian Nudist Camp where she was homeschooled. This was her first encounter with an institution of higher learning.

Espying a group of people before a painting down the hall, she was upon them in seven giant steps. Her long arms reached in, and pushed them aside. There was some complaints. But, when they turned to see a goddess with roses in her hair, and with eyes the color of the sea, they parted as she zeroed in.

Everyone’s mouths were now open, like hers was open. They were seeing this painting for the first time through Myriam’s eyes. She came closer. Her long neck was craned, as she made a figure eight with her head. Now she turned sideways, and starting in the lower left corner she moved her eye across the image, slowly, till she reached the up left corner. Bending down again, she moved even closer, and ran her right eye along the work. People were astonished with her. It was a magnificent ballet. Her long arms moved her hands just above the surface as if she was taking the painting in through some kind of osmosis.

“Oh my God! There is a Möbius circle in here – and PI! How did he do this? First he is the self, then he is the audience. He goes into a total intuitive state, does a loop over, then dips down into the subconscious. Now he is walking on the dark side of the moon. There is no hope for his return. His work is surrendered to a higher power who ingnites a spark of divine inspiration! Alas, he bursts forth in The finishing!………It is Finns!

Myriam turns to face her audience. Her blue-green eyes fill with a look of astonishment.

“He is……Co-Creator!”

Around twelve people – burst out in applause!

“How wonderful!”

“I never realized this before!”

“What beauty!”

“She is – so right!”

Like a panther, she left this work and stalked off looking for another. The people moved in a fill the void. They soaked up the energy Myriam left behind. Their eyes had been opened.

Victoria watched her amazing friend, her head was above the rest, as she gazed around from the top of the mountain she had just climbed.

“Come Starfish. We are late!”

Moving into a large room, they got their first look at Mr. von Bond. There was a long leather seat with six people sitting before their Master. Myraim crept up on the seat, pushed two people aside, then sat smack dab in the middle, up front, not but fifteen feet of the old wizard that reminded Myriam of the Russian Saint Nicholas. John was going to give her something valuable – for free! She dared not move lest she be disqualified, deprived of this blessing.

John, was completely unnerved. He had to blink several times, because it was like looking at a photograph, a still life, a breathing portrait, that did not move an inch! This beautiful creature had roses in her hair. She was so completely, so utterly, receptive. And, she was more than wide awake. There was an awaking going on inside her. John von Bond, felt like a work of art. He was, her masterpiece. She, had found him.

This is the tale of Rosamund’s Labyrinth, a tale of love, jealousy, hatred; a tale whose truth is lost in the mists of time. What we have are myths, legends, songs and stories, passed down by word of mouth, from that medieval time.

Hannahannah (from Hittite hanna- “grandmother”) is a Hurrian Mother Goddess related to or influenced by the pre-Sumerian goddess Inanna, although the similarity in name to the Biblical Hannah, mother of Samuel (according to 1 Kings); the Canaanite Anat, and the Christian Saint Anne are coincidental, the name Hannah in Hebrew having a different etymology deriving from a native root. Hannahannah was also identified with the Hurrian goddess Hebat.
Christopher Siren reports that Hannahannah is associated with the Gulses.

The Sacred Labyrinth Walk, Illuminating the Inner Path, is the ancient practice of “Circling to the Center” by walking the labyrinth. The rediscovery of this self alignment tool to put our lives in perspective is one of the most important spiritual movements of our day. Labyrinths have been in use for over 4000 years. Their basic design is fundamental to nature and many cultures and religious traditions. Whatever one’s religion…walking the labyrinth clears the mind and gives insight. It calms people in the throes of life’s transitions.

Georgiana Lotfy, Licensed Marriage, Family Therapist, Doctor of Ministry, has facilitated labyrinth and meditation presentations for several years. She can be reached at healyourlove.com

We extend an invitation to people from all faiths, especially those who are in transition and/or are struggling to find a means of prayer or meditation.

Join us as you learn about this ancient meditation tool of prayer, as we become “spiritual beings on a human path, not simply human beings on a spiritual path.”

History

Bernadette Gaire performs a sacred dance on 36 foot canvas labyrinth People, formal cultures, and traditions have used the spiral and labyrinth designs as a symbol of their search for meaning and guidance. The labyrinth is a “unicursal” or one path design – there are no tricks or decisions to be made – much as the surrender to walking a sacred spiritual path in life – our only decision is to choose spirit/God and surrender to divine guidance. The labyrinth is non -denominational . People of all faiths and people longing to re-connect to faith come to walk labyrinths. “I found peace and a sense of God’s presence that I had not experienced since childhood,” responds a labyrinth walker.

Some of the earliest forms of labyrinths are found in Greece, dating back to 2500-2000 B.C.E. This labyrinth is called the Cretan labyrinth or classical seven-circuit labyrinth. So much a part of the fabric of this early society was the labyrinth, that it was embossed on coins and pottery. Early Christian labyrinths date back to 4th century, a basilica in Algeria. The Chartres design labyrinth is a replica of the labyrinth laid into the cathedral floor at Chartres, France in the thirteenth century. The Chartres design is a classical eleven-circuit labyrinth (eleven concentric circles) with the twelfth being in the center of the labyrinth.

One walks a labyrinth by stepping into the entrance and putting one foot in front of the other. After traveling through all the paths and windings, the walker comes into the center – the six – petal rosette, after a time there, the walker returns out to cover the same path out as in. Total travel is approximately one third mile, depending on the size of the labyrinth. The Chartress Cathedral Labyrinth is 42′ in diameter. My portable labyrinth is 35′ wide.

Guidelines

Walking the labyrinth on New Year’s Eve at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Long Beach, CaliforniaThere is no “right” or “wrong” way to walk a labyrinth. I ask and aid walkers at my workshops by stating “quiet the mind, open the heart”. Because you are walking, the mind is quieted. Labyrinth walks are sometimes referred to as “body prayer” or walking meditation. I suggest that people may want to see the walk as three parts to a whole experience – but I recognize many go through the walk and these parts at different stages.

The entrance can be a place to stop, reflect, make prayer or intention for the spiritual walk you are about to take. The walk around the design to the center can be a “letting go” – a quieting of the thoughts, worries, lists of tasks to do, a letting go unto the experience of being present in the body. Arrival at the center rosette – a place of prayer/meditation – “letting in” Gods guidance, the divine into our lives. When ready, the walk out “letting out” takes us back into our lives, empowered by spirit to transform our lives and actions.

In many ways, I see the labyrinth as a call to action, a transformation spiritual tool for people. It can aid healing, help in releasing grief, (people often shed tears during the “letting go”), help guide through troubled times, aid in decision making, illuminate our purpose in life, and act as a tool of celebration and thanks. I have seen it be many things for many people. It is important to recognize it as a spiritual practice, not a magical tool. Its work is our commitment to enter into the sacred spiritual walk, not merely once, but to use it as part of an ongoing spiritual practice.

The vision of the world-wide Labyrinth Project is to establish labyrinths in cathedrals, retreat centers, hospitals, prisons, parks, airports, and community centers so they are available to walk in times of joy, in times of sorrow and when we are seeking hope.

The Descent of Inanna

In Gratitude

For the audience who makes a story. For those who came to the performance of the play made from these poems more than one—who told me they would do so until they had their favorite words memorized. For Catherine who never feared to go anywhere into feeling, who asked for the voice of Ereshkigal. And then had the spirit and force to gather us all into this amazing theater production. For Jeff who introduced me to Catherine “just to see what would happen”. For all the amazing actors and actresses whose gestures became my words.

There is no greater gift for a poet than to see her words embodied by such a brilliant group of men and women as Eugene Chamber Theater.

Our whole community suffered the untimely death of Catherine Vandertuin, its founder and director. Catherine, we miss you. But you are still present to us in the work you elicited from us—you are still present in these words.

The Story Behind the Play

The inspiration for these pieces came from working with the actors and director of Eugene Chamber Theater. They improvised the story of the Descent of Inanna, and then provided encouragement, insight, and feedback for the words that I wrote after being inspired by their work. I owe an immense debt to Catherine Vandertuin, Eugene Chamber Theater’s late producer and director (see “Slant” article that follows). She was the archetypal woman gatherer in her role in both this theater piece and this group as she undertook the daunting task of producing a theater piece out of the poetry that came to me in our collaboration. I have been deeply touched by the spirit, talent, perception, and dedication of DJ Adams as Old Woman, as , Nancy Hopps as Inanna (who has taken new directions with her talent) , Richard Leebrick as Dumuzi, Katina Poxino as Ereshkigal , Barratt Walton (also a talented director and playwright) as Ninsubah, Corey Woods as an early Dumuzi, and Tim Guetterman and Jason Hines as Inanna’s sons. I know of no greater gift than to work with such brilliant performers and whole-spirited human beings. I would not have written these words but for their generosity, courage, imagination, and intelligence.

Extraordinary thanks are also owing Jeff Defty, who not only wrote an exquisite musical score for the Eugene Chamber Theater production to accompany my words– but who originally introduced me to Catherine Vandertuin with the prospect of our collaboration.

You, the reader, are one more element to community in these poems: in the old traditions, the listening of the audience makes a story. In Eugene Chamber Theater’s 22 productions of the Descent of Inanna, audience presence, sharing, and feedback provided further inspiration for all of our work. It is because of so many audience requests for these words that I am publishing them here—as small recompense for the great gift that this whole process has been to me.
I have included here the pieces that audience members requested most often. The following poems were used in the Eugene Chamber theater’s first year production of Descent of Inanna: “Old Woman Dreams of the Wind”(I and II), “Inanna Burns Dumuzi Through Four Lifetimes”,
2
“The Call of Ereshkigal”, “Inanna’s Farewell”, “The Old Woman at the Gate”, “The Descent of
Inanna”, “Woman on the Cross”, and “Chorus”. “The Voices of the Angels of Darkness” was
added in the second season of production. I owe Richard Leebrick special thanks for helping me
to arrange the drafts of “Dumuzi Speaks to the Silence Inanna Leaves Behind” into the piece
here—which he also powerfully acted in the second season of production.
The story of the collaboration process of Eugene Chamber Theater’s production of the
Descent of Inanna is detailed in Tim Guetterman’s video documentary, The Descent of Inanna:
the Tale and the Telling, which he produced and directed with help from Katina Poxino. This
documentary project aired on the Oregon affiliate of PBS and won the “Best of Oregon” award at
the Da Vinci Film Festival.
The Myth
In the beginning, two sisters embody the Tree of Life. The elder sister, Ereshkigal, is dark
and sensual as the fertile earth; she is the womb and root of life. The younger sister, Inanna, is vivid
with the brilliance of fertility, imagination, and creativity; she represents the branches on the tree of
life. Together the sisters represent the whole heart of the world, in which male and female, human
society and nature, light and dark, life and death, are interwoven. But this wholeness is not to last.
The citizens of the city of Uruk take Inanna for their queen and outcast Ereshkigal to a hideous
Underworld. As its queen, Inanna brings mathematics, agriculture and irrigation, mathematics, law,
and astronomy to Uruk. When she chooses the shepherd Dumuzi to be her consort, he is made king,
and Inanna bears and raises two sons with him.
Meanwhile, castaway Ereshkigal suffers terrible loneliness in the Underworld—made
bearable only by her mate, the magnificent Bull of Heaven, who expresses the unbridled power of
nature. But in their drive to empire—and to extend their domain over nature, the people of Uruk
imprison and slaughter the Bull of Heaven. At this, Ereshkigal calls out to Inanna, recounting all
they have lost in their separation. Inanna hears her sister’s eerie, compelling voice and withdraws
from public life, determined to make the journey to the Underworld to rejoin her. Before she goes,
she leaves an inheritance to her sons, and asks her lifelong friend, Ninshubah, to send help for her if
she does not return.
Inanna goes through the seven gates to the Underworld, divesting herself of something at
each gate, until she gives up her life itself in order to enter the inner chambers of Ereshkigal. There
the outcast Ereshkigal is consumed with rage and grief from her years of rejection at the sight of
Inanna. She strips Inanna to the bone, keeping her impaled and lifeless before her.
When Inanna does not return, Ninshubah solicits help for her: small beings created from the
soil under the fingernails of Enki (God of compassion). These creatures slip under the gates of the
Underworld to go to Ereshkigal’s side. There they perform the redeeming service of compassion,
empathizing with Ereshkigal in her pain. Touched, Ereshkigal offers them their boon of restoring
Inanna to life. She releases Inanna to be re-born, but by the laws of the Underworld, another must
return to take Inanna’s place. Ereshkigal’s creatures, the Gala (the messengers of Ereshkigal in the
first poem here), attach themselves to Inanna to ensure fulfillment of this bond.
When Inanna returns to her life, she comes to her sons and to Ninshubah, who are
mourning for her, and instructs the Gala to leave these righteous persons alone. But when Inanna
finds Dumuzi, he is in the midst of an orgiastic celebration. The Gala take him, and Dumuzi
loses all his kingly trappings as he falls to earth to grovel in his own Underworld.
There are a number of versions of the tale—and one broken Sumerian tablet that leads to
speculation—about what happens next. In some versions Dumuzi dies: in some he is freed from the
Underworld during half of the year because his own sister offers to take his place. Here Dumuzi
3
represents the dying of the green world during winter that is reborn each spring. In our version, he makes an alliance with ancient feminine spiritual power represented by the serpent he calls to for help just before the break in the ancient Summerian tablet passed down to us. He interweaves this serpent with his own authority (reflecting the Sumerian symbol of the caudus still used in medicine today)– and his full humanity, like Inanna’s own, is restored.
To this traditional narrative, I have added an Old Woman-storyteller. I envision her to be something like the priestesses who kept the rituals and myths of Inanna for generations. Like so many grandmothers, storytellers, and women healers I have been privileged to know, Old Woman embodies “all the courage love takes when it opens our eyes.”

the winds of Sumer.
Woman on the Cross
(The Voice of Ereshkigal)
I: Anger
Can this be Inanna?
The one who rules by the light
As if the night
Is nothing at all?
Now the Queen of Light knows
What it is to be called
By the goddess Ereshkigal,
Before whom life and death
Hold hands.
Only Inanna came to Ereshkigal
Wearing the power of unholy things!
I have fixed this for Inanna!
Ereshkigal has cleaned Inanna
Of her passing daylight.
Oh, Sumer!
Behold your queen now!
You who threw Ereshkigal away,
Do you hear her speaking to you
19
From that eternal city
That lives under your own?
City of thieves!
I have stolen something of my own.
The Queen of Night
Has the Queen of Light
In her bond.
And the ways
Of my underworld are perfect:
They may not be questioned.
II: Grief
Oh, oh, my insides!
They have ripped me open!
My Bull of Heaven,
He who announced me
To the sky
On the thunder
And the lightning
Lies before me in a shroud–
And I, the Queen of Death
Can do nothing.
For the ways
Of the underworld
Are perfect-
They can be
Neither questioned
Nor changed.
Inanna!
The ways of the underworld
Are perfect,
And therefore
I cry for us both.
Oh, oh, my back!
Oh, you who once loved me.
I am a foreigner to myself,
A word spoken
By no one.
20
When I saw you glowing,
Inanna, do you know
How that hurt?
I, too, am a woman.
I, too, sometimes
Miss the sun!
Oh, Oh, my heart!
Oh, my Bull of Heaven!
Where have you gone
And left this poor corpse
In your place?
I have become
A journey
Without a traveler.
Oh, my belly!
What is there to feed
A woman such as I am?
I am a wall
Of hunger
No one can walk through,
A prisoner
Of my own vision.
I am struck numb
With my secret language.
Why must I suffer so?
Is there no one
To cry with me
To hold my hand
And wipe my brow?
Oh, heaven and earth
Who step on me,
You have named
Every one of my children
For someone else.
I am so weary
Of being your fear!
I am so weary
Of being that
From which nothing
Can escape.
21
Hear me, Oh, Sumer!
I am she who takes back
What belongs to the earth.
Oh, Sumer
Why have you scorned me so,
When I only steal
What must be stolen
To return it to life?
I have only
Taken everything
Back
To my own
Womb.
Ereshkigal’s Gift to the Singer
Who are you with eyes so brave
As to cry with me?
Who give my words life
By your listening?
Speak now for yourself, you
Who have crossed the bridge
Between life and death
To stand in the underworld with me:
Name some gift you wish
To take back home with you.
For the ways of the underworld
Are perfect in what they grant
To the courage of love.
Inanna Burns Dumuzi through Four Lifetimes:
The Third Time
Inanna arrives home from hell.
Dumuzi does not look at her.
She wears ghosts at her side,
Her husband will not
Look at her.
He makes her stand
Outside the gate
While other women
Satisfy him.
22
But the eye
Inanna fixes on him now
Is the eye
Of a woman who has been
To hell and back.
Dumuzi does not hear the sizzle
That comes toward him.
He does not see
The flame rise
Until it is too late
To flee.
Inanna has fixed
Her eyes on Dumuzi,
She looks on his palace
And it is reduced
To coals in the desert.
She looks on his treasury
And his coffers of grain
And his barrels of wine
And his gates and guards
And one by one,
They each go up
In flame.
Inanna reaches out
For Dumuzi once more.
She ignites the lightning
Over his head:
The angels of darkness
Dance and whisper in her flame
And Dumuzi falls to earth,
Himself whispering like a ghost.
Words fall out of him
Like the teeth
Of an old man,
And he begins to sing.
Just before his breath
Becomes smoke
Dumuzi the shepherd
Who once slept
With the animals,
Begins to sing.
23
Dumuzi sings,
And the snake comes to him.
Dumuzi sings
And the snake comes alive in him,
Dumuzi sings
And the snake’s body
Becomes his own.
Dumuzi sings
And he forgets his hands and legs,
Slithering in the dance
That outdances the flame of time,
In its turning,
Dumuzi sings,
Slipping out of skin after skin,
Until the fire itself
Calls him brother.
Dumuzi sings,
Celebrating the snakeskin
Of the rainbox
That is the marriage
Of heaven and earth,
Man and woman.
Dumuzi speaks to god
In the body of a snake.
And when Dumuzi
Rises from the flames,
He has the symbol of the snake
Inscribed in his heart.
And the lightning
In Inanna’s eyes
Is woven round his scepter—
That scepter that is now
The rule of healing.
Inanna Burns Dumuzi through Four Lifetimes:
(The Fourth Time: Homecoming)
Inanna and Dumuzi sit before the fire,
Talking together like the wind,
The cinders of time in their hair.
Dumuzi burns, flashing his spirit
As he once did his body.
24
Inanna burns, weaving her fire
Into the generations
In order to pass herself on.
Together Inanna and Dumuzi
Are the thunder and the lightning,
And wherever they strike,
Heaven and earth
Come together again.
Old Woman Dreams of the Wind II
Last night I dreamt of the wind:
I dream many dreams:
You yourselves
Are only one of them.
But we will never lose each other,
For the wind repeats everything.
And now that my years
Have become a bundle of magic,
I dream the black wind
Of possibility, that pitcher
Where dawn hide itself
Until it elopes into the morning.
I dream the black dark-handed wind,
Feeling for that point
In falling from the sky,
Where we begin to own the distance,
Soaring aloft like eagles,
Witnessing everything.
Last night I dreamt of the wind:
She has the voice of a woman
With a story to tell:
She is crossing a bridge,
And there are so many colors,
Swimming like fish below that bridge,
It takes more than one lifetime
To see them all.
The wind is an old woman,
And time does not apply to her.
Yesterday still blows on today’s wind.
The wind herself has only one breath
Which we all share.
25
The wind herself
Is an old woman,
And when I am gone
Across her bridge,
Ask the wind
What became of Inanna and Ereshkigal,
Of shepherd and king, mother and lover,
And the singer who sings of them all.
The wind repeats everything,
Remembering it all–
Remembering you, too,
And the voice of your own
Question.
I am not afraid of dying.
I have crossed the bridge of dreaming
So many times–what is one more time?
I look forward to seeing
Some old friends again.
Besides, the ways of the underworld
Are perfect, as any storyteller knows.
But as for you,
Who have made me grandmother
By your listening–
I will miss you.
So listen for me
When the wind blows.
Listen for me–
And sing for yourselves.
Chorus
I am that which is not forgotten.
I am your first breath,
Made of water,
Become the great shaking sea again
Before your dreaming eyes.
I am the dark soil,
Midwife to glory and to ruin:
26
The inevitable cracking open
Of all things.
I am the star-driven
Water of life,
Crying its way home.
I am the dance
Of the visible
And the invisible:
I am the dreamer
And the dream.
I am the one who crawls
Low on the earth
And steps high
On the throne of heaven,
Never forgetting my eyes.
I am your shadow:
Panting behind you
With your greatest fear,
Laying out your longest image
Toward the sun.
I am your own feelings
Come to life before and after you
As far as the eye can see.
I am what tears have made.
I am what tears
Are made out of.
I am vision
Large enough to embrace
What I have made.
I am the ancient city
Of the body.
I am the one
Who does not turn away.
I am the one
Brought home again.
