The fate of the newborns at Shifa Hospital had captured global attention after the release of images showing doctors trying to keep them warm. A power blackout had shut down incubators and other equipment, and food, water and medical supplies ran out as Israeli forces battled Palestinian militants outside the hospital.

JERUSALEM, Nov 19 (Reuters) – The heads of the Christian Churches in Jerusalem issued a rare joint appeal at the weekend, warning that a contested land deal could erase the centuries-old presence of the Armenian community within the Old City.
The ethnic Armenian community has its own district within the ancient city of Jerusalem under borders drawn by Ottoman rulers – the smallest of the four quarters, which also include highly distinct Muslim, Jewish and Christian neighbourhoods.

However Armenians say they risk being uprooted by a deal to lease about 25% of their area to developers who want to build a luxury hotel on the site.
The deal was signed by the head of the Armenian Church in Jerusalem in July 2021, but members of his community said the first they heard of it was when surveyors started work in the area this year.
He has told his congregation that he was misled and has started legal action to get the contract annulled. The priest who brokered the accord on his behalf was defrocked by the Church Synod in May and he has left Jerusalem.
Despite the legal challenge, bulldozers arrived last week and started tearing up a carpark, which covers some of the contested land. When protesters blocked the work, armed Israeli Jewish settlers turned up in a failed effort to disperse the demonstration.
“The provocations that are being used by the alleged developers to deploy incendiary tactics threaten to erase the Armenian presence in the area, weakening and endangering the Christian presence in the Holy Land,” the Christian leaders wrote, including the heads of the Greek Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches.

The Armenian community says the investor behind the land lease deal is an Australian-Israeli businessman Danny Rubinstein, who owns a company registered in the United Arab Emirates – Xana Capital Group. A company sign was posted in the parking lot shortly after the surveyors turned up.
Rubinstein did not respond to a request for a comment about the project sent via his Linked-In account.

By tradition, Armenia was the first kingdom to convert to Christianity as a state religion in 301, and although its Church is much smaller than the Greek Orthodox and Catholic Churches, it has parity of rights at Jerusalem’s Holy Christian sites.
At the heart of their Quarter lies the ornately decorated St. James’s Cathedral, which dates to 420 A.D., strung with precious lamps and often infused with the haunting singing of its black-cowled monks.
The Quarter covers a sixth of walled Jerusalem and houses just 1,000 people, a fraction of the Old City’s 35,000-strong population.
Armenian locals say the land lease project would consume not just their carpark, the largest open space in the Old City, but also their community hall, the patriarch’s garden, the seminary and five family houses.
“The Armenians have been here since the 4th Century, but we now risk being uprooted,” said Hagop Djernazian, 23, a student, who is part of a group guarding the carpark night and day, with barbed wire strung out to try to keep out developers and settlers. “We are having to fight for our existence,” he said.
Daniel Seidemann, an activist Israeli lawyer who closely monitors the spread of Jewish settlers around Jerusalem, said the project was aimed at expanding the footprint of the Jewish Quarter across half the Old City.
Israel captured East Jerusalem, including the Old City, from Jordanian forces in a 1967 war. Israel regards the entire city as its eternal and undivided capital. Palestinians want East Jerusalem as the capital of a future state.
“We are aware of a plan to encircle the outside the Old City with settlement projects. We suspect this Armenia Quarter deal is meant to be a continuation of this plan inside the city walls,” Seidemann told Reuters.
“However, there is so much irregularity surrounding it that there is a good chance the courts will reject it.”

Born of Armenian parents on April 14, 1911, in Kütahya, Western Anatolia, Ottoman Empire, Zorthian escaped through Europe with the remnants of his family to escape the Armenian Genocide, and arrived in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1923. He earned a Master of Fine Arts at Yale University (where he had a “full college scholarship to the Yale School of fine arts”)[1] and studied art in Italy in the 1930s. Returning to the United States during the Great Depression, he painted several massive murals, including 11 for the Tennessee State Capitol in 1938 which earned him the honorary title of “Colonel“. In 1940, he painted the mural at the United States Post Office in St. Johnsville, New York, titled “Early St. Johnsville Pioneers.”[2]
World War II[edit]
During World War II, he served stateside in army intelligence and painted what he came to consider his masterpiece—a mural he titled The Phantasmagoria of Military Intelligence Training. His training at Camp Ritchie makes him one of many Ritchie Boys. His first marriage, to shaving cream heiress Betty Williams, ended in divorce but he gained the first acres of the Altadena ranch where he lived from 1945 until his death.

Armenian genocide
The Armenian genocide[a] was the systematic destruction of the Armenian people and identity in the Ottoman Empire during World War I. Spearheaded by the ruling Committee of Union and Progress (CUP), it was implemented primarily through the mass murder of around one million Armenians during death marches to the Syrian Desert and the forced Islamization of others, primarily women and children.
Before World War I, Armenians occupied a somewhat protected, but subordinate, place in Ottoman society. Large-scale massacres of Armenians had occurred in the 1890s and 1909. The Ottoman Empire suffered a series of military defeats and territorial losses—especially during the 1912–1913 Balkan Wars—leading to fear among CUP leaders that the Armenians would seek independence. During their invasion of Russian and Persian territory in 1914, Ottoman paramilitaries massacred local Armenians. Ottoman leaders took isolated instances of Armenian resistance as evidence of a widespread rebellion, though no such rebellion existed. Mass deportation was intended to permanently forestall the possibility of Armenian autonomy or independence.
On 24 April 1915, the Ottoman authorities arrested and deported hundreds of Armenian intellectuals and leaders from Constantinople. At the orders of Talaat Pasha, an estimated 800,000 to 1.2 million Armenians were sent on death marches to the Syrian Desert in 1915 and 1916. Driven forward by paramilitary escorts, the deportees were deprived of food and water and subjected to robbery, rape, and massacres. In the Syrian Desert, the survivors were dispersed into concentration camps. In 1916, another wave of massacres was ordered, leaving about 200,000 deportees alive by the end of the year. Around 100,000 to 200,000 Armenian women and children were forcibly converted to Islam and integrated into Muslim households. Massacres and ethnic cleansing of Armenian survivors continued through the Turkish War of Independence after World War I, carried out by Turkish nationalists.
This genocide put an end to more than two thousand years of Armenian civilization in eastern Anatolia. Together with the mass murder and expulsion of Assyrian/Syriac and Greek Orthodox Christians, it enabled the creation of an ethnonationalist Turkish state, the Republic of Turkey. The Turkish government maintains that the deportation of Armenians was a legitimate action that cannot be described as genocide. As of 2023, 34 countries have recognized the events as genocide, concurring with the academic consensus.

Zorthian fled the Armenian Geneocide, and died a General of the Armninian Army in exile. He was titled ‘The Last Bohemian’. In 1965 I attended a party at the Zorthian Ranch with my childhood friend, Nancy Hamren (whose grandmother owned the recipe for Nancy’s Yogurt) and Barry and Seyburn Zorthian, the daughter’s of the artist, Jirayr H. Zorthian, who was influenced by Thomas Hart Benton. Thomas is the cousin of the muralist, Garth Benton who married my late sister, the world famous artist, Christine Rosamond Benton. These four women and myself would live in a commune in San Fancisco, our rent paid by Betty Zorthian, the heiress of the William’s Shave fortune. Seyburn is an artist.

Schiff has been a leading voice in Armenian-American issues; he claims to have over 70,000 Armenian-Americans in his district.[40][41] He introduced U.S. House Resolution 106, recognizing the Armenian genocide, which the House Foreign Affairs Committee approved on October 11, 2007,[42] but began to lose support after Turkey’s prime minister said that approval of the resolution would endanger U.S.–Turkey relations.[43] On March 4, 2010, the House Foreign Affairs Committee again approved the resolution by a 23–22 margin.[44] Immediately, the Turkish government recalled its U.S. ambassador.[44] Schiff said in 2007, “When you think about what we have against us – the president, a foreign policy establishment that has condoned this campaign of denial, the Turkish lobby – against that you have the truth, which is a powerful thing but doesn’t always win out”.[45] On October 29, 2019, the full House of Representatives passed the resolution by a vote of 405–11.[46]
Days before Israel launched its ground invasion of Gaza, it was closing in on a deal for Hamas to release up to 50 hostages in exchange for pausing the bombardment unleashed in response to the militants’ Oct. 7 attacks in Israel, according to Arab and Western officials with knowledge of the talks.

But once Israel’s ground assault on Gaza got underway on Oct. 27, the negotiations came to an abrupt halt, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive negotiations. The talks resumed days later and are still underway.
Israel had delayed its ground attack to give some time for the hostage negotiations to be completed, according to two of the officials. But as the talks stalled, it decided to go forward, reckoning that Hamas, the armed Palestinian group that rules Gaza, would bow to military pressure.
The New York Times on Nov. 3 published an article written by Israeli President Isaac Herzog titled “The President of Israel: This Is Not a Battle Just Between Israel and Hamas.” The article is actually the official opinion of the Israeli state, as Mr. Herzog penned it.
The Israeli president begins his article by mentioning his meeting with Israeli victims of the Oct. 7 attack perpetrated by Hamas. Calling the death of 1,400 Israelis the “unimagined tragedy” of Israel, he claims that Israel is in an existential struggle. Herzog also argues that the current battle is “not just between Israel and Hamas. It is between those who adhere to norms of humanity and those practicing a barbarism that has no place in the modern world.”

On 7 October 2023, the Palestinian Islamist militant group[a] Hamas initiated a surprise invasion of Israel from the Gaza Strip and massacred 270 civilians, wounded many more, and took an unknown number of hostages at the “Supernova Sukkot Gathering”, an open-air psychedelic trance music festival celebrating the Jewish holiday of Sukkot near kibbutz Re’im.[4][5][6] This massacre was part of a series of coordinated Hamas attacks on Israel that day, which included targeting Israeli civilians for mass killings in the nearby communities of Netiv HaAsara, Be’eri, Kfar Aza, Nir Oz, Holit at the start of the 2023 Israel–Hamas war.[7]

My Muse woke me early again, and set me to work on how Representative Adam Schiff could be rewarded for his Courageous Love of Democracy. I shoved aside the Presidential Medal. It was not enough. Becoming a Senator of California is what he says he wants, but, every time I see Adam, and hear his words, I know I am looking at a man who believes in God’s Justice, and His Love of Truth, is the Cornerstone of all Democracies.
I turned on MSNBC news (where I saw Adam several times) and there is Joe Scarborough at Auschwitz. I had read Adam represented Armenians, and Jirayl Zorthian came to mind. I googled Zorthian and saw something I failed to see….Zorthian was one of RITCHIE’S BOYS and worked in U.S. Intelligence. Zorthian walked out of Turkey with his family, and witnessed the Armenian Genocide. I now knew Adam wanted me to post on the plight of the Arminian People. This would be a reward. I got my reward in the discovery of King Applegate, a native Oregonian who went to the UofO!

How many members of the Republican committee going after the Democrats, read it? The Barr Boys are shitting bricks over the New York Times article published yesterday. Not only is there proof of a cover-up…the Band of Brave Barr Boys entered the railroad crossing – and got t-boned by a freight train!
I met Zorthian and lived with his two daughters with my sister Christine. In my next installment of ‘The Royal Janitor’ I will have Starfish reveal her parents were disciples of Rex Applegate, and Professor Von Bundhorst is authoring a book about him. That Barr came in contact with Dutch Intelligence – is a gift from God!
