The Château de Haroué is the work of the architect Germain Boffrand (1667-1754) for the prince Marc de Beauvau – Craon, friend of childhood of the Duke Léopold (1690-1729). Marc was also viceroy of Tuscany, prince of the Holy Roman Empire, great of Spain and recognized cousin of King Louis XV.
In 1704, he married Anne-Marguerite de Lignéville, descendant of an old family of lorraine chivalry, with which he had 20 children, including Charles-Just (1720-1793), who was a member of the Académie française and Marshal of France under Louis XVI.
The Château de Haroué was built between 1720 and 1732 on the foundations of the castle of François de Bassompierre. The time Bassompierre (second half of the 16th century and first half of the 17th century) remains including farm buildings among which you can visit the stables and a dovecote.
Boffrand marks the castle of originality because it is the symbol of the time that elapses because there are 365 windows, 52 chimneys, 12 towers and turrets and 4 bridges.
Lorraine artists were involved in beautification, as Jean Lamour who coined the grid of honour, those balconies, or even the grand staircase; Barthélémy Guibal has deployed his art in 6 groups of sculpted children located in the cour d’honneur and the terrace garden.
During the visit you can admire the beautiful Chinese Lounge decorated by Jean Pillement, unique in Lorraine; but also the tapestries of the goblins telling the epic tale of Alexandre the great, or even furniture commissioned by Louis XVIII (King of France from 1814 to 1824) to the Château de Saint-Ouen.
At the end of the visit, you will be able to stroll in the Park à la française created by Marc de Beauvau-Craon, seventh and last prince who died in 1982, in collaboration with landscape architect Emilio Terry. Then you will appreciate the elegant flowering of the English garden designed by Cyndie Simon.
Often referred to as a ‘Palace in the countryside’ Château de Haroué but is first and foremost a house “inhabited” by the descendants of Prince Marc of Beauvau – Craon and his wife Anne-Marguerite.
