I Want To Live At The Iron Gate

For fours years I have been looking for a place to live in Belmont on Zillow. Eureka! I was reading posts on the Belmont Historical Society, and they said Cottonseed Clark lived above the Iron Gate. I have my doubts, and will investigate.

I had to get free of Spooky Noodles, my sidekick, because he turned into The Lawnmower Man on me. He inherited his father’s photographic memory and became irate when I questioned him about his recital of the Janke History. He began screeching – and hung up on me. I tried to tell him I can’t store as much information as he, and thus wanted a short rewind on some of it! It was like – he was in my mind, and he owned all my information, and family history – because he has total recall. He thought I was questioning whether this was true, which made me suspicious. He had – become me! We have talked about doing a radio show – for years! I bought a microphone in preparation for us doing a podcast. I told Spooky if he does his Lawnmower shit to me on the air, I will cut his mike.

There’ something fishy going on. I tried to get a photo of Cottonseed of the internet – and got a 404 Error about five times. This makes me wonder if someone is writing a book about him, and, has planted him on other Historical Societies. I’m going with what the BHS says.

I don’t feel safe where I am. I am going to demand the City of Belmont pay for my room above the Iron Gate where I will do a podcast – till the day I die! Every month I will have The Haranguer’s Hour where I emerge on to the balcony overlooking the parking lot and harangue my haters – my deplorable listeners. I will be wearing a fat suit. I will describe the fattening French food I eat all day, and everyday, it sent up to me because I am too obese to get down the stairs.

“Let them eat cake! You go eat some cake – fool!”

I will introduce Spooky as….”Belmont’s own Lawnmower Man – even if he never lived here. But, thanks to virtual reality, he can, and will………LIVE INSIDE YOUR HEAD! I will pretend to interview Dead Cowboy Singers at the bar. The Western Shining Hour! Are we looking at the root of……

The Cottonseed Virus?

“We will – pick your mind!”

Cottonwood is introduced as a ‘Belmont Celebrity’. There is no mention of Christine Rosamond. How about…The Invasion of The Country Western Bodysnatchers?

I tried to post my family history on the BHS facebook and encountered a very rude Cynthia McCarthy who wrote a book on Belmont and failed to tell me this. She did not greet me warmly, and mentioned a copyright. I descend from Carl Janke, one of the founders of Belmont. My posts were taken down. Cynthia said she was to blame, and gave me her e-mail. I didn’t trust her and posted on Davina Hurt’s facebook.  Here is my blog.

Clark Fulks, a retired disc jockey who wrote for radio and television, has died at a Thousand Oaks hospital. He was 82.

Fulks, who moved to Thousand Oaks from Van Nuys six months ago, died of complications of a brain hemorrhage, said his wife, Mozelle Fulks.

Born in Paris, Tex., Fulks was a radio producer in New York before coming to California in the early 1940s. Fulks, who also used the name Cottonseed Clark, was master of ceremonies and writer for a weekly CBS radio show called “Cottonseed Clark’s Hollywood Barn Dance” and later wrote radio skits for Gene Autry and the Andrews Sisters.

In 1952, he moved to Northern California to be a disc jockey at KEEN-AM in San Jose. Fulks also created, produced and wrote for the “California Hay Ride” television show in San Francisco during the 1950s.

He retired from radio in 1985 and moved to Van Nuys.

In addition to his wife of 61 years, Fulks is survived by a daughter, Jane Hilton of Westlake Village; a sister, Eva Jim Smith of Oklahoma City, Okla.; four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Private services have been held. Pierce Brothers Griffin Mortuary in Thousand Oaks handled the arrangements.

California Hayride
Richmond, CA
Year Started:  1956
California HayrideCalifornia Hayride Program CoverThe California Hayride appears to be a program that appeared after the demise of the similar Hoffman Hayride program. Cottonseed Clark and Eddie Kirk were the hosts of the second version of the Hoffman Hayride with the original version being hosted by the popular Dude Martin. The show was to be the first live broadcast of a show over televsion station KOVR. The KOVR trucks went to the San Mateo Fiesta Grounds to setup for the broadcast back in October of 1955. The initial program was to be two hours at 8pm on Saturday nights. The show’s premier included quite a roster of talent – Stuart Hamblen, The Maddox Brothers and Rose and Rosie and Retta. Regular cast members were to appear as well – a youngster by name of Marilyn Orlando, another young lad – Johnny Guess, Arvada Miller, and Eddie Kirk. Dusty Dale and his band were to provide the musical backup for the show. The show seemed to also try to showcase new talent in the Bay Area. The first show was to include a group called the Kandy Sisters of San Francisco. Rocky Arnold, a country pianist was to also be on the first show. The show continued to be popular. Both Cottonseed and Eddie had their own disc jockey shows over radio station KEEN out of San Jose.In early January 1956, a newspaper article reported that famed Grand Ole Opry stars George Morgan, Cowboy Copas and Marty Robbins were slated to appear on the show.California Hayride - 1956 adThe two hour show was also followed by a five hour dance afterwards, so fans attending in person were sure to be entertained.Credits & SourcesSan Mateo Times; October 15, 1955; San Mateo, CAThe Daily News; January 7, 1956Jess WillardBlack Jack WayneEddie KirkHank CochranBill RingJohnny GuessCottonseed ClarkMarilyn OrlandoJerri JonesLee RossPete Harrison and the Sun Valley BoysHarold SouzaLittle Mike CalkinsGlenn Stepp and His Western SwingstersPatti PrichardCal Smith

A deep dive into the history of ‘The Lawnmower Man’

March 24, 2022

byIan Failes

The film just turned 30! So I talked to director Brett Leonard.

When Brett Leonard made The Lawnmower Man, released in 1992, he was adamant it was a cautionary tale about the advent of new immersive technologies and human interaction. Jump to 2022, and it turns out those concerns remain an issue in VR and beyond. Here, I sat down with the director for Vertex 2022 for a look back at 30 years since the release of Lawnmower Man, including discussion of the nascent computer graphics tools and techniques developed for the stunning imagery in the film.

A quick background on the director: Brett Leonard is a filmmaker/futurist, widely recognized as a top thought-leader in virtual reality since introducing the concept and term to popular culture in his hit film ‘The Lawnmower Man’. He also directed such other projects as ‘Virtuosity’, ’T-Rex: Back To The Cretaceous in IMAX 3D’, and Peter Gabriel’s ‘Kiss That Frog’ music video. He is currently working on other immersive projects, including the hybrid feature film/360VR ‘Hollywood Rooftop’.

Hell’s Kitchen Radio Show

Posted on October 30, 2020 by Royal Rosamond Press

For a couple of years my friend, Casey Farrell, and I have been talking about doing a radio show. Every time we converse we end up doing an hour long radio show – that is out of this world. No one talks about what we talk about. What about hardboiled broadcast from Hell’s Kitchen that will try to get to the nitty gritty about everything? Is the world coming to an end. Does COVID-19 have a Black Mary?
