The King and Queen of Bohemia

Portrait of Walt Whitman

Walt Whitman, in foreground, seated, at Pfaff’s, New York, NY, 1857. Library of Congress

1856
Whitman writes for Life Illustrated, and publishes a second edition of Leaves of Grass.

1857-1859
Whitman edits the Brooklyn Times. Much of his spare time in this period is spent at Pfaff’s, a restaurant in lower Manhattan favored by bohemian artists and writers.

I did not hear from my daughter and grandson this Christmas. History will name those who defamed and besmirched my character. With the claim Clapp brought “bohemianism” to the U.S. one is required to ask….from where did he bring it? Is the answer – Germany? It was from Germany that Carl Janke brought his idea of creating a Theme Pack and a Beer Garden in America. There is the idea Carl owned the land that the German Hall was built on, that had a Rathskeller! Did the Janke family sell their Soda Pop in this amazing place, that was like the German White House in the West? Were the pioneer California Germans aware of their Bohemian Brothers and Sister in New York that gathered in Pfaff’s Cellar – where Walt Whitman held court and encouraged an American Literature and Free Press Renaissance .I entered a pome in a Belmont Poetry of some kind. The Poet Laureate of Belmont was confused? Or, did she pretend to be? Members of the Belmont Historical Society – knew it was curtains for them if I made Belmont the home for my newspaper ‘Royal Rosamond Press’

On this day, December 30, 2024, I John Presco found The New Saturday Press in Belmont California at the base of the Great Bay Tree, where one rested the remains of Carl and Dorothea Janke. Need I say, Walt Whitman would approve, along with the King and Queen of New York Bohemianism, who somehow go foreword,,,,,,,in the leaves of grass!

Clapp, nicknamed the “King of Bohemia” and credited with importing the term “bohemianism” to the U.S, was a central part of the antebellum New York literary and art scene.

Belasco, Susan. “From the Field: Walt Whitman’s Periodical Poetry.” American Periodicals. 14.2 (2004): 247-59.

Belasco notes that Whitman argued for his theme of “Home Literature” in an unsigned article that appeared in the New York Saturday Press in 1860. “Whitman urged Americans to compose ‘Our own song, free, joyous, masterful.” Whitman also argued that his readers should pay attention to American writers: “You, bold American! And ye future two hundred millions bold Americans, can surely never live, for instances, entirely satisfied and grow to your full stature, on what the importations hither of foreign bards, dead or alive, provide–nor on what is echoing here the letter and spirit of the foreign bards” (249).

“and quickly acquired most of it.”

I insist the History Department of Stanford assist me in gathering all the information there is on Carl Janke and Family so it can be studied.. I will post in increments. Two of the portable houses that Janke brought around the Cape were erected in San Francisco. Carl built a Turnverein Hall in the city my father was born.

Remarks: My father was the first to bring portable houses to the city. I believe two were erected where Sherman & Clays Music store now stands (Sutter & Kearney). One on Montgomery Street on part of the lot now occupied by the D.O Mills building and two on Folsom Street near First All were covered with slate roofs. My two brothers wore the flag of the Old Fusilier Guard. A building company called California Fusiliers (German) of which Colonel  Little was the captain. My father also built and managed the first Turn Verein Hall situated on Bush Street near Powell. The hall was dedicated Christmas Eve and all the people of note in the city attended the exercises.

The Saturday Press was a literary weekly newspaper, published in New York City from 1858 to 1860 and again from 1865 to 1866, edited by Henry Clapp Jr.[1]

Clapp, nicknamed the “King of Bohemia” and credited with importing the term “bohemianism” to the U.S, was a central part of the antebellum New York literary and art scene. Today he is perhaps best known for his spotlighting of Walt WhitmanFitz-James O’Brien, and Ada Clare – all habitués of the bohemian watering hole named Pfaff’s beer cellar – in The Saturday Press.[1] Clapp intended the Press to be New York’s answer to The Atlantic Monthly. The Press was constantly troubled by financial problems, and Clapp died in poverty and obscurity.[2]

[1] During the height of her acting career, she frequented Pfaff’s Cellar, where she became known as the “Queen of Bohemia”. She also wrote for the Saturday Press, an iconoclastic weekly magazine of the arts.[1]

The California Hall (formerly Das Deutches Haus) was built in 1912 in San Francisco and had a Rathskeller restaurant in the basement.[2]

The Rathskeller in Boston was a famous rock and roll club from 1974 to 1997, a locus of Boston’s alternative rock scene, hosting local bands like The Cars and Pixies as well as many other bands such as The Police and Metallica before they achieved breakthrough fame.

California Hall, originally named Das Deutsche Haus[3] (EnglishThe German House, sometimes also referred to in incorrect German as Das Deutsches Haus), is a historic commercial building and event venue built in 1912, located in the Polk Gulch/Tenderloin neighborhood in San Francisco, California.[4]

THE MASQUERADE BALL. A Very Successful Carnival in Germania Hall. The Hook and Ladder Company Pleased With Their Hall. Henutlfiil Costume*.

“ Is she a man.” “•No, I think she is a girl.” The band was playing a lively air and all the gaily decked masquers with their strange, fanciful and pretty costumes were in motion. The jovial jester, the sober monk, “ legrande dame,” ‘‘la Espanola Scnora,” the Mexican hidalgo, Italian nobleman and American gentleman were all there. A boot-black jostled against the Spaniard and Tojtsy against the dude; the ghost walked into the pumpkin and his Satanic majesty found Night to be a pleasant companion. A Chinaman tried to strike up a conversation with a couple of Southerland sisters, the representatives of the regular army got stranded near the Five Points, while the Grand Army man and several American Hug girls seemed intuitively attracted toward each other, and clowns, Italians, sailors, last year beauties, Indians, cowboys, Irishmen,, plump arms, tapir limbs, sable faces and a thousand and one gauzy, gaudy and gilded beings with filmy laces aud fairy-like dresses, floated here and there to the tinkle of bells and a tambourine, the ripple of laughtet and whispered joke, and wound in and out, up and down in a maze of delicious figures, tints and colors. It was the night of the annual masquerade ball given by the Hook and Ladder Company. Every fellow who had one had brought his sweetheart, lost her and then enjoyed the privilege of trying to find her. A clasp of the hand, a whispered word and then they recognized each other and were already for the evening’s pleasure. The fellow who did not have a sweetheart turned clown or something else and punched the fellow in the ribs who had one. Some three hundred people and over came for the privilege of sitting down, keeping still and watching other people’s fun for the two hours proceeding 11 o’clock, when every body had a chance to dance.

Many of the costumes were very pretty and those who assumed special characters were generally quite successful in carrying them out. Excellent music added to the enjoyment. The general management of the ball was good and reflected credit on the firemen in charge, who all appeared in the regulation red shirt. The decorations were harmonious and effective. Upon the right bands of red, white and blue were stretched along the side wall with groups of fans in the loupes. Fire axes were crossed and a central wreath encircled a fireman’s hat. Similar colored cloth on the left was arranged in graceful forms between the windows and emblematic ladders were hung near the tnlddfe. Kvergreen ropes rtretchetf from the four corners to the center of the room and below hung a huge wreath with a silver ladder within. Claude Fox, C. A. Jacobus, C. E. Knights, Miss Frye and Miss Minnie Stalter were appointed a committee to award the various prizes offered. Shortly before 11 o’clock they awarded them as follows: For the best sustained lady costume, “ Topsy,” Mies Gertrude Lindsey of Belmont. For the most original lady character, “Money Costume,” Miss Lulu Janke of Belmont. For the prettiest lady costume, “Fancy Dress,” Miss Frankie Morris of San Francisco. A . For the best sustained gentleman character, “ Chinaman,” James Moscow of Redwood City. For the most original gentleman costume, “Five Points,” Phil Steinhaimer of Redwood City. For the prettiest gentleman costume, “Don Carlos,” Wm. Janke. Mr. Thompson was Floor Manager and Dan Daly, P. Genochio, W. Havey and T. Thompson the Floor Committee. Antone Genochio, Dan Mullen and H. Mourot constituted the Committee of Arrangements. The Reception Committee consisted of O. Dodge, J. Daly, L. Bettannier, M. Boyd, R. Badie, J. Metes, A. Hanson, Geo. Whooton, L. Genochio and Jos. Kussell. The supper was served at Price’s Hotel, where the large dining hall had been nicely decorated with evergreen. Three tables were arranged the entire length of the room and presented a pretty Scene previous to the supper, with the crystal ware reflecting the colors of numerous bouquets. Supper was served 280 people, 140 being seated at one time.

Don Carlos (GermanDon Karlos, Infant von Spanien,[nb 1][1] German pronunciation: [dɔn ˈkaʁlɔs ɪnˈfant fɔn ˈʃpaːni̯ən] ) is a (historical) tragedy in five acts by Friedrich Schiller; it was written between 1783 and 1787 and first produced in Hamburg in 1787.

Plot

[edit]

The title character is Carlos, Prince of Asturias and the play as a whole is loosely modeled on historical events in the 16th century under the reign of King Philip II of Spain. Don Carlos is a Prince of Spain, given to the Spanish Inquisition by his father (who also wants to marry Carlos’ lover) due to his Libertarian creeds. Another great Romantic character is the Marquis of Posa dying for the liberty of the Dutch Republic as well as ruling Catholic Spain during the Reformation and the Counter-Reformation.

The Habsburg Law and Rightful King of Bohemia

Posted on December 22, 2023 by Royal Rosamond Press

Christmas has come early to the rightful King of Bohemia and Jerusalem because I just discovered the Hapsburg Law. I’m looking for a International Attorney in order to claim the Last Audience of the Habsburgs, and other property owned by the Habsburgs. I highly suggest the Czech Republican consider my claim if they want to receive help from the Americas. And – provide protection for Christians who want to visit the Holy Land this Christmas.

Dear Sir,

your information was forwarded to the Austrian Consulate General. Please give us more details why you to your mind the mentioned canvas was smuggled out of Austria and who did that.

Kind regards

I found this day The New Bohemian Puritan Church upon the union of Lady Erasmus, and Robert Wilson. The Evangelicals have launched a Catholic-like rebellion against a true Democracy that Pope Francis – must address! The Protestant Church of America is guilty of Popism, and must purge itself of Trumpism, the worst heresy ever to visit Christianity.

Here is the new group I formed, and my message to Karel Schwarzenberg.

Dear Karel;

I came upon your article posted on your facebook about a “Pirate Party” and the “Civil War” Above is a portrait of Queen Elizabeth with eyes and ears on her dress. This denotes the spy network she established to keep track of the Habsburg Spanish Empire, that the Schwarzenberg family was an ally of. The Jessie Scouts was formed around my relative, Jessie Benton-Fremont, in order to spy on the foreigners in Mexico, including Maximillian von Habsburg. John Fremont is a co-founder of the Abolitionist Republican Party, and was that parties first Presidential Candidate. Over a year ago it was revealed you are related to them and my Rosamond kin. You may be kin to John Wilson seen above – who looks like you! You may be kin to General Robert E. Lee, and Christopher Lee who is being knighted.

I am kin to Elizabeth Rosemond Taylor, and Ian Fleming who created the spy, James Bond, who was assigned a number invented by John Dee. Dee was Queen Elizabeth’s favorite councilor. He appears to have set up the Queen’s Spy Unit. Dee was a guest of your relative, William Rosenberg, at Trebon castle where you might have stayed. Queen Elizabeth sent Sir Francis Drake on a exploration of the New World. Drake claimed California for Elizabeth, naming it New Albion.

I am looking for people to establish a Euro-California origination who would represent the interests of our Allies in trade across the Pacific. Fremont helped secure California and the Oregon Territory from the Russians and British. We would be honored if you would lend your expertise in this formation. Your openness and transparency – is stellar! California has the fifth largest economy in the world – that would become even more power with a bond with European Nations! I do not see the New Albion Union being run by politicians, but by men and women who own a certain vision, that I hope you can help define.

I was raised Catholic. Members of the Order of Saint Francis are my relatives. The Rosamond family were members of the Orange Lodge. As a theologian, I have ideas that will end the divide between the Catholic and Protestant Religion, and aim those ears and eyes at those who mean to do us harm, and take away our Common Liberty.

Sincerely

John Presco

Support Karel Schwarzenberg. I just formed a new group. Karel Schwarzenberg and his family have stood up to the greatest tyrants of our time. My Preskowitz ancestors came to American from Bohemia. Karel complains that Putin treats the Czech Republic like a colony. Many Bohemians found a new home in Nebraska. Let us create an organization similar to the British Defence Staff of Washington so we can own a Hands Across the Water Bond, that will stand up to all tyrants, as is our Common Tradition.

Karl Schwarzenberg and The Habsburg Audience

Posted on July 23, 2018 by Royal Rosamond Press

For several years I have been trying to bring to the attention of the Austrian Government the existence of the large canvas at the University of Oregon Museum titled ‘The Last Audience of the Habsburgs’ that was smuggled out of Austria. Alas, I have found just the right person. He is my kindred, Karl Schwarzenberg, who himself had to flee a oppressive regime. Karl opposes Putin, and backs Britain. I will contact him and see if he would like to come give a talk on this painting. His relative, Prince Felix Schwarzenberg, restored the Habsburg Empire.

John Presco

President: Royal Rosamond

The law stripped the Habsburgs of their sovereign rights and banished all Habsburgs from Austrian territory. Charles was barred from ever returning to Austria again. Other Habsburgs were only allowed to return if they renounced all dynastic claims and accepted status as private citizens. Those assets of the state that had been under the administration of the imperial court, the so-called Hofärar, were placed under the government’s management. The private funds and family funds of the House of Habsburg, common family property administered by the respective head of the house, were expropriated and transferred to the state property. Personal private property was preserved.

Permission to enter was granted to the last empress, Zita of Bourbon-Parma, without a waiver, in 1982, because she was a Habsburg only by marriage and could therefore make no claim to the imperial throne.

Cjristmas has come early to the Titular King of Bohemian – and Jerusalem!
