Who Am I?

Huffy Hafner parades about in our stairwell declaring she and my daughter concur – I am seriously demented! She says I am a Big Pretend Guy, and extremely deluded!  Kim goes to church and sits with her ilk, who declare;

“I AM a cowboy! I AM a redneck! IAM a patriot! I AM a humble American whose ancestors owned  a general store – with a wooden Indian outside! Yeehaw!”

I AM is the word for God. When I saw God, I raised my bandaged hand, and said;

“I am!”

I was dead at the time! AM I an angel?

I practice real humility, while all around me declare they will escape death by flying into the sky and seeing God! They will – NOT DIE! Who is Coo-Coo?

That’s my blood-kin Henry, the Army Veteran, in front of his General Store leaning against his wooden Indian. Is that his wife and daughter? I love those flags and shields. I think I see a tweety-bird in a cage!

It was bad enough when I said I AM a prophet. But, to say I saw God? Outrageous! To say I AM God, and, I AM bringing Judgment Day…………….?

“Crucify him – some more! We aren’t ready – enough!”

“Look that old deluded fool walking around like he owns the town. Who elected him sheriff, or, Mayor, or, whatever!”

“Let’s go spit on him! He is not like us!”

“How true! He is not like us! Let’s take his cat from him and see if he cries!”

None of your are ready to behold the face of God. And, that is a fact – Jack! If you are taken to heaven, who will you be? Who AM I…………..to judge angels?

I am John

The Meaning of Yahweh from Exodus 3

The most important text in all the Bible for understanding the meaning of the name Yahweh is Exodus 3:13–15. God has just commanded Moses to go to Egypt and to bring his people Israel out of captivity. Moses says to God,

“If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?’” God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.”’ God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel, ‘The LORD [that is, Yahweh!], the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations.”

Now notice that God gives three answers to the question, “What shall I tell them your name is?”

  1. In verse 14, God says, I AM WHO I AM.
  2. In verse 14, God says, I AM has sent me to you.
  3. In verse 15, God says, Yahweh . . . has sent me to you . . . this is my name forever.

So two facts persuade me that this text provides an interpretation of the name Yahweh. One is that the name Yahweh and the name I AM are built out of the same Hebrew word (hayah). The other is that Yahweh seems to be used here interchangeably with I AM. “I AM has sent me to you” (verse 14). “Yahweh . . . has sent me to you” (verse 15). I think it would be safe to say that God’s purpose in this meeting with Moses is to reveal, as he never had before (Exodus 6:2), the meaning of his personal name, Yahweh. The key is in the phrase, I AM, and especially in the phrase, I AM WHO I AM.

So here is where we ought to spend a lot of time meditating. What does it mean when you ask your God, Who are you? and he answers, I AM WHO I AM? I hope you can begin to feel this morning how important these words are. There aren’t any words more important than these. Any words that you think might be are important only because these words are true. The more you ponder them, the more awesome they become. I know I can’t do them justice. But perhaps the Holy Spirit might take my stammering attempt and open some vista for you.

Question: “What does it mean that we will judge angels?”

Answer: In his letter to the church in Corinth, the apostle Paul tells us that believers will not only judge the world but also judge angels: “Or do you not know that the saints will judge the world … Do you not know that we are to judge angels? How much more, then, matters pertaining to this life” (1 Corinthians 6:2-3). Scripture teaches that the fallen angels will be judged by God (Isaiah 24:21-22; 2 Peter 2:4; Jude 1:6; Revelation 21:10). But what does Paul mean when he says the saints will also judge angels?

What we can surmise from this 1 Corinthians passage is that we, as God’s children, will be given a higher position than the angels. We’re not only created in God’s image but redeemed by Christ (Galatians 3:13; 1 Peter 2:9; Luke 1:68; Ephesians 1:7). Angels are not created in God’s image and are not redeemed by Christ (Hebrews 1:14; 2:16). Also, God sends His angels to serve His saints, i.e., those who are to inherit eternal life (Hebrews 1:14; see also Psalm 34:7; Psalm 91:11).

Additionally, we know that the Greek word for “judge,” krino, also means “to rule or govern.” This strongly implies that we will have authority over the holy angels, for they have no sin for which to be “judged” in the sense of “condemned.” Most likely, the meaning of this passage is that believers in heaven will take part in the judgment of the fallen angels and exercise some authority over the holy angels. Christ has been exalted above all the angels (see Ephesians 1:20-23), and it seems reasonable that those who are in Him and made in His likeness (Romans 8:29; 1 Corinthians 15:49; Ephesians 4:24; 1 John 3:2) will share in His authority, including His authority over the angels (Matthew 19:28; 2 Timothy 2:12; Revelation 20:4).
