Negotiators from Israel and Hamas are making a final push to seal a Gaza ceasefire in Doha, with all sides suggesting an agreement is almost done.
There were reports of a breakthrough on Wednesday, with unnamed Israeli officials cited as saying that Hamas had agreed to the latest draft presented by Qatari, US and Egyptian mediators.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office however swiftly denied the reports. There was also no immediate comment from the Palestinian armed group.
On Tuesday night, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said they were “on the brink” of an agreement and awaiting “final word from Hamas”.
Israeli historian says Zionism entering its ‘last phase’
Israeli historian Ilan Pappe has told Al Jazeera that he believes there are many factors, from a Trump presidency to international isolation, that show Zionism is entering its “last phase” before its collapse.

I asked Mark Gall to help me with this family history, and, even help me author a book. He was not interested. I’m going to write Harvard and Stanford to see if they want to hold a contest where eight students study the history of the Jewish Turnverein, that helped found the Nation of Israel.
We just had the Olympic Trials in Eugene Oregon, and it was divested of historic information. Phil Knight is a billionaire who makes RUNNING SHOES and contributes million to the University of Oregon that is becoming the epicenter of a Vast Ignorant Zone. VIG.

As I type, several American Battle Groups are sailing to the ZIONIST WAR ZONE to fight for the God of the Jews, who I find to be…..AN EXCEEDINGLY IMATURE AND VENGEFUL GOD! After passing the un-fished Mormon Temple – I INVENTED A NEW GOD AND RELGION! For two months I tried to become a Mormon, but, it was not clear if they worshipped Jesus and the God of the Jews! What is TRUE, the Mormons would admit the Two Dudes on The Bus, while becoming a Jew, and allowed to worship THEIR GOD – is almost impossible! To read the Bible for the first team and understand Jesus was trying to – QUALIFY to be a Jew – was the most confounding information of my life. I was extremely puzzled – after being a Follower of Meher Baba who was a….

The first all Jewish gymnastic club was formed in 1895 known as the
Israelitische Turnverein Konstantinopel (Israelite Gymnastic
Association Constantinople), it was formed by German and Austrian
Jews residing in Constantinople (Istanbul – Kushta) who were
unwelcome at the German gymnastic societies with their “Aryan –
only” membership proclivities.
Modeling themselves on the very German organization which had barred
them, they adopted the slogan of the vigorous, devout, cheerful and
free.
Sport became a way for the “assimilated” Jewish community to end its marginalization and publicly demonstrate its social status and aspirations. The fact that in the 1920s the list of highest-ranking German tennis players was headed by Jewish women indicates not only the sporting opportunities available to such women and their dedication to success, but also the recognition given them in the Weimar Republic.
For many Jews joining a purely Jewish gymnastics or sports club would not have been in keeping with their identity as Germans. Possible reasons for the attraction of non-Jewish sports clubs include the desire to be fully integrated into German culture on the one hand as well as the good training facilities of these clubs on the other. The top level athletes—Lilli Henoch, Gretel Bergmann and Helene Mayer—for example, were accepted and recognized members of non-Jewish athletic clubs before Hitler seized power.
Secular-Socialist Foundation of Zion

It was radical socialist Jews, who belonged to sports clubs, that founded the state of Israel, and not Rabbis or a Messiah. The only person giving the title ‘Messiah’ was Harry Truman, a Democrat. The group that gets most of the credit is the Israelitische Turnverein, a group of Jewish gymnasts who were expelled from the Berlin Turnverien. My Stuttmeiser, Janke kinfolk were members of the Tunrverein, and were radical Forty-Eighters who are also give credit for the founding of Israel. These Forty-Eighters made up John Fremont’s and Jessie Benton’s bodyguard. The Freemasons are here. Other clubs that followed were named after “Bar Kochba” who was seen as a Messiah until he failed to drive the Romans out of Judea. His name was changed to “Simon bar Kozeba” (Hebrew: בר כוזיבא, “Son of lies” or “Son of deception”).
Whne you add it all up, for some strange reason my kindred are right there at the center of the Zionist controversy that has overcome the Republican Party, all but destroying it. The Zionist Evangelicals – disguised as Patriots – have brought our Democracy to a halt. In order to keep the focus on them, budgets are not going to be passed. Millions will be hurt financially. These religious fanatics use our Federal Taxes like a secular tithe in order to spread their propaganda that backs the Hawks of Israel. The only thing that keeps them hidden in the wings, is they have failed to capture the White House. When they do, the Capitol building that houses the Senate and Congress, will be turned into the Evangelical Vatican. They do these things because they know their cosmology is not tenable, is based on delusions and lies. They are Decietful Parasites looking for a legitimate host. This is why I registered as a Republican two years ago.
Get out of the Republican Party founded by my kindred. Form you own party.

As early as the 19th century, Jewish sports clubs were founded in Eastern and Central Europe. The first club was the Israelite Gymnastic Association Constantinople (German: Israelitischer Turnverein Konstantinopel) founded in 1895 in Constantinople, Turkey by Jews of German and Austrian extraction who had been rejected from participating in other social sport clubs. Two years later, haGibor was formed in Philipople, Bulgaria and 1898 saw the founding of Bar Kochba Berlin along with Vivó és Athletikai Club in Budapest, Hungary.
Other clubs that followed were named after “Bar Kochba” or Hebrew names such as “Hakoah” or “Hagibor” that symbolized strength and heroism. One of the basic premises behind the founding of these clubs was Jewish Nationalism. The concept was that Jews were not only a religious entity, but also one based on a common historical and social background, having special cultural and psychological concepts that have been preserved to this day, resulting in a strong recognition of collective belonging.
In 1906, the first Jewish gymnastics club was formed in Palestine. Clubs later would spring up in other cities. By 1912, all of them joined the Maccabi Federation of Israel. That same year, the first relations were established between them and their European counterparts, when a decision was taken at the Maccabi Conference in Berlin to begin group trips to Palestine.
Simon bar Kokhba (Aramaic: שמעון בר כוכבא, also transliterated as Bar Kochba) was the Jewish leader of what is known as the Bar Kokhba revolt against the Roman Empire in 132 CE, establishing an independent Jewish state of Israel which he ruled for three years as Nasi (“Ruler”). His state was conquered by the Romans in 135 following a two-year war.
Documents discovered in the modern era[1] give us his original name, Simon ben Kosiba, (Hebrew: שמעון בן כוסבא) he was given the surname Bar Kokhba, (Aramaic for “Son of a Star”, referring to the Star Prophecy of Numbers 24:17, “A star has shot off Jacob”) by his contemporary, the Jewish sage Rabbi Akiva.
After the failure of the revolt, the rabbinical writers referred to bar Kokhba as “Simon bar Kozeba” (Hebrew: בר כוזיבא, “Son of lies” or “Son of deception”).
Despite the devastation wrought by the Romans during the First Jewish-Roman War (66–73 CE), which left the population and countryside in ruins, a series of laws passed by Roman Emperors provided the incentive for the second rebellion. The last straw was a series of laws enacted by the Roman Emperor Hadrian, including an attempt to prevent Jews from living in Jerusalem; a new Roman city, Aelia Capitolina, was to be built in its place. The second Jewish rebellion took place 60 years after the first and re-established an independent state lasting three years. For many Jews of the time, this turn of events was heralded as the long hoped for Messianic Age. The excitement was short-lived, however; after a brief span of glory, the revolt was eventually crushed by the Roman legions.
A complete Roman legion with auxiliaries was annihilated. The new state knew only one year of peace. The Romans committed no fewer than twelve legions, amounting to one third to one half of the entire Roman army, to reconquer this now independent state. Being outnumbered and taking heavy casualties, the Romans refused to engage in an open battle and instead adopted a scorched earth policy which reduced and demoralized the Judean populace, slowly grinding away at the will of the Judeans to sustain the war.
Modeling themselves on the very German organization which had barred
them, they adopted the slogan of the vigorous, devout, cheerful and
free.
Another milestone in the formation of the Jewish sport movement
occurred at a meeting of the permanent committee of the Second
Zionist Congress held in Basel in 1898. Dr. Max Nordau made an
impassioned plea for a Muscular Judaism noting that “We Jews possess
an exceptional gift for physical activity. It may by that this will
appear paradoxical since we have been accustomed for generations to
view ourselves in the mirror which our enemies have held up to so,
and to discover any number of physical blemishes. It is true that
our muscles have been weakened and that our attitudes and postures
are not always satisfactory… but when Jews do engage in sport their
defects vanish, their postures improve, their muscles become strong
and their general health gets better”. Similarly, Herzl stressed
that the derisive term coined by the anti-Semites, Judenjungen (akin
to “Jewboy”), should be reversed in both form and content, and give
way to the meritorious appellation Junge Juden (Young Jew).
Following Herzl’s and Nordau’s call, many clubs were quickly
organized. This nascent movement received an immeasurable boost with
the appearance in 1900 of the first periodical dedicated entirely to
Jewish sport, Die Juedische Turanzeitung, which was the official
publication of the pre-eminent Jewish gymnastic club, Juedische
Turnverein Bar Kochba – Berlin.
Bolstered by the newspaper’s daring proclamation, the by now
numerous Jewish gymnastic clubs banded together in 1903 under the
umbrella organization of Die Juedische Turnerschaft (Jewish
Gymnastic Association) with headquarters in Berlin. The constitution
of Die Juedische Turnerschaft permitted membership to every Jewish
gymnastic club that accepted that “the aim of the society is to
foster gymnastics as a medium to build up physical fitness as part
of the Jewish National Idea.”
On the fourth of May [1856] the regular annual festival of the Turnverein Association of San Francisco took place, with all the usual accompaniments of music, dancing, gymnastics, oratory, eating and drinking. The festival, which was inaugurated by a procession of the Society to welcome their brother Turners from the interior, lasted three days, and everybody passed off in the most orderly and agreeable manner. The gymnastic performances were excellent, and formed a large portion of the ceremonies.
The celebration of the “May festival,” although in the United States it is conducted under the control of the Turnverein Association, is a national festival in which all the Germans partake, and which is celebrated throughout all Germany. The origin of the Turner Association, which has now become so large and so important a one among our German citizens, was a political one. Germany is divided into thirty-six different States, with as many Governments of a despotic nature, and many of them hostile to each other.
Young Germany, deeply imbued with the spirit of freedom, has been for a long time anxious to throw off these yokes, and unite under one liberal, consolidated Government; but the rulers, in order to prevent this, have forbidden all assemblies or associations for political purposes, under heavy penalties. In order to avoid this prohibition an enthusiastic republican named Jahn made the meeting and associations for gymnastic exercises the occasion for the spread of democratic doctrines, and the Turnverein (or gymnastic association,) soon spread and grew into importance wherever Germans are found. This association now exists in, and exercises a great influence over the whole German population.
There is no secrecy about the association, neither is there any direct connection between the different associations, although a Turner of any one city considers himself, to all intents and purposes, a member of the Turnverein of any other city.
Sports in Germany: 1898-1938
In Brief
Sports were a way for the assimilated Jewish German community to publicly demonstrate its status. Women’s participation in Jewish gymnastics increased significantly during the first two decades of the twentieth century. Even before WWI, woman members of Jewish clubs had the same rights as their male counterparts, and female coaches were trusted to train woman gymnasts. Jewish women also founded their own clubs. The Jewish community grew its sports movement during the 1920s – women now participated in cross-country running, swimming, and tennis. After German sports clubs banned Jewish membership in 1933, women poured into Jewish sports groups, and membership continued to grow with the rise of National Socialism. Hitler only permitted “half-Jews” to represent Germany in the Olympics. After Kristallnacht in 1938, all remaining Jewish sporting activities were terminated.Contents
My Dead Have Been Taken Hostage

To: The City of Belmont
October10, 2023
My name is John Presco. I am President of Royal Rosamond Press ‘A newspaper for the Arts. Several months ago I tried to speak at the council meeting held to discuss Stanford buying Notre Dame de Namur, but my voice could not be heard after I was called upon due to technical difficulty.. I tried to speak at the last meeting, but it was canceled. For two weeks I have been working on a vision for the future of Twin Pines Park – knowing when Stanford moves in – they are going to want more land. I have more land to give them, on the condition I am on the team who designs a Inner City Park and Bohemian Mercantile Mecca – that will be a showcase to other city all over the world!.
I am the great grandson of Carl Janke the co-founder of Belmont. whose remains were dug up in the middle of the night and put in a mass grave in the Union Cemetery. I am asking the Mayor and City Council to help me get more information on how this could have happened. On August 27th. I became a Odd Fellow so I can honor my ancestors, who were dug up from their final resting place in the Oddfellow Cemetery in San Francisco. After the initiation ceremony, a brother told me there was a fight over the Oddfellow Cemetery next to the University of Oregon, that bid lawmakers to pass Bills so they could dig up more dead people and move them elsewhere. Those Bills – failed!
I was going to postpone my request due to the horrific news being name in Israel and the Gaza Strip, but I began to hear plea after plea for the return of bodies, some of them mutilated, so they can be buried, so the families of the dead can find closure. I have no closure, and I feel my dead have been taken hostage.
When I contacted the Belmont Historical Society, I was hoping to begin a genealogical-historical research that would lead me own more information about the Turnverein Jews who formed a bond with the Turnverein Gentiles in the City of Berlin, where my Stuttmeister ancestors have a magnificent monument in a cemetery. They were Evangelicals who sailed to all parts of the world. They may have known German Templers who founded colonies in Israel. My great grandfather married Augusta Janke at Ralston Hall and took a stage to Santa Cruz for their honeymoon. The Janke family owned that stage?
“Dr. and Mrs. Stuttmeister left Thursday morning for Santa Cruz and Monterey, where they will spend the honeymoon. On their return they will make their home in Belmont.”
.Four Generations of the Carl Janke Family were dug up from their final resting place – and put somewhere else. This is a Forty-niner Family. Dorothy Janke’s mother was born on the island of Heligoland, that means Holy Land. Heinrich Mutter may be her father. There should be a brass plaque on this island telling Dorothy’s People she was part of the Gold Rush, and was a California Pioneer. Did the Heligolandians pool their money together to go West and secure more land for future generations? People all over the world heard the gold was just lying there – in the streets! If the Belmont City Planners and Government – had not respected the dead for all those years – then there would not have been free land to grab and make a city park! Shall we title this….The Second Gold Rush….considering the price of real estate? Let us pray all the caring offspring of Carl and Dorothea – are dead – and don’t show up out of the blue to reclaim what is rightfully theirs to enjoy.
Help me complete the Janke Family Dream. Bring Carl and Dorette Catherine Janke – back home, so they can be honored in the way the Belmont City of Ol – agreed to honor them. If everything meets to my specifications, then I will give written permission for Belmont and Stanford to exand their vision onto Sacred Ground, in the most honorable, and respectful way possible.

I just found a letters I wrote to Mr. White, the President of Namur College. Scroll down.

Dear Mr. White; My name is John Presco and I am the great, great grandson of Carl Janke, who brought six portable houses around the Cape in 1849. It appears that one of these portable houses is inside Ralston Hall – that was built around the small houses that Count Cipriani allegedly had shipped from Italy. I doubt this is true. I would conduct a study by archeological historians who can test the wood – that may not be cut from foreign trees? How about the screws that put this house together?
Three days before Memorial Day I discovered Carl Janke, his wife, and his mother-in-law were dug up from their graves in the middle of the night, and put in the same hole in Redwood City. This was done in 1972. I wonder if this religious activity is recorded in the archives of ND? The sacred ground reserved for the Jankes was located in Twin Pines Park that is next to ND – that might have purchased some of the original land owned by Carl. Can you check? You have a team of scholars and researchers at your disposal. Do you teach local history, or, is your main field – psychology? If so, then an analysis of City Planner’s is called for, being, Stanford purchased ND and is going to make big changes. Can we rest assured new planners – won’t do something crazy? There are rules and laws for exhuming the dead – and reburying them. Would you like to be thrown in a grave with your mother-in-law?
(What would Freud say about this – recurring nightmare?)
Let me begin my proposal this way….I want your assistance in returning my great grandparents to their original burying grounds, and installing me as a professor and theologian in residence. My kindred, Dominica Wieneke founded Briarcliff College. Other family members became a priest and nuns in the Oder of Saint Francis. My alleged ancestor, Godeschalk Rosemondt, was the Master of Louvain and the Falcon Art College in Holland. He was Pope Adrien executor, and found the Pope’s College for poor boys. My kin commissioned the artist Hieronymus Bosch, whose art should be taught at NM, as well as Artificial Intelligence in the World of Art, a course I will design. I would like to found a school of spies and augurs, in Ralston Hall where my great grandfather, William Stuttmeister, got married to Augustus Janke, the daughters of Carl, I am kin to John Fremont, the first to emancipate slaves. I became a Nazarite in 1987, and am steeped in Biblical knowledge. I alone figured out what Jesus wrote in the dust. I can teach a course in religion – that will change Christianity as we know it.
I am seventy six years of age, and do not feel safe where I am. I believe you should follow religious traditions, and have me be The Monk in Residence until it is time for me to go to a just reward. My blog, Royal Rosamond Press may be the largest blog in the world, and should be archived. Today is Father’s Day. Any books that come out of this Journey to The Past will be donated to an Art Program for poor children. I taught my late sister how to paint and she became the famous artist ‘Rosamond’. She is a great granddaughter of Carl Janke, and married into the Benton family.. We are kin to John Fremont who emancipated slaves. Carl built two Turnverien Halls and may be a Fourty-Eighter. Our history has much to do with the celebration of Juneteenth. This was not the first time members of the Janke family were dug out of their graves. Four of them were removed from the Oddfellows graveyard in SF. Member of the LDS church offered to help me research the Janke family. I went to their event.. I believe my Civil Liberties are being violated considering the classes you offer to minorities, where discovering their past – is vital! Freedom of religion involves – our dead! Jesus, and other Jews, raised people from the dead. I declared my self Nazarite in 1987.
Last night I researched getting a Getty Grant. There is a residency program attached to the Getty Villa. My late brother-in-law did the murals here. He and Christina Rosamond Benton were friends of Ann and Gordon Getty and did a mural in their home. Consider all the great murals in churches. I believe I am the exception. I was forced to drop out of high school. A watercolor I did toured the world in a Red Cross show. I believe I am a National Treasure and will say so in my message to Gavin Newsom who has been close the the Getty family his whole life.
I ran for Governor of Oregon last year and and am a Republican Candidate for President. For years I have ordered the Evangelical Politicians who subscribe to the false teaching of John Darby and Tim LaHaye – to get out of my families party! I figured out why Jesus said;
“I’ve come for the sinner – and not the righteous!”
The author Damon Knight did a study of Bosch and found to figures in The Wedding Feast at Cana – that were removed – and replaced with a dancing dog. I believe those men are Pope Adrien and Godeschalk Rosemondt. The other figures are members of the Swan Brethren. Everyone and everything is pointing to the foundation of the Brotherhood of the Swan at Notre Dame de Namur.

It is 4:38 A.M. in Springfield Oregon. I just woke from the most arduous dream of my life where I was REBORN, into the flesh, into the spirit, into the plan God made for me. On this day I found The Falcon Art College At Belmont. I will write a letter to Pope Saint Francis and asking him for his blessing and support in the fulfilment of a Prophecy.
Today is October 7, 2020. I believe it is God’s will that the Falcon Art College of Belmont be located inside Ralston Hall, that I believe is one of the portable buildings brought around the Cape on a Clipper Ship by my great grandfather, Carl Janke, the founder of a soda works in Belmont, and a German Theme park. The Ralston house was a portable house put together by 5,000 screws. I am now convinced that Gottschalk Rosemondt is my great ancestor, and appeared in a Bosch painting with his best friend, Pope Adrian. I believe it is the Fair Lady of the Swan Brethren who is my guardian angel and angelic guide.

Dear Mr. Mayor;
Someone on the Belmont Historical Society suggested I have violated their copyright, by posting an image of William Janke, who may be in a family photograph this is posted on their facebook page. About twelve of my posts have been removed, which alarms me, because I offer NEW family information – that could be used without my permission! Being related this famous family does not rate with this clic who are described as “we”. To be invited by an origination connected with the City of Belmont, to contribute your family history, then be treated like you are a outsider and parasite – is outrageous! This goes against the tradition of other Historical Societies – who encourage descendant of famous people to contribute – because there is no telling what they have, or, if they are going to put that Society in their will. I demand a full investigation. I would like to see your bi-laws.

Wolf Stuttmeister Comes To Belmont

“Dr. and Mrs. Stuttmeister left Thursday morning for Santa Cruz and Monterey, where they will spend the honeymoon. On their return they will make their home in Belmont.”
When I awoke from my Old Man Nap yesterday, I wept when I saw the words I composed to my friend, Ed Howard, as to why our quest to get funding for the preservation of the History of Black Oakland – was sabotaged – by white citizens of Belmont, who loved my families White History, but hated my White Integrated History, especially my Turnverein Forty-Eighter History. I have been looking at the real possibility Rudolph Stuttmeister was a Berlin Turnverein, and he fled to the New World before the Revolution of 1948? This very wealthy family saw what was coming. Were they conservatives who took the side of the radicals? Germans were killing Germans.

Three Flags – One Grave
Posted on May 27, 2023 by Royal Rosamond Press

It is 8:33 A.M. May 27, 2023 – and I am still in shock having discovered my grandparents are buried in the same grave! I saw TWO flags put on one gravestone. That was a half hour ago. THEN – I see another flag! There are three of my ancestors buried in the same grave! WHY? Did the caretakers conclude this was a very poor family? William Stuttmeister knew they were Belmont before he died. At great expense to himself, he moved the Jankes to Colma after they were evicted from the Odd Fellow cemetery – at great expense! This was a wealthy pioneer family whose graves keep being defiled! They were moved to the Union cemetery i 1972?
I found Carl and Dorothea (also and Doretta) are buried at the Union Cemetary in Redwood City.

Students happily mill past cemetery markers, while buildings rise high above the graves. This surreal scene appears in drawings from 1963 showing a proposed addition to the University of Oregon campus: structures sitting on pilings over the Pioneer Cemetery.
The idyllic sketches make the cemetery on the south edge of campus look almost parklike beneath the edifices, with the long-buried dead a minor afterthought to the aspirations of higher education.
It’s sketches like these, as reported in the Daily Emerald back in the 1960s as well as a couple of student theses on the topic, that allowed Eugene Weekly to piece together the University of Oregon’s buried history with the Pioneer Cemetery — a moment when the UO decided it was a good idea to erect buildings over the dead.
Roxi Thoren, associate professor and department head of Landscape Architecture at the UO, sheds light on the architectural thinking. She says, cemetery aside, the idea of an elevated building was “standard architecture of the time.”
She says the idea comes from French architect and modern architecture pioneer Le Corbusier’s idea of a tower in the park. It’s “supposed to be a continuous horizontal green plane, and the city will be this expansive garden,” she says.
She calls the thinking of the time progressive and technocratic. “It’s about technology freeing us from the vicissitudes of nature,” Thoren says.
But looking back, the plans look strangely out of touch.
Although a bit weird, the university’s aspirations probably don’t shock anyone familiar with the “University of Nike.” Even before being flooded with Phil Knight’s money, the UO was ambitious. The university in 1963 was doing exactly what it’s doing now: casting its gaze on nearby land, seeking to acquire real estate and build not only new academic buildings, but its reputation as well.
In 1963, the architecture firm Lutes and Amundson created five plans for the UO to expand onto the land occupied by the Pioneer Cemetery. The most ambitious — and most unbelievable — was an idea to construct buildings over existing graves, presumably without disturbing them.
Thoren says the tower-in-a-park idea is a nice one, but she calls some of the unbuilt design examples, such as the plan for the cemetery, a bit extreme. “A tower in a park is one thing,” she says. “A tower in a cemetery is another.”
She adds that architects of the period often did not think about the world as it existed around them. They saw their desire to build as something paramount to the needs and limitations of the space it would inhabit.
The non-engagement with pre-existing conditions seems to have been at play with Lutes and Amundson and the UO. The plan depicts a landscaped graveyard with footpaths for students to walk on. Above them are buildings vaulted and supported by beams. Skybridges direct students from other areas of campus to their over-the-cemetery classrooms.
Basically, the UO wanted so badly to expand that it was willing to put buildings on stilts over a graveyard.
“That is shocking,” says Ocean Howell, associate professor of architectural history at the University of Oregon Clark Honors College, looking at the architectural drawings. He’s shocked not only by the premise of the plans themselves, but also by the fact that they were seriously considered in 1963.

Whose Cemetery?
Long before plans were made for grand buildings and skybridges above the cemetery, quieter plans arose to challenge the governing body of the Pioneer Cemetery. A fracture within the Odd Fellows Cemetery Association led to more than a decade of disputes over the land, many of them involving the university. The Odd Fellows Lodge owned the cemetery at the time.
The association split into two groups: the Odd Fellows Cemetery Association and the Pioneer Memorial Park Association. The Odd Fellows believed the new Pioneer Association wanted to hand over rights to the university.
Down the line the Odd Fellows changed the name of their association to the Eugene Pioneer Cemetery Association in hopes of disassociating with the Lodge and getting the rights to the property back.
The two groups went to court and, at one point, the Eugene Pioneer Cemetery Association argued that the Pioneer Memorial Park Association had allowed the cemetery to become so overgrown that it “constituted a fire hazard besides having an unsightly appearance.”
The five plans created by Lutes and Amundson called for the university to convert the cemetery into usable academic space. The strangest of them was the Le Corbusier-esque tower-in-the-cemetery idea.
This idea was backed by state Rep. Ed Elder and was known as Elder’s Compromise.
The plan included utility tunnels and vehicular circulation that “could be located within 30 feet of roadways where excavation without disturbing graves would be possible.” The plans also say “some ground floor service areas and stairways could be located in vacant grave areas.”
Howell told EW that it would, in fact, not be possible to construct to this scale above a cemetery without disturbing graves.
Much of the record over the debate comes fromthe Daily Emerald’s assiduous reporting on the university’s interest in the cemetery for several months.
In 1969, a bill was introduced in the Legislature that would allow for the cemetery to be condemned, then absorbed into the university and built over. It was not the first bill of its kind and, like the others, the bill did not pass.
The other plans for the cemetery that Lutes and Amundson offered seem to have gotten lost in the buzz of Elder’s Compromise.
One alternative to building over the cemetery was a plan for a “relocation in kind” which involved creating a duplicate of the existing cemetery somewhere else in Eugene, and moving the bodies to the duplicate cemetery. This would have freed up land for any building project the UO might’ve had.
Lutes and Amundson also suggested a relocation of the graves with a more consolidated design and relocation to a perpetual care cemetery where a fund is used for general maintenance and repair of cemetery grounds or, finally, a compression of the cemetery on the existing land.
The buzz over developing the cemetery finally died down for good when the university expanded elsewhere and the cemetery was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Then and Now
These days, the UO is no longer trying to expand on or above the Pioneer Cemetery, but it is expanding nonetheless.
In December 2018, the university released its 10-year capital plan detailing how, over the course of the next decade, the university plans to renovate existing buildings and build new ones.
When asked about the plan for buildings on stilts above the cemetery, Michael Harwood, associate vice president and university architect at the UO, says, “I never realized we had this bad idea.”
As far as current involvement with the cemetery goes, Harwood says one of the university’s staff members sits on its board, but that’s the extent of it.
The 10-year capital plan is “our attempt to lay out for the future our capital needs,” he says. He calls the plan the “third link in a chain” that starts with an academic plan, followed by a space plan that assesses what spaces on campus are going to grow.
Harwood says there aren’t many new buildings in the plan “because we think that the space we have will accommodate our growth at the moment.”
Existing buildings will be renovated to be more accessible to alter-abled students, faculty and staff. Plumbing, mechanical and electrical systems will be replaced to “reduce the energy and maintenance costs,” according to the plan.
Some new buildings that were in the plan, such as Tykeson Hall and the Lyllye Reynolds-Parker Black Cultural Center, are finished and in use in the 2019-2020 school year.
Perhaps the biggest change to the UO is the creation of the Phil and Penny Knight Campus for Accelerating Scientific Impact, which has already displaced several businesses on Franklin Boulevard.
The Knight Campus is not to be confused with the Knight Library, the William K. Knight Law Center or the Matthew Knight Arena, which are existing buildings for which the Knight family has made financial contributions to fund construction or renovation over the years.
The 160,000-square-foot first phase of Knight Campus is projected to be completed by 2020, according to the University of Oregon 10 year capital plan. Around the O says the Knight Campus is a “$1 billion initiative aimed at integrating research, training and entrepreneurship into a single, nimble, interdisciplinary enterprise.”
Historic Hayward Field was under construction the entirety of the 2018-2019 school year and is being pushed through for spring 2020, including late night work. It’s a prime example of history that did, in fact, get destroyed at the hands of the university when Phil Knight waved a good chunk of change in front of them and other donors followed suit.
The historic East Grandstand, where fans once watched Steve Prefontaine run by, was demolished, despite public outcry, protests by local activists and a call to preserve the structure.
According to the university’s online information, once renovations are completed, Hayward Field will include a new nine-lane track, spacious seats and a tower in the northeast corner that will feature “interpretive exhibits” and an observation deck.
The UO declined to discuss the Hayward tower with EW, referring reporters to the website, so Eugene will have to wait until track season to find out what exactly these “interpretive exhibits” are.
Hayward Field will also house classrooms and labs for the department of human physiology.
The Future of the University
Landscape architecture professor Thoren says that, for the time, ideas like the one for the cemetery were progressive and idealistic, but when we look back with hindsight they look a bit silly.
Time will tell if the same can be said for the university’s new and future developments.
In her work, Thoren is interested in “the role that place and landscape have in reinforcing cultural identity and also helping to create cultural identity.”
“One of the things that I love about this campus is the role that the landscape plays in structuring. It has a figure, and buildings fit into that figure,” she says. “But the landscape rooms are themselves important.”
Thoren adds, “If we begin to lose the landscape, we begin to lose part of what makes us the University of Oregon.”
Exhuming the Cemetery Dispute
Founded 1872 by Spencer Butte Lodge No. 9 of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Pioneer Cemetery was formally platted in 1892. Years later, a dispute arose over just who was the governing body of the Pioneer Cemetery.
According to The Eugene Pioneer Cemetery: A Historical Overview by Elizabeth Oster, a man by the name of Ben Dorris called a meeting in 1954 of the Odd Fellows Cemetery Association.
The Odd Fellows Lodge had owned the cemetery for many years but had failed to live up to the standard of maintenance that new cemetery laws required. The meeting appointed a new board of trustees in hopes of better maintenance.
The new board staged a takeover and executed articles of incorporation under the name Pioneer Memorial Park Association.
The stated purpose of this new organization was “to acquire the interests in the cemetery property held by the Lodge and the Odd Fellows Cemetery Association and to operate and maintain it on a businesslike basis.”
Others believed that the association’s true objective was to secure the title of the property so the cemetery could be destroyed and the land could be sold to the University of Oregon. They believed the new board was setting the stage for a business deal with its next-door neighbors.
In her 2012 thesis on the history of the Pioneer Cemetery, Elisabeth Kramer writes, “The relationship between the UO and the cemetery is like any association between longtime neighbors.”
To make things even more complicated, two years after the coup, in 1956, the Odd Fellows Cemetery Association changed its name to the Eugene Pioneer Cemetery Association in hopes of disassociating itself from the Lodge and once again acquiring the rights to the cemetery from the Pioneer Memorial Park Association.
Almost a decade passed and in January 1963 the UO wanted to expand but found itself bumping up against the nearby cemetery. Local architecture firm Lutes and Amundson created plans for the UO’s potential expansion.
In the midst of all this arose “Elder’s Compromise,” named after Oregon state Rep. Ed Elder, which proposed the plan, detailed by Lutes and Amundson, of constructing buildings above the cemetery, allowing for both expansion and preservation, on some level, of the historic cemetery.
A Daily Emerald article from Feb. 14, 1963, “Bridge It or Build On It, But By All Means Buy It,” urged the university to purchase the land and decide what to do with it, and supported Elder’s Compromise.
Another article quotes Harold Edmunds, chairman of the cemetery association, as saying the association “will give consideration to anything the university thinks practical…”
In September, the Eugene Pioneer Cemetery Association, the group that wanted to preserve the property, and the Pioneer Memorial Park Association, which owned and was responsible for maintaining the property, went to court. The Eugene Pioneer Cemetery Association charged that the Pioneer Memorial Park Association allowed the cemetery to become overgrown and unsightly.
Meanwhile, the Daily Emerald published yet another article about the cemetery controversy in October, saying, “The petitions filed last month alleged that it is not the intention of the present association directors to maintain the cemetery but to make available to the state board of higher education portions for the university campus.”
This reflects the suspicions of those who believed the Memorial Park group had all along intended to sell the land.
The case litigated until August 1964, when the Pioneer Memorial Park Association was dismissed from court because it proved to a judge that it “did not have the funds to maintain the property and no means of acquiring any.”
The Pioneer Memorial Park Association was freed from any allegations of letting the property become intentionally overgrown — it simply didn’t have the funds to maintain it.
In 1969, the university continued to try to acquire the cemetery property. A bill introduced in the Legislature would have allowed for the cemetery to be condemned, absorbed into the university and built over. It was not the first bill of its kind, and like the others, the bill did not pass.
In 1970, the cemetery had another day in court, and for similar reasons. Harrison R. Kincaid, a cemetery lot owner, brought the Pioneer Memorial Park Association along with university President Robert Clark and former President Arthur Fleming, among others, to trial for a suit in damages amounting to $200,000.
Kincaid alleged “the Pioneer Memorial Park Association and its associates were purposely allowing the property to degenerate in conspiracy with the university so that it might be condemned and then declared open for sale and rezoning, resulting in the relocation of the burials.”
If true, it would make the process of obtaining the land much easier for the university.
In 1971, a judge ruled in favor of the defendants because Kincaid failed to provide sufficient evidence that a conspiracy was happening.
After 1971, the Pioneer Memorial Park Association “ceased to be active concerning the cemetery,” according to Oster, who wrote The Eugene Pioneer Cemetery.
As it turns out, four Medal of Honor winners had been buried at the cemetery, qualifying it to be on the National Register of Historic Places. Once it attained that designation, talks of the university buying the cemetery dissolved.
Kramer’s thesis explains that by the late 1990s “the needs of the university had also adjusted as land was purchased to the east of campus, shifting the focus away from the cemetery.” — Asia Zeller

Yesterday, The Belmont Soda Works – rose from the ashes like a Phoenix Bird. That a Senator refers to Jason Bourne and “spy movies and books” is a REAL COUP for me, and a testimonial to my amazing research, and this blog. My Man In The Field, Spooky Noodles, suggested more than once, important people -must be reading Royal Rosamond Press! Four of my characters suffer from a Generalized Anxiety Disorder. The clip went viral on social media earlier this week, prompting conservatives to mock the ad.
“If you’re a Chinese communist, or an Iranian Mullah, or Kim Jong Un…would this scare you? We’ve come a long way from Jason Bourne,” Cruz tweeted late Monday, mentioning the protagonist of the “Bourne Identity” spy movies and books.
A CIA spokeswoman told Insider: “In 2019, we started our ongoing social media series, “Humans of CIA,” for real officers to share their firsthand experiences.”
Trump also tweeted, “China and Russia love this,” adding in a second tweet that the two countries were “laughing their asses off watching CIA go full woke. ‘Cisgender.’ ‘Intersectional.’”

Senator Ted Cruz made disparaging remarks about a CIA advertisement that featured a woman who labeled herself in a manner that offended Senator Cruz. Because the Central Intelligence Agency is a United States Government institution, paid for by Tax Payers, I believe it is wise to found a Private Company that has the best interests of the U.S. at heart, and owns Bad Intentions for our Enemies who threaten us. My company will be an overt enterprise, verses a covert company that disguises its true intentions. Because I rendered the protagonists of my Spy Novel ‘The Royal Janitor’ a bi-sexual, and other characters, homosexual, I have shown that I am All Inclusive. Cissgender works for me.
True Patriotism does not come with any other labels attached. If you love your country, you are qualified. There is no training for work at the CIA in the private sector. I will teach writers how to author a Spy and Detective novels, and do works of art with a powerful message. I am kin to Ian Fleming via Elizabeth Rosemond Taylor. My grandparents were friends of Black Mask authors. Royal Rosamond went camping with Dashiell Hammett. We are a Think Tank. Analyzing information is key to anticipating the next move of foes.
I am employing the name of a company owned and operated by one of my kin, William Janke, who lived in Belmont, and made a soda. I will use the Belmont Soda Works Ca. bottle as my logo. This will include a horseshoe in the cote of arms I will design.

- The CIA released a recruitment ad starring a Latina officer identifying as a “cisgender millennial.”
- It’s part of the “Humans of CIA” series meant to attract a more diverse pool of candidates.
- Sen. Ted Cruz and Donald Trump Jr. mocked the CIA on Monday; Trump said it’d gone “full woke.”
Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas and Donald Trump Jr. have derided the CIA for releasing a recruitment ad starring a female staffer who celebrated being a “cisgender millennial” with anxiety.
The video, released on YouTube by the CIA as part of its “Humans of CIA” series on March 25, sees a Latina woman talk candidly about identity and success.
“I am a woman of color. I am a mom. I am a cisgender millennial who has been diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder. I am intersectional, but my existence is not a box-checking exercise,” the woman says.
“I did not sneak into CIA,” she adds. “I earned my way in, and I earned my way up the ranks.”
