In 1970 I stood on my grandfather’s ship, the U.S.S Constitution, watching a sailor in uniform polish brass fittings.

“I can do this!” I tought. “If I joined the Navy as a conscientious Objector, if they allowed me to serve on Sir Issac Hull’s ship that is still in commission”

Mind you, this is the King of the Hippies who refused to be drafted by the Brotherhood of Eternal Love and lead a Hippie Army against the military industrial complex – from the hippie reservation!

My daughter, Heather Hanson, admonished me two months ago for not serving in the Armed Forces. I suspect this was coming from her new boyfriend, Bill Cornwell, and his father who gagned up on my daughter.
