Sir Keir Starmer has slammed Donald Trump’s false claims that Nato troops stayed away from the front line in the conflict in Afghanistan as “insulting and frankly appalling” and demanded an apology.

The prime minister joined veterans and politicians from across the political spectrum in his condemnation of Mr Trump, who has enraged Nato allies by claiming he is not sure the alliance would “be there if we ever needed them”.

And he was joined by Prince Harry, who said the “sacrifices” of British soldiers who served and died in Afghanistan “deserve to be spoken about truthfully and with respect”.

Sir Keir said: “I consider President Trump’s remarks to be insulting and frankly appalling, and I am not surprised they have caused such hurt to the loved ones of those who were killed or injured”.

The White House responded to the criticism on Friday night, without issuing an apology.

Based on available records, Vladimir Putin did not fight in the Soviet-Afghan War (1979–1989). While he was an active KGB officer during that period, there is no evidence he was deployed to Afghanistan. He later supported the U.S. campaign in Afghanistan after 9/11 by providing logistical support and intelligence against the Taliban.

  • KGB Service: During the Soviet-Afghan War, Putin was working for the KGB, including a posting in Dresden, East Germany, from 1985 to 1990, not in combat roles in Afghanistan.
  • Post-9/11 Actions: As president, Putin was one of the first leaders to contact President George W. Bush after the 9/11 attacks, subsequently facilitating U.S. efforts by offering airspace for humanitarian aid and intelligence support for the war in Afghanistan.
  • Strategic View: Putin has often viewed the original 1979 Soviet invasion as a complicated, ultimately failed, chapter of Soviet history.

Russian economic aid to Afghanistan had begun as early as 1919, shortly after the Russian Revolution. In 1942, the USSR moved to strengthen the Afghan Armed Forces by providing small arms and aircraft and establishing training centers in TashkentUzbek SSR. Soviet-Afghan military cooperation began on a regular basis in 1956, and further agreements were made in the 1970s, which saw the USSR send advisers and specialists. The Soviets also had interests in the energy resources of Afghanistan, including oil and natural gas exploration from the 1950s and 1960s.[43] The USSR began to import Afghan gas from 1968 onwards.[44] Between 1954 and 1977, the Soviet Union provided Afghanistan with economic aid worth of about 1 billion rubles.[45
