Cities Were Set Ablaze When King Died

Belmont is having another poetry contest. I tried to enter my poem two last year. I was ruled OFF TOPIC – I think. Belmont cant burn down its culture fast enough. When they see a spark of genius, they call in men and women with blowtorches! I’m going to write a poem about the cities that got torched when Martin Luther King was assassinated. Wish me luck.

The Amazons of Yellowstone

The Amazon forest

burns hot tonight

my love.

Soon

there will be no oxygen

in the air

To breath, my love

my love of air

is no equal

to my memory of you

In the last

of everything

in the consuming sparks

that dance around the moon

I save my last breath

for you

For you

my last sigh

Submissions are now being accepted for our annual Martin Luther King Jr. Poetry and Essay Contest!

As we honor Dr. King’s profound legacy this month, it’s a great opportunity for students to reflect on Dr. King’s powerful words and the impact it’s had in their life or how they see the world. All Belmont students grades 3 -12 can participate by submitting an original piece of work by the February 3rd deadline. This year’s theme is “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is ‘what are you doing for others?’”

Finalists will be invited to attend the Awards Ceremony scheduled for Thursday, February 27th. All selected finalists and winners will win monetary gift cards donated by our generous sponsors!

Decoding Poetry 360 project logo

Crafted by Belmont Poet Laureate Monica Korde, the latest addition to this year’s “Project POETRY 360” initiatives is an interactive installation at the Belmont Library urging community members to share uplifting personal sentiments or messages directed towards the Earth and centered around the theme “Planet vs. Plastic.”

At the project’s conclusion, a collective poem will be crafted using all contributed words and messages. Drop by the Belmont Library throughout April 2024 to witness the development of this community endeavor and be a part of a poetic creation for National Poetry Month 2024.
