House Democrat: Children in Greenland fear ‘Americans might attack them’

Rep. Madeleine Dean (D-Pa.) said Tuesday that President Trump’s renewed threats of annexing Greenland have left young children in the semiautonomous territory frightened of a possible military attack, calling the president’s comments “nonsense.”
“The president is not making a lot of sense,” Dean, who sits on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, told host Erin Burnett on CNN’s “Erin Burnett OutFront.”
“He wants to possess things. The island of Greenland is not a possession. It’s not an asset for him. They are our ally,” she added.
Dean traveled to Denmark with a bipartisan congressional delegation this week, where they met with the Danish and Greenlandic prime ministers and parliament members.
“One of the most troubling things that we heard while we were there, from the Greenlandic members of Parliament, is that children in Greenland go to bed at night anxious, fearful, sleepless, worried that the Americans might attack them,” Dean said.
“What in God’s name are we doing? We have poured away — well, we haven’t, the president has — poured away respect and trust for our allies and, of course, respect in us. It is up to us, Congress, to reclaim that and tell the president that he is unwell in these ambitions.”
Trump has doubled down on his pressure campaign as he continues to position the strategically located island as vital to U.S. national security interests. He threatened over the weekend to slap 10 percent tariffs on Greenland and other European allies unless and until a deal for U.S. ownership is reached.

Greenlandic and Danish officials have maintained that the island is not for sale and cautioned that any escalation could irreparably damage the longstanding NATO alliance.
“They’re steeled in their belief that this would be crossing an extraordinary red line,” Dean said of the countries’ leaders.
Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said Tuesday that while the U.S. was “not likely” to use military force inside the country, an attack could not be ruled out, according to The New York Times.
Meanwhile, both Democratic and some Republican lawmakers on Capitol Hill are pushing back on the administration’s position.
Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) said Tuesday there was “broad bipartisan opposition” in Congress to any kind of use of force in Greenland.
“If there was an opportunity to negotiate a sale, as in the past with Alaska or the Louisiana Purchase, this is not a new concept. Great. But the use of military force, in my opinion, should be off the table,” Lawler said during an appearance on CNN’s “The Situation Room.”
Dean said she’d spoken with Republican senators who agreed the potential use of military force was an “inane idea.”
“My question is: Why aren’t they speaking up now?” she asked rhetorically, concluding with a direct appeal to her GOP colleagues. “Go to the president and say: ‘This is a bad idea. You are actually in breach of trust of some of our most important allies.’”
Trump appeared to back off somewhat during a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on Wednesday, saying he wouldn’t take over Greenland using force.
“We probably won’t get anything unless I decide to use excessive strength and force where we would be frankly unstoppable. But, I won’t do that,” Trump said. “I don’t have to use force. I don’t want to use force. I won’t use force. All the United States is asking for is a place called Greenland.”
