My hot summer ways

bid me conquer

our longest days

when the world is ours

for the taking

Come the first rain

my cat takes me

to the inner sanctuary

and warms my cold hands

as we listen to

twenty thousand little spashhes

a symphony

that bend over

every blade of grass

Her ear perk up

as the fairy musicians

dance on the tin shed

where rest my garden tools

till spring

I let my hair grow long

to be her bed

when we fall asleep

humbled, deeply humbled

Then she is alert

What is that?

Tis the water

in the clogged leaf drain

spilling over into

my child’s red Radio Flyer

where her naked Barbie Doll

is doing the back…
