As an original Hippie, I can say we tried to end the war in Vietnam. We tried to stop Death from taking more lives in a ancient land that once worshipped Buddha. We wanted Death to take a holiday. We tried to trick Death up a tree. We took LSD while we read from the Egyptian and Tibetan Book of the Dead. If we could own a death experience through a chemical, then we could capture Death, and there would be no more Death in Vietnam – or anywhere! There would only be Peace and Love – forever!
In her letter to Oprah Winfrey, Patrice Hanson says she knew Heather was my child the moment she was born. She kept this truth a secret from her brutal husband, and his family, lest my child be murdered. Patrice claims she was looking for another way to get away from Randall Delpiano who made life hell for her two sons conceived by two fathers, but, I don’t believe her, and never will. She presented my daughter as a gift to her husband who could not get her pregnant in hope this miraculous child will change him into a peaceful man. My child, this infant, failed to do the magic trick. Consider Revelation 12, and the fact I was born the eve thousands of stars were swept from the sky by Draco the Dragon constellation.
“Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding in his hand the key of the bottomless pit (Greek- tes aBussou, “the abyss”) and a great chain. And he seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years, and threw him into the pit (ten aBusson), and shut it and sealed it over him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years were ended. After that he must be loosed for a little while.” Revelation 20:1-3
Yama is the first human being to die, and thus he is the Hindu god of Death. Jesus says he is the alpha and the omega. Jesus claims humanity will not know Death after his death and resurrection. Jesus came to found a new heaven and earth – after ridding it of the Godless. He would be the last Death, and the first born into the Kingdom of God – come! Some say Jesus went into the underworld and freed souls that were captured there.
Some scholars have suggested Yama was represented by Samuel the Nazarite. Joseph Flavius says the Judaic religion has its roots in India. Yama judged the dead. The Nazarites judged the living. If indeed Josephus is correct, then aspects of the Hindu religion were introduced in the Birth of Samson narrative where a wonderous angel appears to Manoah’s wife, who is un-named, as is the angel.
Randall Delpiano is an immortal amongst the Dead Heads because he impersonated Bob Weir. This disguised man claimed he was a sound engineer. I knew Stanly Augustus Owsley and his two compatriots who manufactured LSD. One of them became my Art Patron, and worked on this sound system. Owsley dated my childhood friend Nancy Van Brasch (now Hamren) who loved Bill Arnold with all her heart and soul. Together we tried to save Bill was his Military Father who beat and tortured Bill in order to get him to give up his dream to be an Artist, a Poet, and a playwright. Retired Leutienent-Colonel Brian Caulfield Arnold wanted Bill to be a Killer, a destroyer – a bringer of Death! Brian wanted Bill in the army!
My daughter and grandson are amongst the Philistine who were manufacturer of alcoholic drinks. The loved to get drunk and have orgies. Did they worship Bacchus? The Philistine captured the Ark of the Covenant, and Eli the Nazarite prophet fell over backwards and broke his neck. The Ark held the power of Death. It could slay thousands with a elecical bolt, a light, a energy. Was the Angelof Death captured within the Ark?
After my death at McClure’s Beach while on a powerful dose of LSD – a special batch made by Owsley – five members of the Brotherhood of Eternal Love came to see me. They were disciples of Timothy Leary who employed the Books of the Dead as guides for explorers of the underworld. No one had gone all the way, and come back?
If you are a Christian, or a Mormon, then you are extremely interested in Death and the Afterlife. So are the Tibetans who are master genealogists. We are talking about Death Cults. Death can be very Beautiful. One can behold Heaven. This I know. One can even see God.
Two days after meeting Rena, we are sleeping in a tent in a backyard in Oakland California where I was born three minutes past sunset on October 8, 1946, when a thousand stars fell from the sky. We are like orphans in the world. Rena is an Aries, the god of war. She is the Aprodite of America’s Heartland, a war goddess who is for Peace, and the end of Death in Vietnam. I have captured Beauty from my enemy. I have seen Troy!

Again the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord delivered them into the hand of the Philistines for forty years.
Now there was a certain man from Zorah, of the family of the Danites, whose name was Manoah; and his wife was barren and had no children. And the Angel of the Lord appeared to the woman and said to her, “Indeed now, you are barren and have borne no children, but you shall conceive and bear a son.
“Now therefore, please be careful not to drink wine or similar drink, and not to eat anything unclean. For behold, you shall conceive and bear a son. And no razor shall come upon his head, for the child shall be a Nazirite to God from the womb; and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.”
So the woman came and told her husband, saying, “A Man of God came to me, and His countenance was like the countenance of the Angel of God, very awesome; but I did not ask Him where He was from, and He did not tell me His name. And He said to me, ‘Behold, you shall conceive and bear a son. Now drink no wine or similar drink, nor eat anything unclean, for the child shall be a Nazirite to God from the womb to the day of his death.’”
Then Manoah prayed to the Lord, and said, “O my Lord, please let the Man of God whom You sent come to us again and teach us what we shall do for the child who will be born.” And God listened to the voice of Manoah, and the Angel of God came to the woman again as she was sitting in the field; but Manoah her husband was not with her.
Then the woman ran in haste and told her husband, and said to him, “Look, the Man who came to me the other day has just now appeared to me!” So Manoah arose and followed his wife. When he came to the Man, he said to Him, “Are You the Man who spoke to this woman?” And He said, “I am.” Manoah said, “Now let Your words come to pass! What will be the boy’s rule of life, and his work?” So the Angel of the Lord said to Manoah, “Of all that I said to the woman let her be careful. She may not eat anything that comes from the vine, nor may she drink wine or similar drink, nor eat anything unclean. All that I commanded her let her observe.”
Then Manoah said to the Angel of the Lord, “Please let us detain You, and we will prepare a young goat for You.” And the Angel of the Lord said to Manoah, “Though you detain Me, I will not eat your food. But if you offer a burnt offering, you must offer it to the Lord.” (For Manoah did not know He was the Angel of the Lord.) Then Manoah said to the Angel of the Lord, “What is Your name, that when Your words come to pass we may honor You?” And the Angel of the Lord said to him, “Why do you ask My name, seeing it is wonderful?”
So Manoah took the young goat with the grain offering, and offered it upon the rock to the Lord. And He did a wondrous thing while Manoah and his wife looked on; it happened as the flame went up toward heaven from the altar; the Angel of the Lord ascended in the flame of the altar! When Manoah and his wife saw this, they fell on their faces to the ground. When the Angel of the Lord appeared no more to Manoah and his wife, then Manoah knew that He was the Angel of the Lord.
And Manoah said to his wife, “We shall surely die, because we have seen God!” But his wife said to him, “If the Lord had desired to kill us, He would not have accepted a burnt offering and a grain offering from our hands, nor would He have shown us all these things, nor would He have told us such things as these at this time.”
So the woman bore a son and called his name Samson; and the child grew, and the Lord blessed him. And the Spirit of the Lord began to move upon him at Mahaneh Dan between Zorah and Eshtaol.
Revelation 12
New International Version (NIV)
The Woman and the Dragon
12 A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head. 2 She was pregnant and cried out in pain as she was about to give birth. 3 Then another sign appeared in heaven: an enormous red dragon with seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns on its heads. 4 Its tail swept a third of the stars out of the sky and flung them to the earth. The dragon stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth, so that it might devour her child the moment he was born. 5 She gave birth to a son, a male child, who “will rule all the nations with an iron scepter.”[a] And her child was snatched up to God and to his throne. 6 The woman fled into the wilderness to a place prepared for her by God, where she might be taken care of for 1,260 days.
7 Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. 8 But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. 9 The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.
10 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say:
“Now have come the salvation and the power
and the kingdom of our God,
and the authority of his Messiah.
For the accuser of our brothers and sisters,
who accuses them before our God day and night,
has been hurled down.
11 They triumphed over him
by the blood of the Lamb
and by the word of their testimony;
they did not love their lives so much
as to shrink from death.
12 Therefore rejoice, you heavens
and you who dwell in them!
But woe to the earth and the sea,
because the devil has gone down to you!
He is filled with fury,
because he knows that his time is short.”
13 When the dragon saw that he had been hurled to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child. 14 The woman was given the two wings of a great eagle, so that she might fly to the place prepared for her in the wilderness, where she would be taken care of for a time, times and half a time, out of the serpent’s reach. 15 Then from his mouth the serpent spewed water like a river, to overtake the woman and sweep her away with the torrent. 16 But the earth helped the woman by opening its mouth and swallowing the river that the dragon had spewed out of his mouth. 17 Then the dragon was enraged at the woman and went off to wage war against the rest of her offspring —those who keep God’s commands and hold fast their testimony about Jesus.
The Harrowing of Hell was taught by theologians of the early church: St Melito of Sardis (died c 180) Homily on the Passion; Tertullian (A Treatise on the Soul, 55), Hippolytus (Treatise on Christ and Anti-Christ) Origen (Against Celsus, 2:43), and, later, St Ambrose (died 397) all wrote of the Harrowing of Hell.
The Gospel of Matthew relates that immediately after Christ died, the earth shook, there was a Crucifixion darkness and eclipse, the veil in the Temple was torn in two, and many people rose from the dead and walked about in Jerusalem and were seen by many people there. According to the apocryphal Gospel of Nicodemus, the Harrowing of Hell was foreshadowed by Christ’s raising of Lazarus from the dead prior to his own crucifixion. The hymns proper to the weekend suggest that John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus in Hell by prophesying to those held there that Christ would soon release them, just as he prepared the way for Jesus on Earth
After Stanley got out of prison in late 1972, he, Dan Healy and Mark Raizene of the Grateful Dead’s sound crew, in collaboration with Ron Wickersham, Rick Turner, and John Curl of Alembic combined six independent sound systems using eleven separate channels, in an effort to deliver high-quality sound to audiences. Vocals, lead guitar, rhythm guitar, and piano each had their own channel and set of speakers.
Owsley Stanley (born Augustus Owsley Stanley III, January 19, 1935 – March 12, 2011) also known as Bear, was a figure of the San Francisco Bay counter-culture. His early activities spanned the Beat-era years of Ken Kesey’s Merry Pranksters scenes, but he played a role during the explosion of 1960’s Psychedelia culture. As a crafts-person, he became best known simply as ‘Owsley’ – the LSD “cook” (underground chemist). Under the professional name of “Bear”, he worked with the psychedelic rock band the Grateful Dead’s international fan “family”.
Bear was as an early soundman for The Grateful Dead, a band he met when Kesey invited them to an Owsley Acid test party. As their sound engineer, Bear frequently recorded live tapes behind his mixing board and helped “The Dead” become the first performers since Les Paul to custom-develop high-fidelity audio components and sound systems.
Stanley was the first private individual to manufacture mass quantities of LSD.[1][2][3] Between 1965 and 1967, Stanley produced more than 1.25 million doses of LSD.
Stanley died in an automobile accident in Australia on March 12, 2011.[3][4][5]
EUGENE — A legendary day in a home-grown company’s history dawned warm and grew wickedly hot, to a skin scalding 107 degrees. And boy, oh boy, was there skin to scald.
“The Grateful Dead said it was the stark nakedest scene they’d ever attended,” remembers Chuck Kesey, who asked his friends in the band if they’d truck on up to Oregon and play a benefit for his struggling little company, Springfield Creamery.
Unlikely as the deal seems today, the Dead did just that on Aug. 27, 1972. They set up west of Eugene, in Veneta, where the Oregon Country Fair encamps each summer. Funky, hand-drawn posters advertised the pot-luck picnic and Dead concert for $3 in advance or $3.50 at the gate — “cheap,” as the posters noted. The creamery transformed its Nancy’s Honey Yogurt labels into concert tickets, and more than 20,000 Dead devotees, some clad in little more than their own fur, spilled in.
One lean year, 1972, the Grateful Dead played a benefit concert, which helped keep the creamery in business.
The result: one of those quintessential Oregon events that fueled the state’s happy hippie reputation and cemented its place in the budding natural foods movement. Springfield Creamery, whose practices and products epitomized the pure, healthy goodness the movement yearned to spread, survived, thanks in part to the $12,000 to $13,000 raised that day.
Without it, the business that grew to symbolize a nation’s evolving food tastes might not have stuck around long enough to celebrate its 50th anniversary this year.

Nancy Van Brasch Hamren had a recipe. Her health-conscious grandmother made yogurt, and so did she during the months she lived on Ken Kesey’s farm near Eugene.
Hamren, a lanky, soft-spoken Californian, ran in circles simply psychedelic with history. She lived in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury district from 1966 to 1968, the bookends to 1967’s Summer of Love. Her boyfriend’s sister was married to Jerry Garcia, the Grateful Dead’s shaggy-haired lead guitarist. And they all knew Ken Kesey — from his books, “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and “Sometimes a Great Notion,” and from the infamous, drug-juiced parties known as Acid Tests, which he hosted and promoted.
When Ken Kesey traveled to Britain to work with the Beatles in 1969, Hamren and her boyfriend moved to Oregon to look after his farm. When Kesey and his family returned, she needed a new pad and a job. Down at the creamery, his brother, Chuck, needed a bookkeeper. He and Sue hired Hamren, and they started talking yogurt
The name “Grateful Dead” was chosen from a dictionary. Some claim it was a Funk & Wagnalls, others, the Bardo Thodol (Tibetan Book Of the Dead), but according to Phil Lesh, in his biography (pp. 62), “…Jer (Garcia) picked up an old Britannica World Language Dictionary…(and)…In that silvery elf-voice he said to me, ‘Hey, man, how about the Grateful Dead?’” The definition there was “A song meant to show a lost soul to the other side.” [15] According to the Garcia biography, Captain Trips by Sandy Troy, the band was smoking the psychedelic DMT at the time.
The Tibetan Book of the Dead is ostensibly a book describing the experiences
to be expected at the moment of death, during an intermediate phase lasting
forty-nine (seven times seven) days, and during rebirth into another bodily
frame. This however is merely the exoteric framework which the Tibetan
Buddhists used to cloak their mystical teachings. The language and
symbolism of death rituals of Bonism, the traditional pre-Buddhist Tibetan
religion, were skillfully blended with Buddhist conceptions. The esoteric
meaning, as it has been interpreted in this manual, is that it is death and
rebirth that is described, not of the body. Lama Govinda indicates this
clearly in his introduction when he writes: “It is a book for the living as
well as the dying.” The book’s esoteric meaning is often concealed beneath
many layers of symbolism. It was not intended for general reading. It was
designed to be understood only by one who was to be initiated personally by
a guru into the Buddhist mystical doctrines, into the pre-mortem-death-
rebirth experience. These doctrines have been kept a closely guarded secret
for many centuries, for fear that naive or careless application would do
harm. In translating such an esoteric text, therefore, there are two steps:
one, the rendering of the original text into English; and two, the practical
interpretation of the text for its uses. In publishing this practical
interpretation for use in the psychedelic drug session, we are in a sense
breaking with the tradition of secrecy and thus contravening the teachings
of the lama-gurus.
However, this step is justified on the grounds that the manual will not be
understood by anyone who has not had a consciousness-expanding
experience and that there are signs that the lamas themselves, after their
recent diaspora, wish to make their teachings available to a wider public.
Following the Tibetan model then, we distinguish three phases of the
psychedelic experience. The first period (Chikhai Bardo) is that of complete
transcendence – beyond words, beyond space-time, beyond self. There are
no visions, no sense of self, no thoughts. There are only pure awareness and
ecstatic freedom from all game (and biological) involvements. [“Games” are
behavioral sequences defined by roles, rules, rituals, goals, strategies,
values, language, characteristic space-time locations and characteristic
patterns of movement. Any behavior not having these nine features is non-
game: this includes physiological reflexes, spontaneous play, and
transcendent awareness.] The second lengthy period involves self, or
external game reality (Chonyid Bardo) – in sharp exquisite clarity or in the
form of hallucinations (karmic apparitions). The final period (Sidpa Bardo)
involves the return to routine game reality and the self. For most persons
the second (aesthetic or hallucinatory) stage is the longest. For the initiated
the first stage of illumination lasts longer. For the unprepared, the heavy
game players, those who anxiously cling to their egos, and for those who
take the drug in a non-supportive setting, the struggle to regain reality
begins early and usually lasts to the end of their session.

The Book of the Dead is the modern name of an ancient Egyptian funerary text, used from the beginning of the New Kingdom (around 1550 BC) to around 50 BC.[1] The original Egyptian name for the text, transliterated rw nw prt m hrw[2] is translated as “Book of Coming Forth by Day”.[3] Another translation would be “Book of emerging forth into the Light”. The text consists of a number of magic spells intended to assist a dead person’s journey through the Duat, or underworld, and into the afterlife. The Book of the Dead was part of a tradition of funerary texts which includes the earlier Pyramid Texts and Coffin Texts, which were painted onto objects, not papyrus. Some of the spells included were drawn from these older works and date to the 3rd millennium BC. Other spells were composed later in Egyptian history, dating to the Third Intermediate Period (11th to 7th centuries BC). A number of the spells which made up the Book continued to be inscribed on tomb walls and sarcophagi, as had always been the spells from which they originated. The Book of the Dead was placed in the coffin or burial chamber of the deceased.
There was no single or canonical Book of the Dead. The surviving papyri contain a varying selection of religious and magical texts and vary considerably in their illustration. Some people seem to have commissioned their own copies of the Book of the Dead, perhaps choosing the spells they thought most vital in their own progression to the afterlife. The Book of the Dead was most commonly written in hieroglyphic or hieratic script on a papyrus scroll, and often illustrated with vignettes depicting the deceased and their journey into the afterlife.

The Brotherhood of Eternal Love was an organization of psychedelic drug users and distributors that operated from the mid 1960s through the late 1970s in Orange County, California; they were dubbed the “Hippie Mafia”.[1] They produced and distributed drugs in hopes of starting a psychedelic revolution in the United States.[2]
The organization was started by John Griggs as a commune (and got Timothy Leary to come out to their ranch in Idyllwild-Pine Cove, California) but by 1969 had turned to the manufacture of LSD and the import of hashish.
In 1970 The Brotherhood of Eternal Love hired the terrorist organization Weather Underground for a fee of $25,000 to break drug activist Timothy Leary out of prison, where he was serving a 5-year sentence for possession of marijuana.[3][4]
Their activities came to an end on August 5, 1972, when in a drug raid dozens of group members in California, Oregon and Maui were arrested, though all of them were released within months; some who had escaped the raid continued underground or fled abroad.[2] More members were arrested in 1994 and 1996, and the last of them in 2009;[1] he served two months in jail after pleading guilty to a single charge of smuggling hashish.[5] A documentary (called “Orange Sunshine” for the LSD they produced) on the organization premiered in 2007,[2] and in 2010 Nicholas Schou published a book on the brotherhood.[6]
Then I saw a great white throne and him who sat upon it; from his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Also another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, by what they had done. And the sea gave up the dead in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead in them, and all were judged by what they had done. Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire; and if any one’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.” Revelation 20:11-15
Death and Hades being thrown in the lake of fire means that physical death will no longer occur where the body goes to the grave (“Death”) and the soul descends to Hades, since a person will either live physically forever with God or will suffer conscious physical punishment in hell forever:
“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband; and I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Behold, the dwelling of God is with men. He will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself will be with them; he will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain any more, for the former things have passed away.’ And he who sat upon the throne said, ‘Behold, I make all things new.’ Also he said, ‘Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true.’ And he said to me, ‘It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the fountain of the water of life without payment. He who conquers shall have this heritage, and I will be his God and he shall be my son. But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the polluted, as for murderers, fornicators, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their lot shall be in the lake that burns with fire and sulphur, which is the second death.’” Revelation 21:1-8
The fullest written account of the “Harrowing of Hell” is not found in the Bible, however, but in the non-canonical Gospel of Nicodemus, a text which probably dates back in some form to around the 3rd century or even earlier. Here we read how Jesus, after his crucifixion, descended into hell and brought salvation to the souls of the dead who were prisoners there. The story begins with a dialogue between Hades and Satan, who have heard word that Jesus is coming, which prompts a debate about the power of Jesus. Hades is afraid, because he has heard of the miracles Jesus has performed on earth. Satan, on the other hand, has heard that Jesus was crucified as a common criminal; he is certain that they will be able to bind and subdue Jesus when he arrives in their realm.
When Jesus arrives, Hades bids his servants to bolt and lock the doors, but to no avail; Jesus shatters the gates and enters. He seizes Satan and binds him in iron chains, then consigning him into Hades’s keeping until the second coming. Jesus next turns his attention to the patriarchs. He raises up Adam, along with all the prophets and the saints. Together, they all depart up out of Hades, and ascend into Paradise. (You can read a full account in the Gospel of Nicodemus online.) The “Harrowing of Hell” portion of that Gospel was widely circulated in other compilations of religious literature, most notably in the Golden Legend of the lives of the saints, compiled by Jacob of Voragine in the 13th century.
The literary versions of the “Harrowing of Hell” in turn gave rise to many works of art, including the “mystery play” tradition of medieval religious drama. Most commonly, however, people would learn about Jesus’s descent into the underworld from the artwork which decorated the churches and cathedrals of Europe. In the remainder of this article, I would like to look at ten different visual depictions of the story, to see what details we can observe in each artist’s rendering of the scene.
Hell In A Bucket: The man arrested a couple of years back for
impersonating Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir has been at it again.
Randall Delpiano was arrested in the East Bay community of Walnut
Creek after his parole officer recognized his photo in a local
newspaper. Delpiano was paroled from state prison last April after
serving 15 months on fraud and theft charges stemming from a $5,000
robbery, and at that time had convinced a newspaper reporter and a
radio DJ that he was the Dead’s rhythm guitarist.
In August of this year, Delpiano again began impersonating Bob Weir.
One of the individuals he bilked, Ken Whitaker, admittedly not a
Deadhead, recalled the experience: “He seemed to know everything
about the Grateful Dead. He told stories for hours and he played the
harmonica extremely well. We didn’t know then that the real Bob Weir
doesn’t play harmonica.

27:45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.
27:46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
27:47 Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias.
27:48 And straightway one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink.
27:49 The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him.
27:50 Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.
27:51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;
27:52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,
27:53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.
27:54 Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.
27:55 And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him:
27:56 Among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedees children.
In Hinduism, Yama (Sanskrit: यम) or Yamarāja (यमराज) is the god of death, belonging to an early stratum of Vedic mythology. In the Vedas, Yama is said to have been the first mortal who died. By virtue of precedence, he became the ruler of the departed.[citation needed] There is a one-of-a-kind temple in Srivanchiyam, Tamil Nadu, India, dedicated to Yama.[citation needed]
Mentioned by the Buddha in the Pali canon, Yama subsequently entered Buddhist, Chinese, Tibetan, Korean, and Japanese mythology as a wrathful god under various transliterations.
The idea of Naraka in Sikhism is like the idea of Hell. One’s soul, however, is confined to 8.4 million life cycles before taking birth as a human, the point of human life being one where one attains salvation, the salvation being sach khand. The idea of khand comes in multiple levels of such heavens, the highest being merging with God as one. The idea of Hell is like it comes in multiple levels, and hell itself can manifest within human life itself. The Sikh idea of hell is where one is apart from naama and gurus charana (God’s lotus feet (abode)). Without naama one is damned. Naama is believed to be a direct deliverance from God to humanity in the form of Guru Nanak. A sikh is hence required to take the Amrit (holy nectar/water) from gurubani, panj pyare (khanda da pahul) to come closer to naama. A true Sikh of the Gurus has the Guru himself manifest and take that person into sach khand.
