“His desire was to help others find their “roots” in Belmont, just as he had. For his work Denny received the 2019 Community Service Award from the city.”
Before I came along Denny Lawhern saw himself as a Henry Louis Gates!
“To put down “roots” in another manner, Denny became the family genealogist and historian, compiling a massive family tree.”
At high noon on July 27, 2024, I John Presco found proof, Denny Lawhern oppressed my posts on the Belmont Historical Society, and, he wanted me to go away – AND DIE! But more than that – he wanted to UPROOT my family DNA from Belmont – even more than he had!
I did not hear from Lawhern because he was scouring my blog to find evidence I was not related to Carl Janke. Not once did he or Cynthia McCarthy comment on the photographs in the Stuttmeister-Janke crypt of me introducing my daughter and newborn grandson – TO THEIR ROOTS. Any genealogist would have been thrilled to help me with MY RESEARH of my family tree, accept the co-founder of the Belmont Historical Society. The really BIG QUESTION, is, Did Denny research Doris Vannier’s FAMILY TREE – and find me? The next BIG QUESTION, is, did Denny find my DNA Battle with Ian Sinclair? I think he did. Then, he looked at the star of his DNA,

“His desire was to help others find their “roots” in Belmont, just as he had. For his work Denny received the 2019 Community Service Award from the city….” He worked diligently in a volunteer capacity to collect, catalog, archive, digitize, meticulously organize and display the history of his beloved city, scouring old newspapers and estate sales for source material and artifacts. He uncovered a wealth of information on local history, became an oft-quoted resource, and spoke frequently to citizen groups, schools, scouting clubs, and senior care facilities around the area, using several 30-minute slide shows that he created. He would bring with him historical objects that he encouraged people to hold in their hands and “feel” the history, and he operated the museum with this interactivity goal as well. His desire was to help others find their “roots” in Belmont, just as he had. For his work Denny received the 2019 Community Service Award from the city.”
Denny did not help me find my “roots” in Belmont because my genetic material was dug up in the middle of the night AMD PUT IN ANOTHER CITY. My relatives, I was not told about, tried to get Denny to push for a plaque on the Bay tree that Carl Janke and his wife was buried under. Below is his bio that points to the fact he could have gotten a plaque placed – if he tried! Denny did not try – after he beheld the Janke-Stuttmeister crypt in Colma that contained the offspring of Carl Janke – WHO WERE DUG UP OUT OF THEIR GRAVES at the Oddfellows Cemetery in San Francisco. I did not know about the removal of Carl – yet! But, it was just a matter of time. Denny saw that I was a good genealogist – and investigative reporter for the my newspaper, Royal Rosamond Press, that I told the BHS I wanted to move to Belmont. Yikes!
I did not know Denny Lawherne would see this as a TOTAL USURPTION of his life’s work! It get’s worse. Denny realized I was the human being – he should have been! I was – what is missing in his life! All of a sudden – I WAS HIS WORST NIGHTMARE! I could take away his credit, and cast him in my shadow. He does all the work, and here I come, the Super Hated Hippie who lucked out when it came to genetics, and I’m surrounded by Super Talented People – even famous people! I’m a Glamor Boy Parasite, the grasshopper to his ant. Not once did he or Cynthia McCarthy, mention my sister Christine Rosamond, who was a world famous artist. THEIR JEALOUSY WAS OVER THE TOP! I have empathy!
For several days I have been looking at why my niece, Drew Benton, did not tell her boyfriend and his brother, who her parents were. I conclude Human Jealousy is to blame. I am destined to author a HUGE BOOK on this subject, and have got a good start with owning the LARGEST BLOG IN THE WORLD.
I was Christine’s Healer from a very early age. Something was wrong with her. Our parents and my brother – rejected her! To reveal this is very threatening because outside parasites want this truth, to make money – and destroy us at the same time! What people DIDNT GET caused them to destroy those who appear to own way too much of everything. Why did Lawhern destroy the Janke Family History, and the Janke Family?. He did not tell me Doris Vannier got the Mayor of Belmont to declare Carl Janke Day, that may have NOT been celebrated. Instead, it’s Denny Lawhern Day – every damn day!
Doris and Denny – are both dead! Why am I banned from the Belmont Historical Society Facebook? I am more than the Heir Apparent. Ten years ago I exchanged about eight e-mails with Zane Halpern whose co-author came across my name study of the Knights Templar. One name I studied ended up on a FAKE map on the Curse of Oak Island. The Curse of Belmont Park – is ripe for the History Channel.
There were five graves DUG UP. I suspect Denny founded the BHS in order to deal with these graves, that a group of politicians wanted out of Twin Pines Park in order to designate a City Park. I suspect this land went undeveloped because past politicians RESPRECTED THESE GRAVES. What if you parented to respect these graves – do you can remove them? Was this land – DEEDED TO THE DEAD? These are Belmont Pioneers that are denigrated, while praise if heaped upon Denny, who plants names of the living on rocks in the park, until one Mayor, dies. He got three plaques. Who dare – rip these plaques out of the park – and put them in Redwood City?
Denny founded a art gallery and had art at his house. He was feeling pretty good about himself until he saw the pics of me taken in Christine Rosamond’s art studio. I was going to be he first male portrait. Then Denny say my wedding pictures with my bride, Mary Ann Tharaldsen, who lived with Thomas Pynchon for two years. Mary Ann did a life-size portrait of her friend Mimi Farina who husband was the King of the Filthy Hippies. Remember them? Did they back Denny – financially – in his root search? Did they get to secretly choose who will replace Their Denny Boy as – KING HISTORIAN? I think Spooky Noodles is in the running for this title! I cut him off!
Do see how I was Denny Lawherns worst nightmare? I am Carl Janke risen from the dead. I am reminded of the Monsters of the Id in Forbidden Planet? How many want me to die, and this blog – erased? Belmont has NO HISTORY………at the moment?
“To put down “roots” in another manner, Denny became the family genealogist and historian, compiling a massive family tree. He did original research around the country, united two branches of his Lawhern tree that had lost each other a few generations ago, and even travelled to Britain to accomplish some research there. He traced his Lawhern line back to an orphan in London who was indentured to a sailing ship as a teenager, eventually putting down “roots” in Virginia before the year 1700.”
Lawhern and McCarthy had to find my post on finding the lost Janke-Stuttmeister crypt – with Tiffany widow. Was Doris still alive? Was Denny afraid of the power these two branches of Janke family would own? How about elected officials who go their names on rocks in the park? Who gives a rat’s ass about his English orphan ancestor? Why didn’t he do a massive genealogy of the Janke-Stuttmesiter family in order to earn – HIS TITLE? He had to have read about this wedding!

Does Belmont get a cut of the many weddings conducted at Ralston Hall? I wanted to go into the wedding business! I was a – SHOEIN! I wanted to put my newspaper in Belmont!
I will not rest until Lawhern is STRIPPED of this title….the 2019 Community Service Award. And why not this one…In 1997 he received The Belmont Chamber of Commerce William Chapman Ralston Award for his outstanding community service. I demand that plaque of living politicians be stripped pff that rock, because I suspect….COLLUSIAN! Show me – THE DEEDS!
I will be contacting Stanford University, because I suspect there are bodies burred all over the place. Their names! Their birthdays and their death dates were erased in a Ghoulish Land Grab! THE LIVING received The Lawherm Seal of Approval!
Then there was Denny’s rejection of the history of Kamala Harris – because it was not Belmont related. That’s not what the BHS Facbook page said. California History was welcome – too! Kamala and I were born in Oakland. If Carl was not born – I would not exist! Not so…..The Man Who Owned The Monopoly On Perfection!
“How the mighty and perfect have fallen!”

I drew my first family tree on July 3, 1960, when I was 9. I know the date because a day
Denny Lawhern will go down in history as a dastardly Usurper of the Dead. When he saw our beautful crypt in Colma that William Stuttmeister paid for to rebury our dead – with first class loving care – the crown slipped from his head. He even lost his title as Santa Claus de Belmont, the pretender who has the largest Find a Grave citation I have ever seen. Lawhern, took what did not belong to him, and as The Evil Santa gave it to others in return for favors. This is a Genealogical Usurpation that will go down in infamy!. I will be contacting Mr. Gates and ask him to go with me to Belmont and research my family history. Denny made it clear he does not want any BLACK ROOTS in his…..native soil!

Two days ago I came upon this episode while channel surfing – by fate! The Curse of Oakland reviewed its trip to Europe. I communicated with Zena Halpern. We had at least one phone call. I do not recall the year. She might have been a member of my Gmail group, Templar-de-Rosemont. She had some important information she wanted to show me, but wanted me to sign a NDA.

STUTTMEISTER-JANKE.
One of the most enjoyable weddings of the past week took place at
Belmont, Wednesday morning last, the contracting parties being Miss
Augusta Janke, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. August Janke of Belmont,
and Dr. Wm. Stuttmeister of San Francisco. The house was
handsomely decorated with a rich profusion of ferns and flowers, and
at the appointed hour was filled with the relatives and intimate friends
of the contracting parties. At 11 o’clock the wedding march was played
and the bridal party entered the parlor. The bride was attended by Miss
Alice Stuttmeister, a sister of the groom, and Miss Minnie Janke, a
sister of the bride, as bridesmaids, and Dr. Muldownado and Wm.
Janke, a cousin of the bride, were groomsmen. The Rev. A. L. Brewer
of San Mateo performed the beautiful and impressive ceremony under
an arch composed of flowers and greens very prettily arranged, after
which the guests pressed forward and offered their congratulations.
The bride was attired in a very pretty and becoming costume of the
crushed strawberry shade, and wore a corsage bouquet of orange
blossoms. She carried a handsome bouquet of white flowers. After the
guests had paid their compliments the bride and groom led the way to
the dining-room, where the wedding dinner was served and the health
of the newly married pair was pledged. The feast over, the guests
joined in the dance, and the hours sped right merrily, interspersed with
music singing and recitations, until the bride and groom took their
departure amid a shower of rice and good wishes. Many beautiful
presents were received. Dr. and Mrs. Stuttmeister left Thursday
morning for Santa Cruz and Monterey, where they will spend the
honeymoon. On their return they will make their home in Belmont.

In her book “Heritage of the Wooded Hills,” Ria Elena MacCrisken writes, “… if the railroad looked down its nose at the San Francisco picnickers, the little town of Belmont welcomed them with open arms. These early-day tourists brought lively times to Belmont and revenue to its stores…” Unfortunately for the Jankes , when the train stopped bringing carloads of revelers, much of Belmont Park’s clientele disappeared.
By 1910, the property had sold to George Center, the director of the Bank of California, who built a home on the property. Later Dr. Norbert Gottbrath opened a sanitarium called “Twin Pines,” which operated until March of 1972. The City of Belmont took over the property, dedicating Twin Pines Park in June of 1973.
I found Carl and Dorothea (also and Doretta) are buried at the Union Cemetary in Redwood City.

Densel Lynn Lawhern, known to all as Denny, was a man who turned a troubled childhood into the source of a deep inner strength for the benefit of others. He was a strong optimist who tried to look for the blessings in each day, and not pass up a chance to love others. His bright smile was infectious, and his heart was genuinely kind. His door was always opened to those who needed a place to stay, including foster children, international students, a younger sister and her family, his aged father, and many others who depended on him. One rarely meets a man so compassionate and giving of himself. He labored tirelessly for not just his family, but also for his community.
Denny was born in Los Angeles on April 12, 1940, just days after Nazi Germany invaded Denmark and Norway. His parents were “Pat” Lawhern and Abby Summers, who separated before he was born, so he grew up with various family members and partly under foster care. He moved around from Los Angeles to Henderson, Nevada, to San Bernardino, California, then to the Delhi/Turlock/Merced region, as well as to Palo Alto, and his frequent moves left him with a deep longing for “roots.” He would spend his lifetime dedicated to growing “roots” ever deeper for his family, and in his community.
In 1957, as a 17-year-old Junior in high school, Densel joined the US Air Force and served his country at George Air Force Base, Victorville, California, where he completed high school at night. Then he went on to be stationed in Anchorage, Alaska. He was in the regular Air Force for four years, and in the reserves for two. He was a patriot of his country all his life, and a strong supporter of our troops.
On November 10, 1962, Densel married Toni Lee Lowe in Turlock, California, where he was working as an auto mechanic for Farish-Herzog Pontiac. A few years later, they moved to Belmont, California, to raise their family. Both became active members of their community, soon buying a home. Denny started work as an auto technician at Superior Body Shop in San Carlos, retiring 58 years later as a Manager/Estimator. In support of his work there, he received an Associate of Arts degree in Automotive Technology/Management from College of San Mateo, in 1982.
Denny earned his Private Pilot’s license in the 1970’s, and enjoyed flying for many years, with his wife as his co-pilot. One of his avid hobbies was studying aviation history.
As Denny set down his “roots” in Belmont, he did it with all his might. He served 12 years on the Belmont Planning Commission, where he helped direct some of Belmont’s largest projects, including Island Park, San Juan Hill Plan, Western Hills Plan and the Downtown Plan. He was the President of the Sterling Downs Neighborhood Association, Vice-President of the Nesbit School PTA, a member of the Ralston and Harbor Grade Separation Task Force, the Emmett Store Preservation Committee, the Twin Pines Bond Committee, chairperson of the Historical Buildings Review Task Force, a member of the Belmont School Facilities Committee, and of the Heritage Tree Committee. He also was a Boy Scout leader and volunteered with the YMCA and the Red Cross. For twenty years he served as Santa Claus for the fire department. In 1997 he received The Belmont Chamber of Commerce William Chapman Ralston Award for his outstanding community service.
In 1987 Denny was a founding member of the Belmont Historical Society. For 37 years Denny served as the City Historian and for 14 years was President of the Board of Directors. He was Curator of the Belmont History Room at The Manor House, 10 Twin Pines Lane. The society has helped to establish many of the city’s buildings as historical landmarks. He worked diligently in a volunteer capacity to collect, catalog, archive, digitize, meticulously organize and display the history of his beloved city, scouring old newspapers and estate sales for source material and artifacts. For his work Denny received the 2019 Community Service Award from the city.
To put down “roots” in another manner, Denny became the family genealogist and historian, compiling a massive family tree. He did original research around the country, united two branches of his Lawhern tree that had lost each other a few generations ago, and even travelled to Britain to accomplish some research there. He traced his Lawhern line back to an orphan in London who was indentured to a sailing ship as a teenager, eventually putting down “roots” in Virginia before the year 1700.
In his free time, Denny extensively travelled the backroads of California and the West Coast to take nature hikes, photograph the area, and visit small museums. One of his favorite places to visit was Yosemite, where he took many stunning photographs over the years. He owned an RV and travelled the USA in the company of his sister Abbie after the untimely death of his wife. One long driving trip was to Alaska, and two times they travelled all the way around the US, visiting distant cousins, family history sites, and most of our National Parks.
On these trips, Denny developed his skills as an outstanding photographer. A show of his wildlife photography from Alaska was mounted in August, 2009, by the Belmont Arts Council at Twin Pines Park. If was named “Denny Gone Wild.”
Denny lovingly cared for his home in Belmont for 55 years. In recent years he worked diligently to make it energy efficient, and carefully renovated and cultivated his yards to make them an oasis for his family’s enjoyment. Throughout his life he loved using his home for family reunions and gatherings, and one of his greatest joys was to have as many family members at his extended dining table as possible. He even created a special art room for younger members of the family to come play in.
Denny was a survivor against many medical hardships, including a heart attack and surgery, kidney cancer and skin cancer. He worked hard in his later years to constantly improve his diet and exercise. However, time took its toll, and Denny passed away at his home on March 8, 2022, after a life well-lived. He was interred at Skylawn Cemetery, Half-Moon Bay, alongside the ashes of Toni, his beloved and painfully missed wife of 43 years, who preceded him in death in 2006.
Densel Lawhern was also preceded in death by brothers Ernest, Dow, and Arthur Lawhern, Don Creamer and Paul Smith, and their wives. He is survived by his brother Richard (Maren) Lawhern and his daughter Helene (Paul) Kocher; sister Glenda (David) Laird and their daughter Michelle (Ryan) Dudley; sister Abbie (Richard Vaught) Hull and her son Matt (Veronica) Hull, and their daughter Melissa Vaught; daughter Toni Lynn (Michael) Charlesworth; foster son Dwight (Valerie) Pedersen and their daughter Madison; and son Jason Lawhern, as well as his Lawhern cousins. Particularly close to Denny were Abbie’s children Melissa and Matt, and his daughters Camila and Viviana, who Denny considered his grandchildren, along with Dwight’s daughter Madison. His niece Helene and her children Sophie and Eric were also very close. Denny was Uncle to 17 nieces and nephews, and their many children and grandchildren. He will be sorely missed and long remembered by his family, and the thousands of volunteers and citizens of the city of Belmont that he interacted with and faithfully served.

Meet Snitty Cynthia who descends from the Golam Family of Belmont. Meet the Head Golam and Orc Historian – Denny Lawhern! There’s another parasite out there who called me a “displaced person” after mentioning my family photographs/ These people are feeding off my DNA, and hiding my DNA material, in what amounts to the strangest search for one roots in the history of Root searching. It is epic. It is worth – A BOOK! Anyone who hinders MY BOOK – is going to meet my attorney on the way to Modor! To discover Denny Lawhern is a Devout Genealogist, and Patron of the Arts, is truly terrifying! He lurked in the background while Cynthia did all she could – to get rid of me. She knew Denny is into HIS family tree – BIG TIME! Is Denny’s Root planted in the archives of the Belmont History Society? These two creature knew The Founders of Belmont were dug out of their graves in the middle of the night – and put in another grave near an ugly freeway. This is why they tried to get rid of me. If I found out, I would bring my roots – DOWN UPON THEIR HEAD!
THIS IS LIKE MURDER! To get rid of the DNA of a person, for profit, and because one is jealous, is convicting enough, but to go to great lengths to use the “City of Belmont” name to bully me, after enticing me to share – IS PURE EVIL! What does that box above my head say?
“CONTACT US”
What is that symbol? Is that two links of a chain? Could that be the links of ones
DNA
Did Denny use any monies the city gave him, or paid him to go to foreign lands in search of his DNA connections. The City of Belmont is also ignoring me. How many Historical Societies did Denny contact in order to have – HIS HISTORY LOOK GOOD?
Below is a video of my childhood friend, Nancy Hamren Nee’ Van Brasch. We went to McChesney Junior High in Oakland. One day Melba Charlotte Wilkins Nee’ Broderick walked into Bobby Jensen’s art class to talk about my disturbing work of art I did when I was twelve. Melba’s mother is Alice Stuttmeister. She raised the Jensen brothers, one who became a famous athlete, Jackie Jensen. Here is my post on the Facebook of the Mayor of Belmont. My posts are being taken down. I am tracing my Janke-Stuttmeister Roots to Oakland where a black woman just became Vice President. Her history is being rejected by Cynthia McCarthy and Denny Lawhern.
I have made no agreement with anyone to publish or broadcast any of my family history. What is the true motive of these parasites? When in doubt….”follow the money trail”. Below is an ad for a book signing. Does Denny get a percentage of sales? At the bottom of THE AD are these words..

Three Flags – One Grave
Posted on May 27, 2023 by Royal Rosamond Press

It is 8:33 A.M. May 27, 2023 – and I am still in shock having discovered my grandparents are buried in the same grave! I saw TWO flags put on one gravestone. That was a half hour ago. THEN – I see another flag! There are three of my ancestors buried in the same grave! WHY? Did the caretakers conclude this was a very poor family? William Stuttmeister knew they were Belmont before he died. At great expense to himself, he moved the Jankes to Colma after they were evicted from the Odd Fellow cemetery – at great expense! This was a wealthy pioneer family whose graves keep being defiled! They were moved to the Union cemetery i 1972?
Below is a video I made after I met with LDS Sisters who wanted to meet at the genealogy center to look at these illustrious people who have a magnificent crypt in Berlin. I don’t know if I told them I was considering putting Amanda Gorman in my painting of the two pages saving our electoral votes.

Lead Belly, uses the phrase near the end of the recording of his 1938 song “Scottsboro Boys”, which tells the story of nine black teenagers accused of raping two white women, saying: “I advise everybody, be a little careful when they go along through there – best stay woke, keep their eyes open.”[8][9] Aja Romano writes at Vox that this represents “Black Americans’ need to be aware of racially motivated threats and the potential dangers of white America”.[4] J. Saunders Redding recorded a comment from an African American United Mine Workers official in 1940, stating: “Let me tell you buddy. Waking up is a damn sight harder than going to sleep, but we’ll stay woke up longer.”[10]

Meet Snitty Cynthia Karpa McCarthy

Here she is, the devil who played evil mind games with me – and dead members of my family!. She wrote a book on the City of Belmont – and did not tell me for three days. We were having a squabble over how the facebook for the Belmont Historical Society is set up. My first posts identified me as a close relative of Carl Janke. Did Snitty Miss Cynthia – jump for joy and say;
“Oh by God! I thought you were all dead. I wrote a book on your family. Have you read my book? Do you have more family photos – and history?
One of the first posts I posted was on Cipriani found La California in Italy. did she jump for joy at this news. Did she tell me this was fantastic research. This is a ex-librarian. Don’t they take a oath to respect writers of books, and the history of people – written by relatives. What gets me, she did not approve the Tiffany window in the Janke-Stuttmeister crypt with the name of Augustus Janke on it. Why would she withhold this beautiful historic image from the people of Belmont. I suspect she is a parasite and a thief who stayed up all night pouring through the blog – that she said she did not know existed1 Outrageous. I spoke about the deaths in the family and the books and movie scripts about my famous sister. Is she gong for another Rosemond Book? You think she would have said
“Your sister is Rosamond? Oh my God, I had some of her work. And her grandfather is Carl Janke? Oh my God. Lets co-author a book together!”
But, what got me, is, she took down this photo of the Janke-Stuttmeister crypt after I told her this is where my grandfather moved OUR DEAD after they were dug up from their not final resting place, the Oddfellow cemetery.
As fate would have it, I posted my video of Chuck Kesey on his brothers mural, on Davina Hurt page. Snitty Catherine falsely claimed in her history book, the Grateful Dead lived, or, practiced their music in Ralston Hall. I have been on the bus with Kesey. I believe I posted on Nancy Hamren who worked at the Kesey Creamery and made a famous a yogurt. I will be letting The Dead Family – found all over the world – know that I came upon a trap-door spider that FEEDS OFF THE DEAD. My grandparents knew Joaquin Miller, who was promoted by Ida Culbreth, the head of the Oakland Library. This is a CONSPIRACY! Snitty said she is the only one to blame. How many read my posts, and knew I was handing them a gold mine? Did they should a warning. Did thy say;
“You need to talk to Cynthia Karpa McCarthy! You two have alot in common!”
No we don’t.
Here is the Satan-Cherry atop the who stinking History Theft. I posted on the Tanforan Cottages and my theory Cipriani bought one of Janke’s homes he brought around the Cape in 1849. I said this;
“Someone needs to look at these houses to see if they are screwed together.”
I belive I posted on the dumb claim Ciriani tore down a house in Italy and had it shipped to Belmont. Miss Snitty stole that idea from aother alleged historian, Dd Snitty say;
“Wow! Fantastic theory! Can you come here! Well ut you up in a fine hotel. We can get the city to lend us some construction workers!”
“We will review the content for its interest to our followers.”
How many others shared with THE REVIEWERS and got the same treatment – and walked away? I told Cynthia to let me post away, and if THE REVIWERS don’t like it, tell me, and I will take it down. How many visitors to this group – that give a rat’s ass. I will lodge a complaint with facebook.

Greg Presco Hi Greg , I have been enjoyed some of your posts and photos that are directly related to the Belmont area and you have provided some new photos and information that will be put in a file, but please try not to post anything that is off topic or is not Belmont Area related. Thank you ,Denny Lawhern Belmont Historian
“My name is Cynthia McCarthy and you can blame me and me alone, not the Belmont Historical Society. You can email me at carthy@gmail.com.

“The Belmont Historical Society Facebook page features posts and information pertaining to Belmont, San Mateo County, California and its history. Everyone is encouraged to send us messages. We will review the content for its interest to our followers.”
Here is Cynthia guarding her small town from an outsider whose family made most of Belmont’s history. It boggles the mind! Surely progressive investors are grateful for the warning. I live in Sprigfield Oregon that has been called Springtucky. How about Belabama?
“We are related to historic people somewhere.

William Stuttmeister moved his Janke kin to Colma after the outrage of their graves being opened and evicted. I am going to bring a lawsuit against Belmont if my posts are not restored. This is very traumatic! An outrage made fresh by a jealous ingrate who complained about volunteering. I’ll run your page – all by myself!
I am third generation Oakland where Kamala was born. This morning I spent four hours posting my family history of Carl Janke, a Belmont Pioneer, and all my posts were taken down. There was confusion why my posts were not shown last night. I hope no one is playing boyscout with this very important history. I worked with the Upstairs Art Association, and Oakland Redevelopment, something I read you are interested in. Too many townfolk want to create what they read in the Sally, Dick, and Jane books thinking this is the kind of history they deserve. One of my grandfather’s is associated with Sleepy Hollow and is in Hawthorne’s ‘The Scarlet Letter’. https://rosamondpress.com/…/janke-and-turner-vigilantes/

Christine Rosamond – Wikipedia
Rosamond Publishing – About the Artist
Midway between San Francisco and San José, Belmont is where an Italian count reconstructed his villa transported from Italy, where a silver king created “the White House of the West,” and where the Warlocks, a fledgling 1960s rock band, honed the sound they would make famous under another name, the Grateful Dead. Spanish explorers called Belmont’s vales “la Cañada del Diablo,” or “the Devil’s Canyon,” either after the locally famous winds or because the native Ohlone believed the canyon to be inhabited by spirits. Belmont’s historic advantage of being on the bay side of the shortest route to the Pacific coast meant easier access to another type of spirits during Prohibition, fueling a minor red-light district across the tracks on Old County Road. A century or more ago, Belmont’s wooded hills attracted sanitariums and prep schools. Today, its woods and trails draw residents from more developed neighboring towns.
Cynthia Karpa McCarthy, a former newspaper reporter and editor, is a librarian in San Mateo County. A California native, she enjoys reading and researching California history, particularly about Leonetto Cipriani, a Corsican who briefly lived in Belmont, California.
played in–possibly both of them.
Fireside Lounge, 2322 El Camino Real, San Mateo (August 1965)
The Fireside Lounge was run more on the Las Vegas model, if without the gambling. There was dinner and drinks to go with the dancing, sometimes a floor show, or topless dancers late at night. The object for a band was to keep people dancing so that they would buy drinks. I have written about the Fireside Lounge elsewhere, albeit with respect to another band.
According to McNally and Jackson in The Illustrated Trip, The Warlocks played one or a few gigs at The Fireside Lounge in August of 1965. It was probably a sort of “audition” gig, but the band didn’t return there, to my knowledge.

The In Room, El Camino Real, Belmont (mid-September to late October 1965)
The In Room was a popular nightclub in Belmont, although I have not yet been able to identify the exact location (on the map, I located it El Camino Real and Ralston Avenue, a principal intersection the business strip, and The In Room was certainly near there). McNally describes it as
a heavy hitting divorcee’s pick-up joint, the sort of swinging bar where real-estate salesmen chased stewardesses and single women got plenty of free drinks. Dark, with red and black as the color scheme, it was the kind of place that sold almost nothing but hard liquor (p.88)
The Warlocks were booked at the In Room for six weeks, from mid-September until late October of 1965. They played five 50-minute sets a night, five nights a week. 150 sets later, The Warlocks were a real band. The first week they had backed The Coasters for a set each night, but for the balance of the run they covered the gig themselves. They would start out playing almost straight-up, but as they got higher and the night got looser, their playing got more “barbaric.” Oddly enough, they started to build their own audience of nascent freaks, who would show up for the later sets, distinctly different than the hard-drinking pick up crowd. One night, for example, a band of Tacoma transplants called The Frantics ended up hanging out there, which is how Moby Grape guitarist Jerry Miller and Jerry Garcia first met.
The In Room was in Belmont, half way between Palo Alto and San Francisco. The Warlocks had played a little further up the El Camino (The Fireside and Big Al’s), but the In Room stood for a mid-point. The Warlocks were a real band making real money (if not a lot), but they were still doing their own thing and finding their own audience, so they were half way there.
| An ad for the In-Room at The Chalet, a hotel at 635 Old County Road in Belmont. This ad was from the Friday, February 12, 1966 edition of the San Mateo Times |
Update: Fellow scholar Dave Sorochty tracked down a contemporary ad for The In-Room, in the San Mateo Times (from February 12, 1966). The hotel was called The Chalet (see the picture above), and the lounge was called the In-Room. The actual address was 635 Old County Road. Note in the ad that the host is Rich Romanello; about a year later, Romanello was running a nearby club called Winchester Cathedral, and he promoted the initial incarnation of the groundbreaking Sly And The Family Stone.
[There is some general talk that The Warlocks played some High School dances in the South Bay in Fall 1965. It is possible, but its important to remember that in the 60s and 70s everybody in the South Bay had a Grateful Dead/Jerry Garcia story, and most of them were wishful thinking. Every High School had a story about how the Dead played there back in the day, or Jerry Garcia went there, and they can’t all of been true. Supposedly the Warlocks played Palo Alto High School on September 19, 1965, but it has been impossible to confirm this]
Pierre’s, Broadway at Columbus, San Francisco (early November 1965)
At some point, The Warlocks made Phil Lesh’s former roommate, Hank Harrison, into their manager. Harrison did very little for the group in his brief tenure. One gig he did get them was playing at a topless joint on North Beach called Pierre’s. Pierre’s, on the corner of Broadway in Columbus, the same corner as City Lights Bookstore, had been a popular Latin Jazz nightspot in the early 1960s. As topless joints took over Broadway, Pierre’s went topless as well, but the club was fading.
Cynthia Karpa McCarthy played an evil game with me and my dead. She kept removing posts, but, never told me she wrote a book on Belmont with photos of members of my family. She, and another kept threatening to take down my posts, knowing how valuable they are – especially my family photographs. This constitute Conspiracy. All evidence I exist, or posted on a site guided by the City of Belmont, is being erased. My posts on the City Managers office, are being taken down. Thank God I posted my information here – in duplicate! I also made copies of our exchange. I told Cynthia I posted here. I believe there is a Coverup! My full name is John Gregory Presco. When I reportedon the anarchist of Eugene Oregon they went after me. They filed a false abuse report. I got deaht threats. THIS is worse -by far! This FEIND has no love, or RESPECT, for my ancestors. She feeds off them. They pay her rent and buy her a new car. https://rosamondpress.com/…/meet-snitty-cynthia-karpa…/

- Greg PrescoBelmont appears to be seen as a conservative stronghold? If true – why! The area to Santa Cruz and Big Sur has been a Mecca for Bohemian types who created a ten billion dollar a year alternative economic reality – that everyone can use due to the coronavirus. Established restaurants are closing for good. How come a group of conservatives did not save the Cliff House? You need someone like me who is not afraid to ask the hard questions. Perhaps the solutions are real easy? http://hilltromper.com/…/la-honda-creek-open-space…
