Smithsonian too focused on ‘how bad slavery was’: TrumpPresident Donald Trump has instructed his lawyers to scour through America’s museums and rid them of exhibits that he calls “woke,” specifically citing exhibits on slavery.
President Donald Trump on Tuesday confirmed the White House is conducting a review of the Smithsonian museums and expressed frustration over their portrayal of dark parts of America’s history, including slavery.
“The Smithsonian is OUT OF CONTROL, where everything discussed is how horrible our Country is, how bad Slavery was, and how unaccomplished the downtrodden have been — Nothing about Success, nothing about Brightness, nothing about the Future,” Trump wrote on his social media platform.

“We are not going to allow this to happen, and I have instructed my attorneys to go through the Museums, and start the exact same process that has been done with Colleges and Universities where tremendous progress has been made,” Trump added. “This Country cannot be WOKE, because WOKE IS BROKE. We have the ‘HOTTEST’ Country in the World, and we want people to talk about it, including in our Museums.”
The Smithsonian declined to comment.

ABC News reported last week that the White House planned to do a wide-ranging review of the Smithsonian Institution’s exhibitions and operations ahead of America’s 250th anniversary next year.

In a letter sent to Lonnie Bunch, the secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, the White House wrote that it wants to ensure that the museums “reflect the unity, progress, and enduring values that define the American story.”
When Trump visited The National Museum of African American History and Culture in 2017, he had a different opinion about the discussion of slavery in the museum.
In his remarks that day he praised Bunch, the current secretary of the Smithsonian who was then the founding director of the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Trump referred to the museum as “incredible,” “done with love,” and a “truly great museum.”
He praised abolitionist figures Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass. He even recounted a story he’d learned about a runaway slave. He called the tour of the museum “a meaningful reminder of why we have to fight bigotry, intolerance and hatred in all of its very ugly forms.”

The White House review is said to be focused on eight museums, including The National Museum of African American History and Culture, The National Museum of American History, The National Museum of Natural History, The National Museum of the American Indian, The Smithsonian American Art Museum, The National Air and Space Museum, the National Portrait Gallery and The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.
Trump signed an executive order back in March directing Vice President JD Vance and Interior Department Secretary Doug Burgum to “remove improper ideology” from all areas of the Smithsonian.
Last week, ABC News visited the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History and National Museum of African American History and Culture, and took photographs of multiple exhibits displayed information and historical artifacts about slavery, segregation and the civil rights movement.

Trump Asked To Borrow Van Gogh Art For White House, Is Offered Gold Toilet Instead

President Donald Trump has wasted no time in redecorating the White House during his second term—filling it with flattering portraits of himself.
Since he assumed office this year for the second time, photographs and footage taken within 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue show how new paintings have been popping up on walls throughout the Washington, D.C., residence and offices. A new painting was unveiled this week by a White House insider, who appeared to promise there are “more to come.”
At least four new paintings of Trump, some of which depict him in heroic poses, have been spotted, alongside a framed photo of a newspaper’s front page of his mugshot, taken after he was indicted on racketeering and related charges in 2023.
Newsweek has reached out to the White House by email, seeking comment, further information about the artworks and the artists who created them, and whether there are plans for more paintings to be commissioned.

Why It Matters
Historically, every time a new president and his family have moved into the White House, attention soon focuses on how they choose to make the building their own.
While the media and political opponents are particularly interested in the cost—totting up how much cash is spent on décor—there is often also speculation about what the changes to the home’s style says about its new occupants.
For example, there were several reports about how former President Joe Biden redecorated after Trump’s first term; he put up a portrait of founding father Benjamin Franklin along with several family photos. Then, when Trump returned, he famously gilded the Oval Office with gold and replaced mantelpiece plants with golden objets d’art.
Back in 2017, it emerged that Trump’s first White House redecoration cost some $1.75 million—far exceeding the $100,000 stipend traditionally given to incoming first families to make their surroundings more comfortable.
What To Know
Trump is notoriously picky about his depiction in art. He hated a painting of himself by the artist Sarah A. Boardman that was hung in Colorado’s state Capitol, claiming it was “purposefully distorted.” The painting was later removed after his critique in March.
So it’s a safe bet that the Trump paintings now dotted around the White House have been personally approved by the president. It’s believed to be somewhat unusual for presidents to hang paintings of themselves at the White House during their time in office; a painting is usually commissioned to be hung after they’ve served their term.
Here are the new pieces of art spotted since Trump’s return to office this year, beginning with the most recent unveilings this week:
- On Monday (August 18), Trump’s assistant and communications advisor Margo Martin shared a short video clip from her account on social media platform X. It showed Trump posing for a photo with European leaders, who were visiting the White House for talks about Russia’s war on Ukraine.
As the group stood in a line, Trump can be seen directing their attention to a painting of him raising his fist in defiance as blood streaked down his face following the attempted assassination in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July 2024.
“That was not a great day!” he joked, but seemed happy to have that particular moment captured for posterity, with the large image taking up much of a wall.
Martin described the image as “his Butler ‘Fight, Fight, Fight’ painting,” which are the words Trump shouted out to the crowd at the time.
- Later that same day, Trump adviser Sebastian Gorka shared a snap of an imposing full-length painting of Trump striding forward, his coat flapping in the breeze as he marches down a path with American flags standing sentry either side of him. The background resembles flames or perhaps a sunrise with thick orange daubs of paint. Gorka claimed the painting was simply “one of the new White House paintings” and added: “More to come.”
- Back on May 22, New York Times White House correspondent Shawn McCreesh shared a photo of a “new piece of artwork hanging on the walls of the West Wing.” It showed Trump smiling enigmatically in the foreground, with former presidents Abraham Lincoln and Ronald Reagan standing behind him visible over his shoulders, with an American flag forming the background of the image.
- The previous month, on April 22, Florida Congressman Jimmy Patronis shared a photo of himself gazing at a new portrait of Trump that he said had been hung that day. It showed a black and white close-up of Trump’s face, with a colorful American flag superimposed over the image. The unframed picture was sandwiched between two framed portraits of former first ladies Laura Bush and Hillary Clinton.
