Dylan, Blades, Shakespeare, and Chai

““The argument in favor of the contribution of the popular musician would have been more complete if it had been the prize shared with Chico and thus the musical literary contribution from an important part of non-Saxon America had been recognized,” Blades remarked

I told my friend Spooky Noodles I wanted to blog on the Bob Dylan Art show, but, was going to save it for an article I would like to sell for the New Yorker Magazine. THEN, this morning I find an article wherein Ruben Blades suggests Bob Dylan should have shared his Nobel Prize with Chico Buarque. WTF? I told Spooky about Dylan giving allot of credit to Shakespeare for his – award! He claims he read The Bard. Has Ruben and Chico read……..THE SAXON?

“His creative vision and ambitions were no doubt at the forefront of his mind, but there were also more mundane matters to consider and deal with. “Is the financing in place?” “Are there enough good seats for my patrons?” “Where am I going to get a human skull?” I would bet that the farthest thing from Shakespeare’s mind was the question “Is this literature?”

Bob Dylan on Will Shakespeare (shakespearemagazine.com)

Ruben labels Dylan a “saxon” in a around the Cape sort of way of saying he sang WHITE ENTERTAINMENT MUSIC. Spooky and I talked about Dylan’s father being a Jew, and how Anglo-Saxon Youth took note of this, because Rock-a-Billy comes from thee Scott-Irish Ozark followers of William of Orange, who rebelled against Protestant England, who beheaded Mary Queen of Scots because she was flirting with the Spanish Habsburg Empire that sent two armadas against that Protestant Witch – Queen Elizabeth! Elizabeth knighted pirates to steal the Incan Aztec gold being stolen from butchered Native Americans, thus, THIS SAXON QUEEN saved he lives of Ruben and Chico’s ancestors – WHO WERE CATHOLICS! Elizaeth may have seen one of William’s plays. She employed actors, authors, playwrights, poets, and masters of Rhetoric, to thwart Emperor von Habsburg amabition to make the whole world Spanish Speakers.

All of South America is built on a Catholic Culture, verses a Protestant Culture the Radicl Pilgrims brought to the New World after being driven out by British Royalty. They lived in Holland and Geneva. Then there are the Sephardic Jews! How many Central and South American Radicals dropped LSD and tripped to Bob Dylan. And, now they wanted to help their Hippie Brother and Sister in the North take on the most powerful military in the world, verses taking on another Banana Belt Dictator? Ho-hum!

Yesterday I hung up on my old friend, Christine Wandel, who claims she was intimate with Ruben Blades around 1978. They met at The Bottom Line and interacted for a year. Six days ago I offered to buy her and her daughter, Julie, tickets to Ruben’s show at Madison Square Garden. Here is my text exchange with my old friend Peter Shapiro, who was the lead guitarist for The Marbles and The Loading Zone. Peter and Chris met at a Mill’s College Mixer, at a frat house, where her future lover was playing with his band – whose name will remain a secret – for my book. This was 1964.

GREG: “Ruben’s son came forth and was denied till the papers found out. I posted the good news on Ruben’s Facebook but C made me remove it. C isn’t interested in the son and his kids. Looks like more fun and games.”

GREG: “Ruben is going to perform at Madison Square Garden Dec.2. I offered to buy C and the Love Child tickets to have a Miracle Story for my paper. Our musical has a new title…Kids On The Roof. We got Salsa. Do you really think I have money?”

PETER: “you look like a prosperous sort, beard and all, well-fed. how she get mixed up with blades?”

I told Spooky that Dylan should charge a Lincoln, a twenty dollar bill to see his art. This is when I learned of the 18 Good Luck Charm – with Chai – the eighteenth letter of the Hebrew Alphabet. Christine and our friends were SERIOUS DYLAN FREAKS. We knew the manufacturers of LSD. Seven years ago I wanted to go to New York and write a story about Christine, Stefan Eins, and, Vinnie The Chin of The Village. My old lover said she wanted to write down her interpretation of her favorite Dylan album. This spawned a movie idea. I am an aspiring Script Writer. If Christine had told me about Ruben, then I would have wanted him in the story. Is there a Nobel Prize for Journalism?

Chico uses Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane to disguise a forbidden message. I am authoring a book on this garden. How cryptic of all of us? The truth is, if Ruben or Chico ever said anything bad about the Pope and the Catholic religion, they would lose half their ENTERTAINMENT audience. Siring children out of wedlock, is not cool with devout Catholics. I believe Dylan played a huge role in the Sexual Revolution, and gave WRITTEN PERMISSION to change the status quo, and employ dialogue in seducing a woman, and vice versa. Words really mattered as any American preacher would tell you. But, they did not want the POWER OF WORDS in the hands of secular missionaries, out to change the world. Beatlemania is credited with bringing down the Soviet Union. The Fab Four and Dylan sent coded messages to one another. The Queen’s spies found a home at the theatres Shakespeare ran.

Blades claims he is educated. But, he is a politician. He got caught playing politics with Bob Dylan. What in the hell is he thinking? I’m going to call Christine and tell that her ex-Lover grabbed her idol’s award out of his hand, and handed it to a fellow Latino he believes is purely radical. Christine reminded me of Christie Julie in Doctor Zhivago. Living in Berkeley was like that! Let us not forget the tender flirtations Latino Nations have had with Communist Russia that is being debated in our Congress in an insane manner. When young men and women are not running from mounted Cossacks, they are slipping into a darkened doorway and having sexual intercourse! And, that’s a fact Jack!

P.S. I just talked to Christine at 11:40 A.M. She was up all night due to us arguing. I told her some truths are out – in a cryptic MANner. This SLAP comes from a baby in a blanket – born by some Latino – that Ruben quotes – then disowns? I want the dudes – NAME! Did it come from a Spanish Conquistador? His name is RUBEN BLADES!

Blades also acknowledges that the literature prize awarded to Bob Dylan has provoked all kinds of reactions and complaints from a sector that considers that the lyrics of popular music “should only serve to entertain, that it should be an exclusive vehicle for escape, that it is vulgar and therefore cannot be considered as of serious intellectual level.

Blades finds that perspective “extremely elitist and therefore biased.”

Did a reporter ask Ruben questions, and thus we get something that resembles a back-handed compliment, but, is a Snatch-And- Run! Spoken like a true politician – out of both sides of his mouth, he on the campaign trail for his Latino Political Soul Brother. Did Dylan ever run for office?

Last night I said this to Christine;

“You walked naked to my bed. You had to have me because I was too mysterious for you – and others! I was of another tribe. You caused a riff between my best friend and I. You caused trouble for all the males in that house!”

I almost called Christine back and said;

“I was not done fucking you. We had just begun. They should have sent you to me every Thursday. You would pack a little overnight bag – and your high heels. Our Brothers of Eternal Love knew they were being hypocritical. THEY possessed you – like an object. They bought into – ownership! We would have made extra hard love – for the cause!”

NOW THAT’S LITERATURE! I have to find the poem I wrote, and read in public, it inspired by Christine’s confession, that she had to have me after watching me work on a large canvas in my studio next to the sound room.

Where does one go to get a “complete argument” if not the Big Apple? How about the – complete fuck? How about – total entertainment? If Ruben wants to debate me on the Dylan Prize, e-mail me….

Gosh do I miss that Ol’ Saxon Total Entertainment Package they used to have down in Rio by the Sea-o! What if Elizabeth had not sunk the Spanish fleet?

Rubén Blades – Wikipedia

Singer-songwriter Rubén Blades, whose “thinking man’s salsa” has earned him praise as the Bob Dylan of Latin America, reflects on his astonishing 50-year career as he embarks on his final tour. But this Grammy winner, actor, and Harvard educated activist is far from retiring, instead planning a new run for the office of President of Panama.

Panamanian singer-songwriter Ruben Blades claimed that legendary singer-songwriter Bob Dylan deserves to have received the 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature, but regretted that the Swedish Academy has not been “broader” in sharing the award with Brazilian Chico Buarque.

“Let’s avoid discussion from elitist perspectives. Dylan deserves the award, for the quality of his work and for having continuously sustained that quality through experiments and renovations,” the multiple Latin and American Grammy Award winner said on his website.

However, the author of Pedro Navaja stated that he “only regretted that the perspective of the Swedish Academy has not been broader” for not recognizing Buarque, one of the most famous representatives of the so-called Brazilian Popular Music (MPB), author of classics such as Construction.

Authors like Chico Buarque, said the artist and former Panamanian Minister of Tourism, “deserve that consideration as well. Not only is he an excellent composer, but he is also a playwright and has published well-received novels.”

“The argument in favor of the contribution of the popular musician would have been more complete if it had been the prize shared with Chico and thus the musical literary contribution from an important part of non-Saxon America had been recognized,” Blades remarked.Joaquín Sabina, happy for the Nobel to Bob Dylan

The author of songs such as “A Banda”, “Cálice” and “Apesar de Voce”, which forced him into exile in the 70s during the dictatorship, became famous in the student festivals of the 1960s and since then he got into the pocket of the Brazilian public with his songs-poem.

According to the jury of the Swedish Academy, Dylan has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature 2016 for “having created a new poetic expression within the great tradition of American song”.

“The music critic, Juan Carlos Piedrahita, highlighted how Blades “turned his stories into a sample of the best Latin American chronicle there could be.”

“He took it upon himself to write in actions, not to write in concepts. That is why one imagines the lyrics as he sings, that is one of his great virtues and that is what makes him one of the most important chroniclers in Latin America,” wrote Piedrahita.

On one occasion, the musician and Gabriel García Márquez had an interesting debate. The Nobel Prize winner asked Rubén “if salsa could be a literary genre,” the question left the Panamanian thinking and he decided to answer him through the song “GDBD (Gente Despertando Bajo Dictadura),” a proof that salsa could be a literary genre.

If Blades turned salsa into a literary genre, Caetano Veloso turned Bossa Nova into poetry. At 79 years of age, this other veteran won the gramophone for ‘Record of the Year’ in the company of his son Tom Veloso for the song “Talvez.”

PANAMANIAN salsa singer Ruben Blades, winner of multiple Grammy’s and a man with presidential ambitions has confirmed that he is the father of a 39-year-old  Puerto Rican.

He  made the acknowledgment that Joseph Verne is his biological son, on Facebook. Verne has a 13 year-old daughter, so Blades is also catapulted into the grandfather role.

On  New Year’s Day  Puerto Rican newspapers carried a statement released by Blades on his Facebook shortly before the end of  2014, which clarifies that biological tests conducted in February showed that Verne is his son.

“I want to make a necessary  public statement that I am pleased and satisfied,” said Blades in the statement, recalling that a two years ago Verne publicly stated that there was a possibility that he was the son of the  folk singer which Blades, had always rejected he acknowledged

“In May 2013, however, a relative of mine agreed to a DNA test for. Verne and although the results seemed to demonstrate a clear relationship of consanguinity between the two I was not notified of it. Six months later, in December 2013, a letter was received at my father’s  home in Panama giving thr  the fact, “says  Blades in the statement.

The singer told his lawyers to locate  Verne and arrangements were made for a DNA test be conducted with all three  (his son, the mother and himself).

“Those tests were achieved in February 2014 and the results were conclusive. Joseph Verne, a man of 39 years old, is my biological son . Joseph’s conviction proved to be true and I, of course, was wrong to have considered that there was no such a possibility, ” says Blades.

“Although nothing can ever appease my shame with him and myself, we met in March 2014 and since then have maintained optimal communication including my granddaughter, a bright young 13- year-old,” said Blades in the statement.

The singer said he did not want to make a public announcement without first establishing the basis for a real relationship with his child.

“I do not plan to  make any public statement on the matter. Joseph and I believe that this public notice is clear and sufficient” concludes the statement.

Blades  was Minister of Tourism during the administration of Martin Torrijos (2004-2009.

Chai and the number 18

18, 36, 72, 90, 108… why do Jews make donations and give gifts in multiples of 18? Seems totally random, right?

Maybe not.

In Hebrew, each letter has a numerical value. The number 10 is the letter Yud. The number 8 is the letter Het. Het-Yud spells the word Chai (חי), usually pronounced like the English word “hi” or “high,” which is a word and symbol that means “life.” In fact, a common Jewish toast is “l’chaim!,” which means, “to life!” is often said at celebrations in anticipation of all the good things to come.

Judaism is a religion that emphasizes the importance of life and the hope that supports it. As a result, 18 is a popular number that represents good luck. At weddings, bar mitzvahs, and when making honorary donations, Jews often give gifts of money in multiples of 18, symbolically giving the recipient the gift of “life” or luck.

Following the Brazilian military coup of 1964, Buarque avoided censorship by using cryptic analogies and wordplay. For example, in the song “Cálice” (“Chalice”), a duet written in 1973 with Gilberto Gil and released with Milton Nascimento in 1978,[12] he takes advantage of the homophony between the Portuguese imperative cale-se (“shut up”) and cálice (“chalice”) to protest government censorship, disguised as the Gospel narrative of Jesus’ Gethsemane prayer to God to relieve him of the cup of suffering. The line “Quero cheirar fumaça de óleo diesel” (“I want to sniff diesel fumes”) is a reference to the death of political prisoner Stuart Angel, who reportedly had his mouth glued to a jeep’s exhaust pipe during a torture session.[13] Buarque was close to Stuart’s mother, Zuzu Angel.
