Republican Rep. Bob Good on Thursday called for the impeachment of Attorney General Merrick Garland and FBI Director Christopher Wray in response to the indictment of former President Donald Trump over his alleged mishandling and concealment of classified White House documents.
“We should impeach Merrick Garland. He’s clearly abusing the power of his position. We ought to impeach director Wray as well,” Good (R-Va.) told a CNN reporter on Thursday.
In his first public remarks since Trump’s second criminal indictment, Garland on Wednesday defended his role in special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation of the 77-year-old former president as “completely consistent with the regulations that set forth the responsibilities of the attorney general under the special counsel regulations.”
Numerous Republicans have accused Garland and the Justice Department of politicizing investigations into Trump and weaponizing the agency against the 45th president, who is also the 2024 GOP presidential primary front-runner.
“The FBI, the whole Justice Department needs to be looked at,” Rep. Ralph Norman (R-SC) said Thursday, adding that “certain parts” should be defunded in response to the Trump indictment.

When Donald J. Trump responded to his latest indictment by promising to appoint a special prosecutor if he’s re-elected to “go after” President Biden and his family, he signaled that a second Trump term would fully jettison the post-Watergate norm of Justice Department independence.
“I will appoint a real special prosecutor to go after the most corrupt president in the history of the United States of America, Joe Biden, and the entire Biden crime family,” Mr. Trump said at his golf club in Bedminster, N.J., on Tuesday night after his arraignment earlier that day in Miami. “I will totally obliterate the Deep State.”
Mr. Trump’s message was that the Justice Department charged him only because he is Mr. Biden’s political opponent, so he would invert that supposed politicization. In reality, under Attorney General Merrick Garland, two Trump-appointed prosecutors are already investigating Mr. Biden’s handling of classified documents and the financial dealings of his son, Hunter.
But by suggesting the current prosecutors investigating the Bidens were not “real,” Mr. Trump appeared to be promising his supporters that he would appoint an ally who would bring charges against his political enemies regardless of the facts.
Republicans in the Oregon Senate ended their six-week walkout on Thursday, after reaching a deal to water down Democratic bills on abortion and guns that the GOP has strenuously opposed.
Those changes — unthinkable if Republicans had not launched the longest walkout in state history — represent a win for the boycotting senators. But the party got far from everything it wanted in protracted negotiations with Democrats.
Senate President Rob Wagner, D-Lake Oswego, refused to excuse absences racked up by 10 conservative lawmakers since the walkout began May 3. That means all 10 are expected to be blocked from running for reelection under a ballot measure passed by voters last November.
“The framework that we have today is going to move Oregon forward, and there are obviously a whole bunch of legislators that aren’t gonna be able to come back to this building,” Wagner told reporters.
Democrats also balked at a larger “kill list” of legislation Republicans want taken out of consideration as lawmakers speed to a mandatory June 25 adjournment. The deal is contingent on the GOP agreeing to waive normal procedural rules, a step that will allow Democrats to fast-track hundreds of bills awaiting passage in the Senate.
