Our Hippie Home

In 1976, Gloria Ehlers and I lived at 70 Yosemite Avenue, off Piedmont Ave. We were here for several years. The house was a wreck. The plaster walls were all cracked. We bought burlap and Gloria ironed it before I glued it to the wall. We glued on stained wooden strips. The ceilings were coming down in two upstairs bedroom, so I screwed up quarter inch sheetrock. I made a studio for my friend. The empty canvas would become ‘Rosmarin’. We spent much time on Mount Tamalpais.

There was no counter space in the kitchen, except around the sink. I found three sawhorses in the basement, and two pieces of plywood. Guests were blown away. I invented the center island. Gloria hated it when I first put it together. Then I made a shelf and put up hooks to hangs pots. “Road Closed”. I hung a pail to catch the scraps that went on the compost. There was a cross I hung a ying-yang table top on. We put our guests in the sunroom. I loved our hammock and garden.

Our home was torn down to build a apartment complex.
