A Blank Screen
Tom Blank is on a mission.
A Navy veteran and retired director who served his career in television, Blank and his wife moved in 2005 from Hollywood to Eugene, where he immediately took up the cause of advocating for movies as cultural and spiritual artifacts.
Wildly conversant in the history of film and filmmaking, Blank says that cinema is being threatened by unhindered corporate interests and “the explosion of communication devices” that are making the great tradition of going to the movies redundant. Instead of sitting together in grand theaters for the awesome collective experience of watching a movie, too many of us download movies on our cell phones (“Imagine watching Lawrence of Arabia on an iPhone!” Blank says, laughing), and the movies we do view are largely formula rehash that serve as vehicles for product tie-ins.
“It’s possible to hold cinema as a form that becomes your spiritual life,” Blank says. “Cinema itself is mostly threatened by decision makers who don’t understand it.”
Blank, then, is striving to spark local interest in the cultural and artistic value of movies; he refers to himself as an “advocate” of cinema, and this isn’t just talk; he says there’s no reason Eugene can’t develop a strong film community, which includes filmmaking. Along with hosting frequent screenings for Bijou Metro’s Classics Series, Blank also works closely with DIVA’s Shaggy Dog Project, advising on how to make low-cost short films, and continues to spearhead his Behind the Lens seminars at UO’s Baker Center.
Movies, he says, have intrinsic value not just as entertainment and art, but as an index of a person’s spiritual development as a human being. “I feel that we don’t begin to understand ourselves until we take stock of the influences that have made us the people we have become,” Blank says. “I’m often asked what my favorite movie is, and I counter the query by asking which ones have been the most important to them. The way I look at it, our favorite movies are usually those that we saw in our late teens or early twenties, movies that helped us understand who we wanted to become. Your favorite film could easily be the one that changed your mind when your mind was in desperate need of change.”
Blank says “informed viewership” can enrich one’s experience of films, and in this sense he views his role as host of seminars and screenings as predominantly educational. “What you can do is to empower the viewer to understand that his or her reaction is just as valid as anybody else’s,” he says. “I try to use Socratic techniques to elicit emotional responses from the audience. Once we deal with feelings, we can connect to the whole group.”
As for the local film community, Blank says, “People who actively talk about the movies they see are the film community in Eugene.” He asserts, “What remains to be discovered is how our local officials, our institutions and our theaters will facilitate that need for discussion.”
Blank also believes Eugene can foster a healthy environment for folks interested in making movies. “If you were in Los Angeles you would be constrained by film unions and local regulations that support the studios, so if you want to make guerrilla film, you’re always in the best place,” he says. “The ready availability of cheap digital cameras and fast lenses make it all possible. How much are you willing to inconvenience yourself and the people around you in order to make a movie? That’s up to you. There are support networks and organizations that will help.”

This case is enough to scramble the brains of Einstein,” says the hero of CBS’ “Shakedown on the Sunset Strip” (Channels 2 and 8 at 9 tonight). Unfortunately, Harold Gast’s script doesn’t make this case any easier to follow.
The subject is an actual scandal that resulted in the indictment of a group of Los Angeles Police Department officials in the late ’40s. The story is told from the perspective of Charles Stoker (Perry King), an honest cop whose investigations reveal Police Department kickbacks from Hollywood’s hottest madam (Joan Van Ark).
Stoker’s point of view is hardly omniscient, and confusion arrises when Gast attempts to fill in the missing details. Names and events rush by without adequate identification or explanation. Nor is it easy to see how the opening scene fits into the long flashback that follows.
The sketchy quality of the script not only muddies the story but also inhibits the development of dramatic momentum. On the other hand, a few moments seem oddly repetitious. Near the end, for example, we hear some of the same testimony twice–first in a courtroom, then at a Police Department hearing.

After an attempted robbery of Brenda Allen and Sergeant Jackson in which Jackson shot and killed the perpetrator, the press and other members of the police became aware of their relationship. Wiretaps led to the arrest of Allen and the resulting publicity to the convening of a grand jury.
The publicity from the grand jury revelations of police corruption led to the resignation of L.A.P.D. Chief Clemence B. Horrall and his replacement by retired Marine Major General William A. Worton, who had served with the Marine Corps‘ III Amphibious Corps at the Battle of Okinawa.[2]
Reform[edit]
Worton was appointed by L.A. mayor Fletcher Bowron on a temporary basis. He served from July 1949 to August 1950, when he was replaced as chief by William H. Parker, who had served the General as a special aide and then as head of Internal Affairs. (Horrall’s deputy chief, Joe Reed, also resigned after being shamed by grand jury testimony.) It was Parker, in his 16-year reign as Police Chief, who is credited with cleaning up the L.A.P.D.

Whalen was also charged with robbery and carrying a concealed weapon after a search turned up a .25-caliber automatic hidden in the padding of his car, and $4600 cash. The cops arrested the quartet after Andy McIntyre, proprietor, called for help with some brawling football fans. Whalen was passed out on the floor when deputy sheriffs and Highway Patrolmen arrived, Miss Raaf, Whalen’s housemate above the Sunset Strip, bending over him.
Remmer, who Miss Raaf identified as the operator of the Cal-Neva Lodge — which he was supposed to have sold under duress in 1948 — cursed at and threatened officers and reporters. Sheriffs interrogated the men about the recent Samuel Rummel gang slaying in Laurel Canyon, and told them all to stay out of Los Angeles.
In May 1961, piano man Bobby Troup (aka Mr. Julie London), the regular headliner, was jumped in the parking lot, and punched so hard he lost three teeth. His assailant, coffee salesman Stan Massey, 35, was apparently incensed because the performer spoke with a woman in Massey’s party. Gary Shugart, parking lot attendant, said Massey called Troup out of his car, then started swinging while the other man was off guard. Massey countered that Troup pushed him first, and that he thought the clock (?!) in Troup’s hand could be used as a weapon. Massey was convicted of assault and fined $140. Troup sought $68,305 in civil damages, but if he prevailed, that didn’t make the papers. Troup played a mean “Tenderly,” too.
December 30, 1964 was a Wednesday night. Quiet. George E. Davidson, 50-year-old west side accountant, met his draftsman friend Jose G. Beltran, 29, at the Encore. A shoving match ensued over who was going to pay the bill, Davidson fell, struck his head, and died a few days later. Beltran was picked up at home in Monrovia and charged with murder, after which the sad story vanishes from the press.
But it wasn’t all fisticuffs. If you swung by the place on September 19, 1961, a dinner meeting of the Los Angeles Junior Advertising Club would include discussion on the theme “Entertainment in Advertising,” and far as we know, not one junior exec was left bloody.

We suspect that George Mann, who loved stylish signage, snapped the Encore in the manner he did to include both signs in his composition.

Cyrus the Great ‘King of Persia’ was the only Gentile to be given

Dr. Max Nardau was an atheist who subscribed to Muscular Judaism and

but more so by ones loyalty to Mohammed and Allah. It has become
clear Israel can not stand up to, or get in the way of this
imperative.
Therefore, it is time for Israel and Zion to move into cyber space,
and establish a New Capitol in the New Land. I believe I have found
that New Land and Zion in the Channel Islands off the Coast of
California. There are two islands that would be ideal for the
foundation of a New Zion. One is Santa Rosa Island, and the other
Santa Cruz Island. Cruz means “cross” and was named after a staff
capped with a cross that was found by a Indian on the island, and
returned to the Spanish. How Mosaic.
Santa Cruz is a privately owned Island, and Santa Rosa was purchased
in 1980 by the United States Government and is a National Park. I am
not sure if the Channel Islands in the U.S. Territory. I suggest a
proposal be put before President Bush to turn it over the Nation of
Israel after it restructures its foundation, and adopts a less
adversarial view of it place in the world.
I suggest Santa Cruz Island be purchased for Israel by all the
nations of the world, including the President of Iran. With this
purchase will come a truce and a recognition that will never be
contested again.
Twenty six miles away is the city of Los Angeles which has one of
the largest Jewish populations outside Israel. The New Zion of
Rosacruz could be a Capital of a new direction that can move Zionism
into a inner spiritual space that will be surrounded by the Pacific
Ocean. I see a New Atlantis, and new Trade Members of the Pacific
Rim. I see a Capital for World Ecology and World Peace. And even
though we may be losing a pristine part of the world, we may be
saving the world billions of dollars, and much anguish and
destruction due to the never ending Crisis in the Middle East that
is consuming the world’s resources and surpluses that can be
redirected to the problems of global warming, and other sources of
fuel oil. Here is a new Eden that can research how to build new
habitats, invent new attitudes of how Mankind dwells in the Creation.
