Crazy Stupid Love

The other night I was watching a new series on HBO when a movie was about to begin. I pushed buttons on my remote and saw the it was a four star movie. When I saw it starred Steve Carell, I had my doubts. But, when I beheld the love scene between Hannah and Jacob, I had tears in my eyes, for here was a beautiful falling away of the narcissistic masks we wear.

Hannah is in love with her Narccisitic boss, and after he gives her a promotion, instead of asking her hand in marriage, she goes looking for Jacob, the handsome dude who is on love with himself at the pick-up bar, he pretending he is talking to one beautiful woman after another, but, he is there to behold himself is his cocktail glass.

Jacob gives narcissistic disorder lessons to Cal so he too can take advantage of women and break their hearts, for this is what it takes to rebuild ones self-esteem after it has been shattered.

When Cal learns his daughter, Hannah, has fallen for the Master Narcassist, he forbids his teacher to see his daughter.

Cal Weaver (Steve Carell) is a middle-aged man who learns that his wife Emily (Julianne Moore) cheated on him with a coworker, David Lindhagen (Kevin Bacon), and wants a divorce. After moving into his own apartment, Cal goes to a bar night after night, talking loudly about his divorce, until he attracts the attention of a young man named Jacob Palmer (Ryan Gosling). Jacob is a womanizer who successfully beds women each night, although a young woman named Hannah (Emma Stone) recently had rejected his advances. Jacob takes pity on Cal. Jacob agrees to teach Cal how to pick up women, and the two become friends. Using Jacob’s teachings, Cal seduces Kate (Marisa Tomei) at the bar. After this encounter, Cal manages to successfully seduce multiple women in the bar. He sees Emily again at his son Robbie’s (Jonah Bobo) parent-teacher conference. The meeting goes well until they discover Robbie’s teacher is Kate, who reveals to Emily that she and Cal slept together. Emily leaves in disgust and begins actively dating David.

Meanwhile, Hannah, a recent law school graduate, is studying for the bar exam. After Hannah passes the bar exam, she is expecting her boyfriend, Richard (Josh Groban) to propose marriage while they celebrate at a restaurant, but he does not, leaving Hannah hurt. Hannah storms from the restaurant and returns to the bar where she originally rejected Jacob’s advances. Upon finding Jacob at the bar, Hannah pulls him into a passionate kiss. The two return to Jacob’s home to have sex, but end up talking to each other all night and making a connection. Jacob starts a relationship with Hannah, and he becomes distant from Cal.
