The Lost and The Dead

Detective Holstrum told me she could not find any of Drew Benton’s relatives. Nor could Bosley. Last night on the news I saw a vigil held on the McKenzie River, for the dead, and the missing. At one time there were six Dundon’s living on this river. I consider this an observance of Drew.

EUGENE, Ore. — Volunteers with the nonprofit Dylan’s Legacy have spent the past week along the McKenzie River searching for the remains of several missing people from Lane County.

The effort brings together families of the missing—like Shane Sprenger and Michael Bryson—men who’ve been missing for more than four years from the Dorena and Blue River area.

Dylan’s Legacy was founded by Candice Cooley after her son, Dylan, was murdered in Utah.

The nonprofit is aiming to fill the gaps left by underfunded and overburdened agencies and has raised thousands of dollars through fundraisers.

Dylan’s Legacy funds canine searches, drone mapping, and forensic evidence recovery.

“Everybody deserves to be found, and every parent deserves to have peace. There’s never closure, but there’s at least peace,” says Cooley. “We’ve just seen this need for us to band together as families, be able to raise funds to get more of these missions funded where we have lack of funding in law enforcement, search and rescue through the state level.”

The group is urging anyone near the McKenzie River to stay alert and to report anything suspicious that could help bring these families answers.
