Goel (go’el) is a Hebrew term which comes from the word gal’al(“to redeem”), hence meaning “redeemer”, which in the Bible and the rabbinicaltradition denotes a person who as the nearest relative of another is charged with the duty of restoring the rights of another and avenging his wrongs. In the Authorized King James Bible, it is rendered “kinsman”, “redeemer”, and “avenger”.

In the book of IsaiahGod is called the redeemer of Israel, as he redeems his people from captivity; the context shows that the redemption also involves moving on to something greater. In Christianity, the title goel is applied to Christ, who redeems us from all evil by the payment of a ransom.

[edit] Duties of the goelThe obligations of the goel include the duty to redeem the relative from slavery, if the latter had been obliged to sell himself into serfdom (Leviticus 25: 48-49); to repurchase the property of a relative who had had to sell it because of poverty; to avenge the blood of his relative; to marry his brother’s widow in order to have a son for his brother, in case the brother had not got any son to pass his name forth (Deuteronomy 25:5-6); and to receive the restitution if the injured relative had died (Numbers 5:8).

Numbers 35:9-30 regulates the duties of the goel. The congregation has to judge the case before it puts a murderer in the hands of a goel. More than one witness is needed for conviction. In case of accidental manslaughter, the slayer can save his life by fleeing to a “city of refuge” and staying there for the term of the high priest(who is appointed for his lifetime). Ransom is not accepted for murder. Revenge cannot be taken on the offender’s children or parents (Deuteronomy 24:16). Leviticus 25:48-49 gives the order in which the nearest relative is considered the goel in the case of redeeming a slave: brother, uncle, male cousin and then other relatives. The same order was probably observed in the other cases, except in marrying a sister-in-law.

While President Bush is negotiating the Temple Land Deal amongst the
Jews and Palestinians, his Greedy Right-wing Bankers and Evangelical
Energy Pirates are scrambling to put back the money they stole from
the Common Cookie Jar in order to prevent America’s real-estate
market from going belly-up. Not since the Great Depression has the
Fed come to the rescue of our economy that may be on the verge of
total collapse. Hello Big Government!

The Governor of California and the Mayor of San Francisco are in the
news, they too warning of a economic disaster. Here is Newsom;

“San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom said that predatory lending
practices have been unconscionable and that major lenders should step
up their outreach to at-risk homeowners.”
Newsom ignored my warnings.

Here is Arnold Schwarzenegger, who did not come to my rescue;

“Nuñez urged Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to call a special session of
the Legislature to quickly deal with the expanding sub-prime mortgage
crisis in California and joined Democratic lawmakers in proposing a
package of new consumer protections.In Washington, the focus was on
national solutions. Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson Jr. met with
banking regulators and lenders to find a way to keep interest rates
affordable for at-risk homeowners.”

In December of 2005 I sent Arnold Schwarzenegger a e-mail and then
posted this question on my yahoogroup;

“Will Arnold Schwarzenegger Champion my Family? In a e-mail I just

Lawrence Chazen is the CEO of Noble Corporation one of the world’s
largest offshore oil eploration and exploitation companies in the
world. President Bush and his Puppet President wanna-be, McCain,
proposed the ban on off-shore drilling be lifted by the Democrats in
order to lower the high price of gasoline that is bringing our
economy to a halt.

Another Noble CEO of Noble is Mary Ricciardello who served as Senior
Vice President and Chief Accounting Officer of Reliant Energy, Inc.
from January 2001 to August 2002.. Reliant Energy gouged and
defrauded their customers, their CEOs engaging in wire fraud to
create a false energy shortage. The Senate is now investigation the
possibility the same dirty tactics are being used to raise the price
of gasoline.

Another CEO of Noble is Marc E. Leland. Since 1978 Mr. Leland has
served as a London resident partner with the firm of Proskauer Rose
Goetz & Mendelsohn. Leland is a Reagan appointee.

“The President today announced his intention to nominate Marc E.
Leland to be a Deputy Under Secretary of the Treasury (International
Affairs). Upon confirmation, the President will designate Mr. Leland
to act as an Assistant Secretary of International Affairs.”
