Donald Trump will nominate Fox News host and veteran Pete Hegseth to be Secretary of Defense, the latest in a flurry of announcements about the shape of the incoming administration.
“Pete has spent his entire life as a Warrior for the Troops, and for the Country. Pete is tough, smart and a true believer in America First,” the president-elect said in a statement on Tuesday. “With Pere at the helm, America’s enemies are on notice — Our Military will be Great Again, and America will Never Back Down.”
Hegseth, 44, is a former Bear Stearns banker who later served tours with the Army National Guard in Guantánamo Bay, Iraq, and Afghanistan, as well as led veterans-focused advocacy organizations. He joined Fox News as a contributor in 2014 and co-hosts “Fox & Friends.”

Donald Trump is considering establishing a “warrior board” to review senior officers in the US military and weed out “woke generals”, according to reports.
A draft executive order under consideration by the president-elect’s transition team would set up a board of retired senior officials to audit top brass that do not meet standards of “leadership capability, strategic readiness, and commitment to military excellence”.
The move is thought to be Mr Trump’s first step in tackling the issue of “woke generals”, which he complained about on the campaign trail, arguing that diversity and inclusion politics had become more important than war-fighting ability.

During his time at the network, Hegseth lobbied Trump to support U.S. soldiers and contractors accused of war crimes, including Navy SEAL Eddie Gallagher and a group of Blackwater personnel accused of massacring civilians in Baghdad.
On air, Hegseth has complained the U.S. is spending too much supporting Ukraine’s fight against Russia and has been an outspoken advocate for Israel. He’s suggested both Israel’s founding as a nation-state and the U.S. revolution against Great Britain represent “the story of God’s chosen people.”

WASHINGTON, Nov 13 (Reuters) – U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has picked as his secretary of defense Pete Hegseth, a Fox News commentator and veteran who has expressed disdain for so-called “woke” policies of Pentagon leaders, opposed women in combat roles, and even questioned whether the top American general was in his position because of his skin color.
If confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Hegseth could make good on Trump’s campaign promises to rid the U.S. military of generals who he accuses of pursuing progressive policies on diversity in the ranks that conservatives have rallied against.

It could also set up a collision course between Hegseth and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Air Force General C.Q. Brown, a former fighter pilot with command experience in the Pacific and the Middle East, who Hegseth accused of “pursuing the radical positions of left-wing politicians.”
Hegseth, who has little management experience, will be in charge of 1.3 million active-duty service members and the nearly 1 million civilians who work for the military.
The 44-year old NATO-skeptic is perhaps Trump’s most surprising pick as he fills out his cabinet ahead of the Jan. 20 inauguration, and the decision drew swift condemnation from some of Trump’s opponents.
“The job of Secretary of Defense should not be an entry-level position,” Representative Adam Smith, the top Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee, posted on X.
His selection also caused shock in the Pentagon, where officials privately questioned what qualified him for the positioTw
A senior Defense Department official speaking on condition of anonymity said Hegseth is not even qualified for a far less senior job.
Trump, announcing his decision on Tuesday, praised Hegseth, who is an Army National Guard veteran and, according to his website, served in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
“Pete is tough, smart and a true believer in America First,” Trump said in a statement. “With Pete at the helm, America’s enemies are on notice – Our Military will be Great Again, and America will Never Back Down.”
