Christians have long used non-Christians to promote their cause. The Papacy has invented Saints and Demons in order to turn common people into their puppets.
It appears there was a religious POLITICAL plan in the works looking for a choice target.

He pledged that the committee would work on behalf of all the bishops to promote religious freedom. By working together, Catholics can strive to create “a new appreciation for religious liberty and a renewed determination to defend it,” he said.”
